Just Discovered That My Competitor's Payroll is 8x Bigger Than Mine

    Posted: 06 Sep 2021 06:27 AM PDT

    As short as possible:

It took me 5 years to payoff about 1 million in debt after buying into a dead business. The business is thriving now after I destroyed my life to bring it roaring back. Its never seen revenue like there is now. Never.

Now due to PPP funding, I know what our competitor spends on payroll. All funds are public so after some digging I found their corporate name and found out that their payroll is 8x mine. It's insane. I also know that they pay their employees under the table so even this number is lower than what they actually spend.

I always knew this guy was a lot bigger than me. It's obvious because they have locations all throughout multiple states. The issue is I thought I closed the gap considerably. In reality, all it seems is that I maybe am beating them in sales in one location only. Maybe two, at best.

That is incredibly deflating. I know I shouldn't be gauging a business that has been around for at least 40 years compared to mine that is now turning 6... but as a true competitor, it's like finishing a mile run only to discover I signed up for the NYC Marathon.

Fuck I got a long road ahead of me.

PS: Would any of you guys report this competitor for their underreported wages? My CPA always says to mind my own business when it comes to the IRS but my understanding is they reward you for reporting others.

Painting/drywall contractor. I just had my worst week in 3 years and it keeps getting worse

    Posted: 06 Sep 2021 04:11 PM PDT

For some reason for the past couple of weeks, every single place I advertise online has been FLOODED with posts from popup contractors and day laborers. Started a couple of months ago. A lot of these groups and hosts allow unlicensed painters. I haven't been able to reach or talk to a single new customer in two weeks and i just went through my whole week with no work.

repeat customers and referrals only makes up about a quarter of my workload. I'm really not sure what to do at this point. I may just be forced to close down and take a huge pay cut and start working for someone else.

Is anyone else running into this situation? What are you guys doing to compete? I was doing okay for 3 years. I don't really have a whole lot of other skills to work on.

Is there any hope here to stay in business? To somehow compete with this barrage of new workers? Should I just walk away? take the huge pay cut and work for someone else? Or get out of the trades altogether and I don't know.. flip burgers or do deliveries or something?

I'm running out of ideas and having a hard time making ends meet this month. Any advice would be appreciated. thanks

How should I go about pitching my cleaning work to complexes and or high rises

    Posted: 06 Sep 2021 05:50 PM PDT

I've been in the cleaning industry for about a year.

I do all the cleaning myself.

I did such to build a reputation.

I have a decent rep now, such as, 30, five star review. I'm not here to boast about my grind.

I would really like to get on a contract with a apartment complex for move in/out cleanings.

I know that's how I'm gonna up my money.

But I just have no idea how to get that client.

I do just fine finding my residential customers, but I'm so lost on these bigger jobs with property management companies or solely owned complexes.

I know places that are under property management require you to be have a vendors license (which is basically an approval from a vending company)

The vending company does all the background work on you, checking you insurance blah blah they just make sure you are legit and not just some crook.

Anyways, even if I had the vending license, still I wouldn't know how tf to actually get these jobs.

    My thoughts are:

    1. Literally just walk in and ask
    2. Mail them a portfolio and offer
    3. Call them and chat

I haven't put much into those 3, but I just feel like maybe I'm not seeing the bigger picture?

Any knowledge on landing contracted jobs would be huge for me!

Sales and Use tax in CA

    Posted: 07 Sep 2021 12:17 AM PDT

    Hello smart folks!

i wanted to ask the smart people on reddit before i pay any taxes to CDTFA.

    Here is my following situation

    1) My seller's permit in California started from Aug/2020 - June/2021
    2) I left California in November/2020, but i had trouble cancelling my permit after i left due to technical issues with the site and i was in Asia
    3) My total sales from my ecommerce site between those two dates above were less than $2k (only $600 ish from customers in CA)
    4) the items i sold were all gifts that were brought over from Asia

am i still required to pay even if the items i sold were gifts i received while abroad?? i read on their site that gifts from abroad may not be subject to use tax but i may be completely wrong.

Credit Card Size – Size Matters Even In Payments

    Posted: 07 Sep 2021 03:37 AM PDT

All credit cards have a width of 3.37 inches (85.6 mm) and a height of 2.125 inches (53.98 mm). All credit cards have a common size as it is considerably more convenient for businesses to engage with them. If only the cards came in a variety of sizes, retailers and service providers would need heaps of card reading machines to ensure that each one could fit into a corresponding one.

Thankfully, organizations like the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) are there to create guidelines otherwise credit card issuers would have had to join together to simply agree on card sizes and this would have been a complex and pretty inconvenient procedure.

The ISO has 162 member countries, and ISO/IEC 7810#ID-1 sets the credit card dimensions rules that member countries must follow. Implying that not only are credit cards issued in the United States, but all around the world are of the same size.

