I’m at fault but the other person won’t give me her insurance information

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 10:56 AM PDT

    Hello,

I was backing out of a parking space yesterday and didn't see a car. I sent her pictures of my drivers license, registration, and my insurance information. She didn't provide any details back to me and she called the police. The police filled a report as she requested. She wanted me to pay out of pocket. The auto-shop quoted 500$. I told her I'm not paying out of pocket and that I'm going through insurance. She told me she didn't want her insurance company to know that she was in an accident and she refuses to provide any insurance information. She asked for my insurance to call her directly.

What do I do? It sounds like she doesn't have insurance. I live in Maryland.

If I take a payout from my insurance company for my disability in a lump sum instead of a monthly payment for the next 7 years, do I have to pay taxes on the lump sum amount? They want to buy me out. I don’t pay taxes on the monthly payment they are currently sending me.

Trying to increase liability coverage in homes - Florida

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 04:14 PM PDT

So I was reviewing the liability insurance that my homeowners insurance provides. I have two homes with Citizens Insurance (The State sponsored Company) that have $100,000 liability coverage each. I reached out to one of my agents for an increase in coverage to either $300,000 or $500,000 and She got me a quote for an "Excess Comprehensive Personal Liability Policy" from "Mount Vernon Fire Insurance Company" for an additional $400,000 for $336.

    • I thought it would be easier and cheaper to go through Citizens and ask for an increase. Is this something they don't do?

    • What do you guys think of the quote?

    • I have two homes and the policies are with two different agents but both of them with Citizens, would it be possible to combine both properties into one excess liability policy to cover both properties?

GEICO has taken more than 3 months for a simple claim, is this normal?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 03:42 PM PDT

    Hello everyone,

The issue is fairly simple. My wife parked one of our 2 cars at her work parking lot, and then came out at the end of the day to see the side of the front bumper was noticeably damaged. It would appear someone backed up into it and left the scene.

I opened a claim that very day, which was early march. Today, June 28th, we still have no communications regarding the claim. The app only shows the initial claim was submitted and we should wait for further communications.

We called GEICO after a few weeks and they said they had to investigate further than usual because our insurance had lapsed recently. This happened since auto-renewal didn't work and I didn't notice for a month, but I renewed about 2 weeks before this incident and had been covered with them for 5 years before this.

Is this normal? There were no witnesses, there are no cameras around the building, and we gave them every possible detail we had. What is there to investigate? What exactly could be taking this long? Are they dragging it out on purpose? Is there anything I can do to push this along?

Can I cancel a collision claim on a financed car?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 06:51 PM PDT

I hit a car on a parking lot. I got very nervous, I'm only been driving for the last 2 years and this was my first accident. I left my information to the other driver, called my Insurance and filled a claim. Other driver called me back and told me my insurance already contacted his. Now I realized my damage it's very little and would like to cancel my claim and just cover any deductible for the other car. But as my car is still own by the bank, will I be able to cancel the claim? Will the bank see there was a claim and make me go through with it?

Turo Rentals Covered by My Regular Geico insurance?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 06:42 PM PDT

Had just a quick question about insurance since I have a Turo car I'm renting tomorrow. I've heard conflicting information on whether my regular auto policy with Geico covers Turo rentals. I called Geico and they said it is covered but the agent also said they have never heard of Turo so I can't really trust her.

So I looked closely at my policy and found the following language. Even reading it 10 times I can't decipher for sure what it's trying to say. Here it is under the exclusions sections: "We will not pay for loss to, or loss of use of, a "non-owners auto" used by you in connection with a "peer-to-peer vehicle sharing platform" if the provisions of such "peer-to-peer vehicle sharing platform" preclude the recovery of such loss or loss of use by you, or if otherwise precluded by any state law"

Now to me that sounds like I'm covered unless Turo precludes it for some reason. Do you all agree? Or should I fork up the 40% more for the Turo insurance? Thanks!

TIFU by rear ending someone on my way to return a leased car. need some advice

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 09:54 PM PDT

My parents car was due to be returned while they were on vacation. I do not normally drive this car. I was asked to bring the car back to the dealership. on my way there, i rear ended someone after stopping short and the airbag popped. I called the police, but as NY is a no fault state and there were no injuries nobody came.

I had called the leasing company and cancelled the retrieval process for the time being.

I am not on the car's insurance policy, and i fear reporting it to the insurance company will raise my parents rates. The other driver is open to settling the issue outside of the insurance. It will certainly cost more in the short term but is something i am willing to pay for.

If i do call and make a claim that i will be at fault for, while paying for the damages of the other person outside of the insurance, will it reduce the amount their insurance policy will increase?

I'm aware of how fucking stupid this whole ordeal is and was hoping on some guidance on whether i should contact the insurance company and let them know what happened, or try to repair the vehicle and return the car with no one the wiser.

HR let qualifying event (losing parent's insurance) lapse + never informed me of 60 day open enrollment. What can I do?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 03:25 PM PDT

    Hello,

I am freshly 26, and this is my first time working somewhere with both an HR department & insurance. I don't really know much about health insurance, as I've been under my parents plan. I am not sure if any of this info was something I should have already known.

