Can insurance rates be raised after reporting a not-at-fault accident that the insurance company doesn’t even have to cover?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 02:28 PM PDT

The other night an older vehicle (a van) I own was rear-ended while it was parked on the street outside a relative's house. It appears that most of the damage is confined to the rear bumper, but it was hit very hard. The circumstances indicated the driver at fault must have been incredibly impaired. The hitting car took off, but was leaking radiator fluid and I was able to track it down a few blocks away. The police were called but said that car was stolen and they didn't think they would find the driver. They did create a police report.

I'm pretty sure that I don't have collision coverage on my vehicle any more. I was curious if just discussing the accident with my insurance agent could still affect my insurance rates, just because an accident occurred to a car that I owned.

Losing insurance, how will billing work?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 04:43 AM PDT

I went to the dentist last week and got the bill today, and tomorrow I lose my secondary insurance. If I don't pay it until next week, will it still be partially covered by the insurance? Thanks!

    Need to rescue my gums!

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 01:44 AM PDT

3 years ago I went to a dentist after 10 yrs of just brushing and flossing thinking it's enough, and found out I have periodontal disease and needed a full mouth deep cleaning which Medicaid wasn't gonna pay for and the amount I would've had to pay was way beyond what I can afford, so I left the dentist and didn't go back. Well today I'm suffering and need to see a dentist so I'm shopping for dental plans but it's so confusing!! I don't know where to start should I choose the doctor first then choose insurance they accept? How do I know what plan is best for me to get my periodontal treatment covered? Looking for an individual plan and I reside in MI.

    WFH versus Retrun to Office

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 08:42 PM PDT

The company I work for is beginning the return to office. Employees are not happy and this and are leaving for other more flexible insurance companies. Morale is terrible. They did say that we can work from home with near perfect scores...spoiler alert...about 5% of the 40,000 plus employees meet that number. And that is for 1 day at home a week. It is even higher if you want 5 days.

What we are trying to figure it out, is why can the other insurance companies manage WFH hybrids...why can't this big one also so this?

Are any other companies having similar issues (to clarify this is a call center company) with having employees talking about or already leaving over WFH?

Did your employer grow with the times and offer WFH or WFH hybrid?

Neighbor's contractor had block driveway and snapped cable/internet line (WFH loss wages). Claim? Against who?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 02:54 PM PDT

Wanted to see if I had any options. Blocking my egress/ingress to my driveway for days was annoying, but cutting my internet when I work from home and literally am I not allowed back into my office to work will cost me (concrete truck hit the line and snapped it, blamed me when I asked WTH).

Dreaming that I can go after someone to make back 2 days of wages, or stuck with a shitty neighbor?

Expat / retire early health insurance question

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 11:35 PM PDT

Hi folks, comparing critical illness insurance policies available in my market and am confused. Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

    My Background:

Mid-30s, M, father of two, single earner Living in middle east, Citizen of a country without a medical system I can rely on Currently have a job of USD~500k a year in tech, intend to FIRE (retire early) by 40 in this Middle Eastern country

    Insurance Objective:

What I'm trying to avoid is if me or my spouse being diagnosed with a critical/terminal illness, one has to work for the insurance coverage or to medical expenses. Thus looking to get a critical illness insurance that can cover us for the long-term.

Not worried about life insurance for now. Good savings and covered by employers' life plan for now. Might consider once I FIRE.

    Insurance Options I've looked at:

