Neighbors below moved my security camera out of view and then placed a cloth over it.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 06:13 AM PDT

Hello, I live in Massachusetts, US.

My neighbors below have been terrible to live with. They had previously had friends / customers shackled up in our basement who ended up stealing a bunch of our stuff. We suspect they are dealing drugs. There have been dozens of people coming and going since they have been here. It was supposed to be a woman and her two kids. The two kids are LONG gone and now it is just her, her boyfriend, and another man.

Our landlord said he was happy with the cameras as those below have been unruly and difficult.

    RE: the cameras

We have set up 5 total cameras, the only one they have messed with is the one facing the basement door which also faces their door since they are next to each other. This particular camera has been there for quite while and they even saw us install it. The man below (who is not on the lease) said "A camera? Good idea" when he saw us. This and the other cameras are not something new.

What does the law say in this case?

We installed the cameras to watch for thieves and no longer feel safe in our own home. We do not have any signs saying that the property is being watched. The cameras are NOT hidden and are in plain sight. We do have "No trespassing" signs.

    Thanks for any help!

Edit: This is a two-family house. The cameras face the front door (porch pirates), the mutual hallway, the driveway, the yard, and the garage and half the yard.

Edit 2: The people downstairs do not have access to the feeds.

Edit 3: One of their friends moved the camera by using the end of a rake to physically push the camera out of view then placed a cloth over it.

Being ghosted by MIL after she transferred our house sale proceeds to her personal account after a bank-caused deposit error. Help needed on next steps.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 08:48 AM PDT

My wife and I just sold our first home, resulting in around 12k given back to us in the form of a check. We closed last Friday, 7/30/21, where we IMMEDIATELY went to our bank to deposit the check. Our bank no longer uses deposit slips, instead opting for us to provide our driver's license and our bank associated debit card - she provided this information.

The bank requested I also provide the same information and sign as well since my name was also on the check. We were advised this was to ensure I was ok with where the money was going.

My wife's personal bank account uses her maiden name (important detail for later) and shortly after clarifying that information, the check was deposited and we were on our way. We move and it's now Tuesday and we've not seen the check clear.

My wife happens to check the account she shared with my mother-in-law, which was to help her manage her money - my MIL has a major problem with spending and hoarding. The bank deposited the check there, even though my wife isn't the primary holder of the account.

My MIL took every dime from the proceeds of our sale and transferred them into her own personal account. She is now ghosting us and not responding to texts or phone calls. For clarity, we owe her no money.

So now, we're lost on how to get the money back, short of calling the police. Can we contact our bank who made the error? Will we need to take action with the police? I'm trying to avoid legal and other drama here.

Sexual assault case - perpetrator’s lawyer keeps saying he has “videos that will likely embarrass me”

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 07:21 AM PDT

I (34f) am the victim in a sexual assault, rape, case against my ex-bf (34m, crazy person) in southeast MA. I didn't know this other thing was even a crime until the police caught it in the text messages I had forwarded them between my ex and I. In the conversation, I clearly get upset when I realize he had filmed us having sex one night and I had no idea. He sent me a picture from the video saying "I can't stop watching this" in which I am BLINDFOLDED and I said "excuse me, wtf, you took pictures?!" And he said "pictures? I video taped the whole thing."

Okay so in addition to a rape charge, he is facing a charge of filming someone in the nude without their knowledge (or some combination of words along those lines).

There was a magistrate hearing at the beginning of July (which ultimately was rescheduled for September) where his lawyer repeatedly mentioned to the detective involved that he had "more videos to enter into evidence that are potentially embarrassing" for me. I assume other videos where we consensually filmed ourselves doing sexual stuff.

What relevance might they have? Is this a tactic to get me to back down? Shouldn't I have access to these videos?

To be clear, I am not worried about being embarrassed. If this is just a scare tactic, go for it. We can sit in court and everyone can watch. Who cares. Fuck this guy. I just do not understand how that could be relevant to the night and/or offenses in question.

Any insight into this will be greatly appreciated.

Stored my vehicle on future father in laws property, now he thinks he owns it. (Washington)

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 06:35 AM PDT

Hello, I am looking for some advise for this situation. About a year ago now my and my girlfriend purchased a vehicle from my girlfriends father. All done by the book, Bill of sale and the title is in both my name and hers. I had been storing this vehicle in his driveway with his permission since it is not my daily driver. About a month ago now my girlfriend and her father had a falling out and I was immediately asked for the title back to this vehicle by her father. Essentially stating I owed him more money although there was no contract or mention of this when we transferred the title. Essentially in his mind it's his vehicle again.