How do you know if the risk to start up is worth it?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2021 08:02 PM PDT

I've been wanting to have my own business. I just don't know what or how it's going to go or how to do it.

Right now I'm looking into lawn mowing. I have 0 clients and 0 tools/machines and it's been a few years since I've mowed.

I've calculated that I need at least $4000 for tools. I don't know about insurance licensing contracting etc yet.

With the current numbers I've figured, I should be able to pay it all off in a season if I get about 40 yards a month, which is a lot.

I have the cash to do it but don't know how and if I should. I worry about competition. I also have a full time job. I wanted this to be a side gig.

    Austin Tx area.

Buying a business with underreported income & no employees

    Posted: 06 Sep 2021 10:32 PM PDT

My husband and I are looking at buying a restaurant which specialises in pickup/delivery. I'm the due diligence person, the contract reader, the techie, those kind of details. My husband has managed restaurants & retail businesses for 20 years.

As far as location, equipment, size, etc, this place is perfect. We're both very pleased with the situation as far as those things. The food is superb & the reviews are great.

If we were to start up an entirely new business this setup couldn't be more ideal.

However, the owner has only had his family working for him, and paying them via a "family trust", which amounts, as I take it, to paying them diddly squat for their time. But who knows? We went in on Monday evening to talk to him & observe the flow of business, and there were three family members working, plus two drivers and then the owner. (They basically stayed fairly busy the whole time too, except the owner.)

Monday is of course the slow night, and that it should be that busy is great. Needing employees to cover demand is perfectly fine. A lot of businesses locally deliberately shortstaff & I find that terribly short sighted as customers leave terrible reviews, they fail health inspections because employees don't have time to clean, etc.

Oh, wow. Yeah, I just double-checked the numbers he gave us & he's reporting about $1000 a month in wages. He did say they have two 15 yos on staff for busy days so I'm guessing family isn't included at all.

Over the last quarter, he also reports an income of about $14,000 a month or $3500 a week. I'm estimating our wages for employees alone will be $4-5000 a week.

But he flat out said he has a second set of books that include cash purchases. I haven't seen it yet.

He says he's turned a profit since he began(he bought it established as well.) With the setup he has & how busy they were, he'd be pretty slow not to be, as he bought it in cash(as will we) and has no debts, as well as the rent being quite reasonable for the area.

If you were looking at this, would you ditch it as a bad job?

Is it dumb to assume no numbers are reliable and that we'll need to estimate how deep we might need to go in the red before we can expect to establish a stable profit?

For what it's worth, the vibe we both got is that he was proud of what he'd done with the place & how profitable it was & while he definitely screwed with the numbers, he made a fairly clean breast of it with us. But who knows.

Edit: I should add that they didn't know we were coming by & we stayed for the entire shift. We got to talk to his family without him for a couple hours which was actually quite informative.

Step-mom put me off starting my own business now struggling to set up

    Posted: 06 Sep 2021 10:34 AM PDT

I have been preparing to start up my little side business that hopefully one day I can expand to a full time income. I have a cricut and plan to make some projects using that.

However when I told my parents about it, my stepmom was very quick to put a downer on my ideas. She said that SO many people have circuits and are doing these things that my business will never stand out and I won't make money from it.

This has really bummed me out and massively impacted on me actually starting up. How can I reinforce my positive motivation in order to start my business?

questions about leasing a space in receivership

    Posted: 06 Sep 2021 06:30 PM PDT

Hey folks, in looking for potential locations we found one in a strip mall type setting (a couple multi unit buildings) that is of interest. upon calling the broker I find out that it's in receivership. they were forthcoming in saying that we aren't likely to get tenant improvement credits of much value but also that literally everything else was negotiable and what we didn't get in credits we could ask for in rent. they suggested that we just have to pitch the judge....I'm still interested but haven't faced this before. what questions that I'm not thinking of should I think about asking? special terms you'd want? thinks to be wary of? I'm to be getting a maintenance-done and maintenance pending list. I'm not sure what else, if anything, I should think about for this location?

Ideas needed, help support a young small business.

    Posted: 06 Sep 2021 10:00 PM PDT

    Hi redditors,

Last week I decided to move forward with an idea I've been entertaining in my head. That was to start my own company. I went to the store and bought what I think I would need to clean houses. Over the weekend, I stayed up to put a website up on the internet quickly which is in the works by a developer I got in contact with. Today I went to a relatives house pro bono to test all the equipment and take notes on what works best.

My goal is to search, search, and search for a client this week to land a gig by Saturday or Sunday morning. Hopefully the website will be up so if something does spread by word of mouth about my business it'll have a good visual attached to my company by then.

The thing is that I don't have a good idea on what options to explore to get that weekend job. Any ideas to implement in my schedule this week???