I was hired on a little less than 90 days ago. I won't go into detail, but HR did not orient me whatsoever - I received some info about the cost of health insurance only and immediately asked if that could be started after my current insurance ran out (I wasn't aware of the 31 day grace period at that time) - they got back to me saying I needed a letter from the current insurance showing when it runs out. They did not inform me about a 60 day sign up period after being hired.

Now, I rounded up the insurance form from my parents to give to HR, and they have refused to make time to sign me up. It technically ended this weekend. I don't have any documented evidence of telling them when it ran out officially, but I did tell them this in person. They simply don't respond to

So, what am I supposed to do? I finally have a meeting with HR, but they are now telling me they don't deal with the insurance directly, but have a rep. Will this rep give any leeway? When is open enrollment again, or what other circumstances would allow me to sign up.

I know this is partially my fault, letting the 31 day grace period lapse, but I only found out about it in the last week (the week it ended) as the insurance company would not talk to me - and my parents would not talk to them. I am so royally angry at HR and just want to know if there's anything else I can do, or if i'm out of luck.

I also signed up for Dental during its open enrollment period, and have received no information afterwards. So please let me know if I need to be angry about that too.

    Thank you

Edit: I am in NM, US

    Nanny Crashed my Car

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 09:16 PM PDT

She didn't total it but she severely damaged the side to where the door won't open and there's a giant dent. She did it hitting our gate while pulling into the driveway. I'm so bummed. Will my auto insurance likely cover this and if so is it worth making a claim? I think we have comprehensive insurance, it's a 2010 Toyota Highlander hybrid. I'm in California.

[USA] Health insurance royally screwed up and now we might be on the hook for thousands of dollars

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 12:33 PM PDT

    Location: Rhode Island, USA

We went from making $6000 a month to $3000ish a month after business expenses due to the pandemic and so on. My partner called HealthSourceRI in February to report that our income had gone down so we could get a new plan without paying as much as we would have if we were still making that much. The girl my partner talked to was sweet but new and having a lot of trouble; the computer crashed, she was confused and so on. At no point did my partner enter anything at all on the website, it was all done over the phone because my partner has OCD and was worried we'd screw something up. We also upgraded our insurance plan and have been paying $450 a month for that since February.

I found out from my doctor's office today that we don't have insurance, so I called our insurance company to find out what went wrong and that's how I discovered that they suspected fraud and retroactively cancelled our insurance for February through now. Somehow the girl my partner talked to at HealthSourceRI put our income down as a couple hundred dollars a month. Oh, and she also said we were landlords and that was rental income. Huh????? At least our business expenses were still accurate (close to $2000, while our income was like $200 or whatever, an obvious screw up).

The representative on the phone was very kind and apologetic, but explained that we were most likely on the hook for all medical expenses incurred between February and now. That includes expensive prescriptions, bloodwork, and a hospital bill. We are going to have to pony up for around $7000-$8000, and it was not remotely our faults. We still have no idea what happened, and the representative admitted that it was probably "someone new." Yeah. It was. And we can't afford that at all.

    What do we do?? :(

Edit: Apparently this is called rescission and is illegal unless it was deliberate fraud? I think the fact our income was down as $200 despite high expenses is proof of that... is it? Because that would make no sense. Especially if the call was recorded (please please please)?

First Car Accident - Help me navigate insurance?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 10:50 AM PDT

I experienced my first car accident this weekend. I was exiting from a highway with a green light. Someone ran the red light and hit me on the driver's side, directly on my door. The damage to both cars was pretty severe (my airbags deployed, damage to the whole side of my car, driver's side window shattered, tire all messed up because I was pushed into the median, when the tow truck lifted it up all sorts of stuff fell off!). I only have very minor (thankfully) injuries - bruises from the airbag, small cuts from the glass, muscle soreness from bracing myself.

Highway patrol came and took statements. The other driver admitted to the police that she had been looking down messing with her keychain, which was dangling on her leg. There were several witnesses who made statements that she ran the red. The other driver went to the hospital for a check-up. We exchanged information (via the police officer - he gave us both a printed form with insurance info, contact info). I have opened up the claim with her insurance company and I'm waiting for the adjuster to call me.

All signs point to her insurance paying me something for my car. I would be shocked if it's not totaled. Is there a way to maximize this payout? I know they just give you trade in or market value and that I'm going to end up with a stupid car payment (my wrecked car was paid off). I'm also without a car right now and can't get to work, etc. Any tips for navigating this? What should/can I ask for?

Car Hit a Pole in a Loading Zone

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 07:12 PM PDT

Hello, please let me know if there's a more suitable subreddit for this!

I'm a new driver, and I got lost trying to get home. I turned into an area behind a strip mall where there are garbage bins and areas for trucks to load stock into to check a map since my province doesn't allow GPS for new drivers for some god forsaken reason.

Getting out of that area, I hit a short yellow pole which I couldn't see backing up. I didn't even realize I hit it until the manager of the drugstore (which I assume owns the pole) let me know.

He told me that I'll need to pay for the damages for knocking over the pole, so I looped around into a back alley, got lost again, parked pretty far from the store and ran back to him.

