Legal Advice I think my neighbor's roommate murdered her, What do I do?

I think my neighbor's roommate murdered her, What do I do?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2021 09:23 AM PDT

Hey Reddit, to add on to this crazy month I've been having; I think my neighbor could be in danger or worse, murdered. BUT maybe I'm wrong, need advice on what to do.

For reference I'm in Texas. Live in a quiet suburb. And had a really weird interaction with my neighbor's roommate. It's an older man and older woman. Tbh we all thought they were in a relationship but she dropped the bombshell on us that they were just roommates earlier this year.

Anyways, I haven't seen the neighbor woman in a couple days. She usually is always on the porch smoking and talking to passerby's. And suddenly this morning the neighbor man comes up to my fiance's car, (kinda stumbling so idk what was going on there), and begging to do our lawn for us so he can make some money. Apparently money was tight and the neighbor woman had "left to live with her daughter across the country", so he was left to fend for himself.

This doesn't make sense for a couple reasons, one the neighbor woman and her daughter had a terrible relationship. She always would make a point to bring it up in conversations, "Oh I love having young people around, it reminds me of my kids. But they don't talk to me anymore". Maybe they fixed their relationship but a permanent move after only a couple months that they would have been trying to fix it seems really odd.

Two, the neighbor woman told me multiple times that she would never leave this town. She'd been here almost two decades and loved everything about it.

Three, and this is the smoking gun for me, for the last month, neighbor woman has been trying to evict neighbor man. Calling the police multiple times in the middle of the night. I know this because she would always come up to us the next day and apologize if she had a lot of noise at her house last night and that she had to call the cops to try and kick her roommate out. No, I don't know why he's still there. Maybe he has partial or full ownership of the house. That's beyond my scope of knowledge here.

They've seemed to be having this falling out for a while. Some days I saw neighbor man pacing around outside on the phone talking to who knows about how he has no family and he's fucked, etc. Basically, its not stable over there for one reason or another.

We have the neighbor woman's phone number, so I think we are going to try and call her later today. But in the event she doesn't pick up, I need to know what to do. This just all seems really off, but a wellness check doesn't seem like it would fix anything since he claims she moved across the country. Would the police maybe try checking in with the daughter? Unfortunately don't have her info but I'm sure they could dig it up.

And just before anyone trolls or asks why I'm so invested. This is my direct neighbor, right next door. I don't care what they do with their lives but the fact he is bothering us to beg for money and telling us neighbor woman left the house to him when we know damn well he was about to get kicked out of that house is just plain weird. I just want to make sure she is okay.

Edit : Just tried calling and the number has been disconnected. I'm actually shaking y'all what the hell is going on here. I guess maybe she changed her number when she moved but this is just getting too crazy for me. Hopefully it's all a misunderstanding.

Ex forged my signature on two loans

    Posted: 12 Sep 2021 06:30 AM PDT

My ex boyfriend forged my signature on two separate loans. One at the car lot he worked at for a truck that got repoed, another at a bank where he had co signer papers sent to his second email and e-signed as me. Both of these times I was not present. I've been left with all the debt from these. Can anyone assist on steps I can take? Edited to add :: these loans were opened about 2016/2017.

I have to leave for work but my town is having a race and festival that has blocked off every single road out of my subdivision.

    Posted: 11 Sep 2021 05:17 PM PDT

The officer is telling me I'm not allowed to leave until after 10pm and it doesn't matter if I have to work or not because apparently they've sent notifications all week. I told him I didn't get any notifications and he just says "well I'm giving you one right now so don't think about leaving again" l'll get fired from my job if I don't go in... What can I do? I'm in Huntley Illinois

Edit- So after deciding to drive around before the runners got right up to me , I went to 6 different barricades and finally found a supervisor who let me out!

