Yelp score in 2021 small business

    Yelp score in 2021

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 04:04 PM PDT

I'm a small business owner, I have owned the business for about 5.5 years and have a 1-star rating on Yelp due to ONE 1-star review (reviewer never stepped foot in store, was upset when we had to revoke an online coupon code due to manufacturer policy). I can see from my Yelp business account that there are 14 positive reviews that have not been allowed. Also, I have an organic 4.9 on google.

Is there anything I can do?

Big problem, hope you can help.

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 08:32 AM PDT

I'll try to make this quick but my particular industry that I was finally doing really good in, in terms of business, has been brought to its knees by this pandemic.

This pandemic and the rules and new norms created by it, are not going away in my opinion. (It would be pointless to debate this so let's just assume I'm right.)

So, I've developed a plan and have been working on quickly exiting my current industry with a completely different industry in terms of product.

I bring in just shy of 3 million in revenue with my current business and have a much larger ad budget now than when I started my first business so I think I can do it and do it with speed.

The problem is and as fellow entrepreneurs you know that I am the marketing guy, SEO guy, web design guy, shipping and receiver, purchasing agent, janitor, social media guy, you name it, I do it all by myself.

The one thing I am NOT, know matter WHAT I do or how hard I TRY, is I am not an accountant/data/math guy.

So my question is ultimately, "how can I set up and track my cost per conversion (conversion = sale) in such a way that is easily indexable and easy to understand."

In my opinion, the most important thing to know for an e-commerce business entity is the cost per conversion as well as somethings like LTV, traffic source et cetera, from ad campaigns on FB, Google, Bing, etc.

I have tried Google Analytics and a few standard ecom platforms (woo, wix, shopify) proprietary data dashboards and I don't find them very easy or accurate to use.

Surely, there has to be a way or platform to easily and accurately deduce these data points?

Thanks for any help you may offer.

Investing business profits vs personal ones?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 02:42 PM PDT

Hey all, this is a dumb question, but as a business owner (LLC set up as S-corp with myself as the sole employee), I'm aware of the distinction between company money and personal money.

I pay myself a "reasonable salary" as defined by IRS rules, which means that my company makes money, it pays the payroll taxes on it, and what's left becomes my salary/personal money. I'm investing that.

My question is: what do I need to do, or be aware of, regarding investing the company's leftover profits, rather than it just sitting in a bank account? Are there any gotchas I should be aware of?

    S Corp shareholder not employee

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 09:25 PM PDT

I'm about to own an S Corp business. I have a full manager in place and do not plan to work. Do I still have to take the mandatory owner employee salary per s Corp rules? I'm not being an employee since I have a manager. So therefore I can take 100% distributions and not pay my self employment tax correct? Obvisouly I'll be working minimal or helping out if I need to if someone calls off or doing some minor managerial stuff if my manager struggles but nothing crazy. This would be considered passive s Corp correct?

Anyone get threatening email from Ready Capital to collect balance?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 02:55 AM PDT

I received a qualified PPP loan from ready capital for the second round. Just received email from Ready Capital that states I have balance ( does not say how much or what for) and they will debit payments of 200 from my business checking account ending in xxxx. I googled the sender and seems he works for Ready Capital and the checking account info is correct. Has anyone had this happen? Why would I owe them money?

    Open Source Business Software

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 11:03 PM PDT

I'm a pretty big fan of free things and I'm familiar with the reasons why most free things are free.

I use Sourceforge and Github a lot for personal software and being a new business owner, I'm trying to curb all I can to spend on my inventory.

My question is, would YOU feel comfortable trusting some of the "secure" Point of Sale or other sensitive data systems with customer information?

    Salon software suggestions?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 08:14 PM PDT

    Hey everyone,

I'm a salon owner based in Seattle. I've recently noticed a huge influx of customers at my salon and it's been a very busy week for me. I'm not able to handle both servicing and taking appointments. Is there any kind of software that will help me take bookings automatically? I don't want to lose customers during peak hours. It would be great if you guys can suggest some softwares :)

Taxes for a single-member llc? Am I correct in thinking it is 15.3% on profits?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 10:24 PM PDT

    Hey all,

I guess I'm a bit confused as to why my personal tax at my job is more like 23% but for everything I've researched online tonight I think I can expect to pay 15.3% tax of my single member llc on profits?

Does that sound right? I just don't want to get wrecked by a huge tax bill. We've done about 3k gross rev so far

Best place to incorporate an LLC? I mostly only know about Delaware.

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 09:56 PM PDT

I'm in California, but have heard that LLC in CA has a $5k minimum tax and doesn't do much to protect me.

I've only heard of Montana as well as a good place to form an LLC.

Looking for the cheapest state to form a LLC, and one that hopefully has the "best" protections.

Any guidance or resources you guys can link me to to learn more?

Small Business and can't afford a CFO?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 09:49 PM PDT

I've been thinking on this for some time and wanted to get some input from the group.

