The Social Network I built from scratch has reached a huge personal milestone of 100 users! Posted: 05 Aug 2021 04:34 AM PDT I can't believe how a 100 users around the world decided to sign up to my site, which I developed from scratch. Is really mind-blowing to me! So recently launched a site to connect Koreans living overseas and build a helpful community (www.korseas.com) and I started spreading the word in the hopes that relevant people would find it interesting. I used a variety of social medias including Reddit, Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn, and I wan't expecting it to be have any sort of traction, but here I got to my first big milestone! So just wanted to encourage people to go out and present your products to the right people, and maybe they will find it interesting enough to try it out :) Also, if anyone has experience on this domain or any word of advice, I'd really appreciate any comments or feedbacks on the site. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
9 Lessons I Learned from Interviewing Successful Entrepreneurs Posted: 05 Aug 2021 08:30 AM PDT Over the last year, my team reached out to successful founders to find all about their stories to uncover the ins and outs of building a great startup. Fast forward to today, and we've had conversations with all kinds of entrepreneurs. Some took their businesses to unicorn status, others managed to achieve a successful exit before they even launched. From those conversations, we've compiled 9 key lessons every entrepreneur should have in the front of their mind when starting a new project. 1. Don't try to find ideas, try to solve problems Key Takeaway: Don't waste time looking for the next Facebook or Amazon. Instead, look for the problems people around you face and try to solve those problems in a better way. 2. Genuine curiosity is a superpower Key Takeaway: If the best way to start a business is to solve a problem, you first need to identify those problems. Genuine curiosity and interest will go a long way to helping you truly see the problems people around you face. 3. Don't expect investors to back a napkin idea Key Takeaway: Don't try to secure investment from day one. First, build a relationship with investors. Tell them your idea, and your plan to execute it. Get their advice and ask them what they need to see to be interested in investing. Then, get out there and do it! 4. Share your idea with as many people as possible Key Takeaway: Stop worrying about people stealing your idea. Simply put, a good idea is a great start. But it's nothing unless you put the work in and develop it into a viable business. Take every chance you get to reach out to people and ask for their feedback and advice. The majority of people who can help you have probably been in your shoes and will take your call. The different perspectives will help you learn:
And you may even pick up some stakeholders along the way, whether it's investors, advisors, talent, etc. 5. Don't rush when it comes to choosing co-founders Key Takeaway: Don't rush finding your co-founder. Take the time to look for someone who you can trust long-term. More than that, find someone who has complementary skills to you. If you excel at product more than marketing, look for someone who has a notion of product, but excels at marketing and sales. Finally, make sure you find someone who has similar values to you and is ready to put in the same level of work as you to get the job done. 6. Do whatever it takes to drive your business to its next milestone Key Takeaway: You need to get stuck in and do whatever it takes to drive your business to its next milestone. However, a big part of that is knowing when to step back and focus on the aspects of the business where you're most effective. 7. Don't underestimate the importance of product Key Takeaway: The first version of your product has to do two things from the get-go:
Make sure you either have this competence in-house or reach out to a product expert to help you. 8. Listen to your market & don't hesitate to pivot Key Takeaway: Don´t force your solution on the market. Instead, focus on fixing what wasn't working by pivoting the business. 9. Surround yourself with the right team, trust them & delegate Key Takeaway: To increase your chances of entrepreneurial success you need to find the right people to execute your vision. They need to be creative, agile, and have expertise in what you're hiring for. But more than that you need to be able to trust them. If you're able to trust them you can delegate with ease and know the job will get done. I hope these lessons can provide you some valuable insights that you can implement in your day-to-day work. If you want to read the full version here it is. [link] [comments] |

How do I grow my blog newsletter subscriptions? Posted: 05 Aug 2021 11:11 AM PDT Hey everyone! I'm looking for tips on how to grow blog newsletter subscribers. Posted: 05 Aug 2021 09:26 AM PDT I have a lot of property in some places near Split, Croatia (one of the most attractive and visited tourist places in Europe, maybe even the world). I'm not sure where all of the land is located but they're mostly more or less about 20-30ish minutes away from Split. Most notably this one land that we (my family) has is, i think, about 1500 m2 (16 145 sq feet according to google) big. From what i know, people here usually plant olives, have vineyards and stuff you'd usually find in areas with great weather, sea and beaches close, VERY visited touristic places. My family and i had an idea to plant olives there and use them to make olive oil to earn money since we know people who do the same