For some further clarification- I couldn't take an Uber even if I actually wanted to because I Don't have a $100 to spare and also have arthritis AND am recovering from surgery. If those were options i damn well would have taken them. The reason I can't take an Uber anyways is because I do delivery for a living so driving is how I make my money.. I, as well as some neighbors were all having major problems with this and eventually me and about 3 other cars teamed up and after pestering multiple different police officers they finally caved and let us out. We were told to "get used to it because this is how we handle events like this".

[NJ] Amazon says I returned the wrong item and is threatening to charge me for it

    Posted: 12 Sep 2021 06:24 AM PDT

In June I brought a rather expensive drone for myself. It was just a little over $1000. When I received it, I noticed that it was missing one of the cables that was required to use the drone. I immediately requested a replacement on Amazon and returned the one with the missing cable. I returned it to a UPS store as advised on the Amazon return instructions. A few days later I received notice that the return was received and never heard anything of the issue again.

Fast forward two and a half months later and I receive an e-mail from Amazon that states that I returned the incorrect item and that I'll be charged if I don't return the right item. I know for a fact that I returned the right item, so I e-mailed back simply stating that I returned the correct item and asked them to provide proof that I returned the incorrect item.

I received another canned response back simply stating that I returned an incorrect item. I replied to the canned response with the same response, only this time I also cc'ed jeff@amazon.com which from my understanding forwards to some special inbox that gets more attention.

I called amazon customer support to get more information. Support told me that they could not give me more information and that all they could tell me is that they received the wrong item. They did take a report though where I explained again that I returned the item and the customer service rep stated that a special team was handling the case and that I wouldn't receive any more emails on the subject and that I wouldn't be charged. I wished I had recorded that phone call.

Later that day I receive another email from amazon, this time I think it's a reply to the email I cc'ed to jeff@amazon.com email, essentially stating the same thing that Amazon support had been stating. I asked them again to provide proof that I returned the wrong item and I asked that they return the incorrect item back to me if they cannot provide proof for whatever reason. I also pointed out that the Amazon website lists the return as completed and even lists that date (2 months ago) that the return was received by amazon on.

Again they responded similarly to their previous e-mails, stating that I returned the wrong item and that they were going to charge me for it. They said they could not provide proof and could not send the incorrect item back to me. They also said that they could not send me proof because they discarded the incorrect item that they claimed I sent them.

I called support back to get an explanation on the last e-mail I had just received and was again told the same thing as the first call, that a team would be back in contact with me within 24-48 hours via email and that I wouldn't be charged or should receive anymore e-mails requesting that I send the item back. Due to how inconsistent amazon has been up to this point, I started recording all of my calls. I also saved all of the emails I have up until now. I also took screen shots of the return order page that still shows the return as completed and received by amazon on June 24th.

I'm really at a loss for what to do here. I don't have the return shipping receipt anymore since it was so long ago and I received confirmation that they received the item. When I returned the item, amazon allows you to return the item in it's regular product box without a cardboard shipping box to a UPS store. I suspect that between the UPS store and the Amazon warehouse that someone stole or replaced the drone. However since Amazon won't give me ANY information, I have no way to confirm that.

It seems that every response I get back from Amazon on any of my requests for information is met with a "fuck you, pay me." from amazon. I assume they're going to charge my card for the $1000 soon. It's an Amazon Store credit card by Synchrony bank, so I have no clue how a credit dispute would work out in this case. If they charge me, would it even be worth brining a company like Amazon to small claims court? It feels like a VERY uphill battle in a case of he said, she said.

How to stop being caregiver for adult dependent, legal guardian won’t reply

    Posted: 12 Sep 2021 07:02 AM PDT

My post history has a further explanation but basically my partner is the caregiver for his mom. She is dangerous to herself and to others and she needs 24/7 care. She has a state appointed legal guardian and her daughter is the financial dpoa

After recent events, it became clear (witnesses agree) my partner is not able to care for his mom anymore and she needs to be put in a home for her own safety and for his. She needs constant supervision, which he can't provide working full time.