We now want to go pick up this vehicle but we are pretty sure we will be met by him with his combative behavior and most likely asked to leave. What are our legal options? Is it legal to just show up and drive off in this vehicle? I have received mixed responses from our local pd about the possibility of what they call a domestic standby. I plan to get this taken care of here soon but obviously I want it done by the book and would like to avoid the court system as that could take time and I worry about him sabatoging or damaging the vehicle. The vehicle is about 2 feet off a public alley so I am unsure of trespassing charges. Any thoughts?

Boss pushing me to quit so he doesn't have to pay unemployment

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 06:33 AM PDT

Two weeks ago, my boss yelled at me for sending him the incorrect document. He then told me to give him my keys, as he was firing me. I went to clean out my office and he went back on it saying he didn't want to pay unemployment. So he's been trying to push me out since. He has been making my life hell, telling me multiple times my employment here isn't working out, but he won't fire me. He is now forcing me and only me to do 8.5 hour days as a salaried employee, but all other salaried employees only need to work 8 hour days. Is what he's doing legal? What should I do? (Besides look for other employment, which of course I am doing)

Can I use bear spray against a dog?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 09:09 PM PDT

So my neighbors dog bit my daughter on the ear and viciously ripped apart one of my cats. Today I had a fallout with them because I caught their dog on my porch once again and the cops got called on me when they were in the wrong. The cop suggested a restraining order but I can't just put one on the dog they are super irresponsible and let the dog out constantly. My question is, can I legally bear spray it or do I really need to go out and buy the kind for dogs? I don't want to hurt the animal but I have to stand my ground at this point its a pest. Its bitten children in its own household and they still refuse to get rid of it and animal control won't do crap and they apparently don't care because I've called plenty of times. I'll take the downvotes IDC I gotta get this solved ASAP.

    Father Died With Debt

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 10:19 AM PDT

My father died earlier this year leaving my disabled mother with a negative balance bank account and no life insurance. Companies are calling to collect. They are asking me if I am the executor of the estate (they are calling my mom but due to her disability she doesn't know how to answer except to give them my phone number). I was low contact with them for years so I don't know everything my father was involved in or how much debt he had (but I imagine it was a lot based on the amount of calls).

So a few facts in case it matters:

    - My parents were married and living in Utah.

    - The home (a trailer) is in my mom's name, it is fully paid off.

    - My mom has no income.

    - My mom is not named on any of my father's accounts except the bank account with the negative balance.

    - I've been informing each one that my father died, they ask if I am the executor of the estate, I tell them I am just his daughter, that he doesn't have an estate or an executor.

    - To my knowledge, there is no estate. So if there is no estate, I assume there is no executor?

I don't know how to check to see if he had an estate but I want to say that because they were so poor, because they were living month to month with no savings, that there was no estate. Is there a way to be sure? Is my mom responsible for any of his debt? Would she be at risk of losing her home? Am I in anyway responsible for any debt because they have my phone number?

[MI] Employee shooting cats that hang out around factory.... is this illegal?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 10:14 PM PDT

    This is in Michigan

Husband works overnight at a factory, there's no real "supervisor" there overnight right now, just an employee with the title of team lead that's in the process of being promoted to supervisor if I understand correctly.

There are a bunch of stray cats that hang out in the area, and the team lead has been killing them with a BB gun (I think it's that kind of gun, at least...) Tonight, he shot a crossbow at a rabbit that was just hanging around. He killed a bunch of kittens recently.

I don't think the managers know about this, but they don't like the cats being there so I'm not sure they'd disapprove.

Could I report this to animal control? The police? Is this illegal in any way? It breaks my heart to keep hearing about these things happening, and I want to stop it somehow.