I know a large portion of small businesses do not have a CFO even an in house Accountant to give financial direction to the company. I know there are services that so outsourced bookkeeping, outsourced CFO, and financial/accounting consulting.

Q: what needs to you have as small businesses when it comes to accounting, financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, etc. that you are having trouble solving in an affordable way?

For context, I'm a Certified Management Accountant and currently budgeting and forecasting a $1b P&L at a large retailer. Looking for ideas of services I could provide small businesses as a side hustle and eventual exit from big corporate.

I'm starting a business but don't know what industry/designation my business is.

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 12:13 AM PDT

Does someone (city/state/fed) designate what my business is or am I "supposed to know" when filling out forms. My business is a Nerf playground. Kids rent blasters and play for blocks of time. I originally thought it would be fitness/entertainment but online searches seem to point me to retail service. (Salons keep getting mentioned)

I honestly don't care about the designation, BUT, a location I want to use requires that the location be filled by a "retail" business (as per the agreement made with the neighboring chain store). Do I fit the requirements for Retail Service or do I actually have to have product to sell as well? Is Retail Service the same as just Retail? Any help is appreciated.

Is there/Have you found a better time of day/week to post job availabilities? We're consistently coming up dry in this landscape.

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 07:41 PM PDT

I was just wondering if anyone had any insights as to whether they've found some better times to post job postings using the main sites and through other channels. We're down two people and can't find anyone to even apply or come in for an interview, never mind take the position. Entry level pay is 2x industry standard and 3x minimum wage in a liberal state, and even with all that and cash tips it's apparently not enough compensation. I literally just need warm bodies and can't find any that are willing. I know we're all trying to fill openings but this is ridiculous... I'm just wondering if there's a way I can optimize my hiring ads so that they stand out a bit more on Indeed/Zip/etc.

Job Titles for Entry-Level Admin Role in Small Tech Biz?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 03:13 PM PDT

I've been grappling with how to assign a title to a "sales coordinator" or "sales administrator" position that's attractive to entry-level eg a recent grad. A step past "Intern" but still very junior.

The job is mostly checking a CRM, organizing documents, scheduling things, research, answering phone calls etc. But needs to be in-house since they'd be handling proprietary stuff. We're a 15 person company with an un-sexy name but we work in a tech vertical niche that's very hot right now, especially with younger people.

Looking for entry-level because the so-called "experienced" people I've interviewed into this role have really not seen eye-to-eye on many things, or their baseline skills and knowledge in our field are unfortunately way off the mark. I've given up finding an experienced person and I'd really prefer to train someone into this role from the ground up.

I've noticed the current titles attract mostly these people who are a bit further into their career. And recent grads, especially those who have a degree and are ambitious and dedicated to their work, they want sexy titles or FAANG or a VC backed startup on the resume. Our business isn't crazy sexy but it is a killer opportunity for someone who wants to get into our industry (ecommerce tech) and build knowledge.

Folks who have successfully staffed entry-level roles recently, what titles are you seeing being attractive to recent grads these days?

    Just starting up, and well..

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 10:31 PM PDT

So my area was hiit pretty heavy with the "free money" going to people who never worked for anything except other people's property and being in wait for my property development, I'm given a few minutes to go over a few scenarios I'm used to seeing as an employee rather than an owner.

I apologize for my lack of knowledge in business to those who are easily pained but due to health reasons, I had no choice but to make a life change and rather than switch up on everything I know and hand over my pride to pick your TAX PAYER pocket, I'll put my all in and go it alone.. sink or swim, I'm gonna try instead of die..

I watch my fiance manage the chain she's employed through and it's disgusting to watch her struggle. I live in Kentucky, if this has any relevance, and my home-based business is going to have to find a brick and mortar home of its own. In order to really find any reasonable crew and not hemorrhage funds, could it be possible to implement an activity based compensation pay model and balance employee satisfaction and my business growth?

A part of my company's sales is donated to active charities and effective drug rehabilitation programs, and it's coming by way of tobacco and tobacco related novelty products. You'd be amazed at how well it's been received, and even more astonished by the local talent offering free appearance for mutual exposure.

I've got a handful of friends who have been "helping out" (smoking all my herb while I work my ass off building my company, but it IS mine), but they're not doing anything 'productive'. I made a list of jobs to perform and calculated my time up doing these same mediocre to average tasks and designed a pay chart.. given the fact that most of the people locally are a notch or several below the national average for work ethic, is this kindergarten type sticker chart a legit way to pay? As long as one gets paid their actual worth, right?

The ABC, good idea for at least a probationary period or nah?

What's the benefits of buying a shelf corp?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 06:12 PM PDT

I'm in the midst of building business credit. Someone told me that I should have bought a shelf corp to build with, because the banks are not going to give me a loan with a new business.

However, all shelf corps got to offer is the age right??? But what good is the AGE, when the business have no tax returns, no revenue, and no business history. I'm sure the bank can give a squat about a 10 year old business that never made money right????? Am I right or is there any hidden gems behind the shelf corps?

    Does this plan sound ethical?