We have contacted the LG multiple times with no reply and the sister who has dpoa refuses to listen or assist. My partner can't make any choices in his moms care legally. She just lives with him. We have contacted so many people. Two hospital ERs to get her in geriatric psych while a permanent placement is looked for. I've talked to two social workers. Everything has the same response which is they can't do anything without the Legal guardian approving but we can't get a hold of him!

Someone on a caregiver thread suggested we just drop the mom off with the sister and leave (this sounds bad, I know but this situation is extremely complicated and the sister has made my partners life a living hell over this- she may even be committing abuse of her dpoa powers) but we were told that could count as elder abuse, even though the sister and her house are far more equipped for this Someone else told us even bringing her to the ER would be elder abandonment- even though she NEEDS inpatient psych help (but they'll only take her if she's basically actively committing suicide) It's a matter of time before she kills herself (threatens it daily, draws art daily of her doing it) hurts my partner, or ends up kidnapped (she runs away and sneaks off with stranger, despite hardly having enough working memory on how to get home) There's a lot more to it but she needs to go before we find her dead in a ditch

We did send a consult request to w lawyer, and plan on calling probate court first thing Monday to try and figure out the LG situation

But I guess my question in the meantime is does he have any legal responsibility long term to his mom ? Why is it the LG, and dpoa can be all but invisible (they don't even live in this state/city) but my partner who is basically just a babysitter apparently has to keep her? To clarify , he's told both of them multiple times he no longer consents to this and she needs to be placed elsewhere. I'm just trying to understand the legality of this all. If we don't take action ourselves, the sister says she will refuse to use the moms money on getting the mom help and is basically forcing my partner to keep caring for her (while also telling my partner to use his own small income instead of the mom's disability money on the moms basic needs)

Could we call APS? The way aps words their website, it kinda seems like he can only report "abuse" to the dependent but she's not being abused so could they be of any help?

Ex husband died without a will. I'm still the beneficiary on his life insurance (California)

    Posted: 12 Sep 2021 09:14 AM PDT

I'm in California. We've been divorced less than a year. We have a minor child. My understanding is the divorce won't impact my eligibility to receive the payout and that it will skip probate. Is that right?

His family is having a very tough time with him passing and they will be furious when they find out. The grandparents are making noises about trying to get guardianship (I'm not worried about that, they are active alcoholics and I'm a completely fit parent.) How much of an issue could they make about the life insurance?

And I just want to urge anyone with kids to make a will. Otherwise your kid might get a firehose full of money turned on them at 18 and you won't be there up help them handle it.

[UT] Tried renewing my passport. Got a letter back that says I can't renew because I owe child support. I don't have a child.

    Posted: 11 Sep 2021 03:19 PM PDT

I don't have a kid. I've never had sex with anyone except my wife to whom I am still married.

I also just got a security clearance which I'm pretty sure would be denied if I owed child support.

The letter states that they don't have any info concerning the child support obligation, so where do I go? Do I dispute it with the passport agency first?

I'm really at a complete loss here.

    Edit:

Happened to check my credit report yesterday and nothing was amiss. Has only my cards, no public records or anything else.

Being summoned as a witness in a court case, between the person who assaulted me, and my previous employer who threw me under a bus. Law firm is demanding I appear in person, i don't want anything to do with this.

    Posted: 11 Sep 2021 09:44 PM PDT

About a week ago i received a summons to appear in court as a witness to an incident where i was assaulted by a customer. The law suit seems to be between my previous employer and the person who assaulted me.

In may 2020 I was working as a greeter at a retail store in TX, i told someone they were required to put a mask on, person refused, I asked them to leave, the person slapped/pushed me, and had a meltdown. I never touched the customer, and immediately retreated. A customer called police. I never went to the ER or anything. Woman was arrested, I gave my statement to the cops. Never heard anything about it from the police again.

