Robinhood’s stock is spiking, but this is the time for YOU to be careful

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 06:54 AM PDT

The Robinhood stock has recently absolutely exploded.

Despite this buzz, please be careful. This spike isn't sustainable and some people wil be left holding the bag. This is the classic FOMO move, and those who are too greedy, will take losses.

You can participate in this, but remember this if anything from this:

Invest what you're willing to lose. Don't get too excited and don't drop money that you aren't ready to lose.

    That's all. Stay safe.

You don’t own Chinese company stocks when you buy Chinese company shares.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 03:14 PM PDT

This might be a good time to write about this since there is a major sell off and lot of you might think you can buy Chinese stocks for a low price. Cramer might say whatever but it's your job to research into the stock you buy.

You don't actually own the stock of the Chinese company shares that are bought via American or any other world exchanges. CCP laws do not allow foreigners to own shares in a Chinese entity. You actually own shares of a shell company located in the Cayman Islands that has the same name as the Chinese stock you own. This shell company has certain economic agreements with the Chinese company so that the share holders of the shell company get economic benefits. You can read more in the below link.

This kind of a structure leads to a lot of issues. One of them is low blowing American investors after the Chinese companies becomes profitable. Basically Chinese companies are listed in the US and use US investors capital to become profitable and then are taken private at a low price before re-listing in China for a far higher price.

Then there are risks of the CCP out right invalidating your shell company shares if CCP considers your shares as foreign ownership. This depends on how the shell company shares are related to the Chinese company. Most of the shell companies are shown as a subsidiary of the Chinese company. So the CCP can consider owning shares of a shell company of a Chinese company subsidiary as foreign ownership and invalidate those shares. The below Bloomberg link has more about this as well.

And then there are accounting issues. The standards of listed Chinese and American company accounting requirements are different. We already have an example for this - luckin coffee.

Private companies added 330,000 jobs in July, according to ADP, far short of the 653,000 estimate

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 05:27 AM PDT

Job creation at private companies tumbled in July as fears mounted over the spreading coronavirus delta variant, payroll processing firm ADP reported Wednesday.

Employers added 330,000 positions for the month, a sharp deceleration from the downwardly revised 680,000 in June and well below the 653,000 Dow Jones estimate. June's final total fell from the initial estimate of 692,000.

July's job growth was also the smallest gain since February.

"The labor market recovery continues to exhibit uneven progress, but progress nonetheless," said Nela Richardson, chief economist at ADP. "July payroll data reports a marked slowdown from the second quarter pace in jobs growth."

Betting against 20+ year treasury bonds is a win-win

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 10:03 AM PDT

I believe shorting 20+ year treasury bonds are a win-win. I also believe that the bond market can only proceed forward in one of two ways.

1: The Federal Reserve raises interest rates, and bonds prices come back to earth. Interest rates are about as low as they can reasonably go, therefore the only way they can truly move going forward is either up or to stagnate.

2: The Federal Reserve chooses to stagnate interest rates and keep them low, this allows inflation to grow and the inflation is what brings treasury bond prices down.

And if the Federal Reserve chooses to somehow lower the already incredibly low interest rates, then that will simply speed up inflation rates which would ultimately also bring bond prices down. This would also likely lead to them raising the interest rates sooner down the road.

Essentially, no matter what happens moving forward, bond prices will come down.

The good news is that historically, this exact scenario has play out a bunch of different times, meaning there are already a few inversed and leveraged 20+ year bond ETFs we can play with to gain some exposure. A couple of things to be aware of is that this is a long term play. I don't expect the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates until the unemployment rate returns to close to what it was prior to the pandemic. This could take potentially until the 1st or 2nd quarter of 2022. Powell himself said that the Reserve would raise rates mid 2023 at the latest. Now we're certainly on track to see rates increase much sooner than mid 2023, but please plan your positions accordingly if you do partake.

There is also the potential that the country shuts down for a second time due the Covid Variants. If that is the case then the Federal Reserve won't do anything, and we will have to lean on the growing inflation rates to drive down treasury bond prices.

Positions: Long $TMV Shares, Long $TBT 1/20/23 Options

Now at the price point I did not expect until the very end of the year if not 2022. I want to hold this stock long as I got in at around 70 but my goodness this meteoric rise has to be too good to be true in the midst of a worldwide chip shortage.

Are we thinking this is for real and it's just going to keep going or is a sharp and sudden stagnation imminent? Rising by the likes of ten dollars a day is surely not going to continue right?!?!

