Frivolous 1-star review on Google after we told customer that we cannot help him with a job as it's too big for us

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 10:30 AM PDT

I am the owner of a small drywall repair business. By small, I mean really small. I currently have only one person working, and I take the phone calls and manage the business. We mainly do small jobs, like patching holes and stuff. Had a person send us a message through our website yesterday requesting a quote for a job. Called him to understand the job and it seemed like too big of a job than we can handle (fix ceiling in the entire first floor of the house). Politely explained him that and said sorry before ending the call. A few hours later, a one star rating pops up on Google (without any written content). It's him. Curious as to why he left a one-star rating and to make sure it's not by mistake, I call him again. He tells me that we wasted his time because he went to our website, which says we are a drywall repair business and do ceiling repair, but we did not do his estimate or job. Again, I tried to reason with him and explain to him politely that we don't have the manpower to handle bigger jobs and that we specialize in smaller jobs. Of course, that didn't help.

I'm pretty sure I can't do much about the 1-star review and it will stay there, but any word of advice for dealing with such situations in the future will be helpful.

Btw, I replied to his initial review (which did not have any content) on Google explaining whatever happened and why we couldn't do it. I just noticed that he now edited his original empty review and wrote a paragraph, saying we didn't have time to do the estimate or the job, but we did have the time to call him about the review and "harrass" him, blah blah (everything I said during our conversation was in a polite and professional manner).

Just frustrated at how some people take everything for granted. Wish there was a platform to review customers too, lol.

Should I join and take over a family own restaurant or continue my job as a Software Engineer?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 06:24 PM PDT

Hey everyone, I am really confused about what would be good for my future and need some help to look at things from a different perspective. Currently, I work as a Software Engineer at a pretty known company, but I absolutely don't like it but can deal with it and can suppress my hatred. I recently started my job as I graduated only last year, so its been almost a year working in my field of study. I have an option to join my family restaurant and take that over so my parents can retire as well.

The reason why I am asking this question is that, I don't like having a boss, I like to be my own boss. I don't enjoy constant learning and always having to stress just to meet the deadlines etc. Those are the disadvantages with working as Software Engineer. Looking at the other side, I only have to worry about my 8 hours and then I am done. I get weekends off and also get paid vacation.

Taking over the restaurant, I would have to work every day, including weekends 12+ hours a day. But I get be my own boss, and I also have option to expand and open more locations in different cities/towns.

TLDR; Read the title of this post and the below paragraph.

Anyone here who has been through this and what path did you end up choosing? I am still new to this phase of my life as its only been a year I finished my university and stepped into the real world. Can someone give me your 2 cents please?

It was really difficult for me to start a second-hand online shop until I read this blog from Techosquare. Literally, if I had found this blog earlier, I would have earned a lot of profits by now - no muss, no fuss.

Here is the guide to starting a second-hand online store!

    Opening a small business

    Posted: 30 Jun 2021 03:01 AM PDT

    Hello all,

I'm a 15 year old student who has some money saved up and wants to start up a small/very small business with a mate. I was thinking about being a vendor at car shows and car racing festivals because there is a big market of cars in my area, with small vendors and stalls at them. I also thought it wouldn't be bad because I could eventually scale the business up for a more permanent income. Does anyone have any good tips or things/subjects to keep in the back of my mind while creating it? Also any other useful information about anything to do with this topic would be greatly appreciated.

    -Tom

How to respond without being a jerk?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 03:13 PM PDT

Last week I billed a client ("Bruce") who in turn passed the bill to his client ("Karen"). Karen paid the invoice.

"Bruce" says his wife saw the invoice on his desk and paid it too.

I only have one deposit, and it's from Karen.

I've reconciled the account. Every single darn transaction is matched with a receipt or a check. There is only the 1 transaction in the last 6 months that matches the amount of this invoice and let Bruce know.

Karen just emailed to remind me, and CC'd Bruce that the invoice was paid twice and we need to refund Bruce.

How do I politely handle this?

    Leads and just help

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 09:22 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

I started working for a roofing company t running operations in October. I have been in roofing for 4-5 years now and really enjoy it. I have been in sales mostly, and currently I answer phone, sell, set appointments, order materials, set up dates, pick up checks, everything to run a business without the financial responsibility.

In October I told the boss before he hired me that I'm either taking his offer or starting my own company. His offer was 50k base plus 20% commission. I decided to get more experience so I took his offer. He mentioned that if we hit it off he would be fine with selling me the roofing side so he can focus on his bread and butter side, the siding / gutter side. I thought great! Maybe we can find some deal that works for us.

The problem We have gotten slow. I'm talking weeks where I maybe get on 3 roofs. Maybe go 3 weeks without selling a job. Some weeks I sell 3-4. Some weeks 1. I want more leads. We do a few google things but it's just not as busy as my old roof sales job. Where do you get your leads? How do we get out there?

The other problem I want my own business. My wife says how are you going to do that? You don't have any business now? I tell her well it's not my business Yet, or ever potentially. No numbers have been discussed. Im not going to work myass off to get this company on its feet to where the price is even higher. Im doing enough to get by. My job isn't to knock on doors it's to take calls and sell. Am I wrong for this?

Really need to find where good leads come from and any advice really.

    Family business with no control

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 09:13 PM PDT

Hi, so I have been working for our family business for about 4-5 years. I was thrown to the wolves right after college to grow our business/products in a brand new territory in a new state. I've learned so much along the way but I really feel like I want to take our business in a direction that I may not be getting buy-in.

My "bosses" are very old school and just don't see any value in spending a bit of money to increase our online presence and grow sales channels in other ways. There's so much opportunity it stresses me out and feel trapped.

