Posted: 04 Aug 2021 09:15 AM PDT I have fish that will die without their habitat being powered. Is this legal? What are my options here? I've never had struggle with this landlord before and have always paid rent on time as well as took care of the place. Edit: Called landlord, said she didn't have the money to pay the bill because of my neighbors not paying rent. I'm moving here in 2 weeks and she has been aware of that for a few months now, and I can't bump up my uhaul reservation. By the way she spoke it seemed like this was indefinite. Very frustrated. Posted: 03 Aug 2021 08:30 PM PDT So I won't get into details but essentially my dad invited me to something, I told him (truthfully) that i had a doctors appointment scheduled for that time that would conflict with the plans. and for a while he kept bugging me to cancel it Then shortly after I decided to reschedule the appointment for separate reasons I won't get into, but my dad apparently thought I was lying to him and called the clinic to ask if I had an appointment. They told him I rescheduled it and now he confronted me about it. It seems really weird that the clinic gave my dad that kind of information without asking me first. I don't know if this infringes on my rights as a patient, but at the very least it seems very invasive edit; i'm in the US [link] [comments] |
Is it legal for a landlord to ban video games? Posted: 04 Aug 2021 01:44 AM PDT My landlord is a pretty overbearing mother and we are all college students rooming together with her son. We are about 2 weeks from moving in again (new lease each year) for our final year when she sends an email containing "You all are Professional Engineer students, sitting to study a lot and spend too much screen time. The best relaxation and re-energizing ways are doing outdoor physical activities and indoor house chores in addition to sleeping. In the rental lease agreement this coming year, I'll have "No drugs, no alcohol, and no online gaming inside the unit". If anyone have problems with it, please let me know. Thank you. Hope you all get the best out of yourself and make those who love you proud of you." Besides the fact that we are all 21+ in colorado and that we won't be signing a lease containing this: Is this legal to have in a lease? [link] [comments] |
I think my employer is keeping tips I thought were for Back of House, what should my next steps be? Posted: 04 Aug 2021 10:16 AM PDT Hey y'all, I've worked as a waiter at a restaurant in Washington State for over a year now and was told when I was hired that I had to tip out 20% of my tips every night to back of house staff (cooks + dishwasher). I was very OK with this, worker solidarity and all that, and have been taking 20% of my tips and giving them to the owner of the restaurant (it's a small, family-owned restaurant) to be distributed. Recently, as we were waiting for a table to leave, one of the cooks offhandedly mentioned that they wished they got tipped too and seemed surprised when I was shocked that they didn't. I told them about the above policy and they confirmed they had never received a tip. I checked with the dishwasher that was on shift that night, as well, and they said the same. Those positions cover the entirety of our BOH staff, so the only option left in my mind is that the owner has been keeping these tips. I'm just looking for what my next steps should be - I think that I need to either gather more info, get a lawyer, or go to the state labor board but am unsure which should happen first. Just looking for advice on what I can do now that maximizes my chance of getting back the thousands of dollars I've paid my employer now. In case it matters, I was hired and trained on this before covid, so this isn't a covid-era measure they've implemented. I'm trying to be semi-vague in case of retribution, but can provide more specific info (city, etc.) if necessary. Thanks! Edit: Thank you for all the advice! I called the Washington Labor & Industries and they said the above was enough to warrant an investigation, but I'll be waiting until after my next shift to check if anybody BOH is comfortable with me providing their name + info in a complaint, and to triple check they haven't received anything. Assuming they don't contradict what I've heard, I'll be filing a complaint. Reallly, the whole situation has been infuriating and even more so because it wasn't clear what I should do to fix this - the advice has all been incredibly helpful, thank you. [link] [comments] |

Can I make sure my baby’s dad gets full custody if we split? Posted: 04 Aug 2021 05:57 AM PDT I'm 32 weeks pregnant with my fiancé and he recently revealed he hates me. He wants to work through it in therapy, but I'm prepared for things to end. My #1 priority is having zero legal custody of our child if the relationship ends. Will he be legally responsible for the baby if I don't want custody? Or do we have to be married for him to have any legal responsibility? I have no reason to believe he wouldn't want full custody; he has talked about taking the baby from me when we argued early on. But still, I am paranoid I'll end up taking care of a child that I don't have the mental health or desire to take on. (Bot told me to add location, I am in Virginia currently, possibly looking to move to Tennessee before my due date) [link] [comments] |