CVS Health boosts pay, cuts education requirements as retailers compete for workers

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 07:01 AM PDT

    https://www.cnbc.com/2021/08/04/cvs-health-raises-wages-cuts-education-requirements-amid-labor-shortage.html

CVS Health said it is raising wages for employees and eliminating education requirements for job candidates as it competes for workers.

Retailers and restaurants have struggled to fill jobs, even as Covid-19 vaccination rates rise and federal unemployment benefits end in many states.

The company said it also opened two training and recruitment centers in Pennsylvania.

This is a good news as now many companies are having difficulty to hire workers. By implementing these new policy, CVS should be able to resolve the labor shortage issue. The stock is only trading around pe of 15 with a dividend yield of 2.38%, it is still attractive to buy.

Scotts Miracle-Gro beats expectations and announces $65 million acquisition

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 01:05 PM PDT

SMG reported earnings that beat expectations and are up from a year ago; they also announced the acquisition of Santa Cruz, Calif.-based HydroLogic Purification Systems in a $65 million deal that includes business assets and operations. The acquisition is expected to generate $20 million in annualized sales. For the full-year, Scotts is guiding for sales growth of 17% to 19%.

Despite this upbeat news, the stock is crashing even further today. SMG is down double digits % YTD and approximately 7% on the day.

What gives? I was surprised when SMG broke the $200 support line in June, and now it's slumped even further. Make it make sense!

Here is a Market Recap for today Wednesday, August 4, 2021

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 02:06 PM PDT

    PsychoMarket Recap - Wednesday, August 4, 2021

Today was another choppy day, with stocks ending the day mixed, with the Nasdaq (QQQ) climbing 0.14% while the S&P 500 (SPY) and Dow Jones (DIA) fell 0.48% and 0.89% respectively. The Russell 2000 (IWM), which tracks the performance of small-cap stocks, fell 1.25%. It seems market participants were disappointed by a report from ADP, a leading employment services company, which estimated that private employers added half the expected amount of jobs in July. This sets a negative backdrop for the official July Jobs Report, set to be released this Friday.

ADP, a leading payroll and human services software company, released its July 2021 Employment Report, which estimated that private employers added only 330,000 jobs in July, less than half the 690,000 gain expected by economists. While ADP's report isn't 100% accurate, it's usually fairly close and sets a negative backdrop for the official July Job Report on Friday. ADP's report shows that the labor market imbalances stemming from the coronavirus pandemic remain. Moreover, with concerns surrounding the Delta variant increasing, that could be a relatively new factor adding more pressure. Here is the entire report: https://adpemploymentreport.com/

Concerns surrounding the highly contagious coronavirus Delta variant continue to rise, with Florida emerging as the US' new epicenter for the disease. Cases in Florida have jumped dramatically, going from 2432 on July 1 to 38,776 on July 30 and have so far had three consecutive days of record infections. Thankfully, however, despite the surge in cases, the death rate has so far remained stable and relatively low, a sign that the vaccines are very effective at preventing hospitalizations and serious death.

So far, 59% of the companies in the S&P 500 (SPY) have reported Q2 earnings, with 88% of these beating analyst expectations, according to FactSet. This quarter is shaping up to be another record-breaking one, with corporate earnings growth rate expected to accelerate 85%, which would be the biggest jump since the Q4 2009.

However, it is important to note that, despite beating earnings expectations, a number of these companies have pulled back, with tepid outlooks moving forward overshadowing strong results. Moving forward, given that most companies have so far exceeded pre-pandemic levels and the current quarter has an easy comparison to last year, expectations for growth are inevitably going to moderate. This said, I think the pullback in some stocks following earnings is an overreaction.

    Highlights

    • Shares of Lyft (LYFT) fell roughly 10% despite posting its first profitable quarter. Earnings are very weird.
    • Shares of GM slipped 8% after posting earnings.
    • Shares of NovaVax (NVAX) gapped up roughly 20$ after the company announced an agreement with the EU to sell up to 200 million COVID vaccines.
    • Shares of some Chinese companies somewhat after pulling back yesterday following signaling that the CCP may be targeting video game companies next as the regulatory crackdown on tech stocks continues. Yesterday, shares of Tencent (TCEHY) and other tech stocks fell after a state-media called video games "spiritual opium". This prompted Tencent to say it will limit gaming time for minors and may even ban those under 12 from its platform.
    • Shares of Robinhood (HOOD) gapped up again today, rising roughly 50% today.
    • Federal Reserve Vice Chair Richard Clarida said Wednesday the central bank is still on track to begin raising rates off their current near-zero levels in 2023, as long as the economic recovery remains on its current trajectory. He said "While, as Chair Powell indicated last week, we are clearly a ways away from considering raising interest rates and this is certainly not something on the radar screen right now, if the outlook for inflation and outlook for unemployment I summarized earlier turn out to be the actual outcomes for inflation and unemployment realized over the forecast horizon, then I believe that these three necessary conditions for raising the target range for the federal funds rate will have been met by year-end 2022."
    • **Please note that current stock price was written during the session and may not reflect closing prices*\*
    • Akami Technologies (AKAM) with two target raises. Stock currently around $112
      • Piper Sandler from $130 to $132 at Overweight

