You've spent countless hours thinking of a business idea, done all the research, maybe you've found product manufacturers, worked out an initial business plan, marketing plan, etc. You're all set up to start a business, but you haven't. I'm curious to know what's stopping you.

I've discovered a niche retail market need in my locale; how do I research the strength of potential demand?

    Posted: 22 Nov 2021 07:17 AM PST

For the last 10 years I have freelanced services for local "metaphysical shops" as a side business and do very well. One of the shops I used to frequent did a high volume of sales of loose herbs, which wasn't their main focus as it was primarily a book store. That shop didn't survive the pandemic and I've found that the other shops in the area don't carry a large enough volume or variety of herbs for the demand, despite getting multiple calls a day for obscure folk remedy herbs and teas. They refer customers to organic bulk stores, which only carry popular culinary spices or overpriced "herbal supplements".

Online the market is saturated (but that's also true of the services i sell and I am in high demand for in person work so the online saturation doesn't reflect brick and mortar demand in this niche). Besides my experience of witnessing a clear unmet demand for herbs within my niche "magickal and metaphysical and alternative health" clients, I do not know how to research or test actual market demand and potential profitability. One of the local shop owners is willing to help mentor me on the hows of starting a retail business in exchange for cross promotion, as we'd be selling different products to the same market. My clients are all VERY excited about the possibility of an herb store. I'm just not sure if their interest reflects actual viability. Though markup for herbs and teas is great, the products are low cost so the business would largely depend on volume of sales so market analysis is my primary hurdle before actually sinking any real cost into another startup.

What tools could i use to discover business viability? How can I test actual demand versus theoretical?

Customer's customer wants to buy my raw materials to give to my competitor

    Posted: 22 Nov 2021 04:18 PM PST

Material shortages are a real problem in the COVID era, and my organization has invested in the required materials. Do free market principles go out the window in a time of global trade crisis? How do I explain my position without calling my biggest source of income a bunch of shameless half wits?

Treat finding a co-founder like you would dating

    Posted: 22 Nov 2021 12:38 PM PST

A couple of days ago I was listening to Guy Raz's podcast How I Built This episode with Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong.

While the whole interview was interesting, what caught my ear was the bit where Brian explains how he met his co-founder.

Turns out, just before getting accepted into Y Combinator, Armstrong had decided to join forces with Ben Reeves (co-founder of blockhain.info). They mostly chatted over skype and email, and only met up for the first time before pitching to Y Combinator folk.

Shortly after getting funded by Y Combinator, Reeves missed a couple of meetings and wasn't easily reachable. His heart wasn't in it so Brian decided to break up with him, figuratively speaking.

After that experience, Brian took a more reasonable approach. An approach I compare to dating.

He got an email from Fred Ehrsam, looked at his credentials (he had graduated from Duke with a CS degree + Econ minor; worked for Goldman Sachs), and decided to meet him over for a coffee. Kinda like a first date, huh?

Their first impressions of each other were fine enough for Brian to offer Fred an option of working together for 2 months. 2 weeks in, Brian could see that Fred is an independent thinker with a very strong work ethic and he was already acting like a proper co-founder would.

After 4 months of working together, Brian popped the question: "Will you be my co-founder?". The rest is [an ongoing] history.

Brian attributes a lot of the success of Coinbase to Fred saying that he could not have done it without him. Finding a good co-founder matters.

The full episode of the podcast episode can be found here.

I also published an article about this on founderness.

I think I have a unique idea and I am afraid to share it with people so that someone would not steal it. And I need help.

    Posted: 22 Nov 2021 03:21 AM PST

Is it wise to make some kind of legal contract with a person who would create my site? For the reason that he doesn't steal my idea because I will have to tell him what the plan and program of the site he will make is.

Can you guys review my new site?

    Posted: 22 Nov 2021 05:14 PM PST

Hey all, I'm a developer and make lightning fast, Google/SEO friendly and custom websites. I made a post a few days ago and didn't really get an answer, instead people focused on my website in an unproductive manner. I'm sure they were just focusing on the design of the site rather than the development/functionality of it.

I'm not a designer so that's usually the biggest complaint of course, so I thought I'd post my site after playing with some different designs and see what you think.

So I'd love to know about the look and design of the site above the content but all questions, comments, or concerns are welcome and appreciated. I made a few changes since my last post.