Parents locked me out of house and its day 3 of living in my car Posted: 04 Aug 2021 08:17 AM PDT Age 21 Male USA Pennslyvania. They are trying to evict me but have not gone through any of the paperwork for that and instead just locked me out of the house like 2 days ago without warning me beforehand. All of my stuff is in the house still and they said they would give me my stuff when I got a new house. I don't money for an apartment right now and I just have been living in my car. I already called the police on my parents but my parents knew the cops and the cops told me if I come back to this house they gonna get me in trouble. I tried to contact the police supervisor but they threw me in a loop and wouldn't let me talk to him. The police station here is so small they can kinda make up their own rules. I talked to the judges office here and asked if I was allowed to return home and she said I would need to get an attorney to answer that question. I lived in this house all my life and get mail here and everything and even paid a month of rent in March of 2021 but it just seems like I can't win. I only want to live here for like a week or two until I get a job and can move out for good. I don't know what to do, my parents clearly have little legal standing on this matter but nobody cares what I have to say so I just don't think I can ever win this. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
City Built a New Storm Drain - Now My House Floods - Atlanta, GA Posted: 04 Aug 2021 08:12 AM PDT The city built/rebuilt a portion of our stormwater runoff system in mid-2020. This included building a large runoff pond and sewer pipe feeding it that sits about 100' in elevation above the grade of my home, and maybe 500' away from it. In August 2020, heavy rains overflowed the pond, and filled the street, and park, and yards of about 5 houses (mine included) with about 4' of water. It came up just to the edge of my porch. It absolutely destroyed my car (on which I owed about $25k which insurance totaled. & paid), and maybe 5 other cars who were parked on the street, as well as 2 or 3 who attempted to drive through it and were swamped, and ended up floating away. No worries, we thought; things happen, we have insurance, no big deal. Fast forward to maybe... December 2020, and it happened again, but a little worse. Fortunately we have learned to park further up the street, so no major damage to us, but another few cars caught in it and totaled, plus railroad ties from our yard floated free and broke our neighbor's fence. Again, not a huge deal. Each time it carries away all of our trashcans away every time, and anything left in the yard, and fills our yards with trash from the sewers and streets, destroys all landscaping and grass (we've given up on having those), and occasionally cars float into houses/fences/trees. It blows manhole covers off and shoots geysers of water into the air, then when the waters drain, these manhole covers create huge vortices of draining water at an incredible rate of flow. Anyone standing near would be sucked to their death without a doubt. In January , it happened again, but a little worse again. Then again in March, then in May, then in June, and now it is happening every 10 days or so, each time a little worse. Yesterday it happened while it wasn't even raining here, but apparently raining elsewhere in the city. That really troubled me because the water came up so quickly on a relatively sunny day. Anyone not aware of what was happening who was playing outside, walking in the park, etc, could be in a ton of danger from this. I have called the city, and they sent out two guys from watershed management who literally told me I was overreacting and that when it rains, streets get wet, and that it supposed to happen. I showed pictures of a truck floating down the street and they kinda shrugged and left. I called again and spoke with a supervisor who was equally dismissive. We are at our wit's end, and are selling our house. I hate to leave the area, but I cannot live this way. I have two real questions:
