Does anyone work in an industry where they can turn away business that just isn't worth doing?

If you have enough "good" work to keep you profiting consistently. how often if at all will you turn away business that you just don't think will be worth doing. If so, how do you go about it?

My husband isn’t supportive of my business idea and is sneakily trying to get that out of my mind.

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 08:48 PM PST

I am a creative person. I love art and I also love to create delicious cakes, desserts, muffins, cupcakes and so on. I talked to my husband about me wanting to make something out of those things and start a small business by selling them.

I am going to visit some extra seminars to learn more and to make my skills even better. Of course it will cost me money and I am paying for it myself, from my own money.

Right now I have a full time job that I am truly grateful for, but for years it feels like that's not it for me. I like being creative and challenge myself on creative ideas and my current job is not giving me that.

When I have friends or people asking me to make them cakes or other sweets, my husband interferes and tell me to charge such a high price, that is not even realistic. He says that I am using „his" energy, „his" water, „his" oven and „his" table, to do those things, so I have to charge so much. It's odd for him to say those things, because we live in a 600 bucks apartment and he charge me the half of everything, even when he buys me a bag of chips he ask for the money back. It's not that he has to pay everything on his own, but he makes it looks like he is the poor guy paying for everything and I am the woman enjoying life.

When I tell him that it's not realistic and that not even professionals charge that amount, he says „oh well. Then you are not doing it."

Since a long time I feel kind of dull, because I can't fully express my creativity without him on my way. There was one time where I sold a piece of art on canvas and I got a very good price for it. I didn't even wanted to sell but the person who saw it, found it beautiful and offered me something for it, so I sold it.

Small brick & mortar store - our first Black Friday - how can I take advantage of our pretty decent location?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 10:44 PM PST

We are in a big shoping center and across from Target and Kohls, but somewhat tucked away next to Marshall's (who doesn't do Black Friday so potentially less foot traffic).

This is our first time doing a Black Friday sale and I am brainstorming ideas on how to promote it (beyond our email blast & big poster). I want the people at Target and Kohls to know of our sale. Do you have any suggestions? I was thinking more signs but I'm not sure.

    All in one solution

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 09:18 PM PST

We're a new, fast growing company that is looking for an all in one solution that includes:

Bookkeeping Invoicing Payroll HR Employee gps check in/out Tax advice Mileage tracking Receipts

Obviously QuickBooks + live comes to mind. We've fielded a presentation from bench, but they don't do a lot of stuff. Gusto comes highly recommended, but they don't invoice or bookkeep, etc.

What are our options? Does anybody offer everything, or are we having to cobble together a bunch of solutions that hopefully integrate.

    Any advice is appreciated!

Who owns the IP on proposals and pitches? You or the client?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 04:56 PM PST

We try to make each proposal/pitch unique which is time intensive. That being said, who technically owns the IP on my proposals (process) and pitches given it's a pitch / proposal?

Need some advice!! Helping Men become Gentleman

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 11:55 PM PST

Hey guys I would love to get your 2 cents on this one. I'm in the process of starting up a business and I'm getting towards the final stages but I just want to make sure I haven't missed anything important. I've been a barber for the last 6/7 years and noticed how many of my clients weren't taught things like how to shave, how to tie a tie, how to pick a suit, how to ask a girl out, etc. Even if they had a male figure in the home. I have noticed a lot of men, even older gentleman not knowing the basics they need for life. I'm wanting to create classes for guys to attended in either a group session or one on one to teach them these sorts of things. I've created a couple of different courses covering a few subjects but I just want to be sure I don't miss anything.

What was something important you wish you were taught before you became an adult?
What do you think young men struggle with the most these day that a class like this could help with?

I'm really hoping I can help a lot of men with something like this so any advice will be greatly appreciated.

    Snack/drink vending machine in office

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 08:03 PM PST

We've been offering snacks/drinks to all employees for free, starting around 6 months ago. We didn't have an exact policy or budget in mind when we started, it just seemed like a nice thing to do. As our staff grew this has become fairly troublesome. I do think it's a great gesture and as an employee I'd feel great about having these available for days you don't want to explicitly go out to lunch or if you don't have something available at home. However a lot of the prices vary from item to item and I hate having to always try to grab the cheapest available since I'm providing for so many people.

