    UPDATE: I got a 5k electric bill!

    Posted: 03 Sep 2021 04:56 PM PDT

Well, what a week for weird shit.

    Reference: https://www.reddit.com/r/smallbusiness/comments/pdfvbw/just_got_a_5k_electric_bill/

Got a lot of great insight, thanks to the people who insisted that the amount of power usage was impossible according to physics.

Spoke with my energy provider after getting this insight and went in HOT. Started out with all the probing questions: What safeguards are in place to prevent errors, how is data verified, what happens in all these scenarios.

Short answer: Fuck you. Commercial customers have 0 safeguards in place for billing accuracy and mistakes and all liability is on the consumer! But we're happy to do another meter read to verify the bill, but until then, were sticking by our current assessment. I explained the physics that this was IMPOSSIBLE. They then offered a full audit of the account. I said great! While you verify things on your end, I get MY money back.

Provider: LOL. No. Meter reading dept will contact you tomorrow, goodbye.

Got a call first thing next AM from the meter readers. Sub contractor it seems. "Hey, we've got no idea, happy to do a re-read, well get it done ASAP". Then we get a hurricane.

Meter read finally gets done this morning.

Noteworthy: There was a meter read that was reported as an ACTUAL read by a HUMAN, not an ESTIMATE for both this billing cycle AND back in June.

Speak with meter company today: "So, this is weird. Our reader went in and reported there is no meter on your line. We'll get that fixed."

Great, can you explain these previous reads because there's been no construction in there for at least X months (before i entered the place). Basically meaning this meter has NEVER been read. Interesting.

He's got no answer, says he knows very little of the whole situation, so I explain it all to him, he says "Okay, that's fucking dumb. New meter expected to go in next week. Speak with billing and explain all this to them."

"Actually, I did explained that this bill was impossible and they told me to fuck off."

He told me ask for a manager let them know there is literally no meter here and see how that plays.

So I do that. I explain the situation to manager at provider, she says she's totally unaware of any issues on the account. Says she'll call me back in a few hours when she can research everything.

A few hours later she calls back and is like: I still have no clue wtf is going on here. While we figure this out, I'll get billing to refund you until we can get it all sorted.

Moral of the story: I had to hold them to the fire, hard, but they clearly fucked something up massively and are now trying to hide it because any more formal inquiry, like small claims court, they would lose in a second is my guess.

Next up: I now need to a sue a company who is collecting payments from my customers online, presenting themselves as my company, without my permission. Gave them 2 opportunities to settle it directly. My lawyer is filing suit next week.

Anyone started or know anyone who’s started a recycling pickup business?

    Posted: 03 Sep 2021 12:51 PM PDT

My hometown (17,000 people) doesn't have recycling pickup. They do have a recycling center but you have to drive there and drop it off.

I can definitely see people paying $10-$20 a month for weekly or bi-weekly recycling pickup, but I haven't figured out the logistics of the business yet.

If anyone has experience with this or knows someone who does I'd love to hear about it before I start my research!

Those in Construction...How Are You Dealing With Costs?

    Posted: 03 Sep 2021 06:12 AM PDT

I am just curious how those in the construction industry deal with escalating costs. Our jobs require permits, so many of the jobs we sold 6 months ago are now essentially being done for 0 profit. Thankfully, we have adjusted our prices and future work has a larger buffer built in, but has everyone been just eating it? Our new contracts (started in March) state that if the price goes up more than 5% the customer is responsible. We actually sit with the customer and go over that part because I don't want there to be any surprises. Between material delays, cost increases, and labor shortages I just feel really tired this week. On the bright side, we had two really great people start this week, prices seem to be stabilizing, and I truly love what I do. I guess I am just curious about what the industry standard has been. As a final note...I realized if we can survive during this epidemic, we can probably survive anything. Have a lovely Labor Day!

Edit- I really appreciate everybody's answers. Sometimes just knowing other people are having the same struggles and are still out there pushing help.

Need advice on how to promote my book about Mushrooms — I wrote it anonymously

    Posted: 03 Sep 2021 08:27 AM PDT

Hi everyone! I wrote a book after undergoing a year of intense psychedelic experiences. I wrote it under a pseudonym because I didn't want any backlash in my professional life. I poured my heart and soul into it but now I'm having issues getting it out there well…because how do "I" promote something "I" didn't write.

It's called let's go do some mushrooms and it's only available on Amazon. AND Amazon won't let you advertise books that have "adult" content in so now I'm like … 🤷‍♂️ wtf do I do. Any suggestions can help!

I don't know what kind of software I really need!

    Posted: 03 Sep 2021 10:25 PM PDT

I'm having trouble sorting through all the info on all the different options out there. I work for an editing and ghostwriting company thay has approximately 80 employees total. I've been tasked with growing our small publishing department (only 4 employees so far).

I'm looking for an easy app/software that I can use to: - track sales of each specific publishing packages, audiobook sales, promotional website sales, and other publishing related sales. - track payments to employees (preferably having some funtion to automatically deduct employee pay from each sale to display profit) - track marketing expenses vs profits

Ill be creating advertising campaigns for each type of service, but I'm not sure what type of program I need to monitor sales growth. I like to see the info visually in graphs and charts so I can understand how all of the different parts are trending and fit together.

Hoping someone can help me out! I don't mind spending a little money, but I'm hoping there's something free or cheap that fits what I'm looking for. Thanks for any help!!

Name ideas for an edgy, chic jewelry business for men and women?