    New site: https://websitesbytrevor.com

    Old site: https://wbttemplate.netlify.app

My goal is to have a bunch of different templates, themes and components to use to have a very solid foundation for my sites and more variety for my clients, which allows me to spend more time on each website. Lmk what you think and I'd be happy to answer any questions about my site or yours. Cheers!

Advice from someone who got kicked out of community college

    Posted: 22 Nov 2021 08:55 PM PST

I see a lot of posts about people who want to be an entrepreneur but don't know where to start.

I dropped out of university. Then was kicked out of community college. I was lost but knew I didn't want a traditional 9-5 job. I wanted to run my own business.

Guess what? I needed I traditional 9-5 job. I tried 4-5 businesses that failed miserably. I then got a "traditional" job and learned so much. I quickly rose in rank until I was making ~$200k by the time I was 25. Only then did I see gaps in the market & have the ability as well as the confidence to pursue it. In our first year I did almost $500k while only doing a few hours a week. This year we grew the team and will close out the year at just over $2M. I still work my corporate job & do a few hours a week on the business. My point is that sure, it's possible to be some magnificent unicorn who never worked or had experience yet started some 7 figure company by working hard. But there's absolutely nothing wrong with getting a 9-5 job and leveraging it to the fullest extent. Matter of fact, I'd recommend it.

How do I start this business without much capital?

    Posted: 22 Nov 2021 12:58 PM PST

I've been obsessed with tiny modular homes for quite some time now and recently got interested in selling them in my country.

I found some suppliers overseas but the problem is that I literally have $5k of savings (I'm a student), which is not nearly enough to stock up and sell.

I thought I could create a website, social media accounts, a marketing strategy and if there are any buyers, i would create a cad file for them to approve, we would sign a sales contract and i would explain that there is a manufacturing time of a couple of months necessary and a 75% down payment which i would use to buy the modular home and get it delivered to them.

Could this work? Any other ideas?

Should I post personal development posts on LinkedIn?

    Posted: 22 Nov 2021 05:15 AM PST

I've been writing a personal email newsletter about ideas and lessons I learned from books since Feb this year (29 subscribers, all of them are friends and colleagues).

I hope to expand my audience next year and hope to gain an audience to eventually monetize my effort through online courses, guides and/or coaching.

I don't really know where or how to start. I'm not sure if posting to LinkedIn would be a wise move as I'm not an expert in coaching/counselling or personal development. Not sure if it'd be well received or would people say "this is LinkedIn, not Facebook."

I'm a junior sales development rep for a global business news company. Writing about personal development stuff has no relevance to my job and I don't have credentials as an expert of this field.

    Your thoughts are appreciated!

How much long term strategy to include in MVP, Customer Interviews, etc.

    Posted: 22 Nov 2021 08:46 PM PST

    Hello,

A bit of context: two years ago I was working for a restaurant chain with 200 locations and $300M in revenue. I worked in supply chain. I was leading an innovative tech project as a pilot which we (supply chain) wanted to roll out to our entire supply/restaurant network. The problem was... I had to pitch the project over and over again to multiple stakeholders, oftentimes the same people, consistently. Well, the pitch wasn't the problem. The problem was that it seemed like every update I went into there were decisionmakers who wanted to zoom out and see the big picture - the full ROI years down the road. Great! I love multiyear visions. The next meeting... a decisionmaker would say "too big of scope, narrow it down to what's tangible in the next year." Ok.... redid our ROI focusing solely on the immediate benefit in a year. Next meeting... too narrow, not enough ROI. We won't launch this, go bigger.

This went back and forth for A YEAR. I would have much rather had someone just give me a red light/green light and let me move on to the next project or the next step in this project.

OK u/cowsbeek, what the hell does this have to do with start ups? Well, I've identified an opportunity and am pursuing it. It is technology and supply chain related. My problem now is, how much information is too little/too much when building an MVP, interviewing customers, pitching to investors, etc. I've watched enough to understand the feature/product/company spectrum and my MVP would certainly be a product that fits into my overall company vision. But I need to start somewhere with the capital I have.

So, what advice do you have? Do I pitch the product and leave the multiyear vision out in hopes that I can find enough traction with just the product? Do I risk losing investors and customers if I focus narrowly on the product and don't flesh out the strategy? Do I explain that this is just product one and we plan to ramp?