My employer was really pissed off and a week later I was sacked for failing to follow procedures in handling this customer after review. I don't know what procedures, but I was pissed off. But I was already planning to give notice so I just made a vow to never shop there again.

    Anyways my problems:

    • I am supposed to appear in a few weeks in a court in Texas, I live in NY. We are living on a shoe string budget.
    • This law firm who sent the summons spent a week ignoring me. I left messages, sent emails, etc. Someone finally called me back on Friday evening stating that I am required to be in person, and they will not reimburse me for any costs associated with going. That is not their problem.
    • The lawyer said I am required by law to appear for their summons. (is this true?)
    • They won't even explain what i am needed for in this case.
    • I don't care about this at all. These 2 idiots can sue each other.

    Can anyone tell me:

    1. Am i required to appear as a witness for a frivolous lawsuit between the person who assaulted me and my employer who threw me under the bus.
    2. If i am can i ask the judge or who ever to allow me to give my statement via zoom?

Legally married but having a baby with another man. Questions about birth certificate.

    Posted: 12 Sep 2021 09:36 AM PDT

As the title states, I am currently married and have been separated for almost a year. I am currently 13 weeks pregnant. I have read that the man I'm married to will automatically be put on the birth certificate as the father. Of course, he is not the father. How do I go about making sure the biological father is the one put on the birth certificate?

There is a lot of information on the internet, and it is a bit confusing. So if someone could tell me what I need to do and ELI5; I would greatly appreciate it.

    Edit: South Carolina

Edit 2: I believe I understand that I am going to have to wait until after the child is born and may still end up having my ex's name as the father for a short period of time until I can have it modified. This leads me to my next question, I am free to go ahead and put the biological father's last name on my child at the hospital?

    Peanut Butter Cookies

    Posted: 12 Sep 2021 07:17 AM PDT

This post is more or less to show my manager...

I work at a hotel and we give away free cookies... Occasionally, peanut butter cookies will be thrown into the mix. My manager doesn't believe we need to have a warning because, well in her words, "People should know peanut butter cookies contain peanuts."

However, we don't even have a warning that the cookies are peanut butter, and just looking at them they would come across as sugar cookies.

I have made a warning notice to put out whenever we have peanut butter cookies, however my manager and colleges believe that it is pointless and the only time the warning notice is ever posted is when I am working.

I guess what I am looking for is a sense of legal confirmation that if we continue failing to warn guests that some of our cookies do contain peanut butter then would we be liable if anyone has an allergic reaction.

I'm sure just telling them would count as a warning, but there are times I've worked with colleges where they do not even verbally warn guests that the cookies contain peanut butter.

TL ; DR - My job offers peanut butter cookies to guest without any form of warning. What is the liability?

My ex husband is being taken off the ventilator on Monday. Probate question, Wisconsin.

    Posted: 11 Sep 2021 04:30 PM PDT

I lost my daughter 5 years ago. So my 23 year old son is essentially an only child. My ex husband got covid, and is not going to make it. He's being taken off the vent on Monday. Our son is devastated.

Ex doesn't have a will, and we are unsure what our next step is to make sure our son is OK.

    The ex's family are vultures

Son has a decent job.... But never moved out of his father's house due to other health issues.

I can help son maintain the property for a short period of time.

How does probate work? How do I help my son?

Got name and address of hit and run, what do I do with this info?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2021 12:03 PM PDT

Visiting an orchard (IL, Chicago area) and someone backed into our car, scraping up my bumper a bit but no dents or cracks. Person drove off to escape, but employee there saw this happen. Didn't get a plate, but the lady had just made a purchase and they provided me a first and last name.

Wondering what exactly to do with this info. The damage is superficial, but noticeable. Do I just report to my insurance and provide the name that was given? Do I need to file a police report for something like this? Would reporting this impact my insurance rates in any way? Is there some legal way to get their insurance info with their name?

Since I have a name and was able to look up the culprits address, I am tempted to contact her myself but figure this would be a bad idea that wouldn't help anything.