Term Life + Critical Illness Insurance (by Zurich/ Metlife) - Buy a 25-year term policy for USD 250k each for me and my spouse. In case of Critical Illness diagnosis, there is One lumpsum payout for an event... subsequent events are not covered. Total annual cost for wife and me = USD 2,450 per annum. Total spend for 25 years = USD 61,250. Pros: flexible, cheaper, can cancel anytime with no penalty (esp. if we have access to better plans in the future). Cons: Only covers us till age 60, after which we need to purchase a new term life insurance and premiums for the new policy will be much higher / might not cover pre-existing conditions, given our age and medical conditions 25 years later. Whole of Life Insurance with Death or Critical Illness Cover (Futura by Zurich) - Cover of USD 250k each, which covers us till age 95, with a fixed number of premium paying years, ranging from 10-25 years. For easy comparison to #1 above, I'm looking at a 25 year payment term. In case of Critical Illness diagnosis, there is One lumpsum payout for an event... subsequent events are not covered. Total annual cost for wife and me = USD 7,148 per annum. Total spend for 25 years = USD 178,700. Pros: Coverage for critical illness till age 95, premium is locked in throughout the premium paying years. After the premium has been fully paid over 25 years, (if we need the money) we have the option to withdraw the full amount paid and cancel the policy. Cons: Highly inflexible and hard to cancel before the 25 year term. Premium is extremely high, roughly 3x of the term life insurance per year. Better investment opportunities if we invest the $$. Based on the info above, should we bite the bullet and pay the extra premium for coverage till 95 (option #2)? Or should we go with the flexible/cheaper, but shorter-term, Term Plan (option #1)?

Or any other completely different options I haven't thought about? Big thanks in advance.

    Question on MI car insurance

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 11:34 PM PDT

    Hello all,

I am going to be moving to Michigan and as such have started looking at car insurance there. I have come across something called personal injury protection (PIP). I am confused as to what this is/what it covers. I've tried looking it up, and tried asking some people I thought would know but I'm still confused on it. Can anyone here possibly explain what PIP is in a simple manner? Is PIP needed if I'll have health insurance though my job? Many Thanks!

Need help for insurance claim filed on my insurance for an accident that I wasn't involved in

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 11:31 PM PDT

Somehow an insurance claim was filed on my insurance for an accident in a city about 2 hours away. Neither me or my car was involved in it. I called my insurance provider (progressive) and they basically said they can't do anything about it? Any advice on how I can get this removed from my claims? I'm located in Tennessee and my provider said there was a police report but they don't have it.

Got quoted $104 per month from progressive, is it good?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 10:14 PM PDT

Liability for personal injury is 250/500, prop damage is 100, deductible for collision is $500, deductible for comprehensive is $500, 50/100 UN/UD, no medical payments, rental or road ride.

How to proceed with getting damages fixed in chain reaction crash

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 10:03 PM PDT

I live in Philadelphia, pa and about a month ago i was rear ended. I hit another car as a result. The car in front took my insurance and not the guy who started the chain. By this point the insurance for the car that started the crash has assumed liability. Ive got an estimate and an appointment to put my car in the shop for repairs but, when i called about the rental car they said they cant approve my car for repairs because of the third car not filing a claim. Is there some way to resolve this. They've (the insurance)been aware of the 3rd vehicle the entire time but every-time it starts to move forward they bringup the third car.Recently the insurance company has been trying to get me to go through my insurance and seek reimbursement. Is there any way to get this moving and negate the third car. Also is it bad to go through my insurance?

Auto body work - Questions about cost

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 06:07 PM PDT

2020 Kia Soul - California, Sacramento area

Some crazy homeless lady threw rocks at my car (the police actually found her, she got tired of throwing rocks at my car and went and had breakfast at a Starbucks, who also called the police on her. My neighbor's camera caught some of the incident, so I have that at least.)

So I know I am not getting a dime from her, but the car is pretty new to me, I have had it 1.5 years. I want to repair it, my insurance deductible is $500 so I am wondering if it would be cheaper than that to repair.

    https://imgur.com/a/R4aZ9v5

I am just looking for a ball park idea of what to expect cost wise, I am trying to setup an inspection, but am wondering if I should just go to a shop on my own if it might be less than the $500 deductible.

    Thanks

    Cash value in whole life

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 01:05 PM PDT

I've decided to stick with my whole life insurance plan largely bc I want to ensure I am passing the death benefit onto my children vs just income replacement.

I know a benefit of the cash value is to pay for premiums but curious how much value should you have before exploring this option? Or, also open to any pro tips on how to approach this. Thanks!

    Special Assessment Insurance

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 05:05 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I am a first time condo buyer based in Canada, Ontario, and I am currently looking to purchase condo insurance.