Strangled, car burned, dog stolen police acted like they didn’t see obvious burn to car seat. No report made. All captured on surveillance.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 01:31 AM PDT

Please help. I'm in Pueblo Colorado and I went to the bar tonight with my roommate and our friend. Our friend kept hitting me and grabbing my throat in the tavern trying to get me to kiss him. I played along because he was being loud and I didn't want to cause a scene. I figured he's probably pass out soon when we got back to the house. Well everything was mostly fine (except for our friend getting grumpy) until we got out of the car when he decided to knock my food out of my hands. Then I decided he wasn't coming into my house being this violent (he walks or gets ubers all the time from our house). I then ran to my door but stopped running because I remembered it was my house and I can kick him out even if he walks in. He then grabs my shirt when we reach the steps ripping it. I turn around and tell him to stop and he's not coming in acting like this. He then rips my shirt almost off and I punched him. I tried to get him to the ground telling him to stop the whole time but he kept grabbing at and squeezing my throat. My roommate then came out with the dog to walk it. He saw me choking and tried to get our friend off me and I ran inside to call the police. Then my roommate came in and said he ran off with my dog and was choking it. So I called the police and went outside to look. While my roommate ran after him. He got the dog and he is safe. I talked to a neighbor about what happened waiting on the police when my roommate walked back toward the road and noticed this fucking dude was trying to set my car on fire. So I then went and tackled him to the ground with the help of a neighbor who saw and my roommate and we let him go when the police got there. The police interviewed him first. I was having a panic attack but I was composed. Our friend had been drinking. Me with only two and our friend all day presumably. I was scared they were gonna let him go because his sisters on city council. When I brought the police over to my vehicle to show them the burns they pretended not to see them. One cop literally said ,seeing a cigarette butt in my seat, "your cigarettes did that" even tho I called 911 telling them how he's catching my car on fire in front of me. I told them to look at my throat and see the marks and they said that they could give us both tickets because he had marks and we could both appear in court. I said that's what I wanted and I wanted to press charges and he didn't do it. He just moved on in conversation. They later told me to go inside and gave me no copy of a report or anything. I showed them my car a few times and each time they moved their cameras away. I had to make them point their cameras at the evidence. I'm scared that the police or our ex friend might kill me if I press further. This just happened tonight. I'll answer any questions that can help my case. Please help or I'm scared there won't be any evidence of this on the cops side. Including no report. I'm going to get security camera footage from my apartments tomorrow and I'm going to try and get the footage from the bar. But any advice would help at this time. Please and thank you all. I also have photos if that helps.

Lawyer won't respond, do I sue my own lawyer?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 09:13 AM PDT

TL;DR Paid Lawyer $8,000 to represent my Daughter in her custody battle. Lawyer continues to tell us the orders are drawn up and we are just waiting on the judge to sign them. It's been 6 months and we still have no documentation of custody orders or any child support.

We are in Texas. When it became clear to my Daughter that the baby's father was not going to take the steps necessary to take care of his child, she enlisted in the Air Force. When she joined the Air Force we hired a lawyer to draw up split custody orders with my Daughter having the final say in education and health issues.

My daughter has now been in the Air Force for 2 years and the father has unfortunately gone down a dark path of drugs and has no stable job. In January of this year he made threats to post compromising pictures of my daughter on social media and in my daughter's opinion has become increasingly unstable and sporadic. Up to this point he has never provided any financial support for the baby. Visitations have been provided, but she no longer feels the baby is safe in his presence alone. So in January, we hired a lawyer to A) Do something to stop him from posting inappropriate material on social media of my daughter that could possibly compromise her career. and B) get full custody of her child and adjust visitation to supervised as well as force drug testing.

In April our Lawyer was finally able to get a hearing and serve him papers. The hearing was conducted over zoom so my daugher was not there in person. However our understanding is that the Father must perform random drug tests, has supervised visits and is obligated to start paying child support. I say "our understanding" because we have not seen any documentation to this point.

It is now August and my daughter still has no documentation, has received on child support and the Father is essentially calling my daughters bluff that anything is going to happen. He has been in and out of rehab since the april hearing and wants to have unsupervised visits with the baby. My Daugther has no intention of keeping the baby from the father, however she feels like she has no legal footing at this point. The lawyer has stopped responding to requests for updates and what timeline we should expect. The last message we received was that the orders are waiting for the judge's signature and we are the mercy of when he gets around to it. My daughter is feeling desperate and that there will never actually be any resolution. I'm not sure what our next steps are? Do I need to find another lawyer?

Estranged mother calling fake wellness checks on me

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 07:35 AM PDT

Location: I live in New Jersey, but work in New York City. My mother also lives in NYC.

Dunno if "fake" is the right term but I haven't. Also not looking for any judgements on my situation; I'm not going to start talking to her and any moral judgements will be reported.

