    FEMA Flood Insurance Question

    Posted: 03 Sep 2021 07:05 PM PDT

I reviewed my flood policy and I'm concerned on the part that says "Building does not have addition(s) or extension(s). I think I got confused and want to know if I'm in the clear or not as the carport (under the same roof) was turned to a room prior to buying this insurance.

    To give you an example,
    https://www.google.com/search?q=house+with+carport&tbm=isch&ved=2ahUKEwjUnNa1nOTyAhWNaKwKHReQDIEQ2-cCegQIABAA&oq=house+with+carport&gs_lcp=CgNpbWcQAzIFCAAQgAQyBQgAEIAEMgUIABCABDIFCAAQgAQyBQgAEIAEMgUIABCABDIFCAAQgAQyBQgAEIAEMgYIABAFEB4yBggAEAUQHjoICAAQgAQQsQM6CwgAEIAEELEDEIMBUNj3A1ishgRg7YYEaABwAHgAgAFiiAGFB5IBAjExmAEAoAEBqgELZ3dzLXdpei1pbWfAAQE&sclient=img&ei=K9MyYZTbKo3RsQWXoLKICA#imgrc=Uk9sAn6RjmfPuM
Even though the roof wasn't changed or altered a door, windows and ac was added apart from walls. Basically it was turned to a room. How screwed am I?

Coverage A: Building Property--Additions and Extensions

Two buildings connected by one of five approved methods are insured as one building. At the insured's option, additions and extensions may be separately insured.

    The approved "connectors" are:

    • Rigid exterior wall
    • Solid load bearing interior wall
    • Stairway
    • Elevated walkway
    • Roof

An advantage to insuring two buildings as one, when approved connectors are present, results because of saving separate policy fees when the combined replacement cost of the building is less than the maximum amount of insurance available under the program.

    • One to four family dwellings can be insured up to $250,000.
    • Writing a single policy will save the insured the cost of two Federal Policy Fees.

The Federal Policy Fee is a charge made on every NFIP flood insurance policy to help offset the cost of running NFIP.

    Thank you in advance!

    Lying on auto insurance quote

    Posted: 04 Sep 2021 03:18 AM PDT

I don't have my drivers license yet but let say hypothetically speaking, I buy my insurance from progressive online and I put that I DO have my driver license. Will they ask for proof? There's no way for me to get my license before insurance because I need insurance to register the vehicle and practice on it. I'm planning to switch to another auto insurance after 6 month where I don't have to lie anymore since I will actually have my license by then.

Insurance company unaware I was missing comprehensive coverage for a year until total loss. Massive panic setting in. What can I do?

    Posted: 03 Sep 2021 08:54 PM PDT

My car was submerged in Hurricane Ida and is a total loss.

When I went to check insurance and make a claim, it seems I don't have comprehensive coverage, nor have I ever for the entire length of the loan. For more than a year. I spoke to a rep who said it is always required to have comprehensive insurance and should be in your loan agreement. This is something I signed but did not see the part about required comprehensive. They confirmed it was there. They want me to continue to pay a 12k loan on a car that is in the junk yard. The car is listed as collateral on the loan.

How did this go unnoticed for an entire year? How was this not immediately noticed when I started the policy? Who is responsible for ensuring the auto insurance correctly honors the loan agreement. These services are all through USAA, loan and insurance. Is this a breach of fiduciary duty by my bank?

Did I get completely screwed? Any suggestions to get some relief, next steps, or how to resolve? I am panicking extremely bad and cannot pay for a new car.

    Total loss?

    Posted: 03 Sep 2021 04:55 PM PDT

Hello! I live in Utah and got rear ended yesterday. Car has significant frame damage which the auto shop said would be more than 10k to repair. My car before the accident was valued at around 25k. Salvage value is at around 11k. Has anyone had a claim similar in Utah? What's the threshold for the insurance to call it a total loss?

Would this claim be covered or denied?