Thank you all in advance. Apologies if this is tagged/posted incorrectly. I'll do my best to adjust to standard. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Aug 2021 11:05 PM PDT Area: Illinois, USA (for accurate advice) So my coworkers played a prank on me. I was going to a "party" (turns out to be fake). The way the address was written was a bit weird, hard to take out. So I got to the street and parked. I deciphered the handwriting and got out to find the house. I go up, knock. Someone is right there but they won't answer. So I leave and get back into my car before trying again. I gave up after seeing someone walk up to my car. Bit odd, do I left before anything happened. Now, turns out some woman is accusing me of burglary. What do I do? I have to show up to the PD and talk to the officer in a few days and prove otherwise. Edit: bit of forgotten context, they showed up to my moms house and talked to her as that's where I sometimes live and is my "primary" place of residence. I haven't spoken to them yet. Edit 2: Can the police tell someone where I work or live? Update: It was my coworkers house. She just added me back on SnapChat She called the cops. I'm not going to message her. She claims I had a headlamp on and tried to open her door when all I did was open the screen door to knock on it [link] [comments] |

Customer credit card chargebacks Posted: 04 Aug 2021 01:44 PM PDT Hi I run a tea and smoothie cafe. We have a website for customers so they can place orders for pick up. I recently had a customer who decided to chargeback over 15 orders ($350 worth) over the span of 2 months. I disputed this and the bank decided in favor of the customer. Since the orders were placed online, there is no fraud protection for the merchant. I have overwhelming evidence that this is a case of "friendly credit card fraud". I have video of the customer's husband picking up the drinks, corresponding social media posts of her and her husband enjoying the drinks. We also email and text the customer for confirmation and pickup. My questions are, should I proceed with small claims court? Can I name both of them as plaintiffs or just the wife (she can say her husband ordered the drinks without her permission)? What if the customer decides to harass my business afterwards (like with more charge backs from their friends or bad reviews)? [link] [comments] |
(California) Roommate/tenant is missing - how long before I can legally find a new one Posted: 04 Aug 2021 12:27 PM PDT Kind of an odd situation here that i'm hoping someone can help provide some information on. Here are the details: I have lived in my current property for about 7 years, and am the only person on the lease with the landlord. The lease is month to month and instead of involving them with every roommate that comes and goes, I am allowed to sublease for the other two bedrooms. The sublease is the exact same as my lease with the landlord - month to month with 30 day notice by either party to vacate. My tenant / roommate has been here for about a year and a half, and has been pretty ideal up until this point. He has always paid his rent on time, if not early, and I have had no complaints whatsoever. He's from Russia and doesn't speak english very well, so our conversations are short and to the point, and our relationship is mostly just transactional. He doesnt have very many friends but the few he does have are also Russian, so I've never had a conversation with any of them ( the few times they have been over ) more than simple pleasantries. He also is gone pretty much every weekend, going on hiking or camping trips. Which brings me to the current issue - he's missing. On the 29th he left to go kayaking and that's the last I have seen or heard from him. His phone is off, and he hasn't paid rent which was due on the 1st. Knowing that he was going outdoors, I gave him a day to get back to me or let me know what was going on (maybe he ran out of batteries on his phone or his trip lasted longer than expected). But yesterday, the 3rd, I knew something was wrong and i filed a missing persons report with the police. I dont know any of his friends nor know of any family he may have here in the states, so I felt like the best thing i could do ( in case there is a serious issue of him being lost or hurt in the wilderness ) was have the authorities try and locate people who might be able to help. With that said, what am i supposed to do in the meantime? How long do i have to wait before finding a new roommate and what am I supposed to do with all his stuff? Sounds kinda heartless as i'm typing this out but at the end of the day I cant keep covering his portion of rent. I dont think he just abandoned all his stuff and left town for good, as he has expensive camping / outdoor gear still here and his room looks normal for the most part. How do i proceed with this going forward and how long do i legally have to wait (worst case scenario) before moving his stuff to the garage and finding a new tenant? I feel like Ive done all i can to try and help with whatever situation he may have gotten into, but im kinda of stressing about covering the expenses of someone else for an undetermined amount of time going forward. Insanely unkept lawn growing over my fence (Louisiana) Posted: 04 Aug 2021 01:06 PM PDT So the property behind mine has weeds growing so big that they are intruding into my backyard. These photos are taken after I cut down everything on my side only a month ago. I was wondering if I have any standing to get the owner to do anything about the yard issue. There are 2 things that make me think that there is nothing I can do about it but I am unsure.