thing. The problem is that we're about 8hrs away from Split, Croatia (by car) and only visit it once or twice a year, BUT we would visit it more often if needed. Now, apparently there are a bunch of different types of olive trees that can be planted, and supposedly they don't need that much care after a certain point. We have a great family friend (we consider him family) who's about 50ish years old, retired, and would check up on that land every once in a while so the idea of planting olive trees isn't impossible. I want to hear your guys' suggestions. Weed isn't legal there so that's not an option unfortunately lol (i mean it is, but I'd rather be a free man). One of the main sources of income for people in Split is renting apartments and houses for tourists during the summer and a lot of them can live the rest of the year off of that income alone! Unfortunately this land is i think too far from the city to make an apartment or house even with a pool, plus it's a pretty big investment sooo yeah… I'm open to all suggestions since there's just land there with nothing on it, so there are no limitations in that way. You must take in consideration that we can go there maybe 3-4 times a year (we're there for almost a whole month during the summer, like we are here right now for 3 weeks), i have family friends that could help in some way, i have an apartment there so having a place to stay and that sort of stuff and expenses aren't an issue, but the land is like i said 20-30ish minutes away from my apartment. The land could potentially be bigger than what i mentioned, i kinda doubt it's smaller than what i said. Thanks, and sorry for the essay lol. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Aug 2021 08:00 AM PDT I am facing a difficult situation currently. My immediate supervisor, an executive who I report to with projections, analysis of data, and updates, does not allow me to share any of this information with other executives until he reviews it. Now this would be perfectly fine, but the problem is that when reality looks bad or is behind our goals, he doesn't let me share that information with them. Instead, he uses very crazy, outlandish projections that are so far off from reality that the CEO and CFO has been questioning me about how I reach these projections and using their own made up ones because they do not trust the information that my supervisor gives them. I spoke with my supervisor about transparency and how this reflects badly on me when they question me about it and he repeatedly told me that he doesn't want them seeing the "bad" because it will make investors hesitant to invest. So they had been presenting very crazy projections to investors that do not reflect our reality at all. It is more so based on what they "envision" getting to. But don't you need accurate representations of our current reality in order to strategize to meet our goals we envision? He got upset with me for sending the updated projections to the other executives the other day because it "looks bad" and they started asking him questions about what's happening. My question is, should I have a private meeting with the co-founders to tell them what is happening? What should I do? I am afraid he will retaliate and fire me, but he is not being transparent or showing them the truth [link] [comments] |
If idea validation is so important, why all of the GOATs (Musk, Jobs, Gates etc) didn't do it? Posted: 05 Aug 2021 09:26 AM PDT In the startup space you often hear about idea validation. Things like "fake door test" (make a landing page for a feature that doesn't exist to see if people join a waitlist before developing it), customer discoveries, customer interviews etc. I even hear of "Customer Problem Stack Ranking". I can see the value in validating an idea before building it. I will certainly do it. But how come the GOATs didn't do it and still succeed? Musk decided to start Zip2 after a salesperson failed to sell to him a spot on yellowpages. Richard Branson started with a magazine and a mail-order business. How come most of the great entrepreneurs didn't validate their ideas like how people do today? Is that vision? Luck? Survivorship bias? [link] [comments] |
The Benefits of #Hashtags for your Business Posted: 05 Aug 2021 08:32 AM PDT So I am sure everyone has heard of hashtags at this point but what exactly are they and how can they help your business on Social Media? I have had so many clients ask me about hashtags and if they are using the correct amount, how do they choose the rights ones, and why are their posts still not being seen? Well, let's talk about it! For this blog post, I am going to use the Wellness industry as my example as that is the niche of most of my clients. What are hashtags? Hashtags are keywords or phrases related to a specific topic or piece of content. These words are used with the pound symbol "#" placed in front of them. Using hashtags tells the specific platform you are using, what your content relates to, making it easier for them to place it in front of an interested audience (well, so we hope). People may search certain hashtags if they are interested in a particular topic or industry and therefore it is a great opportunity to get your products or services in front of the right audience. How Many Hashtags should I use? The amount of hashtags you use varies greatly, depending on which site you are posting on. However, much like everything else in life, quality is much more important than quantity. When using hashtags it is important to focus on two factors. One, the number of people searching or engaging with particular hashtags, and two, the number of other businesses, influencers, etc using that same hashtags for their posts. Getting this balance right is the key to hashtag success. Hashtags are split into different categories depending on their usage. Nano, Micro, Mid, Macro, and Mega. Nano hashtags Nano hashtags have between 1K to 20K posts featuring that same hashtag, this means that competition is low and your post has a higher chance of being seen. However, you don't want to use a hashtag that has no activity so therefore click on the hashtag and see how recently people have been using it for their posts. I would suggest using about 10 of these hashtags on your posts. For example:
Micro Hashtags Micro hashtags have between 20K to 50K posts featuring that same hashtag. If you are brand new to Social Media and are in a very saturated industry such as fashion or beauty, I would suggest using a combination of Nano and Micro hashtags only, for the first few weeks to get your posts seen and engaged with. I would then start using more popular hashtags as your engagement increases. For example:
Mid hashtags Mid Hashtags have between 50K-500K posts featuring that same hashtag. I would use about 6 of these hashtags on my post but only after building up some following and engagement on my previous content. 500K images are a lot to compete with and therefore it is important that you already have an engaging audience that the algorithm will then push your post out to further audiences. For example:
Macro Hashtags Macro hashtags have between 500K - 1M posts featuring that same hashtag. I would only recommend using about 5 of these hashtags per post. If you have been getting a lot of engagement on previous posts I would start incorporating these more popular hashtags into my content. When you search for a particular hashtag there will be two pages, "Top" and "Recent". Your goal is to get onto the "Top" page which can be done by having a lot of engagement (comments, shares, and saves) on a particular post. This is why I always suggest building an engaging audience using smaller hashtags and then incorporating the higher hashtags into my posts later on. For example:
MEGA hashtags Mega hashtags have 1M + posts featuring that same hashtag. These types of hashtags are highly competitive and unless you have a huge, engaging, following, I would stay away from these. If you want to try and use a hashtag that has over 1 million other posts using that exact same hashtag then I would only use 1-2 per post. For example:
How Do I Choose the best hashtags? In combination with the hashtag categories above, I would also focus on using location-based, industry-based, image-based, and branded hashtags. Location-based hashtags These could be in reference to where your store is based, where you make your products, where your ideal audience is, or where your picture was taken. For example:
Industry-based hashtags These are in reference to the industry your business is a part of, such as beauty, fashion, art, etc. Remember certain industries have a lot of competition so use hashtags that are related to your industry but feature in the nano or micro category above. For example:
Image-based hashtags Look at your picture, name different things you can see within that image, and then find hashtags to match. For example:
Branded hashtags I think it is really important to get into the habit of creating new hashtags based on your business. When we post on Social Media, you will always see us use the hashtag #fasxfis. Encourage your customers to use your branded hashtag when posting pictures of your products or services. Using branded hashtags is a great way to keep track of who is interacting with your business too. Always use branded hashtags when doing a competition or a giveaway such as #fasxfisfreewebsite, and encourage people to use that hashtag when entering. Speaking of giveaways, have you entered ours to win a free website designed by us? Enter Here! How do I know if my hashtags are working? So you have taken all of the advice above, put it into action, and still don't know if your chosen hashtags are working. The first thing to do is ensure that all your Social Media profiles are Business Accounts and therefore able to provide you with the best possible insights and analytics. Within these insights, you will be able to see how many people viewed your post through your hashtags. I usually do an audit of our posts every two weeks to see what type of content people are responding best to, but also to see if my hashtags are working. If I find one of our posts got a lot of attention through the hashtags we used, I will take note of them and use some or all of the same hashtags on another post to see how it performs. Hashtags are definitely trial and error and therefore it is important to have a place where you can keep track of the hashtags that are performing well for your business. Remember hashtags are just one part of the "Social Media Cog" and need to be used in conjunction with high-quality images, engaging and entertaining posts, as well as valuable content, to get the perfect formula. You can check out my other blogs on the type of content you should be posting as well as how to create a month worth of content in minutes. [link] [comments] |