    Posted: 03 Sep 2021 07:04 PM PDT

    https://www.reddit.com/r/IdiotsInCars/comments/phfauo/driving_a_tesla_y_into_a_building/

This video was posted several hours ago and there seems to be a large number of people in the comments saying that the insurance would deny this claim based on the video evidence as "gross negligence".

I don't want to get into a discussion of whether they're at fault (obviously) or if they're idiots (again it's obvious). but would like to know what the general consensus here is assuming:

    A) they don't lie to their insurance when making the claim

    B) they have enough liability insurance (not just whatever the state minimum is)

    C) they actually purchased enough collision coverage

Is this covered? I'm of the belief that it is, they did not intentionally crash this car so there is no intent or fraud here. He was driving speeding and lost control of the vehicle, which leads me to believe this is covered.

Got an HSA welcome letter out of the blue.

    Posted: 03 Sep 2021 06:41 PM PDT

Came home late Friday and opened the mail. Got two letters from TASC on how to access our online accounts. Said a card will be sent in a separate letter.

I'm not currently eligible for an hsa. No one in the house has a new job, or signed up for insurance.

It's a long weekend, and I'm not sure what is going on, or what damage control I need to be doing.

    Any thoughts or suggestions?

Ran a credit report and don't see anything.

If an insurer acts in bad faith investigating a claim made by a third party, does it matter if their insured was liable for damages?

    Posted: 03 Sep 2021 05:00 PM PDT

[FL] I was directed by my condo board to submit a claim with the building's commercial GL policy for property damage caused by a common element. Their insurance company assessed damages and investigated my claim. They dragged it out for months only to deny my claim and then assign fault to my neighbor, indicating this was not a common element and that it's my neighbor's property. They even make other errors describing the pipe in question. Regardless of who's liable party, can a third party recover damages here from the insurer for their bad faith claim / settlement practices?

Question about premiums increasing after car accident

    Posted: 03 Sep 2021 10:21 AM PDT

When a car insurance premium goes up after an accident, does it make a difference if the accident was paid out of liability or if it was paid out of collision? For example, if the accident was only paid out of liability, is it only the liability portion of the premium that goes up, or are the collision, comprehensive, etc portions of the premium affected as well?

ETA: I'm located in Texas and I'm referring to at-fault accident in which the other vehicle sustained damage but mine did not. I have Allstate if that helps.

What’s the best insurance option for box trucks

    Posted: 03 Sep 2021 03:58 PM PDT

I want to get a small box truck (class 3 or 4) so I can move stuff to some properties that I own. I own two rentals and it'd be nice to have one for home improvement purposes. I'd only be using it a few times a month. But everywhere I call, they tell me they don't do personal insurance on box truck. I didnt think home improvement is considered commercial if it's your personal home. But every local insurance agency near me has said I need a commercial plan or never got back to me with a quote.

I live in Michigan and insurance is already through the roof, so if there's not a way to get personal insurance on a box truck, then I'd just go a different route

Deep scratch made by another driver, do I NEED to take it to a shop?

    Posted: 03 Sep 2021 03:57 PM PDT

A person left a deep scratch on my bumper while it was parked and left their insurance number(GEICO). I filed a claim and uploaded photos to get an estimate. I would rather get the check instead of actually getting it fixed at the shop since I could use that money.

Is there a way I can avoid getting low balled? like also going to a different shop to getting estimate so that I could negotiate a better price?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

Should I pursue this claim further? Downed cable line from someone's house pulled off my car's fender.

    Posted: 03 Sep 2021 11:48 AM PDT

A couple weeks ago I was driving down the street and I started to hear this noise and I turned around and there was a wire attached to my car with the other end connected to the telephone pole. I pulled over and the wire was wrapped around the axle of my car and had pulled off part of my fender. I called the fire department and had them deal with the wire since I wasn't sure if it was hot. It wasn't. It was most likely just an old telephone or cable line. We did some detective work and figured out whose house it was from. I knocked on the door and spoke to the woman and she agreed that it was from her house and that she noticed it went down a couple hours before and she called the city to report it. It looked like the tree from her house was making the wire sag and that might have helped it be pulled down if there was a gust of wind. Anyway, I got her contact information and insurance company info and called and made a claim. The insurance person at their company got in contact with me and said that after an investigation he concluded that they would not be paying to repair for my car and that there customer was not up fault. my question is should I continue pursuing this and if so how? I never reported it to my car insurance because I don't have full coverage and so I would have to pay out of pocket anyway. But is this something I should report to my car insurance and have them pursue the home insurance company?