After that, I asked if I needed to take any pictures or give him my number/license plate. I was really apologetic about it, and told him I got my license 2 weeks ago. He just told me to be careful next time and let me go.

My question is, who pays for the damages then? There is video footage of me backing into the pole, and footage of me talking to the manager. The pole's screws were rusting and falling apart so maybe it is due for a replacement (not to mention there was zero damage to the car) but I would feel terrible if the manager would have to pay out of pocket for letting me go without paying for damages.

Im still feeling the panic and adrenaline from both being lost and hitting the pole so I apologize if this sounds convoluted. Thank you for reading, and I would appreciate any insight on what the procedure typically is when drivers hit yellow poles.

Edit: I am in BC in Canada if that helps

    Brand new car totaled

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 07:08 PM PDT

My car was rear ended by a truck and the back bumper is slightly caved in and cracked and so are my taillights which run across the whole rear of the vehicle. My car was a 2021 Hyundai Sonata I was wondering if my insurance (StateFarm) would just rather fix the car and return rather then declare it a total loss since the damage isn't to crazy. If they decide to fix it and not declare it a total loss do I have to accept that vehicle that will now have diminished value and possibly be salvaged or do I have a say in having it totaled?

Short Term Disability for Maternity Leave

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 06:28 PM PDT

I've been reading some articles on the matter, and can't seem to get a straight answer from what I've read. Can anyone here please help me understand better? Here is my situation:

My company offers a voluntary (employee-paid) short-term disability plan that covers 50% pre-disability income for up to 24 weeks. They do not offer any other parental benefits outside of FMLA, and they have stated several times that they will not be changing that policy any time soon.

I enrolled in the short-term disability plan last October and October of the previous year with intentions of using the benefits for maternity leave. However, becoming pregnant didn't happen as quickly or as easily as we had hoped. I'm pregnant now, but not due to have our baby until next year.

Some of the articles I've read say that now I won't be eligible to re-enroll in the plan this October since I'll have to disclose that I'm pregnant during re-enrollment season. Is this really the case? It just doesn't make sense to me as it sounds like this policy arbitrarily benefits some people and penalizes others.

In other words, if getting pregnant had been easier for me, I could have conceived, carried, and delivered a baby all within the window of time between my plan's effective date and expiration date for either of the two years that I've already paid into it. Sure, in theory that could work, but it effectively penalizes women who struggle with infertility.

How long should it take to receive a check after a settlement has been agreed to?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 05:24 PM PDT

This is in Texas. I was in an accident July of 2020. The other drivers insurance settled the property claim within a month and I got the check shortly after. It took much longer to work out the medical bills but we finally signed that agreement on June 1. I still haven't received the check yet. Is this normal? Is there a point at which they have to send it?

Could someone with social anxiety disorder handle being an auto claims adjuster?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 11:26 AM PDT

I'm looking for a new career and saw some job opportunities for auto claims adjuster trainees in my area. I have a worthless liberal arts degree so a claims adjuster seems like the best salary I could get at this point. I've read all about the long hours and don't mind as I'm currently working 2 administrative jobs and usually work from 7am to 9pm. My main concern is if I could do this job with social anxiety disorder. I've never worked in a call center before and it's been a while since I've done customer service. I have a few questions about the job.

    1) Just how bad are the calls you usually deal with? Would you say the majority of them are nasty/angry people or just a small percent?

    2) Have any of you managed to do this job with anxiety disorders? Any advice to be successful at it would be appreciated.

Served large claims after not at fault accident we had no collision coverage

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 03:04 PM PDT

I read several other posts saying I shouldn't be concerned but my situation is a bit different. A few months ago we were sandwiched between a brake checker and following car. Police report shows brake checker and following car at fault. Also shows brake checker did not get towed and no injuries. Our car was totalled and we were paid from the rear driver's insurance. Now the brake checker has a large claim against us and the rear car's driver. It shows medical, dental hospital records were filed. Our car was old and we didn't have collision coverage. Is our insurance company still obligated to defend us?

Helping a young friend apply for insurance, Are permits included in "When did you get your license" question in auto policy?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 02:57 PM PDT

    Hi,

Pretty much the title. Are driving permits/Learning Permits included in the length of "When did you get your license?" questions in an auto application? Eg, the person I'm trying to help got their permit two-ish years ago and just got their independent license this May. Would they say 07/2019 or 05/2021 for this?

    I'd appreciate it.

    Edit: We're both in Arizona.

If you get help getting a rental through your insurance, would they be able to extend the length of it?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 02:56 PM PDT

So here is my scenario, basically I got into a wreck which totaled my car. My insurance is covering the cost of the car, and they got me a rental for a couple days. Basically, since I'm not getting any money from my insurance, I have to come up with a way to have a working vehicle so I can get to work. I'm guessing my insurance hadn't payed the dealership back yet since they still took out the money for my car note, and that made my account overdraft. I don't get paid until Friday so I wouldn't be able to pay for the rental with my own money, and I wouldn't even have money to Uber to work. So if need be, has anyone ever heard of an insurance company extending the time on a rental? I'm in a really bad spot right now and if anyone has any kind of advice at all please help.