Anyway, I am 28 and haven't spoken with my mother in over 10 years. I live on my own. My mother lost custody of me when I was in my teens and I lived in a group home after that, but I have no mental health or criminal records aside from that.

A couple weeks ago my mother started trying to get back in touch with me over email/text/Facebook. There's no indication of any sort of legal issue behind this (e.g. a death in the family and a will/property needs to be sorted out). The tone of all these messages has been "why won't you talk to me?" Whenever she tries, I block it and save a screenshot and a note of the time (in Evernote and Dropbox). Sometimes she uses a made up name, but she always uses the same profile pic and ends them with "Love, Mom." I have never responded.

Last week (Thursday) I got visited by the local cops. They said that my mother called in a wellness check because we usually talk daily but she hadn't heard from me. I but they seemed very judgemental. Then last night I got another visit. This time, the cops said that they were told I was making suicide threats on social media. The officers who came last night said they couldn't tell me who called in the wellness check this time. So she's basically using the cops and wellness checks to harass me since it's less likely to get her in legal trouble (than making a new Facebook account every day).

My nightmare scenario is that 1) next time they bring me to the hospital for a psychiatric evaluation 2) the cops kick my door in because I'm asleep/out, 3) she calls the cops to my work. Though I don't know how likely any of those are.

    Thanks for the advice.

    I bought a dying bird

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 12:05 AM PDT

So last Thursday I had went to collect and purchaze a 2 year old conure from a listing on Gumtree. The lady had stated "Very healthy, never had to take him to the vet as always healthy & kept his nails trimmed" I got there, it was dark and I couldn't tell until I got home that it could not fly, it was shaking uncontrollably, barely able to perch, severe malnutrition, vitamin A deficiency shown on beak. I went to the vet the next day and they said they couldnt even give it a 1/5 on their health rating and that the older vet had one look at it and said it's going to die. The cage she had him in was a fucking nightmare. Rusted and covered in his own solidified poop. I am now trying to rehab the bird.

I have contacted the lady and she keeps stating that it was healthy and now will not respond to my messages. I have her address and first name. I don't know what to do or who to call. Australia, NSW.

Vehicle I traded into dealership was involved in a hit & run. Insurance is saying I'm at fault

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 11:18 AM PDT

    Located in North Carolina

I traded my car into the dealership in 2018, and bought a brand new car.

2 weeks ago I received a letter in the mail stating the car was illegally parked and towed. It stated that if I was not the current owner to "disregard". I received 2 other letters this week from a lawyer asking for my insurance information because a vehicle I owned was involved in a hit & run accident.

I've now called the lawyer, with no reply, I called the insurance provided on the letter and they said I am on the hook for the accident since I am the last listed owner.

I tried to call the dealership to get more information on what they did with the car once I traded it in, but they said they would "get back to me". The only paperwork I still have from the trade in/sale is just a signed letter showing the trade-in amount and the vehicle description, the VIN is not listed on the document.

My questions are: Am I actually on the hook for the damage to the vehicle involved in the hit and run? How do I prove that as of 2018, I was no longer the owner? Do I need to get a lawyer, or will my insurance handle this?

Amazon forcing customer into free trial, then reactivating the subscription after it has been cancelled during the free trial period.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 06:14 AM PDT

Virginia, USA. I was notified by email that Amazon had signed me up for a free trial of "Britbox" without my knowledge or consent. I went into my account and cancelled that subscription before the end of the free trial. I even have a confirmation email that the subscription was cancelled and I will not be charged. This was late July. Yesterday I was notified that I had re-subscribed for the "Britbox" and my account has been charged. The charge is $6.99, I understand that is not a lot comparatively. But this is still a massive red flag to me. A company forcing their customers into Free Trials without their consent, then even after that customer cancels the free trial and is notified of its cancelation, the company then re-signs them into a full subscription of that service. Again, without their consent. This to me seems illegal, at the very least extremely shady. I wanted to reach out to someone and get their thoughts. Anyone else ever have something like this happen? I sent through hours of customer support trying to explain the situation and did get the subscription cancelled and the refund has been initiated. But, now I have no guarantee this won't happen again at the end of this month, or happen with a different subscription.

    Edit: Forgot to include location.

my boss at my California employer told me I am "too gay" and he finds it distracting. Is this grounds for a lawsuit?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 09:11 AM PDT

from what I can gather this is just because I talked about a few weekends in palm springs or going out to clubs a few times. Nothing that would feel out of the ordinary coming out of a straight person's mouth. I feel uncomfortable at work but the pay is really good and don't want to leave. What are my options here? I feel like making a claim through HR will result in inaction and possible retribution.