      • Barclays from $196 to $216 at Overweight
      • Morgan Stanley from $224 to $234
    • Arista Networks (ANET) target raised by Argus from $360 to $440 at Buy. Stock currently around $382
    • AstraZeneca (AZN) target raised by SVB Leerink from $63 to $69 at Outperform. Stock currently around $57
    • Caesars Entertainment (CZR) with two target raises. Stock currently around $85
      • Morgan Stanley from $124 to $127 at Overweight

    • MicroChip Technology (MCHP) with a host of target raises. Consensus price target $190 at Buy. Stock currently around $148
    • Nvidia (NVDA) target raised by Rosenblatt Securities from $200 to $250 at Buy. Stock currently around $202
    • NXP Semiconductors (NXPI) with a host of target raises. Consensus price target $240 at Outperform. Stock currently around $212
    • SolarEdge Technologies (SEDG) target raised by Susquehanna from $325 to $350 at Outperform. Stock currently around $292
    • Square (SQ) target raised by Barclays from $340 to $345 at Overweight. Stock currently around $266

Any Cybersecurity stocks that are yet to breakout and did not explode?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 03:00 AM PDT

As title suggests, looking into CS sector and wrapping my thoughts around NET, Fortinet, Crowdstrike, companies like that. But I already own some of NET, sadly it is the only CS sector stock and takes only 5% of my portfolio. Looking to increase to around 10%-12,5% as I heavily believe in long-term vitality. However, all of these already seem to have ran up so high past these 6 months - any alternatives? Also looking at Palo Alto N.

PSA: Missinformation about Chinese Stocks floating about everywhere. Do your own research!

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 01:17 AM PDT

I have been fighting to correct the missinformation in the last week in the comments but I decided a dedicated thread could be useful for Investors.

Lets look at Alibaba as an example to explain what I mean. You can find all this information on their 20-F. This is my source.

    ADR vs HK shares

The BABA ADR can be exchanged 1:8 for the HK stock for ALIBABA Holding. There is no substantial risk when it comes to ADR vs the HK stock. If BABA gets delisted in NYSE then you can still convert them to HK shares.

    ADR vs VIE

Alibaba Holding directly ownes all the non Chinese parts of ALIBABA. They are also directly owning some of the chinese parts of ALIBABA. The CCP only restricts foreign investments into certain sectors. In all other sectors foreigners can and do have direct ownership rights. There are three categories of sectors. Sectors in which foreign investers can invest freely. Sectors in which foreign investors can hold no more then 50% of total equity. And sectors in which foreign investors can not hold any equity.

Only a part of Alibaba is not directly or indirectly owned by Alibaba Holdings. For this part they have the VIE contracts. These contracts say that Alibaba Holdings has control over the profits of these Companys and can replace the CEO. Although it is not clear if the contract is enforceable under chinese LAW (grey area).

    https://otp.investis.com/clients/us/alibaba/SEC/sec-show.aspx?Type=html&FilingId=15112567&Cik=0001577552

For an overview open the link i pasted and search for "C. Organizational Structure"

The following parts of ALIBABA are not Part of ALIBABA Holdings and have a VIE contract instead:

    -Zhejiang Taobao Network Co Ltd

    -Zhejiang Tmal Network Co Ltd

    -Alibaba Cloud Computing Ltd

    -Youku Information Technology Co Ltd

These parts currently make less then 50% of total revenue.

    Final Thoughts

I find it very ironic how many people post this wrong/incomplete information in an effort to educate investors but they actually do the opposite. It is possible that my information is also not correct. I am not an expert but I did my best to actually research this. The other folks that talk about this just repeat what they heard somewhere on youtube or on reddit.

Bid, Ask, After Hours Price Question

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 01:58 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I can't post an image for some reason here, so I'll do my best to ask. I'm not invested in AEO but am just using their stock as an example about bid, ask, and after hours pricing.

At 4:54PM EDT, AEO stock was up 0.13 cents at 32.79 in after hours trading. The bid is 32.69x800 and the ask is 32.70x800. If the stock is up to 32.79 from 32.66 in after hours, why is the bid at 32.69 and the ask at 32.70?