    Filial Laws MS/LA/TX

    Posted: 12 Sep 2021 12:14 PM PDT

I have been reading up on filial laws by state, and have some concerns about being forced to take care of my bio mother. My bio mother is on my birth certificate, but I have not spoken to her in over a decade. (There is a history of abuse and neglect.)

My bio mother is financially unstable (has always couch surfed and leeched). I live in MS. Bio mom floats between TX and LA. Some of those filial laws (in LA, for example) go so far as to state a needy parent can sue for alimony from their child if the child has the means to provide for the parent.

My husband and I both work and have created a stable living for our own family. The thought of her getting anything from me is extremely frightening and I just need to know if that's something I need to prepare to guard against in the future.

So I guess what I'm asking is....are those filial laws actually enforced? And would it be possible for my bio mother to have any claim to me or my earnings? Does the fact that we are currently in different states (and hopefully will always be) matter?

Options to be taken off a ex's car loan.

    Posted: 12 Sep 2021 09:03 AM PDT

I live in Ohio. So my ex and I were together for 6 years and mutually split a month ago. In 2019 I signed as a cosigner on his car loan. Although I'm not particularly worried that he won't continue to pay for his car I really don't want to be on the loan anymore. He's a good person but he is dragging his feet to refinance the car so my name is off the loan. I looked into a cosigner release, but this loan company doesn't do that. Does anyone know what other options, even legally that I can pursue?

    First time DUI

    Posted: 12 Sep 2021 01:41 PM PDT

So I was convicted with a DUI last night and reckless driving. I did have a few drinks hours before I drove home, and I had a meal and water in between as well. What triggered the cops was that I accidentally drove on the lane line for a moment on my home. At that time every other lane except one was closed off along with multiple exits for construction and I was changing the song that was playing (which was stupid I know). Because I failed the breathalyzer (11%) I was arrested and convicted. It was my first time, I have no prior convictions, felonies, or anything on record and I've been licensed for over 12 years now.

I understand that this is a serious conviction and I should have used better judgement. Before I see a lawyer, what options should I look for and consider? Is there anything I can do to not have this appear on my record? Any other advice or insight would be greatly appreciated as well.

I want to prevent my mom from making medical decisions for me (Delaware)

    Posted: 12 Sep 2021 01:06 PM PDT

I'm in my early 20s and I'm not married. If I understand correctly, should I be unconscious in the hospital my parents would make medical decisions for me. My mom is anti-vax, anti-doctors, and an absolute Karen. I don't want her to decide what the doctors can/can't do.

I watched her interfere with my younger brother's medical care while he was hospitalized as a teenager. She requested odd treatments she found online, did her own "research", refused doctor recommendations for medicines, etc. He almost died. CPS was briefly involved over her refusal to fill his prescriptions.

I'm also worried that my dad will just go with what my mom says if he is making decisions. My only other relative nearby is my Uncle, but I'm worried he won't want to be involved in the situation

Is there anything I can do? I've seen healthcare directives, but how would a hospital know I have one? What can I say to prevent me from being treated with horse dewormer or other nonsense?

Will my partner be able to enter Canada with a previous conviction of cannabis use?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2021 10:52 AM PDT

I hope it's okay to ask about Canadian immigration/border control questions here. Apologies, on mobile.

I will be applying for a study permit soon and want to include my partner in my application so he can come with me. We aren't married, but we can get married or apply under common-law partner.

My partner was convicted of cannabis consumption in the UAE (he's an expat). All they found on him was a paper with "cannabis contamination". They conducted a urine test and he tested positive. As per the law, he was fined and deported.

I understand that this may be a hurdle, even though cannabis consumption is legal in Canada. What are the chances of an immigration officer rejecting the application due to this? The Canadian law states that its okay to have upto 30 grams, but my partner had nothing (just the "contaminated paper" which was used to mix tobacco and cannabis).