What would you want to see from an entrepreneurship documentary? Posted: 05 Aug 2021 02:01 PM PDT Hi everyone, I am looking to get some suggestions from this sub. I am a solo entrepreneur who has grown a small seven figure business in the last few years. My newest venture seeks to make a documentary series about entrepreneurs and their hustles. These entrepreneurs aren't the next Jeff Bezos or Bill Gates, but rather everyday people who are just getting their businesses off the ground and seeing some small success. I believe this demographic of entrepreneurs don't get a lot of the spotlight, but can offer so much inspiration to aspiring entrepreneurs. My question is, if you clicked on a documentary like this, what would you want/hope to see? What information or area would you want covered? What insights would you want explored? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 05 Aug 2021 01:42 PM PDT I remember back at my university, my entrepreneurship professor told me location is not everything (aside from marketing). He said that just because your business is highly visible from a busy road and sits on a corner, it does not indicate great things. What have you learned or heard about in regards to starting a small business and its location? [link] [comments] |
Vehicle Recovery in Central Colorado - Yah or Nah? Posted: 05 Aug 2021 01:36 PM PDT Any trade professionals in this subreddit? I'm an avid offroader in Colorado and actively participate in vehicle recoveries *for free* at this moment. I come to realize several new, inexperienced drivers are adventuring in the high country without 72 hour provisions, tire repair kit, or even spare tires. Most recoveries are simple and can move the vehicle on its power after a quick fix, others are more complex and require flat tow through dangerous terrain which includes an additional rig or two. No company working for profit today (except for one in the San Juans Mountains) offer any sort of recovery options in 4x4 trails creating a business opportunity that I have been slowly entertaining myself. There is a great SAR organization with 100% volunteer-based participants and do not charge a dime for vehicle recoveries. However, that is not sustainable with gas prices climbing and volunteers not available right away when a recovery is needed. I'm considering this to be my side hustle, but after considering commercial insurance, towing license, and other government fees I do not believe the business will survive unless I make 5-7 recoveries weekly (each at a minimum of $500 and up to $5000) and at that point I won't be able to keep my 9-5 job. The reason of this post is to hopefully get input from towing companies who have decided not to pursue recoveries in 4x4 medium to hard trails and/or remote county roads. Any help or additional input would be greatly appreciated! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 05 Aug 2021 12:14 PM PDT I work in SaaS sales for a mid to large company. I've been trying to get an understand on how profitable it is for non founders when a company is acquired instead of IPO'ing. Things are very different from each company, deal and when you join has a huge factor. My question is: Those who have gone through an acquisition what were you takeaways? Percentages, dollars, experiences. Whatever you are comfortable sharing I just want to learn more about it. [link] [comments] |
Market Research - Non-standard Employee Benefits Posted: 05 Aug 2021 12:06 PM PDT Doing some market research in the area of employee benefits, specifically non-standard or fringe benefits. As an employer, do you offer any unique benefits packages? As an employee, do you receive any unique benefits packages that you really like? Are there any benefits packages that you think should exist, but don't? Appreciate your time and thoughtful responses fellow entrepreneurs! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Aug 2021 12:02 PM PDT I realise there's a few apps for mobile devices that "kind of" do this. But ideally I'd love something that I can read easily on my laptop each morning. One blog or newsletter, in a single page of text, no images , no mess, no ads or bullshit. Just a long scrolling read, a flick to the right will take me to the next page (i.e. The next newsletter) I absolutely hate reading news or blogs on my phone because I just get distracted within seconds and trying to flick through news sites, with slow , jumpy loading screens and panic-inducing layouts just makes me want to die. I don't want to spend time scanning badly laid out pages for an article or piece to read. If nobody has built something similar yet, please do and I'd happily pay 20-30 bucks a month for something like this, if it was a really smooth, distraction-free experience, the time spent not-searching for decent articles/or getting distracted would be well worth it imo. Posted: 05 Aug 2021 12:01 PM PDT I have a messy process just now where I have 1 file with a bunch of information on it, email it over to another person who adds in some information, then then email to another person who reviews and approves it, who then email it to another person to review and approve it, who then emails it to another person to act upon the information on the file. This is confusing us all a lot in terms of what stage a file is at and so many emails we are a bit lost on what's going on. Is there something similar to docusign (one person signs a document, goes to next etc, sending out email reminders when someone needs sign, and you can track the progress of it all on the docusign portal) but for files without signatures? Early stage investor says you’re too early? Comeback? Posted: 05 Aug 2021 11:21 AM PDT Hi we have an mvp and I contacted an investor saying that we have an mvp and want investment to market the product (ads). The investor said to send them a pitch deck. I sent them a pitch deck and they say that we're too early and circle back when we have more traction and revenue. I think that finding traction would be very difficult without spending money on ads and a writer who writes blog posts. Our target market is a marketplace of musicians and retail investors. What should I say or do? [link] [comments] |