Basically, should my MVP website mention other products that I don't plan to launch until 3-5 years? Or leave them out?

Thanks in advance for your insight!

    Need recommendations for business.

    Posted: 22 Nov 2021 08:36 PM PST

I consider myself a car guy, I have a huge love for cars, especially older gen JDM cars. I've found myself wanting to create a company in order to help people to enjoy driving cars more, or just make the overall experience for non car people and car people better while driving.

I'm 19 with a budget of a few thousand and I'm struggling to think up something that could make sales, I was thinking all natural car air fresheners that hang off the mirror, or maybe a little car buddy like the hula girl, something along those lines. but I cant think of many other ideas besides these.

Also came up with my own key chain and lanyard ideas but they don't differ from other companies and they for sure wouldn't sell.

In short, I need some recommendations as to what people may want in their car that may better their driving experience even just a little.

Artist interested in finding an art broker to work with

    Posted: 22 Nov 2021 10:51 AM PST

Hello redditors, I am a 32 male artist from California. I've been selling portraits and doing commissioned art for about a decade now. I haven't marketed myself hardly at all and have still managed to sell my works on a pretty consistent basis mostly through word of mouth. I display a new series in a restaurant near my hometown every couple months and have managed to sell about 3/4ths of what I put up often without even displaying a for sale sign. I know im capable of selling my stuff for a much higher price than I have been, but I have just struggled to market myself and to meet bigger clients. I've felt for years now that I could accomplish so much more if I had someone who could bring me clients or potential jobs, but I have no idea where to begin looking to find someone to work alongside. I specialize in portraits on wood but can tackle landscapes, animals etc without struggle.

Recently I've been thinking about trying to get into selling my works as NFTs (I have a pretty large archive of digital pieces that I've never attempted to sell) but again with a lack of knowledge in the crypto world I find myself unsure of how to move forward.

I want, with all my heart, to be able to live and support my family with my artistic skills full time instead of working 40 hours a week at job and then coming home to dump another 20 hours a week into drawing, painting and digitally creating. I need some guidance, and I need to find someone who can handle the business side of things so that I can focus on what I am good at... being creative.

Any advice is welcome and helpful. Check out my IG account @Dcostello_art to get a feel forwhat I am currently creating.

    Entrepreneur from a Sales Background?

    Posted: 22 Nov 2021 02:07 PM PST

I have been browsing this subreddit for a few months and have read threads similar to this, but still wanted to make my own so I can ask/answer from my perspective.

I come from a car sales background. Started as busser -> car parts -> service advisor -> service manager -> car sales -> internet sales manager. Money was great, but I also found out that despite my love of vehicles I hate selling them and the environment that comes with it.

Anyway, covid happened and now I figured it's time to buckle down and make money on my own. I've had business ideas like everyone else. I worked with a more technical friend for a bit but things would always fizzle out when we'd start feeling like frauds. The whole "no way this will work, people will never buy from us, etc." I can't make anything technical so when he's out I have no choice but to be out. Seems like some people find making money without a job easy and others can't even picture someone giving us a dollar outside of a W2.

So the thing is, I'd really love to create something but I have 0, and I mean absolutely 0 technical skills. Car sales as a background is like a joke and everyone who starts something here appears to have become near experts in their technical field, mostly programmers. I'm 27 now and it seems to be too old to have little to no skills.

What can I do with this limited background? Do I need to learn some niche for 5 years and become the absolute utmost expert authority? Should I find someone else who is technical? If I do, I feel like they would be doing most of the hard work and I would be contributing nothing. How did other salespeople make their own businesses?

What do you use to automate forms with signatures?

    Posted: 22 Nov 2021 09:26 AM PST

Employees are on the road each day visiting customers and need to fill and sign documents and then send via email to several specific email addresses on their iPads. They are currently using Adobe Acrobat on their iPads but it's been painful.

I want to invest in or find a free secure tool to automate the process so they open up one thing, fill out the necessary fields, click continue and it takes them to the next document then at the end they click a button which automatically sends an email to the appropriate people.

    Any suggestions?

    Too good to be true?

    Posted: 22 Nov 2021 04:56 PM PST

I have a business plan that sounds way too easy and good to be true. First off I want to tell you guys I have never been the "business" kind of person. I don't "grind" for success, I'm just a software engineer passionate about math and visual art, never cared about being successful or economically free. Therefore, not only have I ever had any experience administering a company, I never even thought or did any research about it until very recently.