I read online that some condo insurance packages often include special assessment insurance. That way, if you get slapped with a huge bill by your condo corp, some of it is covered by said insurance.

I tried to call TD, RBC and Desjardins, and all three were unclear if they covered this or not (when I ask if the insurance covers special assessments, the operators did not seem to understand what I was saying).

Can someone confirm that condo insurance which cover special assessments exist, and if so, are there any good providers to recommend in Canada?

    Thank you!!

scared that third-party insurer will total my car -- how to prevent it?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 08:39 PM PDT

    Here are the deets:

I drive a 1997 Toyota Tacoma. 2WD. It's in better-than-average condition. No accidents, ever. I'm the original owner. It has 410,000 miles. Mechanically sound. I've got full coverage on it. Located in TN.

Yesterday, a big service truck (from a big internet company) side swiped my car while it was parked in front of my house. The driver admitted fault, the police came out and did their report.

I went ahead and had my local body shop give me an estimate to fix. It came to $4,100. (Note: I know this body shop is approved by my own auto insurer, State Farm. Not sure about big company's insurer.)

I understand I have two options: filing a third-party claim with their insurance, or filing a first-party claim with my insurance. Ultimately, I'm most scared of it getting totaled. I've had it forever, I don't want a salvage title attached to it, and I want to be able to keep full coverage on it.

I've had a hard time finding comps for it. I can't find any with this many miles, and I can't find any with a single owner. As best I can total, the actual value is somewhere between $3500 - $6500.

What are the pros/cons of filing with their insurance vs. mine?

    - If they have an adjuster try to total the vehicle, what recourse do I have? Sending over more research/comps and disputing it?

    - Will their adjuster have the right to declare my car totaled with the state, even without my consent?

    - I've heard that I have a contractual obligation to accept the total loss valuation from my own insurer, but not theirs. Is this...true?

    - If I find myself disputing a total loss declaration with an adjuster -- would I rather it be an adjuster from my own insurance company or theirs?

From what I understand, I need to hope that the adjuster values my car at $5,500 in order to stay below the 75% threshold for TN. Does anyone know system State Farm uses to value vehicles, and if $5,500 seems feasible?

    How does LAH licensing work?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 08:26 PM PDT

Got my life and health license today and it expires in 3 months for some reason because my birthday is in an odd year. I thought it would last for 2 years. I start my job next week which means I only get to use it for about a month before I'm required to renew it (you have to renew at least 60 days before it expires). But the crazy part is I need to do 15 hours of continuing education before I can renew it. I haven't even started my job yet and I took the exam last week. What can I do? I don't want to spend my first few weeks as an agent studying for something I already spent a month studying for to pass an exam just this last week. Because I'll have to be doing more studying when I should be working. Studying to prove I haven't forgotten the stuff I learned for an exam I took last week. This is usually something you do every 2 years to refresh your memory. I feel like I'm being ripped off. Can someone explain? It's a bit absurd to me. NY state btw.

Totalled Car Valuation - Am I Negotiating Correctly?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 08:19 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I received an offer on my totalled car from my insurance company. Before removing the deductible, but AFTER adding in sales tax and notary fees, they're offering $4930. My car is a 2010 with 14,700 miles.

I did research, compiled an Excel spreadsheet, and calculated the average mileage and ASKING PRICE of my car's model (within 250 miles of me) to be 77,555 and $6,000, respectively. Basically, they're $1,100 short the asking price of the same vehicle with 60,000 more miles.

I know I could negotiate that price down some, but even doing so the sales tax and notary fee would bring it up again substantially, and this is once again for a substantially more used car than the one I'm driving.

I'm negotiating with them - hopefully tomorrow - and just wondering if there's anything specific you guys would add/want to see? I have one spreadsheet for the current market, and another spreadsheet with KBB, Edmunds, and TrueCar/CarGuru market values.

I'm not trying to rip off my insurance company, we get along with them well, but I literally cannot get a car anywhere near what the totalled one was based on their valuation so far. Pretty frustrating honestly.