Is there a way to structure our business so that nobody is screwed and I can just do my thing? Like Same company X division as a standalone thing. Give them a fair %. No idea where to start.

I want everyone to benefit and don't blame anyone. I'm just held back to be honest and want to take the business in my own direction in my own territory. To give you an example, of what I deal with day to day: I once requested a list of customer proposals sorted by Territory to follow up . This can be export to excel in about 1 minute.

I got chewed out for wasting their time and took a week to get the info.

What do I put on my website?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 07:19 AM PDT

I help run a small party rental business and we are building our website. We have products we rent out but we also provide a service of helping set up and take down some of the rentals. When I build the website (drag and drop haha ) should I put at the top a tab for products and services or just products? If I should put services what should I put on that page? Sorry if this is a basic question or not relevant to this group.

Does anyone use Discord for their internal communication?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 08:30 PM PDT

Debating whether or not to implement discord as our communication tool. I know there is Slack also but it has limited calling/voice compatibility and we need something that has both voice and text. What features do you think wouldn't possibly be good? Thoughts?

    Small Business CRM advice

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 11:51 PM PDT

I am looking to opening accounting firm and would like some advice around CRMs and customer database software.

    My two requirements are:

Store customer details / customer database (ideally log interactions, visibility on future/past bookings etc)

Booking system (preferable with integration into outlook)

Which CRM would tick both these boxes?

Any information on CRMs in general and which ones everyone is using would be great too.

(Ideas) Businesses that can make a lot of money

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 11:04 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I am a recent college grad and I'm looking to start my own business. After browsing through this forum I have seen posts about businesses to start with no money, great businesses ideas, etc. yet none of them really strike my interest as I know there's businesses you can start with almost nothing and be widely successful. I was just wondering if anyone has any crazy or interesting business ideas that are relatively low in cost to startup. For example, my sister does wedding planning and some of the wedding planners that run their own businesses can pull in about $~400k...no joke. So I know the wedding industry has some opportunity but as a man wedding planning might not be the best idea haha. Just ideas like that would be greatly appreciated!

    Planning for future/yearly demand change?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 06:52 PM PDT

Hey All, background I started landscaping, softscape and gardens only no hardscape, business 3 years ago and am doing it full time this year with 6 part timers. it's going very well and I far surpassed my expectations and goals money wise. We had some very good jobs this year and they went well. I am worried that will be the exception and not the rule.

How do you all plan for or think about the future or do you just hold on to your pants and hope for the best? If things are going well should we continue to do the same thing? I'm working on building our maintenance schedule as that gives us steady hours. We also have a 40 person wait-list, which doesn't always pan out, do there does seem to be a demand.

I used to teach for 10 years so there was more certainty with that. Also to note, I am a stay at home dad now so I don't plan to expand the business much more until I have more time.

    Amy thoughts or ramblings appreciated

Selling websites as a side job?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 06:40 PM PDT

I have some experience with html/css/javascript and recently built a website for a friend using squarespace. I was wondering if anyone had any experience developing webpages as a side job and if anyone had any tips on doing so?

I've seen posts of some people charging a large one time fee for websites and others charging monthly payments. However for those charging a one time fee how are they able to make that work when there are costs for website hosting/domain hosting? Wouldn't they eventually break even on the profits for maintaining the site? Or do they just charge a one time fee for building the website and have the customer take over maintenance?

    Order tracking

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 09:35 PM PDT

I am setting up square and purchasing system. I am curious if square has order tracking? For instance say a customer orders a product and it does not arrive, can they tell me their order number and i can look it up in the system and see their info along with receipt? Would I be better off with a different system?

    Anyone run a mobile business?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 08:31 PM PDT

I was thinking of getting into the business of customizing vans/trucks for small businesses like mobile auto detailers, coffee trucks, etc. As business grows I could start looking at building out larger vehicles, but the plan is to stay small initially until I get experience.

Does anyone here run out of vehicle for their business? Do you wish you could but there's just no vehicle built for what you do?

If you did get one, did you stick with an unmodified vehicle and just cram everything in there? Did you get a custom one? What did you like / not like?

    Any feedback is appreciated!

Anyone else being threatened by employees

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 08:23 PM PDT

So last year our accountant/ secretary made a mistake with payroll and paid employees for 4rth of July (US). Today some employees started grumbling how "they better get paid for it again, or else" kind of grumbling.

Now I personally do not mind paying it ad a kind of thank you bonus. But I am beyond tired of being threatened. (Info. Our employees are extremely saught after because we take the time and train people. Alot of competition have tried this year to hire people away)

    What would you do?

Compensation for consulting with a start up?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 02:51 PM PDT

How should I be compensated for working with a start up? I saw an article about an innovative technology in my field of work and reached out to the inventor to see if it was really as cool as it sounds. It is!

This company launched about 2 years ago and has seen very little adoption. They have some product issues but it's largely a marketing and positioning problem (imagine they make a superior type of plumber's putty…but they never talked to a single plumber about what we want in a product). They're making some silly mistakes regarding product packaging (who wants to buy a 50 gallon drum???), they're completely missing the direct-to-consumer market, etc.

As somebody who owns a service business, I understand their target market and have a marketing background. I think this could be huge. I've met the new CEO and he's asked me to join their board, hammer out a go-to-market strategy, and generally consult.

How should I ask to be compensated? Hourly rate? Annual fee? I'd like a piece of the pie but they recently brought in a new angel investor in so I doubt they're giving away equity (even if I put up some cash).

Is anyone else getting destroyed this year around holidays?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 02:04 PM PDT

My retail store and legal document delivery businesses were crawling during the weeks surrounding Memorial Day and now leading up to the 4th of July, I have less than a day's worth of sales over 2 days time. Are folks taking extra long vacations this year or what? Anyone else experiencing the same thing?