    Flood insurance

    Posted: 03 Sep 2021 11:46 AM PDT

Questions about how to buy flood insurance, Oregon, USA, thank you in advance for any help!

We are closing on a new house this month. FEMA flood insurance rates were quoted at $3200/year! I think we have lots of mitigating factors that would lower our rates, and I'm wondering what the best way to do that is.

    House info:

The lot is about 60% in an AE flood zone, near a small river/creek, through the house is probably only 20% in the zone.

At some point the house was lifted, it now has an unfinished cement basement that is probably 6 ft tall. (It seemed unlikely the house would ever flood, idk how of could ever reach the first floor now.)

The house was built in 1924.

The furnace and tankless hot water system are in the basement.

    Questions:

Should we check into private insurance? Will they send someone to actually evaluate the property? Who offered private flood insurance?

I'm seeing if there is a flood zone elevation certificate on file, if there is not is it worth having a surveyor out to get one?

I read something about old houses getting discounts for being grandfathered in, is that true?

Is there anything else I should be doing to decrease my rates?

    Thank you!

    Hurricane IDA (NYC) - Geico

    Posted: 03 Sep 2021 03:09 PM PDT

Hi, I'm from NYC and recently Hurricane Ida passed through. Things looked perfectly normal the next day, but when I got to my car, I noticed there was about an inch of water that got into my car. I dried the mats but I noticed that the car doesn't respond when I click to lock/unlock from my car key (or it does occassionally). In addition, my tire light sensor had turned on and I checked my tires and filled up one of them which was only about 6 PSI lower than the normal levels. However, the light is still on. I'm not sure if it is safe to go on highways, because I'm assuming the water got into the engine area. I was wondering if Geico covers damage to car from rain and what the procedure would be, as I never submitted a claim before. Thanks!

    Auto Insurance Claim

    Posted: 03 Sep 2021 03:05 PM PDT

I haven't found a reliable answer on this issue so I'm asking here.

Someone rear ended my vehicle last week and I've finally got in touch with the adjuster and set a time to drop off at the collision center. The adjuster told me that they are assuming full responsibility for the damages. He also sent me a link to preschedule a rental car.

Here's the issue: I currently drive a 2016 Honda Civic EX-L sedan. I'm 6'0" 260lbs and the car is just roomy enough for me to be comfortable. While I was filling out the preschedule link for enterprise, it says I'm only authorized for $25.** a day, which would be a Chevy Spark or something similar. This price also doesn't include collision/liability protection. I had heard at one point in time that insurance is required to put you in a vehicle that is comparable to your own, is this still true? Also, should they be covering collision protection for the rental.

Please let me know your advice. P.S. The insurance adjuster has been a total paid to get in touch with this far. Should I see if enterprise can assist with a solution? I shouldn't have to pay a dime in overage since I didn't choose to get hit by their customer.

    Edit: DFW, TX

Rant/request for advice on negligent billing specialist

    Posted: 03 Sep 2021 02:22 PM PDT

Hello r/insurance, I'm dealing with a very frustrating situation and thought I'd come here for advice/to rant. I am trying to get insurance approval for double jaw surgery for sleep apnea. I began this process in May and it is now September. I have been denied twice, but each time I am adding more documentation and I believe it will be approved eventually.

However, my biggest obstacle is dealing with my surgeon's billing specialist. I feel like what should be a very simple process has become extremely tedious and frustrating. I basically have to monitor whether she has submitted my documents, otherwise she will forget. My first request for prior authorization took a month just to get in system. Insurance itself took less than a week to decide an outcome. Even the OR coordinator of the surgeon has told me to call frequently, as she (the billing specialist) tends to submit things late. Finally, to make things worse, she has very inconsistent office hours. It's basically random whether or not she will pick up the phone on any given day of the week.