Plan A: Start my own business from scratch, get a couple net 30's, get a secured business credit card, and finance my car with my business credit ( I will co-sign as a guarantor). And start building credit with these tradelines and then within the next 9 months.

My business is a misc type business. I sell cleaning supplies, but the business itself it a courier business where I deliver car parts to mechanics. The business isn't generating MUCH money as of yet, I'm still in talks with my first courier account. However, I am selling cleaning supplies to a cleaning company and I'm profiting about $1,000 a month with one cleaning contractor who has a small cleaning contract and only need little supplies as of now.

However, I was thinking about taking this $10,000 that I have in my savings and buy supplies from myself to clean my house and my leasing office. I will make weekly deposits of $2,500.. totaling $10,000 monthly... at the end of each month, I'll withdraw that same $10,000 and repeat. I'll do this to build revenue to my business until it starts booming which should be soon.

Also, I'll continue to build my credit and then I'll try to get a $50,000 to buy two more cargo vans for my courier business + pay for some marketing.

    OR

Should I buy a shelf corp? I'm trying to get start up funding.

E-sign software that does calculations and shows up a pop-up consent box when agreement is signed?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 05:59 PM PDT

    Hi All,

I have a service-based business. I'm searching for an E-sign solution that does 2 simple things:

    1. Enables the signer to select from multiple options. For example, if they select a 1YR agreement, it's $1000 and $500 setup fee. If they select a 2YR it's $750 and zero setup fee. I believe this feature may be called conditional or calculation.

    2. When they sign the SOW (statement of work) a Terms and Conditions box pops up. They have to click to agree - in other words, they have to check a box to agree to the Ts&Cs and for the SOW to be executed.

I've been searching high and low - Docusign, Pandadoc, Signnow, etc. No one has these features.

Does anyone know of a solution that has these 2 features? Thanks!

Help to find remote social media work

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 09:44 PM PDT

I am an engineering graduate and light designer from India. Due to the covid situation, the event industry here in India has been shut. This was when I shifted my focus to Social media and digital marketing. I got lucky to work with a few local businesses and help them set up and run their social media channels and campaigns. The economy is still down and receiving payments from small businesses is still difficult, which was I am now considering working with a few clients outside of India.

So I am looking for anyone that can help me understand:

    - The workflow of working remotely with clients abroad

    - The standard charges ( For social media management, content creation, etc.)

    - Payment gateways to receive international payments

    - Anything else to keep in mind or your experiences.

    Thank you in advance!

Anyone here start their own business in something IT related?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 11:51 AM PDT

I've only been working in IT for 3 years so I don't think I'm qualified For consulting. I have every CompTIA cert except for cloud and casp but I'm sure I could get cloud if I wanted to. I already have azure 900 and studying for az104 but that's been an on and off thing so I probably won't even get it for a year.

I like process automation a lot with powershell and ansible but haven't been exposed to enough live environments to consider myself useful. I automated processes at my current help desk job but those were made with 0 experience so I don't think they're anything significant. I wasn't hired as an automation engineer I was a level one help desk employee who was just tired of doing everything manually.

Regarding ansible, I just deployed it on my Homelab to automate Apache and nginx deployments, update all my VMs, re generate and deploy ssh keys and Renew ssl certs for the web servers I'm hosting and scrub default configs from ssh. I've never used it in a work environment.

    github If interested.

I've made websites for friends but by make I mean download a free template and put their images / text on it instead then I just buy a domain name and host it on aws. I Don't even do anything with SEO. Never set up a wordpress site I just download Apache and copy the website to it. There's 13 year olds who can run laps around me in terms of development so why would I be hired over them?

I feel like if I want my own business it needs to be in IT since I spend 99% of my time doing something IT related. I'm a terrible artist so digital art wouldn't be an option. I did a Blender tutorial once 10 years ago so 3D modeling isn't happening. I work 8-5 m-f for 25 an hour at an MSP already so being a virtual assistant for $16 an hour 6 hours a week isn't really an option. The only thing I know is IT but like I said I'm average so my marketability doesn't seem there. Tutoring is out too since my answer to everything is google it.

Maybe I'm just doubting myself. I just want to do something where I can work whenever I want and be my own boss.

Checklist/customer report software for solo handyman type business?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 04:37 PM PDT

I have a solo business doing equipment repair and maintenance for fitness centers. I'm trying to streamline my process, and looking for a software solution.

Basically, I need to be able to build a checklist for myself while at a job, picking from a pool of equipment types that will differ dramatically from location to location, each having a spot for its location and serial number and having a list of its parts for me to run through inspection/repair of (preferably with a drop down for "no issues" and a notes field if there are issues).

Where I am running into issues is that I also need to be able to generate reports for my customers to send with their invoices.

The software solutions I'm trying (Google sheets, breezeworks, airtable, and a handful of others) all seem to severely fall down on this in one way or another. Either they have no customer facing functionality or they organize their checklists in a manner that doesn't work with my needs.

Does anyone have any suggestions for software that might fit the bill?