I am fairly certain trying to ask him will be of no help. His entire property is in disarray and full of trash. Last year our street's power went out and it was because he went into his shed and turned on his lights. Somehow his electrical wiring is so bad it blew up a transformer. So I don't think there is any chance he will care about the state of his grass. Is there anything I am able to do to get him to take care of this or am I out of luck? Edit: Here is a link to my city's municipal codes on vegetation if that is helpful. [link] [comments] |
[NYC] Can this Limousine Company Park Their Limos on My Street? Posted: 04 Aug 2021 09:04 AM PDT So I live on a street in NYC (Manhattan) where commercial vehicle parking is not allowed, as is indicated by the signage on our street. From the research I've done, this also means that cars with TL&C license plates can't park there. There is a garage company on my street that offers pay-for-parking to one-time customers as well as monthly parkers. This same company also owns a fleet of about a dozen or so high-end Limos (Not stretched, think high-end Cadillac's, escalades, CT-4's and CT-5's). None of these cars have TL&C license plates, but they probably should since the company offers drivers for hire to pick people up from the airport. This info is on their website. The cars instead contain vanity license plates with the name of the garage company, which is how I know they are their cars. For example, the plate would read "CompanyName68". On any given day, these Limos from this garage company can take anywhere from 3 up to 12 spots on our street. It's very annoying to find parking near my house because this company has 24-hour attendants with the ability to pluck up spots for their rental limousines whenever they become available. I know it's not allowed for TL&C cars to park in non-commercial zones, and I also feel there is a grey area here in that they are able to utilize free street parking in order to make room in their garage for paying customers. They are essentially able to profit off the free street parking, if that makes sense. I want to see if there are any legal avenues to fix this, but basically the only thing I've come up with is to write to our local congressman incessantly and hope they have the will to do something about this. It clearly hurts the residents on our street. We talk to people all the time who can't stand this company who just sucks up all the free street parking, all while they get paying customers into their garage day after day. TL;DR - Garage on my street uses free street parking to keep their fleet of Limos in order to free up room in their garage for paying customers. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 04 Aug 2021 10:03 AM PDT I'm bored out of my mind, and my building has an online bulletin board where you can post stuff. Most people usually just post stuff they're selling, although I saw one person looking for a tennis partner. I've mulled it over for a while, and I thought it might be fun to host a "game night", just card- or board-games. As I was typing a post up, I thought about adding "bring drinks if you want", but then I was like "well, then I probably have to put 21+ in the post". And then I was like "wait, does that mean I would have to card people? like, just to enter my apartment?" Right now, my thinking is "just don't even mention it", that if people show up and are all 21 and over (I'm 33, so I'd feel creepy if anyone young showed up anyway), maybe say "next time we can all bring some drinks". I dunno... this is all very stressful when I actually start thinking about it! EDIT: Sorry, forgot to include location! I'm in Virginia. [link] [comments] |
Marriage license bureaucratic nightmare Posted: 04 Aug 2021 01:41 PM PDT My wife and I got married in Los Angeles (where we also reside) in April. Our officiant mailed in the marriage license, since all the relevant offices are closed due to COVID. Three months later we still had not received our copies of the license from the county clerk, so I called them and was informed that they had no record of receiving the license. The officiant definitely sent it in (she even took a picture of herself dropping it in the mail), so we can presume it was lost in the mail or somewhere in the clerk's office. The person I spoke to at the clerk's office said the next step was to send me an application for a duplicate license, and that I should expect it within a week. After two weeks without receiving the application, I called them back and was told (surprise!) that they had no record of the previous conversation or of any application being sent out. The person I spoke with said she would talk to her supervisor and get back to me, but for obvious reasons I'm skeptical this will work out. The county has no plans to reopen for in-person business any time soon, so it seems that we're stuck in remote bureaucratic hell for the time being. So here's my question: what if we just get married again, say in a courthouse, somewhere which is open to in-person business? We're actually moving to Chicago in a month, so that would be a natural place. Is there anything illegal about getting married twice if the first marriage was never legally finalized? Would that open us up to any future issues? To reiterate the status, we requested a marriage license, filled it out, had it signed by the officiant, etc. but the county claims to have never received it. I would also welcome any other recommendations for resolving this nightmare. [link] [comments] |
