What’s the worst accounting interview you’ve ever had?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 04:01 PM PDT

After going through tons of interviews, I'm exhausted and glad to be done. Laughter is the best medicine, so please fire away and share your most cringeworthy, terrible interview experiences.

I'll start: In college, I interviewed with a certain mid-tier firm. The interviewer laughed when I walked in the door because I was dressed "too formal". Was wearing a sport coat, button up shirt, tie, and slacks.. so definitely my bad for not coming in with my Tommy Bahamas.

He then asked what I like to do for fun so I listed the various sports and hobbies I participate in. That was apparently not a hit and just warranted a frown then a barely audible "nice".

This dude then leaned back in his chair, PUT HIS SHOES ON THE TABLE 🤮, and started flipping through my transcript. He was apparently not satisfied with my 3.5 GPA and went through asking me to explain every grade below a B-with the furor of a tiger mom. Apparently he was an alumni and didn't remember the classes being "that hard."

I was asked if I had any questions at that point. Was too dazed to even ask anything since homeboy still had his fucking feet on the table so I rattled off the standard "why do you enjoy the job" "how would you describe the workplace culture" etc. After that, it was about 30 seconds of awkward silence before he suggested wrapping things up. I wasn't even asked a single question about my experience or why I would be a good fit for the role, lol. Interview was less than 10 minutes.

Its September 2021. And these clients are still making changes to their 2020 financials. What the fuck have they been doing all year..... 2 more fucking weeks. Then have to deal with individual returns. With how our firm does individuals its going to be a shitty month.

    Is anybody drinking more?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 08:37 AM PDT

I'm new to audit but I've been working for a couple of years. I realize that after I've started this journey in audit, I'm starting to drink more after working hours (but still working) anyone also experiencing the same thing? I feel like it numbs out the pain a little because this job is just sucking the soul out of me ☹️

State Licensing Board never received CPA exam scores

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 06:34 PM PDT

So I passed my last exam last July (michigan btw) before I started my current job. After I got my 2000 hours requirement at my job this July, I applied for my license. Well, I was informed by my state board that they never received my scores. I can still see "credit" on all for 4 if I go to CPA central, so it's not like my scores are gone. But when I contacted NASBA, they told me "if you took you exams in Michigan, your board has the scores." So I checked with my board again, and after waiting 3 weeks I finally get a simple email that says "confirmed we don't have your score."

I'm just at a loss for what to do. Both sides basically are saying it's not their problem and are being incredibly unhelpful. Has anyone else ever run into something like this before?

    Applying to Job at Client

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 10:24 PM PDT

For those who have successfully applied to jobs at one of your clients did you customize your resume/application to include specific projects/company terminology that you have experience with or is it best to keep it general as if you were applying anywhere? Is this something that comes down to what the terms of your engagements are in terms of confidentiality?

All My Fucks Have Flown Away

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 10:11 PM PDT

Fuck constant turnover. Fuck newbies who have no idea what the hell they are doing. Fuck upper management that exists only to make life harder for us. Fuck sucky pay. Fuck working nights and weekends and holidays.

That's it. I'm done. I'm going to update my resume and go to sleep. I love my team. I love what I am doing. I would hate to leave them in a bind, but I don't think I can take this any longer. Fuck it I'm done.

What can I do the summer before my full-time job?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 02:45 PM PDT

I recently accepted an Audit Staff job (not Big 4, a top 100 US firm) after completing my summer internship, start date is traditionally next September (which seems like a common thing among firms for new graduates) since I graduate April/May 2022.

My question is -- what can I do in the summer between graduation and my start date for work? Would it be unethical to apply for summer internships for other public firms (if they even hire graduating college seniors... I assume they'd say to just apply as a full-timer) with the intent of denying any full-time jobs that could pop up from completing the internship? What did everyone do the summer before their full-time job offer?

Got offered the greatest job I could ever have so far, any advice on going steady and not messing up?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 02:41 PM PDT

Peak industry job. Exactly what I want. Very stable industry not hit by the pandemic, comfy tasks, high salary which I don't even mind (I'm selling myself 50% lower in the market due to crisis), work-from-home, got almost no local colleagues, only report to a few people, the list goes on.

This right here is a shot of pre-pandemic stability right into my life. The pandemic hit me hard, got unemployed almost since it began in 2020, had to move back with parents, my medical health got critical (chronic medical patient, can hold any job and live entirely by myself, don't need special conditions or any special anything, just check myself to a hospital once a month at least).

I've grown used to being unstable for more than 12 months, this is what scares me. Every single month has been unstable/different. In the process of learning to stay calm despite any adversity, I've totally lost any sense of self-esteem or confidence. Interviewers only keep reinforcing I'm not useless or worthless.

TL;DR Any advice here? New job (offer) got the technical knowledge and experience, got no self-esteem or confidence. Reincorced my health long-term, actually gotta take less meds (one pill a day or less). Already got a steady place to live to sleep and stay. Been studying everyday. Got no conflict in life besides feeling extremely insecure. Don't even feel safe about the job offer because they've rescinded one from me before during pandemic ("we just closed our Q with negative KPIs, the position we offered you was actually just eliminated, sorry pal").

I need some advice for school

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 08:37 PM PDT

Hello everyone, I'm currently at Cal State Fullerton and in the school of business and economics. I declare this semester what my concentration will be in. I'm supposed to declare in Operations & Supply Chain Management but I'm thinking a bit instead of declaring in Accounting. My school boasts the fact that companies come and recruit accountants out of our school so it's nice to know that I can expect that if I do declare in accounting. Can I get some pros and cons and if accounting would be a right fit for me. A little about me is that I like to work in a team, interact with others, would prefer to move around than sit at a desk, I manage stress okay, at times it does get to me but I feel like pressure brings the best out of me. Anything would help, thanks!

Why am I being forced to memorize the Auditor’s Report?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 08:31 PM PDT

I'm currently in Auditing 1, my first exam is to memorize The Auditors Standard Unqualified Report and the Principles Underlying an Audit Conducted in Accordance with Generally Accepted Auditing Standards. Plus 70 MC questions and 15 full in the blank. I have never wanted to do drop out more.

Can I still get a job in accounting after not having used the degree in 10 years?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 04:40 PM PDT

I graduated 2010 during a time when the economy was hard hit, more professionals were being laid off than hired, had a few interviews but no offers at the time, so I decided to take a different route, became an assistant front end manager at the grocery store I was employed at to pay off my student loans and get some leadership experience in the process and add to my resume.

I continued to move up in the company by becoming a front end manager to where I did the cash accounting for the store and later at 2015 an assistant store manager. I've learned numerous skills such as analyzing the stores financial operating statements, merchandising, HR, financial, and managerial skills not to mention all of the soft skills I've developed.

It was my intention to keep moving up the ladder, become a general manager, work for the corporate office, become a DM etc, but after 18 months of covid and the labor shortage, I've been reevaluating making changes in my career choices, seriously consider using my accounting degree, and since I already have 150 credit hours, purchase CPA review materials and study for it and take it while I'm currently at my assistant store manager job.

So because I'm currently good at my job, developed a lot of hard and soft skill sets in my opinion accounting related, plan to pass all 4 parts of the CPA exam, I'd still be marketable and an interest to CPA firms even though I'm not fresh out of college, right?