I (19F) was falsely accused of child abuse, can I report a false accusation?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 12:37 PM PDT

I'm an Arkansas college student. I have babysat with a nanny agency from 2018 to March of this year.

The last family I sat for through the agency was wonderful, very kind and even made me food etc…

I got a call about 4 weeks ago from a DHS agent who arranged to meet with me in person, she explained that the parents filed a complaint against me accusing me of pushing and pinching their daughter, they provided police with video evidence of the incident as well.

I reviewed the video and photos that claimed I harmed the 11 month old and answered all of the agents questions. In the video I am no where near the child, I never even touch her in the clip. I only verbally say "no". The agent called me today and let me know that the case was closed.

Is it possible to report this family for falsely accusing me? I don't want anybody else to go through the range of stress that I did.

[TN] - Our son died without a will, wife from recent marriage is liquidating and taking everything

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 09:30 AM PDT

Background: Our son has two small children (4 years old, boy and 2 year old girl) from a previous marriage and we will be taking full custody of them.

Our son passed away unexpectedly at age 40 due to a heart attack. He had no Will.

He had a house that he had about 50% equity in, lots of possessions, and money in his personal bank account.

He married about 6 months ago (he has owned the house for 15 years and is the only one on the deed). We had no contention with his wife until he passed. She is now listing his house on the market, and selling all his belongings, and has already withdrawn the majority of his personal money and trying to cash out his 401k / other brokerage accounts (has successfully liquidated one).

So my question is this - my understanding is that in TN the surviving spouse is entitled to a "child's share" of the estate, since there are two children, and that share would be 1/3, I believe. She is in the process of just assuming she gets everything, liquidating everything, putting his real estate on sale, and taking everything for herself with no interest in helping his dependent children (she pretty much left them on our doorstep from day 1). Is there a way we can put a freeze on her doing anything, and have her penalized for doing this stuff outside of the probate court? Will she get in trouble for this? What's our recourse? We are suppose to talk to a lawyer later but I'm trying to get a handle on what to expect. Ideally I'd like to ensure that my son's assets that the children are entitled to go into a trust to pay for their education, first house, first car, whatever they need, and towards their continued care as we will be raising these children.

New owner took down fence dividing property line.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 09:48 AM PDT

I live in sacramento, ca. My Previous neighbors dogs destroyed our dividing property fence line and refused to help replace it. I ended up building a 2nd fence on my property to prevent their dogs from coming over to my backyard. Now the new owner of the house tore down that dividing fence line without notifying me, what legal rights do I have to have him replace that fence. Am in my legal right to tear down my own fence? I would like to reclaim the extra 6 inches of my property I lost when I had to build the second fence.

Follow up question: if I take down the second fence I built and the new owners dog comes over to my property what legal right at that point do I have as well

    Employer provided meals legal responsibilities

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 10:55 AM PDT

I'm currently a cook/chef in the United States providing meals to employees at a remote location. I am the only person at this facility providing meals. The company takes money out of our paycheck to pay for the food.

Recently, an employee has become extremely unhappy with the meals claiming we are not feeding him enough. We are not providing for his nutritional needs. To my knowledge he is not diabetic or has any food allergies. But claiming there is too much salt, sugar, oil in the food and it's unhealthy stuff. We have prepackaged foods available he is also unhappy about.

We have attempted to cater to his demands but our supplier is unable to provide what he needs. I am not given the best stuff to work with and have done my best to provide a reasonable meal that works for everyone.

I do accommodate special requests and take input in and care about what I'm serving. Some days meals are better than others and sometimes I screwup a side dish because of factors not normally faced in a commercial kitchen.

Employees are able to cook in the kitchen if they want and have full access to the pantry. This dude is refusing because he is paying the company to have all meals provided/cooked for him even on our days off.

To my understanding I am to provide two meals a day. If requested bag lunch on days off.

This dude is threatening to take company to court over not receiving food that meets his specific nutritional needs and calorie intake.

So is he a picky eater or is anything legal I need to do to protect myself. Is there anything wrong that we are doing? Is there anything I need to be made aware of? Lastly what is a "reasonable" meal legally.

This dude wants a banquet but honestly I'm just providing home cooked meals and working with what I get.