$15,000 mysteriously entered my Robinhood account Posted: 04 Aug 2021 02:13 PM PDT (California) I have a Robinhood account that I rarely use. I had next to nothing in it for a while until I saw that today a new bank account (unknown to me) had been added to my Robinhood account and a $15k deposit had been initiated INTO my Robinhood account from this new bank account. It should be noted that I seem to be a victim of identity theft since just two weeks ago multiple $100 charges posted on my bank account from "Money Lion" which I flagged as fraud and had reversed. This is relevant because I would otherwise play this off as a mistake on Robinhood's servers and would notify them of it. But right now I can't seem to understand why someone would load money into my Robinhood account. I immediately changed my passwords to pretty much everything I could think of. This also means whoever initiated the deposit most likely doesn't have access to my account now. So if a fraudster did this, why would they do it? And more importantly, can I legally keep this money? I have a gut feeling that if someone loses $15k to me, I'm gonna have some repercussions. But I don't know what kind of legal case a fraudster could make against me if I kept the money ("uh, your honor, I was hacking his accounts and then he took my money!"). Should I just hold onto the money for a long period of time to be sure, is there a statute of limitations for this sort of thing? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Aug 2021 02:11 PM PDT My significant other received a letter from an attorneys' office offering her legal representation as she has been named as a defendant in an auto tort case. This was the first time she became aware of this case and has no idea why she would be included as a defendant. The case is listed as Plaintiff vs My SO's Company and there are three defendants listed on circuit court case documentation; her company, herself, and a part-time employee at my SO's company. She has not worked with the other individual listed as a defendant. She has not been involved in any motor vehicle incidents while on the job. She has not interacted with any of the plaintiffs listed on the court documents. She was not notified by her company that she was being named as a defendant in any case. I am concerned that her company has thrown her name to the plaintiff as employee names are not publicly available. I am also concerned that her company may be negligent in the handling of this case and do not know what potential repercussions there may be if her company loses the case with her listed as a defendant. She has not received any contact from her company's HR but I am wondering if she should seek her own legal representation to protect herself from her company as it appears they may have incorrectly (or negligently/maliciously) named her in this case. Any advice at what steps we should take to protect my SO would be very much appreciated. Also if this is a non-issue I would appreciate alternative perspectives as neither of us has been involved in a civil case before. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Is the considered assault? (Virginia) Posted: 04 Aug 2021 12:38 PM PDT Edit: Title was meant to say "Is this considered assault?" Before I start, yes I went to the police and reported it. But, Two days ago, I answered the door and this guy was asking me questions. He asked if there was a lost dog around, and after I said "no" he paused for a second. I got a little suspicious of what he was trying to do, but after that he proceeded to open my door, went half way in my house, and put his hands on both my shoulders tightly. I was terrified. I thought he was either going to kidnap me or sexual assault me. It only lasted for 3 seconds but after wards he said "are you okay?" and stopped and said "don't open the door next time." I don't know what his true intention was but it definitely wasn't good. After he said that he immediately left and sped down my driveway. I'm wondering if the police, if they find him, could they charge him with breaking and entering or assault (or both)? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Aug 2021 01:35 PM PDT My ex partner (unmarried) and I started IVF together. Halfway through the process he decided he did not want to parent with me and donated "custody" of the embryos to me to do as I wish with them. We signed embryo ownership paperwork at the IVF clinic but never pursued an embryo custody arrangement under California law. I am now 5 months pregnant and we are discussing the options. He is willing to either relinquish parental rights, or co-parent, depending on what we decide. He wishes to provide support for the Childs sake, whatever that means. What are my rights and the implications of either arrangement in terms of child support and custody (future battles)? For context, we live in CA, however, he has no interest in staying here long term and would like to move back to the East Coast. We are unmarried and share no assets, however, I have been on his insurance (it's supported IVF and this pregnancy). All other financial burden of this pregnancy I have shouldered. I do not plan to give the child his last name or include him on the birth certificate. I was told given these circumstances it will be impossible for him to seek substantial (30% or greater) custody while living on the East Coast, that he can only obtain significant custody (50-50) if he remains here in CA. I am comfortable with once a year visits to the East Coast but obviously not moving my child to him 50% of the time. I would also like him to be here for the birth and support me through pregnancy if that's what we agree on, however, I'm curious to whether that opens up the possibility for him to sue me for substantial custody in the future. Posted: 04 Aug 2021 01:31 PM PDT So my dad is extremely abusive and manipulative. I had car issues a couple years ago and gave him money to go get my new car for me while I was at work and he put his name on the title and said it was because I "wasn't responsible" when I was working 16 hour shifts daily in healthcare and paying all my bills and never doing much of anything. I have my own insurance that I pay, I've kept up on the maintenance. I'm currently living in my car due to some unforeseen events but I am still paying my insurance and phone bill. My name is also on the cars title. Anyway, I want his name off the title of my car because he holds everything over my head and he's telling me my car needs to be in his driveway by tonight because he's having an episode. Can he legally do this? Do I have to take the car back to him? Is there something I can do? he's threatening to call the cops on me and I'm anxious. I live in missouri, USA [link] [comments] |
