Employer lied said they offered my job back, now I am being denied unemployment Posted: 24 Jun 2020 11:41 PM PDT In March I was furloughed at my job because of COVID 19 because they had to operate at 50% working capacity. In May they began bringing people back and I did not get a call to comeback. I tried calling my boss to see what was going on and he did not answer so I decided to walk in the store and talk to him face to face. I saw him and asked him if I would be coming back or not. He said that unfortunately I was being permanently laid off because of the slow business I told him I understand. Fast forward to last Sunday I try applying for my benefits and get an automatic denial claiming that my employer instructed me to come back to work. I already applied for an appeal on the unemployment website, but I have rent due in a week. What can I do in this scenario? Edit: Thank you all for the help. Since the initial post I have tried contacting my employer again to no success. There were two other employees that were still laid off and I asked them if they were offered there jobs bad and one of the guys said no and that he was under the impression that I was also let go. I am attempting to appeal the decision and am awaiting a reply from UI. Also I believe the business received over $50,000 from the CARES act for payroll protection but the only people who were laid off were non salary workers and the business is family owned so they brought in family members to work instead. It seems very suspicious what is going on. [link] [comments] |
Therapist and insurance company claimed in network but later found out not Posted: 25 Jun 2020 02:32 PM PDT Hi All, my therapist claimed that she is in network before I started the sessions mid of 2019. I also checked on my insurance company's website and called insurance company for verification if my therapist is in network. They all checked out she is in network at that time, so I signed up for the sessions to deal with depression. After 14 sessions, in around December 2019, my therapist told me she will be out of network in 2020 so I ended it. Surprise, surprise, I found out that the originally processed in network claims turned to out of network all of a sudden. My therapist also tried to claim sessions I cancelled (with an cancellation fee) and one session three months before my first session. I called the insurance company and they started investigation, turns out that my therapist is out of network since 2018. I confronted my therapist and she is still very sure that she is in network until 2020. I now have a claim of 2450 dollars of medical debt contrast of what I should only pay 10% of the in net work services. I started first level of appeal from the insurance company, and today I got the denial letter saying that according to their record, my therapist is out of network since 2018 so they cannot overturn their decision. I already offered them the evidence that the insurance company's website where my therapist is listed in network, my therapist email chain showing that both of them were identified as in network. Now I have three questions there: 1. How would I succeed in the second level appeal since I have provided the evidences to the insurance company? It seems like that the insurance company only okay with what they have found out. 2. I live in NJ but my plan is national plan, so the normal NJ law of appeal does not apply to them(according to the insurance person). How can I get hold of them doing higher levels appeals (external review etc.) 3. I don't have the reference number when I first called the insurance company to verify my therapist in and out of network plan. How can I obtain evidence of this? Thank you! [link] [comments] |

Should I take free grad school? Posted: 25 Jun 2020 07:49 AM PDT I currently work at a regional college in the Midwest. I make around $50,000 but I don't want to be in Higher Ed forever. I have the opportunity to take courses here for free, and I can earn an MBA in Business Analytics in 2 years. I was hesitant before because I'm not sure I want to be in this role for two more years, but with everything going on it seems likely I will. After the taxes I owe on the courses I will end up paying about $8,000 all in. Does this make sense as a longer term strategy to pivot away from Higher Ed? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Jun 2020 11:15 PM PDT I'm sure there is a good reason but I was thinking about how simple it is to finance a $1000 phone for $20/month (additional to my non-contract phone bill) but I can't get an auto loan for a car that costs about the same. I tend to imagine that the likelihood of defaulting on loan repayment is about the same for a phone bill or a cheap vehicle. I'm genuinely curious why I can get a $1000 phone with a $200 down payment and no credit check yet there is not a bank service that will provide a loan for an inexpensive car. And just for reference, my credit ranking at the time would be ranked as "needs work". [link] [comments] |
Car bill late a week - will it be repossessed? Posted: 25 Jun 2020 06:17 PM PDT So basically, due to unemployment being wonky, most of my money is on a state provided prepaid debit card. I have to pay for my monthly car loan out of checking account, which now has no income due to being laid off, and I transfer money from the unemployment card to my checking account, which takes 3-4 days. Long story short, my payment which was due on 6/23 got returned because though I transferred money to my checking account from the unemployment card, it was then taken out on 6/22 due to an overcharge from my gym (they charged me 5x the amount they should have, still trying to work that out.) The credit union website will now not allow me to make an online payment for my car, so I'm going to call them tomorrow, 6/26. And yeah, at this point my bill is 3 days late and they charged me a $25 return fee (which is fine). This is the first time I've paid my car bill late (or any credit bill really) but I've only had it since December. My account status now shows as "delinquent." What are the chances they try and repossess my car over this one late payment? Will it badly affect my credit? I'm just scared, never really dealt with auto loans - I'm 23 and owned all my other cars outright but this is my first new car. EDIT: thanks so much you guys, I think I was just freaking out. I have the funds available immediately but they're closed for the day so I'll call tomorrow and get them to set up the payment. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Jun 2020 03:52 PM PDT I've spent some time but I've worked hard to finally get a great paying job, a healthy emergency fund, an account on Ally bank that has 30% of my cash as emergency/saving for a big purchase (house) of immediate money, and the other 70% is in a 12 month CD ladder. I maxed out my 401k contributions and I max out my contributions to a Roth IRA on Vanguard. I feel set! But I still feel nervous that I could be doing more. I have some money in a stock portfolio put into 1-5 shares of giants like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and I play around with $1-$2k of penny stocks (my fun/learning stack that I don't mind losing, try growing). For slow growth, is it nicer to have a stock portfolio of just picking get/forget stocks like Amazon/Google? Or is it better off in index funds? Am I repeating myself with 401k and Roth IRA contributions and index funds? I think my childhood and constant thoughts about money has made me anxious about "not doing enough"... Authorized User and/or dispute Midland Credit debt collectors to boost credit scores? Posted: 25 Jun 2020 05:56 PM PDT I've seen some amazing posts on this fantastic sub and I'm hoping for a bit of advice. I'm working on becoming a first time home buyer in Illinois and am looking to boost my credit scores to get the best possible rates. My first pre-approval letter gave me a rate of 3.875% to borrow $225,000. Here's my credit score situation:
I have a debt collector (Midland Credit Management) who has slapped a $1,500 inquiry on TransUnion and Equifax. There's a note saying "40 Derogotry public records or collections filed". Details on the $1,500 inquiry from Midland:
These are the options I've been presented with from various people:
Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much in advance for helping me brainstorm. [link] [comments] |
Is driving a beat up car something people care about? Posted: 25 Jun 2020 06:44 PM PDT Hi, so the car I drive at the moment has a missing side panel. This is due to when I first drove it I accidentally tapped a pillar, and it dented the side, and then somebody pulled the door open a couple of months later and the panel totally fell off. I put the panel back on, thinking it was okay, and while driving it fell off and was run over. Thankfully the person who ran over it didn't damage their car or even realize for theta matter, but now I have a missing side panel, and the car looks bad from the side. I'm just trying to save at the moment, and know getting it repaired is not worth it, do people care much about this type of thing? [link] [comments] |
T-Mobile "Money" if you have T-Mobile Posted: 25 Jun 2020 02:13 PM PDT Hey guys, just thought I'd let you know that T-Mobile has had their own checking accounts for a while now, and with interest rates taking a dive, its something you might want to consider. You earn 4% apr on up to 3k and 1% on anything above it. The only requirement is to deposit 200 dollars or more a month. I have been using it for my e fund for about a year now (not as a checking) and have no complaints. Just a quick FYI, stay safe out there [link] [comments] |
Can someone explain why a fund like VXUS is a good investment? Posted: 25 Jun 2020 12:01 PM PDT I'm starting to buy index funds and have read about diversifying over US and international total market funds. I bought some shares of VTI today and I understand logically why that is a good investment. It's obviously up and down lately but if you look at a chart over the lifetime of the fund, it consistently goes up. I was thinking of VXUS for the international portion of my portfolio. From the research I've done, that seems like a decent one to invest in. However, I don't understand why. It's price over the lifetime of its existence has gone up and down and up and down, without any steady increase. It looks like it's been above the current stock price and below the current stock price equally often over the last decade. How do you make gains in a fund like that? Be gentle, I'm genuinely trying to learn! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Jun 2020 07:23 AM PDT Relative fell victim to SIM card scam. Husband is owner of cell phone account and sil is on same account. Thief showed up at T-Mobile store in Kentucky at 9pm pst, presented driver's license as account owners ID (according to phone rep), had sil's phone number ported out to another phone. Husband received text from T-Mobile saying call if SIM switch is not authorized. He did not read text until next morning. Sil did notice his phone said no service, but he was on wifi and thought he was in dead zone. Husband and sil both in San Diego. When husband saw text following morning, contacted T-Mobile and realized scam had occurred. Meanwhile soon after SIM switch, unbeknown to sil, thief hacked his email, thief intercepted password change phone text verification code, hacked into sil's yahoo email account and stole $1200 from his cryto account. Sil will file police report. My question is will he be made whole by crypto company or T-Mobile? [link] [comments] |
Should I put extra money towards mortgage? Posted: 25 Jun 2020 04:28 PM PDT Currently have about $5,000 extra that could be put towards the principal on the mortgage or kept in savings for added emergency fund/future trip/wishlist purchases, etc. I've calculated that this would save about $1,600 in interest over the loan so essentially around a 32% return on the money, but it would be over the course of 10 more years. I'm trying to decide if giving up $5,000 now would be worth the $1,600 over the long term. What would you do? Should I keep it in savings to have more money on hand or is it more worth it to put towards the mortgage? Just want to add that the mortgage is low interest and the emergency fund is already sizable - this is just extra. [link] [comments] |