The plan has been to restock twice a month, and it's up to them to self-police and ensure nobody's abusing it. For the most part I think it's going well, but it's becoming a bit more expensive than I'd initially planned for and it also isn't a completely fair system since nobody's actually monitoring it.

What do yall think if I instead continued buying all of the items in bulk, but instead I put everything in the vending machine and charged 50% of what I paid? That way we're still offering cheap snacks/drinks and I can keep it fully stocked all the time without worry, and it'd be fair to all.

My one concern with this is that people might stock up on items to bring home since they'd be able to get them cheaper here than anywhere else. Though if I made it clear to not do that, I doubt it'd be an issue.

The only other alternative would be to charge exactly what I pay, that way I don't care how much they take (even if they take it home), but coming from "free" to "you have to pay full value" is kinda shitty.

As of now it hasn't been too big of an issue, so I'll continue to monitor the situation before making any changes, but the last thing I want to do is take away company provided snacks as I know it's something they really appreciate.

    Bringing on a business partner

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 06:41 PM PST

I started a new company about 2 years ago. I just brought on a business partner. I had the following questions which I would like help from this group to resolve.

I agreed to allow my business partner to work 3 days for a total of 24 hours and I work 5 to 6 days a week for a total of 40-50 hours. My business partner wants me to work less; however, we are a young start-up and I think we need to work more hours to generate consistent revenue. The reason I do more work is that I have more knowledge and experience with our product. My partner handles the operations and back office of the company such as billing and marketing.

My business partner does work around 24 hours per week; however, it is hard to substantiate those hours as I do not see the results unlike how you can see my results.

My business partner started a few months ago. Since that time, my business partner has taken a couple of vacations. I knew about the vacations; however, I was under the impression that no more requests would be made for at least 6 months to a year. I am not sure we have the same viewpoint on this. I know that if I took a vacation, the company would more than likely shut down during that time. In fact, this has already happened where we gave everyone a day off.

Our current agreement is to split our profits which can be in range from $10,000.00 to $20,000.00 per month (not our real profit)

I also gave my business partner a % of the company.

I have been feeling lately that I should be paid more; however, I do not want to lose my business partner. I think the fact I work almost double the amount and do not take vacations would be the reason why.

I am at a loss for what I should do. I did not know I would feel this way when we agreed to partner and came up with our agreement. Should I approach my business partner with some changes or should I not bring it up? Are there any compromises that can be made?

Edit: The reason we can't pay salaries is we don't know how much we will bill in fees per month. This is very much like a law office.

    Business Name

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 04:22 PM PST

    Hi,

I was curious in everyone's opinion if making a business name using part of my actual name would be better than a fictitious one.

For example Hail Computer Repair or A1 Computer Repair.

Which do you think would be better for gaining client's?

    Thanks

    Ecom store for sale

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 08:46 PM PST

Hello everyone I am looking to sell my store, it is a pet niche and I got a lot of sales but via DIRECT selling.

I jumped the gun on running via ecommerce and dropshipping and realized my marketing and campaign handling knowledge is not enough.

I was initially planning to close the store but some of my ecom friends told me that the store is great and looking nice and if I was able to sell in our country a lot of products it means the products are great and marketable (and yes I know this is fair to say because I focused on product research and has a lot of aliexpress sales and sales in shopee and lazada) all are high in sales in all platforms.

But thing is what worked for me is direct selling thru friends relatives and eventually their network (via word of mouth) so I'd like to focus more on that.

Ecom friends told me that if you are great at marketing and know your way around campaigns, then you will have a great investment in this considering also its niche.

I am selling the store for only $1,900 so if anyone is interested kindly hit me up. Thank you!

Please delete if post is not allowed.

PS I have a good relationship with the supplier and they have no MOQ.

    Thank you!

Best way to grow my customer base as a freelance Youtube video editor

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 11:23 AM PST

My girlfriend and I are both freelance Youtube video editors. Our clients are both in Europe and the US. We found them all by emailing them but this is a very time-consuming process as I have to find my prospects by scrolling Youtube.

I'm looking for a better way to grow my customer base. Any ideas?

Anyone know how to remove hateful/racist business review from google?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 04:40 AM PST

A customer left a hateful/racist comment about the business my elderly mom owns on the google business page. They explicitly said the business has gone down because a middle eastern owner has taken over. I reported this to google yet they refuse to remove it. I do not think mentioning race, ethnicity, or religion should be allowed in google business reviews - it's wrong, illogical and hurtful.