From what I've gathered, we will need to submit a legal opinion letter stating that he's good to enter the country. And we may also need to carry court documents to show evidence at the border. Is that correct information? From where can I get a legal opinion letter and is it expensive? (I'm not in Canada currently)

All advise is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

More details: He did not buy it from anyone (illegal in Canada as buying from an unauthorized seller). His friend rolls his own tobacco and gifted him a rolled cigarette(it's legal to gift cannabis in Canada). My partner did not know it contained cannabis (he has not knowingly broken rules in a country he immigrated to).

Possible to get half of rent money back? Breaking lease early under landlord tenant laws

    Posted: 12 Sep 2021 11:37 AM PDT

Hi I am posting this for a friend who doesn't have Reddit.

Context: she lives in Phoenix, Arizona which falls under the Arizona Residential Landlord Tenant Act (ARLTA). She moved in to the apartment complex the beginning of June 2021 and signed a 12 months lease.

When she first moved into the apartment there were many roach carcasses and also many live roaches. She immediately put in a maintenance request for her apartment to be sprayed. A few days later while she was at work they said it was completed. She saw no chance with the roaches. In fact it seemed their numbers were growing. She contacted them again the first week of July only to hear from the building manager that maintenance actually can't come spray her apartment because they gave her the ONLY set of keys when she moved in. So they never sprayed in june when they said they did. She had been spot treating with raid and trying to kill specific bugs when she saw them, under the impression that they were doing pest control.

Come September they claim they can finally spray but it is a full on infestation at this point. She has been having lung issues due to the condition of the apartment. She saw a doctor and got a note stating that the effects of the roaches are negatively impacting her health. Under the ARLTA, she has the right to terminate her lease in 5 days with no repercussions with providence of a written notice and a doctors note. She did this. Her lease officially ends September 16.

The manager however is saying it is her fault for spot treating and that they could have fixed the issue if she wasn't doing that? And that they will let her break the lease but not because of ARLTA. To me it sounds like they are trying to avoid liability and have the chance to come after her in court for money later, which ARLTA prohibits. She has documented all of her contact with management and maintenance and has photographs of the extent of the infestation plus the doctors note. She sent a very clear succinct letter that detailed which sections of ARLTA she is enacting to end her lease. I believe she is covered legally but I am no lawyer.

Since she is moving out halfway through the month of September she would like half of her September's rent back. Is this possible? How could she go about doing so?

Foundation problems after clean bill of health and inspection

    Posted: 12 Sep 2021 01:38 PM PDT

I've own my home in Georgia for a little over a year now and have noticed door frames and other stuff begin to shift.

Had a foundation expert come in and do an estimate to stop the entire house from shifting and eventually falling in on itself. $25k just to arrest the problem.

He says there was clearly work down to patch foundation damage and that the inspector should have let me know major work would eventually need to be done. I got a clean bill of health from the home inspector before sale of the house.

I feel I was sold an absolute lemon. The foundation expert said I was. The realtor said everything was in excellent shape.

    What can I do?

(CT) A person in front of my friend at an ATM sped off and left their money, my friend took the money and tried to chase them down but lost them. If they return the money to the bank a couple days later do they risk legal trouble?

This is actually about a friend, not me.

They've had the money for a couple days now and I think they were debating keeping it. I informed them of how illegal it is and the fact that they were on camera.

They want to return it but are now nervous it'll still be an issue since it's been a few days.

What should they do? (It was $320)

(They now are well aware they should've just left it, and they know it sounds like BS that they were trying to give it to the person)

Co-parent is saying keeping documents from her is illegal

So I'm currently in the middle of a custody case. I have an attorney and everything but hes currently ooto, as it's Sunday. Is it illegal to not give my sons mother my sons original paperwork? I've already gave her copies that go in a folder that travels with him between houses. But since serving her, so that I can get in writing what our schedule is so that she can't just get pissed off and take him away, she refuses to let me see him and keeps threatening me with random bs.