    Thanks,

    --

TL:DR Bootstrapping in entrepreneurship but got stuck on how to get clients to inject initial momentum into business. I'm asking for efficient options. Help?

What is a good software stack to digitise my small tutoring business with appointment bookings and payments?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2021 04:55 PM PDT

Hey all! Myself and about 12-15 other tutors operate off WhatsApp groups and take Google Pay payments right now. As you can imagine, this is messy, and we would like to make it smoother.

If I want to set up a website where clients can browse the tutors, view their specific availability, and book virtual appointments, as well as pay a fee for the hour, what is recommended?

I am currently looking at Calendly, Acuity, and Setmore. However I can't seem to tell if I can provide individual calendar slots and links for each of the tutors.

    Any other suggestions? :)

    LLC’s and their benefits…

    Posted: 06 Sep 2021 08:30 PM PDT

I'm extremely new to this and would love a little advice and guidance. Just recently started flipping things and ended up doing better than I initially thought. With that being said, at what point would it be beneficial to start an llc? Once you start one, what benefits does it provide? I'm in Florida and it would only be me working "under" it.

Are there any perks you get from having an llc?

Is it easier to get health insurance? If I chose to start one, would it stop me from being able to be on my husbands employer sponsored health insurance?

    Thank you all!

Who can I hire for Brick and Mortar adding online

    Posted: 06 Sep 2021 03:44 PM PDT

Brick and Mortar Spice&Tea retail with aprox 1,000 SKUs. I have a Wix website that I manage. Currently I have my inventory posted as dressed up pdfs of spreadsheet lists. This is very helpful for my local customers who like to call or email their shopping lists. I am terrible at keeping the pricing updated due to the approx 1 hour data & design chore.

My big question for you all:

Who can I hire to setup the hundreds of items on my wix store? I'm curious about bare-bones options like item name&price integrated to auto-update with my Shopkeep POS, but also curious about a more robust option where someone adds pictures etc.

Looking for a software for business

    Posted: 06 Sep 2021 11:20 AM PDT

Hi! I'm trying to do some research online to find a software that's going to suit my needs but I'm still fairly new to this. I need something that can

-Keep track of --customer order progress --Warranty --contact info --our parts inventory --Employee hours worked --tasks that need completed

Until now we've been running everything off of excel but as we grow that becomes less viable an option and I'm hoping to find a software built for this sort of thing. Any help would be fantastically appreciated!

    Question Regards behavior at work

    Posted: 06 Sep 2021 09:04 AM PDT

    Hey,

I need some good advice and my question is out of topic. I am a very open guy when it comes to job friendships (I don't talk about relationships). I mean I can tell a lot of things about myself and I think it is easier to communicate and understand each other at the workplace because this is not just a job it's friendship too. But I realized that when I'm open and say too much then it gets back to me and I'm getting lots of conflicts at the job. What is the best approach in the workplace how do you deal with that? I know that lots of people are very reserve and don't say anything about themselves but this is not the best approach to show your amazing personality and to meet and know others. Please give me some good advice because I all the time meet so many snakes in the grass.

    Baffled by Google Maps presence

    Posted: 06 Sep 2021 07:52 AM PDT

I recently opened an Italian cafe & restaurant in a metropolitan area, and early on I took steps to claim my business via Google MyBusiness, establish the services that we offer, etc., and we have a phone number & website listed, hours posted, 14 legitimate reviews from our first month or so (and all 5 star, which I'm certainly not complaining about). On the Google Maps profile, I have us listed as "Italian restaurant" (primary category), "coffee shop", "cafe", "restaurant", "gelato shop", "ice cream shop", etc..
Despite this, however, I ONLY show up in Google Maps when "Italian restaurant" is searched — even tapping the automatic buttons at the top for "restaurant" and "coffee" don't show us at all. As you can imagine, this is worrisome, as people are a lot more likely to search for just "restaurant" than specifically "Italian restaurant", and I feel that it is negatively impacting our visibility.
Am I doing something wrong in how I'm listing these categories? Is there something that I am missing in terms of getting us (literally) on the map? Do I need to contact Google directly?

[Question] Wholesale B2B print to digital product: Is this the best solution?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2021 09:33 AM PDT

We sell wholesale B2B books. These businesses give the books to homeowners. Naturally, every customer wants an eBook version.

    Question:
Are there any possibilities regarding an eBook, when you're selling hundreds of copies of the same book to one business, and they in-turn give a copy to each of their customers?

    Our current solution:
We created a subscription-based multi-site. Customers get a subdomain, and custom website that contains the eBook content.

We thought of providing a download URL, which would provide a unique number of eBook licenses, but those books can be shared once downloaded.

We also tried to mirror some educational options (e.g. digital textbooks for a class). This seemed complicated as well.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