    Starting a business from freelance

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 11:12 AM PST

    Hello r/smallbusiness friends.

The last few years I've held an LLC under my name that I've been using for freelancing purposes in the production industry. I'm at a point now to where I want to expand into a business, from just doing freelance work to renting out services, equipment, and labour. I'd also like to move into a small storefront/warehouse.

To do this, should I establish a new LLC under the name of the business I'd like to open? Or create a subsidiary after my already established named LLC? Perhaps just change the name? Are there potentially other options I'm not considering or overlooking?

    Thank you all,

    Product Testing

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 02:48 PM PST

Needing some advice… am launching a pet bed in Australia. There are currently no legal requirements in terms of testing etc in Australia

Testing to European standards (REACH testing) would cost 4k. Supplier is certain it would pass this testing

Would you get a pet bed tested? Do most small businesses do this kind of testing when it's not actually required ?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 05:19 PM PST

I had studied through the booklet and Im ready to test but if I have to do a whole different one for this reason its frustrating.

How to use LLC profit for investing tax-efficiently?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 04:52 PM PST

I'm a self-employed IT consultant and run LLC to receive payments from my clients.

I have payroll for myself, so every month I get a paycheck and pay taxes on it as W2.

The thing is that I receive more money than I payout every month and it's accumulating on the business account. I don't like the idea to withdraw this money through W2 because of high tax rate.

I cannot reinvest this money in the IT business because it doesn't make that much sense.

But I would like to invest this money through real estate or stocks. But I don't want to mix my IT business with non-relevant investments.

Is there any legal way to invest the money without paying it out to myself and without buying it under my original LLC?

As an idea: open another LLC for the investments purposes, then my IT LLC lend a chunk of money to new LLC with 0.01% interest rate.

This way I don't pay taxes and still use this money for investments.

If it's a legally correct idea, could I lend it to myself with that tiny interest rate and then just buy real estate under my name?

    Thanks in advance, dear redditors.

Pest Control Company - Need Scalable Vehicle Solution

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 04:28 PM PST

I have owned this business for a couple years, and we've grown to 6 locations throughout Texas and the Midwest. We have somehow made it this far without financing a car, but the time has sadly come to an end.

Obviously I need business credit to get a loan, but the main problem I'm having is finding a SCALABLE solution to vehicles. Every major car manufacturer forces me to buy a their car through their local dealer, which is fine but then I have to buy cars in every area, with a local dealer. Not really possible for me.

The other option is leasing a car, but I don't know if that will be worth it because we drive a lot of miles.

We are expanding to a couple new areas and will need to buy vehicles there. I'm hoping there's an obvious solution that I'm not thinking about.

I'm 27 and relatively inexperienced in the business financing world. Any help is appreciated!

Should I announce a price increase to my customers, or just do it?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 10:06 AM PST

I have a small family entertainment place (think a "mommy and me" type gym for little kids).

We charge people either by the visit or for a recurring monthly membership.

I'm considering raising prices by about 10%. I would leave existing members at their current rates, and charge higher rates for new daily visits and new memberships.

I think most people wouldn't care or necessarily notice, and we're still a good value at the higher rates (so I think). But obviously some people would and I don't want to piss people off.

Main Question: should I announce the change on social media so that regulars aren't surprised? Or just do it and let people find out the next time they book a visit?

Bonus question: How should I decide if it is the right time to raise rates? It's not like we're full, but that's more due to seasonal changes than anything else. I'm thinking of doing it now because we're about to be a lot busier as it gets colder. The new rates wouldn't significantly change how we compare to the competition (some charge more, some less).

    Thanks!

Is my referral loyalty program a pyramid scheme?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 08:56 AM PST

I have a referral system for clients to refer mates at mates rates. Thinking of canning it because I recently learnt the definition of "pyramid scheme".

Basically, referrers get a finders fee at what I thought was a pretty generous percentage capped at a certain amount.

I can't figure out if the loyalty referral system is technically the same definition as a pyramid scheme. Would love to hear what people generally perceive of this referral system.

The last thing I want to do is to have a business model that is a "pyramid scheme" or seem dodgy.