    Posted: 03 Sep 2021 09:46 PM PDT

Help me name my online business please! I'm trying to think of a name that's good for both men and women jewelry, but without using the word jewelry. And the aesthetic is very edgy. (Biker rings, vintage ring sets, necklace chains, with some girly options for other women as well.) I wanted to include the word rose in it somehow but any suggestions help, thank you!

    Question about DBA names.

    Posted: 04 Sep 2021 01:11 AM PDT

I want to start a mobile mechanic service and I'm fine with the name of the business being my name if I'm understanding correctly on how that works. My question though is on advertising materials (business cards, car door magnets) can I have a description of the business such as "mobile auto repair" or would that be considered me trying to make that the name? Looking at the information about it I can find online I would only be able to use my name to promote my business and not a description. But that doesn't make sense to me. If I do file a DBA can I have a separate description for the business or can I only describe it in the name? I'll be honest, I'm really not understanding anything about starting a business.

    Shortened LLC name?

    Posted: 03 Sep 2021 08:35 PM PDT

My area is named one dictionary word that sounds cool. My business goes by AREA SERVICES. I plan on registering the company in the coming weeks and noticed that AREA LLC is available in my state (US). I thought it would be neat to have the legitimate company name being just that word, and just doing work as AREA SERVICES. I understand there is no real obvious benefit, but I want to one day use the LLC for other unrelated local businesses and as a means to invest in equities and real estate.

    What are your thoughts?

Trying to look more into this provision that allows employers to pay $5,250 of employees student loan tax free. Husband is a self employed handyman which he has an LLC for. Could we use this provision to save on taxes when paying his student loans?

Would you say it's "shady" to delete comments on social media posts?

    Posted: 04 Sep 2021 12:05 AM PDT

I feel like it's just common courtesy that if you have an issue with your order, you reach out to the business to fix it. If they don't, then sure, speak out. It really bothers me when people never reach out to you and decide to bash you anyway.

A previous customer commented on a social media post of ours about how our products were trash. I found her order from her username and checked to see if we had any emails from them -- none. I deleted the comment and sent her an email asking if she had an issue with her order as I had not gotten any emails from her, and if so, please let me know so I can assist (no response ofc).

    • 1) there's a million reasons a customer might be unhappy that have nothing to do with any actual problem with the product. I feel like it's misinformative to other potential future customers.
    • 2) without actually reaching out to customer service, your opinion is only one aspect of the actual business experience.
    • 3) I don't think public comments are the appropriate place to have back and forths regarding order issues.
    • 4) they're fully welcome to post their "bad review" on their own page if they wish, I just don't feel like I should feel obligated to allow them to use my own page to promote their review (just like I would delete any comment of somebody self-promoting their own store)

So yeah, I don't think I would consider this silencing them by any means.

Nothing actually happened after this, just curious if I'd have a reasonable argument if somebody tried to claim malicious intent from me deleting negative comments.

many times ive had to turn people away because we're at full capacity and ive gotten much verbal abuse and negative reviews because of it.

is there anyway for me to state that i need appointments on my listing?

    Food industry/DoorDash questions

    Posted: 03 Sep 2021 11:28 PM PDT

    Hey!

How much is DoorDash costing you to use them?

How much are you having to raise your prices?

How are you determining your delivery fee on there (or them)?

How long is the contractual obligation?

I'm considering using them in order to boost visibility for my small bakery, but only temporarily enough to do just that. I don't want to be stuck in something with them for long though because of their charges.

    Thank you!

What kind of lawyer should I talk to?

    Posted: 03 Sep 2021 05:59 PM PDT

Hello, I am looking to start a business within the next 1-3 years. However, I currently work at a job of which my business was based on. It's the same idea, only I'm targeting completely different clientele. I don't recall signing a "non-compete" form, regardless.

What kind of lawyer should I talk to abut this? And getting my business started, in general, with all the right regulations?

    Thank you.

    Applying for VAT in UK

    Posted: 03 Sep 2021 09:14 PM PDT

Hi we are thinking of acquiring an online website (non-VAT registered), and from what it looks like, it would surpass the VAT threshold in the UK within a year. We have a UK parent company under which the website will operate under but we haven't applied for VAT on the HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) page yet.

Would really appreciate any useful links to some good reading material if possible. Plus nobody in our team is well versed in accounts, but can work a spreadsheet well. Do you think an accountant is required, or can someone with basic understanding of accounts do?

    Would like your thoughts. Thanks.

    Advice With Handmade Watercolor Names!

    Posted: 03 Sep 2021 04:19 PM PDT

I am currently planning on opening an online shop for handmade watercolors, and had a question regarding the colors. If I named the paints, should I name the colors the color pigment I used (ex. yellow ochre or ultramarine), or give them a cute themed name, then put the pigment name in the description so the buyer knows what the actual color is for reference? An example could be naming a purple paint something like "Amethyst," but then having "made with eggplant purple pigment" in the listing description. Thanks so much!!

Recommendations for Business Credit Card? Discover won't increase my credit limit.

    Posted: 03 Sep 2021 07:46 PM PDT

I've had a Discover business credit card for about 1.5 years. The credit limit on this card is too low now considering my business spending, so I called discover to increase my credit limit. They told me that discover is currently not doing credit line increases on business cards... What? I've never had any issues getting credit line increases on personal cards. And the rep could not give me a reason why - when I probed further, she talked to a manager and came back with "it was a business decision." I don't know if this is just me or what... Never missed payments on any cards, so not sure what's going on.

Long story short, I need a new card in order to have a large enough credit limit for my business spending. Recommendations on a card that will grow increase my credit limit while my business grows?