Edit: since the bot asked, this is taking place in PA

    MassMutual LTC policy

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 04:06 PM PDT

My wife and I bought long term care (LTC) policies from MassMutual in 2012 (residing in WA at the time now in AZ). In 2018 we received a letter from MassMutual indicating our premiums might increase. To date they have not proposed any increase. A financial advisor we interviewed suggested that most LTC policies incur increases in premiums after 10-12 years mainly because it was new product and not priced correctly. Questions: (1) do you think we should expect a substantial increase in our policy or were policies "priced" correctly when our policy was issued (2012)? (2) any MassMutual policy holders that have had significant increases in premiums? What % and when was your policy issued? (3) thoughts on switching to combo life insurance policies with LTC?

Minor flooding- insurance says car totaled

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 07:43 PM PDT

    Hello all,

About 3 weeks ago we had some freak flash flooding in our area. My car took on about an inch, at the most 2 inches of water (based off my pictures as it was happening). It was not from a flooded body of water but rather rainwater that couldn't drain fast enough. It sat in the water for 3 hours- at the most- before the water began to recede. I have photo evidence of this. It was never high enough to reach under the hood and I didn't find any water in the engine. The only damage I observed was wet floor boards and the front seats were slightly wet. It's driven perfectly since then and no lights are lit up on the dashboard.

My insurance, based on the pictures they requested, has determined my car to be a total loss. It's a '16 Honda Civic EX with 80k miles in great conditions with no cosmetic flaws. I have a hard time believing it's a total loss, especially without physically inspecting it. One of the reps said I should fight back on it because it seemed odd that it would be a total loss with such minimal damage. I've treated the interior with vinegar and have let it air out as much as possible. It's black interior but I have not seen evidence of much mold.

Does this seem odd? Would you fight back on it? Any words of advice would be appreciated. I purchased this car last July and there's about a $2k difference between what I owe and the KBB value of the car.

Meeting insurance adjuster for a tree that fell on my shed. What should I expect?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 03:17 PM PDT

Hi all, this will be my first homeowner's claim and I'm really not sure what to expect, or even what I should be hoping for tomorrow..

So there's currently a large branch laying on top of my shed. The roof of the shed is dented in (supporting beams are cracked) but the shed is still standing. What's the best case scenario here? I know my adjuster will probably explain this to me, but I'd like a little bit of knowledge beforehand.

Do I go get quotes to fix the shed roof and give them to insurance? Could they deem the shed a total loss and pay me.. what they think the shed is worth? Or do I need a quote for that too?

I really would like the shed fixed as I'm hoping to sell the property soon and would need it fixed prior.

Any information is helpful! Including questions I should ask the adjuster or other things to think about.

Am I able to decline their insurance and purchase a private family plan?

I've gotten quotes for just my wife and daughter for half that cost which is great but my wife would prefer us to all be in the same plan if possible.

I received a letter in the mail about my COVID vaccine.

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 06:41 PM PDT

ETA: This is in Cook County, Illinois

The bill says they sent the payment to a hospital and what the claim payment amount is($40). There's another paper that says $454 has been applied to my $4,000 program in out-of-pocket limit.

But I thought the vaccine was free? I'm not sure why I was asked for my insurance card in the first place. But I thought it was to create a paper trail or something. What do I say when I call in the morning in order to get this fixed?

Also, do insurance companies normally send mail to the contract holder instead of the actual patient? The bill was sent to my dad but all of the information says that I'm the patient. So unfortunately he opened it up but didn't read the whole thing. I haven't told my parents that I was getting vaccinated. So, I feel a bit violated that they sent the letter addressed to him with my information in there.

    Which insurance to take?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 05:43 PM PDT

Hi. Recently I got a new job in Washington and they offer two insurance providers. As far as I can tell, the plans for both are pretty much the same, except one is "In-Network Only" and the other isn't.

I know what in-network is, and I'm struggling to find a reason why a plan that includes only that is better than one that might provide for in-network AND out-of-network.

If both plans provide the same benefits at the same cost, is there any reason to take in "In-Network Only" plan over the other?