I have a business solution for the industry in which my mom works in that will automate a good chunk of work they do. The industry in which she works in is very under-modernized and I realized I could easily write a software for them that could change their game entirely. Even better : they don't even have to USE the software, it's completely automatic. No one has done this before, strangely enough.

I checked the top posts of the startup subreddit, and found a list of points to check if an idea is a good business idea :

10 points if you can point to folks making MILLIONS! 10 points if it's a service/software instead of product 10 points if you can get customers 60 days from now 10 points if there is a chance for automatic recurring revenue 10 points if the price of the thing is over $50 10 points if the thing is unsexy, boring, but people NEED it 10 points if it's something you've bought yourself 10 points if the thing is less than 13 ozs (If it's a product) or you can divorce it from your time if it's a service . 10 points if you can explain what it is in 5 words and a 5 year old would understand.

And this idea I have checks all of these and more. My mother has a lot of connections to this industry and I already have customers lined up if I make the software. What's more? I can finish this software, if I work full time, in under two months, worst case scenario, in under 6 months. Not only that, if only 30% of the clients in my area use my solution, I could see profits of 200 000$ a year. And that's only in the surroundings of my city.... The whole industry could profit from it.

Well as you can see, this sounds way too good to be true. This idea sounds like an instant win. I usually tend to be pessimistic, so I'm skeptical, however I don't see any realistic any way this could fail. to reiterate : - I already have clients lined up if I finish the product (thanks mom) - It's an EASY software to program, I could completely finish it under 6 months - I have the funds to hire developers if I ever need help - The old industry I'm making the software for doesn't even have to use it, so they don't need to adapt to new technology whatsoever - This industry has a shit ton of money, and my clients would be willing to pay a lot per month for this program. - This software needs little maintenance/updates

Now, I know I'm new to this business-startup world, I'm naive, I'm vulnerable, I have a lot to learn. But I am asking you : Have you ever been in the same boat? Am I alone in being so confident about this idea? Mind you I already read so many "genius" business ideas (being a developper with entrepreneur friends). 99% of them I think are shit unlike this plan I have. Sounds pretentious doesn't it? Well, This idea really does seem perfect, it even seems too good to be true. Please Tell me if I sound crazy. I'm going to leave my job in about 4 months to work on it. I'm serious.

Or businesses in this industry are only viable for d2c?

Fitness/health niche: looking to buy traffic on blogs/sites as well as do list swaps

    Posted: 22 Nov 2021 04:01 PM PST

Hi all. I am looking to buy traffic on sites that are in the health/fitness niche. I will write all the content and pay to put it on your site. Everything is unique and written by me. I'm a decent writer as well, happy to provide samples upon request (don't want to post them here bc I assume mods are trigger happy when they see links).

Same goes for email lists. If you have a list that you think would be interested in something in the fitness/health niche, let me know and we can arrange something.

My target demographic is men aged 30+ based in the US.

Your audience doesn't have to be a fitness/health one either. It can be in tech, fashion, dating, B2B... use your best judgement.

    Monetizing (small) internet/tv fame?

    Posted: 22 Nov 2021 03:57 PM PST

Hi all! I am going to be on television for a popular show (NDA signed, can't elaborate), that won't be released for about 6 months. Typically people on this show get a small burst of fans immediately, typically 50k+ fans (sometimes upwards of a few hundred thousand if they are popular with the audience) across all social media platforms.

I recently successfully flipped my business (service industry, have no desire to do it again) and was going to take the next few months off for travel/self-betterment, but in the meantime also wanted to work on a project where I could utilize the mild internet popularity to my benefit.

I wanted to be proactive and have something set in place/promoted on my social media before the show airs and was looking for some ideas. I previously have modeled and have minor actress roles, but have little desire to do that, I've only done them because I happened to run into the right people at the right time (currently playboy for another country does want me as their covergirl/centerfold but I'm not about that life and want people to respect and admire me for more than my appearance). I'm also not interested in starting an online clothing brand like everyone else haha

I have unlimited time to work on said project, and would like to keep the budget under 10k (willing to go up to 20k) My best friend is a software engineer and also offered to help with whatever I need for free if I need it. Does anyone have suggestions or ideas that may be helpful? Thanks!