How much cash to have left over after buying a home? Posted: 25 Jun 2020 06:39 PM PDT First time homebuyer. Single. No debt. Maxing out my 401k and HSA and putting everything else in savings. I have a reliable vehicle I don't intend to replace for 7-10 years. My target home value is 24% of my take-home pay. I've done the NYT rent v. buy calculator and tried a bunch of different scenarios, all of them indicating buying is better than renting in my area and situation as long as I stick to my target price point. I'm intending to put 5% down. After buying, with the cost of all of my monthly expenses (house payment, PMI, insurance, taxes, utilities, groceries, an occasional delivery dinner or night out, etc.) I will be paying a little more than I am in rent now, but I will still be able to save $2k cash every month (in addition to 401k and HSA). With my current savings, after closing I will have $15k in an emergency fund and an additional $7-10k on top of that, of which I may want to use $2-3k of to furnish the home. My question is, is there a "best practice" for how much cash to have after closing? As long as I have an emergency fund am I good to go? or should I lean the other way and put every dime outside of my emergency fund into the down payment? I've done a lot of research on buying but haven't found a generally-recommended answer to this question yet. [link] [comments] |

Income while taking vocational training or schooling? Posted: 25 Jun 2020 08:00 PM PDT I need advice on what the heck I should do. Me and my partner intend to move to Canada . Right now we are just waiting on my citizenship papers to get back to me. I am currently unemployed having been laid off from my last full time job. I am collecting unemployment however my state is reinstating a job search requirement at the end of the month and the extra benefits end after July. So my initial plan was to find a part time job that would barely cover all my monthly expenses ~1600$ to be comfortable, whilst going to school for some vocational or shorter training for a decent job I might actually enjoy. But with the job search requirement returning soon I fear all entry level jobs that I could actually healthily do (as someone who struggles heavily with social anxiety)would likely be flooded with applications and I do not believe I could manage an awful job I don't enjoy AND schooling at the same time My alternate new plan was to back on my few skills I do have. I have been drawing character art for 5 or so years and finally am trying commissions though haven't gotten one yet. I also have an adobe certification in photoshop I could possibly try to push in order to do digital design and photo editing freelance work. Though I do not know the practicality of these options I really would like to get some sort of vocational job training before I move to Canada as a means of actually securing a place to live there after we move Additionally what sort of vocational training would be good for a computer, artistic, socially awkward loser like me ? I'm just lost on what would be the smartest move Sorry if this is all over the place I wrote this in a panicked unwell state. [link] [comments] |
What should my order of goals be as an 18 year old? Posted: 25 Jun 2020 07:39 PM PDT I'm 18 and got pretty lucky with college so as long as I keep up a 3.0, I likely won't be paying for a single dime of it between my scholarships and federal pell grant. I make 350-600 a week and plan on living at home for at least the next two years of college. My only expense is paying $45 a week for car insurance (no gas expense because my delivery job pays me double what I use - $25 of my gas being used is reimbursed for $50) and I might need to start paying a bit more for it in a few months. Since I have essentially no bills or expensives and make decent income I've decided now is the time for me to be smart about it. Ive invested $600 into Robinhood because I'm curious about learning how stocks work (I'm going for safe long term holds) and I have probably about $500 split between checking savings and cash. What should I do next? I want to start contribution to a Roth IRA but I also still don't have a credit card and am still using a high school checking account. [link] [comments] |
How can I avoid stressing about money? Posted: 24 Jun 2020 11:56 PM PDT I have $400 in my bank account. My rent is $800 and it's due on the 1st. I unfortunately live paycheck to paycheck and was permanently laid off due to COVID. I was collecting unemployment, but my benefits stopped because I accidentally filed wrong last time. That was a month ago and I haven't been able to get through to unemployment and haven't received any money during that time. I'm going to have to take out a cash advance or small personal loan of some sort in order to pay my rent. And then I will have $0 and I will have to try and get through to unemployment to continue my benefits. Which are only good for another month anyway and just barely pay my bills. I have to apply for food stamps too I can't sleep right now because I'm so stressed about how I'm going to pay to live and eat [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Jun 2020 10:17 AM PDT A customer called our office and order 20k worth of goods. We entered all the information into chase payment tech and got an authorization. The customer came into our store a week later and picked up the goods. Fast forward two months and chase has pulled the 20k from the account. The purchaser has a stolen credit card. Chase is refusing to refund because the goods were not sent to any address so no way to investigate. Is this legal? We followed all of our usual Protocol? Can we do anything? Thanks! Posted: 25 Jun 2020 01:24 PM PDT My partner wishes to be a French and Spanish teacher. Originally she is from France and has worked in the UK for a year as well as doing her final year of undergraduate study here. During this time she has received pre-settled status and is about to start a double diploma, first year in France and second year in a partnered UK university in order to get her PGCE to teach in the UK. However we have just learned that she will no longer be able to get the bursary that we originally were banking on or any loan whatsoever, which would result in doubled fees and absolutely no financial support. Is there any chance that her having pre-settled status could be used in her favour for any loans? Thank you for any help because we simply cannot afford her education otherwise. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Jun 2020 01:04 PM PDT On memorial day while taking my son for a walk someone was walking there dog the opposite direction and as they passed the dog lunged over and bit me. At first I didn't think the dog had punctured me since it tore my pants but not through my pocket or underwear. I talked with the dogs owner for a moment but wanted to get my son away and I thought I was ok. I realized the dog actually did get me a little bit later and by then owner was out of sight. I went to the doctor and was told since I didn't know the dog and had no contact with the owner the dog is considered a stray and I would need to be treated for Rabies. I tried locating the dog owner multiple times by walking around that area and talking to some neighbors but no luck. I was called by the department of health for my state and told I would need to start the Rabies shots, 4 visits in total to the local hospital. I just received my bill in from my insurance which states patient responsibility is $2250 which is my full deductable. I never used my insurance much so didn't opt in for a better plan with a lower deductable which I'm feeling the full brunt of right now. I cannot afford to pay $2250 right now. Does anyone have any advice for me? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Jun 2020 05:32 AM PDT My boyfriend and I are moving in together. I am debating if having a joint checking account where we deposit an equal amount monthly and use it for rent and household expenses may be a good way to handle it. However, I am wondering what he will have access too in opening a joint account? Will he have access to my credit history (not bad, just some small personal family-related loans that I am not ready to speak with him about yet)? If so, then are there any other types of accounts I can use where we still have joint access without full access to each other's personal finance details? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Online bank application denied although it was my first time applying. Posted: 25 Jun 2020 06:43 PM PDT I went through a few finances subreddits and I think this one is the right one for my circumstances? If not, sorry!!!! I turned 18 recently. My parents and I thought getting a debit card would be a good idea since I'll be attending college soon. I've only recently gotten to looking into credited banks to apply for. In my mind, online banks are the way to go (personally) since they just seem more accessible and less expensive (from the few I've looked into, they have little to no fees which is pretty attractive to me). This is just my personal preference, my parents use banks they go to in person, but I like the idea of having my bank at the touch of my finger. I do want to state this information in the case it affected my application: right now I'm at a friend's home for summer vacation, so when I applied, I put in his address so that I'd have the debit card sent to me and not my actual residence. I've also had an account at my local uni credit union back home since I was born, but multiple bank accounts aren't an issue (to my knowledge). I'm new to this whole thing, maybe these are obvious deterrents, so I apologize for the ignorance on my part. After researching it a bit, I applied to Chime. I put in all my information and my application was refused. The rejection screen said that they couldn't disclose why my application was denied due to their privacy policy (so I genuinely have no idea why I was rejected). Since this was my number one choice, I contacted customer services to see if there was anything I could do. On the phone, I had an automated assistant which said (in sum) there was nothing I could do. To double check, I emailed a service email and I got a similar answer and that they can't reset/alter application refusals. I had a backup/number two online bank (Simple) that I thought was nice, too. I read through a few articles and all of the information on their site before applying. I got the exact same rejection. I put in the exact same information I had with Chime, so maybe that was sus to them? Because I had applied to two online banks (Chime and Simple) within the same day, I thought maybe that could be why? With this bank I also had no information as to why I was rejected, so I'm left clueless. I tried calling customer service, but they were closed. I was planning on calling tomorrow because I just want to get the card and be done with it. I think I'm going to let it go though, it's not the end of the world. I'm a bit discouraged, so I don't know what to do. My friend told me that we could just go to one of the in-person banks and set up an account there. Although I would much prefer an online bank, I think that's what I'm going to have to do. Does anyone have any advice or any idea why this is happening? I'm not applying for anymore banks now because I applied for two in such a short period of time and I don't want to start getting rejected for applying too frequently. TL;DR: I have all the necessary information and am eligible to apply for a bank account, but I've been rejected by two online banks. They can't tell me why I've been declined an account. Thank you for your help!!! I really appreciate it!!!! [link] [comments] |