VC until Series A- then hard stop! Posted: 05 Aug 2021 11:09 AM PDT TLDR Should you only raise non-dilutive capital once you're profitable? I think this will be a pretty controversial post, but I want to preface that I'm asking more than asserting. I've been looking through Crunchbase in my spare time to try and find patterns for companies raising rounds, and one thing caught my eye. A bunch of really big companies like NerdWallet, Carvana, and Soltage, all raised large rounds of debt financing. What I'm trying to understand is why there aren't more of these "debt rounds" as early as possible so as to dilute as little equity as possible. Carvana for example raised 800 million in debt financing over 2 years! 200 million of that was just a few months after raising a 160 million Series C. Was raising that impossible before the Series C? We have seen massive raises by the "non-dilutive capital markets" ( Pipe, Clearo, Capchase, Lighter Capital) and the growth of the adjacent market ( Fundstory , intro, paper , Finley ), which would seem to indicate that there is at least some sort of future for this sector. I guess my question really is: As a decision-maker in your company, would you only raise non-dilutive capital after a Series A? If not why not? ( remember you're at a Series A at this point, you don't need "connections" that VC has to offer) [link] [comments] |

Posted: 05 Aug 2021 10:31 AM PDT Title says most of what needs to be said. I've been trying to support my business partner in the business she had been working to create before I got on board and helped develop it into a working business. I could rant about my gut feeling that we under charged for our services, but I'm 7 months out of college and she hasn't graduated. C'est la vie. I know she has been investing time and money into learning about entrepreneurship yet has been making mistakes that are simply common sense. We've made a deal on running this company and earning 50/50 (which is already off kilter effort wise less than a week after launch). If it wasn't for her social media presence bringing in customers I'd reason that I should jump ship sooner than later and try to take our students with me since I do most of the teaching anyways. I think in that regard I need to develop a social media presence to feed my business and become independent. We're essentially in a situation right now where we need each other to get started before we could go our separate ways. I think leaving now would be harder than putting up with this for a while. I care about my partner, but I gotta look out for myself, my future, and my paying customers who need to receive fair and equal treatment. I've had a deficit of communication from her (especially before our sales pitch and first class) that is somewhat improving, but in some ways problematic. She hasn't completed billing our students for this month's lessons (I will try to get control of our finances next month). She has bent over backwards to satisfy a complaining customer who had paid for a service that we aren't ultimately providing because of our class structur and schedule. Instead of a issuing refund, she is personally paying me for the private lessons I would offer the customer outside of the group lessons we offer. The customer didn't want to pay for my incredibly generous quoted price. I feel this is unfair for our satisfied customers by trying to satisfy an unsatisfied customer, and could lead to problems if the other students discovered this deal. But the issue that is of most concern is that she recently revealed to me (fortunately not public) that she is dating one of our students. We all know this is taboo in any academic institution up to college. How then is it OK here, regardless of if the guy is nice or not? The fact of all the stress she's put on me aside, this is not fair for me financially because I doubt she'd charge him, unfair to other students because of favoritism, and ultimately any discovery of it by students would be a massive blow for her reputation and that of the company (and as a result, it would affect my reputation too), be it from gossip or otherwise. This, above all, shows a cavalier attitude towards running our business (although she appears obsessed with 100% customer satisfaction at all costs) and me, tactlessness in separating her business and personal life as well as her relationship with me, and disregard to the consequences of her actions (and omissions). She seems to be following my admonition about the other matters (although I am considering reversing the deal with our unsatisfied student and issuing a refund for the integrity of our business), but this dating development is the most brazen assault on my trust and respect for her. I know people can change for the better, but for my own sake and that of the business, this is a matter I must address. My gut feeling in the issue is to tell her to terminate her relationship with him or/and removing him from our school. I know only terminating the relationship would possibly lead to gossip and/or slander that would be injurious to the business' integrity. If she removes him from the business that could lead to bad blood between them and stress her out more. How should I address this issue? I just feel like I'm trying to drive this business upwards because I've tried to begin with the end in mind, but it really is starting to feel like she is, intentionally or not, trying to drive the business into the ground. Thank you for your help! [link] [comments] |
