Anybody else feel like they could have succeeded in an Entry Level Accounting position without going to college?

And basically learn the principles as they were being mentored with a patient, mindful, senior.

I hate inventory and anything to do with it.

    Posted: 22 Nov 2021 02:14 PM PST

I hate inventory. I hate LIFO and FIFO. I hate cost of goods sold. I hate this useless stuff.

The most boring and useless accounting system is inventory.

So- I think I'm training a $15 an hour person to replace me

    Posted: 22 Nov 2021 07:49 AM PST

I imagine I'm going to get let go right after the holidays but before bonus payout.

I've spent so many hours fixing a complete clusterfuck so that they can hand it over to a data entry person which is why it was a clusterfuck when I inherited it from the last data entry person.

Just here to rant- I'm not getting any new duties, so I can't imagine that I'm going to continue with the company. Makes me want to just quit today and let them figure it out. lol

Any ex-big4er find it difficult to relax after having a cushy industry job?

    Posted: 22 Nov 2021 07:35 PM PST

3 years PA I'm so used to long hours and fire drills. Now with a cushy job, I'm feeling guilty only 9-5 and not trying harder. Wtf is wrong with me? Has it have anything to do with the big4 expectation stuck in my head?

I just started as a Revenue Agent for the IRS - love the work life balance, but I’m getting a weird vibe from the environment.

    Posted: 22 Nov 2021 06:28 PM PST

Hey all, I have a background in financial services audit with b4. As you can probably tell I hated the hours, stress and expectations associated with b4 so I left and went government. I consider myself lucky to have gotten this job and by no means do I regret making the switch. However I do think there is a "culture" adjustment, and I wanted to get your guys' thoughts.

In b4 I felt there was always an open line of communication for questions or comments. Even if I had to annoy some people, I felt it was encouraged and especially when brand new, necessary. However the communication in my new job seems very "dulled?" the new hires barely communicate with each other. When I do ask a question the responses are often super dry and not very specific or helpful. I don't feel as if there is a new hire I could get to know and we could basically combine brains. And for more senior agents, they seem like nice people but aren't super responsive.

Additionally, I also get the vibe that communicating is dry and "less is more" is encouraged. While b4 was trash and I'd never go back, there was a sense of camaraderie to it that was admittedly nice. Am I SOL at this new gig?

For anyone with similar experience, is it just me? If it is I will just tell myself to stop acting nuts.

I realize the case work is very individual, but for simple training/scheduling/orientation questions, or even just wanting to get to know people, I guess I envisioned a more welcoming environment. Maybe I'm just taking it too personal.

How do people survive in HCOL cities on a first year salary?

    Posted: 22 Nov 2021 04:34 PM PST

I start a big 4 audit job in one of the top 5 most expensive cities in January and I don't understand how the salary is supposed to be enough to have my own apartment within 30 minutes of the city. I have about 28k in student loans too. My parents live about an hour outside the city so I plan on living there for a year to pay off the loans and save up but I know I'll be miserable and have no social life there.

What does an 80% travel schedule look like?

    Posted: 22 Nov 2021 09:32 PM PST

Currently at a regional firm, considering move to big 4 but not sure about the 80% travel piece as I'm fully remote now which is nice for WL balance.

Help me choose a tax service line!

    Posted: 22 Nov 2021 09:23 PM PST

I am an A1 at a mid tier firm (BDO/GT/RSM) and have the chance to get some experience wherever I want, but have chosen the following service lines as my main interest:

1 - Employment Tax: part of an accounting + HR line with a small national team, mostly external consulting and helping other HR consulting lines (benefits, comp, etc)

2 - International: mostly a regional service line, experience with multiple teams across a few different offices in my part of the country, both compliance and consulting work (they always seem busy)

3 - Global Mobility Services: fairly small national team with a chance to travel internationally, would be doing mostly external consulting work and internal compliance/guidance for the firm

Pros? Cons? What are you in and why did you choose? I'm leaning toward the GMS group, but red pill me on this shit. Please and thank you!!!

Will a double major pay more than a single degree?

    Posted: 22 Nov 2021 07:11 PM PST

So I am currently debating on wether I want to link my accounting major to either a CIS degree or a Finance degree. One question though, will a double major pay more than a single degree? Like if I major in accounting/CIS or accounting/finance will that pay more than just a solo accounting degree?

    Hi All,

For those working at DTT in Canada, DTT is adjusting the salaries to match market rate by December 2021.

Does anyone know the new range for incoming Senior 1st Year?

    Thanks!

What would you consider fair compensation?

    Posted: 22 Nov 2021 08:21 PM PST

I have about three years of tax seasons under my belt, post college with a masters, and working towards my CPA. I get paid $22/hr and the area median wage equates to about $15.40/hr. I do get overtime and my health insurance is 100% company paid, but I feel like a little wage bump is in line. Am I just being a baby? Should I keep my mouth shut until I'm licensed?

    WFH starting associate troubles

    Posted: 22 Nov 2021 02:02 PM PST

Starting out as an associate I in the current day has one major problem for me: when I'm given instructions to do a WP and have no idea how to do it. I know I'm supposed to just ask questions, but I don't even know where to start. All the client docs just feel like non sequitur numbers and words jumbled together with no pattern. Not even sure what questions to ask.

Anyone in a similar situation/have strategies on learning under WFH? Feel like I'm just wasting my day trying to reread the wp all day to no avail until I just give up and start browsing my phone.