Well, today I found out that my appeal (which took another month to submit) was denied because the wrong procedure code was submitted. She submitted a code for genioplasty, which is a cosmetic procedure, and not the codes for double jaw surgery. Each appeal takes at minimum two weeks to get processed, which in terms of surgery date reservations are months. I was really hoping to get the surgery this year (my initial goal was this summer), but at this rate I'm looking at next summer. I even took a break from college to get this sorted out, so this is really frustrating to deal with. Any tips on how to deal with this? There is no one I can really complain to at the hospital, and it seems she just goes unchecked as the OR coordinator is already aware. Thanks!

Not at fault accident but forgot to pay mine this month

    US, Georgia Atlanta area

I stupidly missed my insurance monthly payment and believe I am no longer insured.

I was rearended while waiting to turn left onto a highway. Was at dead stop.

The other driver knew he was at fault and gave me his insurance information but I forgot to get his number and there was no police.

Do I try to get his information or file a claim with his insurance?

US-CA Will my insurance rent my AirBnB?

    Posted: 03 Sep 2021 12:41 PM PDT

I had a leak in my kitchen that affected two adjacent rooms one being my master. With the risk of asbestos (house built in the 50's) and the size of the affected area this might end up being a move out situation. Before the pandemic started I had a mother in law suite that was listed on AirBnB. I haven't had it listed recently for various reasons but did plan to list it again. I am wondering if my insurance would rent that space from me to place me in it or if they would tell me that since I own it they wouldn't pay. It is currently being used as an office by my wife and I so living there would actually be a bit of a disruption for us but less of a disruption than staying in a hotel room. What I mean by that is we would need to moving furniture and modify the way we use the space so it's not like we're just moving into a spare room. Thanks for any advice anyone has!

Realized I forgot to add this, I had planned on re-listing because the vaccine rate in CA had gotten to a level I was more comfortable with and I get mostly in state people for business trips.

Edit: Just in case US-CA is confusing it's California not Canada, Sacramento specifically if it matters

    Working for Elephant Insurance?

    Posted: 03 Sep 2021 12:40 PM PDT

So the last week I have really gave some heavy thought into entering the Insurance Industry and starting a career in Claims. I have no previous Insurance experience but I years of Sales, Customer Service, and Collections experience and a Bachelor's degree in Marketing.

I've applied to many Trainee jobs, with Travelers selecting me to do an assessment, and Elephant Insurance interested in doing a "recorded" interview where I suppose I record myself answering the questions. Kind of different, but I'll take it, given its for a remote position.

Does anyone know what its like to work for Elephant? How much do trainees get paid, etc? Also do they actually hire all of the trainees? I get paid very well at my current job, and if they don't hire al trainees, would be very risky...

I did some research and based on what I see, it is very affordable auto insurance and very customer oriented. I suppose since it is a remote position, that explains the interview process. I Just really want to put my foot in the door, and unsure if this is a good company to start with

I lost my car in the hurricane (completely ruined). I do pay for comprehensive insurance, which I think covers flood damage, but I moved to a different unit in the same apartment complex and forgot to tell my insurance company.

Am I just totally out of luck here? Should I update my address in their system now, a few days after the fact? I've already filled the claim, haven't heard anything back from them yet.

    Insurance Adjuster

    Posted: 03 Sep 2021 03:34 PM PDT

I've had a claim for a while now on roof damage. During this time State Farm has been asking us to get a roofer to provide photos and that in itself was a challenge. At no point in time did they send an insurance adjuster. I feel like they did this on purpose because because they knew I was struggling getting roofing company to support us. Also how can insurance be certain of what kind of damage would've occurred on a given day? They are claiming the damage that another roofing company happened at a later time. So they are asking for 2 claims meaning 2 deductibles. But insurance would have no idea because they never sent an insurance adjuster to inspect.