This apparent discrepancy isn't just with AEO but with every stock I check. Some times the discrepancy between after hours price with the bid/ask is even wilder.

Wondering what your guys thoughts are, obviously nobody knows the right move, just opening a discussion.

I think we're gonna see a 8-10% move in either direction honestly. If they have a great quarter, it'll show that they're not just a pandemic driven stock/company. If they have a poor or flat one, then that's not so great. I'm also wondering if the current Delta covid stuff will be a factor in the short term future outlook.

I've got about 20 shares @ $181, trying to decide how much I keep and how much I take profits on.

Question about trade halting and massive sudden increases.

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 09:04 AM PDT

Want to preface this by first saying that I'm still very new to all this, and this is just for me to learn.

I was reading elsewhere on this subreddit about trade halts and how they are enforced when a stock goes +/- 10% within 5 minutes. Stock halting to my knowledge is the stoppage of trading of that stock, correct? Then how do stocks for example like $BSYI (beyond spring inc) sky rocket 168% within minutes of the open market?

If this is a dumb question, please correct me first.

CVS beats earnings and raises guidance.

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 04:39 AM PDT

Aug 4 (Reuters) - CVS Health Corp raised its annual earnings forecast, after it reported a quarterly profit on Wednesday that beat analysts' estimates, helped by higher prescription drug sales, COVID-19 testing and vaccinations at its pharmacies and clinics.

With nearly half of all Americans fully vaccinated, demand for prescription drugs and over-the-counter products at the company's pharmacies recovered from the declines seen in previous quarters during the height of the pandemic.

CVS Health raised its 2021 adjusted profit per share outlook to between $7.70 and $7.80, from $7.56 to $7.68, after it reported an 11.1% increase in quarterly revenue to $72.6 billion.

The company, however, warned of COVID-19 vaccinations to slow in the second half of the year, and medical costs to increase modestly at its health insurance unit Aetna.

Health insurers saw lower medical costs during the initial phase of the pandemic, as people deferred elective medical procedures, however, widespread vaccinations have led to demand for non-COVID healthcare services normalizing.

CVS said its medical benefit ratio (MBR), or the percentage of premiums paid for medical services, for the second quarter rose to 84.1% from 70.3%. A lower MBR is better for health insurers as it signals a tight rein on medical costs.

On an adjusted basis, CVS earned $2.42 per share, beating estimates of $2.06 per share, according to Refinitiv IBES data.

A trailing stop which does not engage until a certain price is passed?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 12:31 PM PDT

So recently I've started dabbling in IPO's and I got lucky today with Robinhood's shares nearly reaching double what I paid on Friday.

However for future IPO's I am wondering if there is a way to set up a "trigger" which "arms" a trailing stop.

I.E. Say I buy a stock for 20 dollars, and I'd like a trailing stop that will auto sell should it fall 5%

Yet I don't want that trailing stop to engage until it passes say 35 dollars. Is there a way to do this?

Any advice would be most appreciated, thank you.

Thoughts on a career from trading?

Thoughts on what it takes to make a career off trading?

As the title states, I'm curious to hear thoughts from many people that either currently trade for a living, or are pursuing trading as a career as I currently am.

I mostly trade options and in the last few weeks stepped away from trading after blowing up my account to establish a strategy and a more thorough understanding of the stock market in general. Trying to read charts and such I find difficult although I need to dedicate more time to learning that craft. But ultimately I'm curious to hear any advice to start a career out of trading.

And yes, I understand how insanely difficult this is. But it's not impossible, and it takes years of practice. And I too want to be able to do this one day as I'm sure we all would. Thanks in advance!!

Somewhat old news, but still interesting...

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 09:56 AM PDT

This is somewhat old news, but it's the first I have heard about it, and it may allow GM to catch back up to ford...

    https://www.caranddriver.com/features/a36877532/general-motors-ev-ultium-battery-electric-future/

They are called Ultium batteries, and have longer battery lives and can provide significantly greater range than existing lithium batteries. GM expects to have several car models by 2025 which feature them.

Note I was led to information about ultium batteries by a scammer ad that boasted their non-existant product was several times better than ultium batteries. They made the fundamental scammer error, however, of mentioning a legitimate product in their scam ad... leading smart people to search for the *real* product 😎

    Edit: Forgot to put flair...

I've been relying on the existence of a pre-market gap up as evidence that there is probably some kind of news catalyst moving a stock's prices upward, but what's a good source to go to so I can learn ahead of time what stocks to look at and what news has just come out or is about to come out? It would be nice to show up to the gap up parties sooner.
