Accounting Firm Partner Anti Asian Remarks

    Posted: 07 Jun 2021 10:08 PM PDT

With the rise of Anti Asian hate, I feel that it is time for me to speak up about an incident. Four years ago, I was working at a local medium size accounting firm. The experience there was not great at all. During a lunch meeting, the Partner at the table openly complained that there are too many Chinese in her neighbourhood. At the table, there were around at least 4-5 Chinese employees who were silent.

I was too young and junior back then. But over the years, I feel the need to do something, about this individual, probably this firm. Dear Reddit, what options do I have?

How can we inspire kids to become accountants

    Posted: 07 Jun 2021 08:58 AM PDT

Kids always wanna be cops or lawyers or doctors or pilots. How can we show them that long hours at a desk for average pay at a Coca Cola headquarters in Rochester, NY is equally as heroic and respected? Not to mention that loss of hair and sex drive can be sexy to unique women.

I want my kids to come to the office and be equally mesmerized as they would be had they stepped into the cockpit of an airplane. I want my 10 year old to go, "WOW, Daddy, you do this?! WOW I LOVE EXCEL SPREADSHEETS! WHOA, VLOOKUPS? GET OUTTA HERE!!"

Staff 2 at Big 4 looking for career advice

    Posted: 07 Jun 2021 03:05 PM PDT

Hey everyone - this is my first time posting in this subreddit.

I'm a staff accountant (2nd year) working at a big 4. I think like many, coming out of college I didn't know what I wanted to do with my career - so I picked the accounting route and followed the crowd. Eventually got a job at a public accounting firm with the intention to pursue my CPA hoping it would lead to more opportunities in the future. I was lucky enough to write my exams a year early so all I need now is the hours to get my designation.

The last 2 years I have figured out accounting and auditing is not for me - I'm hoping to spend the next few months of summer figuring out what career path interests me, what are more realistic pivots and opportunities but I have no idea where to really even start. Any advice from the community would be greatly appreciated!

Came here to rant about good people leaving.

    Posted: 07 Jun 2021 08:21 AM PDT

Sucks to have your one of your favorite co workers leave the company. If anything, the people in your team are what make the experience a little more tolerable. Now I count the days and hours till I can do the same move myself.

Considering leaving firm after 5-6 months with nothing lined up

    Posted: 07 Jun 2021 10:12 PM PDT

I got my first accounting job out of college back in January. I've been working for a very small firm doing audit and tax. I've enjoyed the type of work i'm doing, but i've been thinking about leaving because of my toxic boss.

My boss is constantly in a bad mood and takes it out on the staff. It was really bad during busy season and I was hoping things would get better once it was over but they haven't. I thought I could stick it out while applying for other jobs outside of work but the last couple weeks have made me wonder if I can handle it for much longer and finding a new job could take months. I know that many if not most of the staff in the past have left for other firms for the same reason and nobody currently working at the firm has been here longer than a year because she either fired them or they quit.

I'm in a position where I would be okay financially if i left but i'm worried that it would look bad to leave my first accounting job after only 5-6 months. I'm worried that other firms wouldn't hire me if they see that I left my first job so quickly without anything lined up. Normally I would just suck it up but it's really starting to affect me mentally. I'm not sure what I should do

Got an internship at the Accounting department of a bank - what to expect?

    Posted: 07 Jun 2021 07:35 PM PDT

    Hello everyone!

I just got an offer for an intern position in the Accounting department of a big bank (one of the BBs), specifically in the Regulatory Reports team. Internships in my country work a bit differently (you work year-round instead of only during college break) so my routine is likely to be similar to that of a 1st year analyst in the US.

With that being said, does anyone have any experience working in banks they're willing to share, even if outside regulatory reports? The team briefed me on what they do but I wanted to get a more in-depth overview and also learn more about average hours, career progression, biggest hurdles, etc. I've never seen careers in banks discussed here so I don't know what to expect.

    Thanks in advance!

    Manager interview for public acctg

    Posted: 07 Jun 2021 09:10 PM PDT

I have an interview coming up for a manager role in public accounting that's under advisory. Anyone know how technical the questions are going to be?

I've done public in the past under audit, but the internship interview questions felt more like "feelers" to see if they wanted you. I have a couple of years under my belt now with half being in industry, and wanted to see how different the two would be.

What do big 4 tax interns typically do?

    Posted: 07 Jun 2021 08:23 PM PDT

Hi, I'm a college student. Didn't get any big 4 internship and now working as an tax intern at a big non-accounting company.

It's been a few weeks into the internship but most of the time I was only handling PowerPoint or pulling some data from source document for return reconciliation.

I think I might get more things to do in the future but right now I don't feel busy or my task really challenging. I feel a little depressed and I am wondering what big 4 tax interns typically do during their summer internships?

Is there a solution to overworking during (audit) busy season?

    Posted: 07 Jun 2021 08:08 PM PDT

I interned in audit part time in a traditional small/medium regional public accounting firm so I never had the full "busy season" experience, but remember hearing during the staff meetings that 53-55 billable hours/wk was expected. I know that's a lot less than other firms.

I haven't worked in traditional FS audit for a few years but am interested in working in it again except for the extra hours you need to put in during busy season.

Is there a future for public accounting that doesn't have a busy season? Why is this martyrdom of busy season perpetuated? How does anyone survive busy season, especially if you are pregnant or have children?

Would data analytics and computer science skills be beneficial as an accountant?

    Posted: 07 Jun 2021 04:55 PM PDT

Accounting student here. I have taken multiple development and data analytics classes at my university, and I was wondering if they would carry over well into the accounting field.

While I find accounting interesting, my computer and mathematics/analytics courses have been the most thought-provoking.

I have heard from some people in audit and tax that have said it is useless, while I have heard from others that it has tremendously assisted them in their careers.

What are your thoughts? I would love to hear some opinions from those in the field! Thank you!

What do you consider a job hopper?

    Posted: 07 Jun 2021 09:59 AM PDT

I graduated in 2017 and started working at a public accounting firm later that year in the fall. I ended up working in public accounting for 2 years and decided to try out corporate accounting. I don't enjoy corporate accounting as much as I thought I would and I'm looking to find something else after 1 year and 7 months. Would you consider this job hopping? I'm 26 and don't want to screw up my resume.

What do you do if you have no tasks to do?

    Posted: 07 Jun 2021 07:31 AM PDT

Hey everyone, so I'm currently a tax intern in industry and it's remote. I finished my tasks for the day so far and it's not even noon, so just got curious and was wondering what you do if you don't have any work to do. Specifically asking for other interns input, but feel free to answer anyways if you're not!

    Question on job search

    Posted: 07 Jun 2021 02:06 PM PDT

I am curious what experience others had when applying for positions online (Linkedin, company postings) as compared to working with a headhunter/recruiter. I currently work at a Big4 firm as an experienced associate and passed the CPA.

Have you found professional recruiters to be beneficial in the process of finding the job you were looking for? Or did you find that applying directly to companies through Linkedin, company website, etc.. was a better route? Any input is appreciated, thanks!

Graduating with a MAcc but don’t enjoy accounting

    Posted: 07 Jun 2021 08:31 PM PDT

I'm graduating in December and feel really lost. I am in a great position (graduating with no student debt with a masters in accounting and currently interning at a big four firm) but I can't see myself doing this work and being happy. I've had a hard enough time with my mental health in the past (depression and anxiety) and I feel that a high stress job isn't the right option for me. I worked really hard to achieve my goals but I'm starting to realize I chose accounting for the wrong reasons and feel a lot of regret for choosing this major.

I'm wondering if others have been in this situation and were able to apply to other positions unrelated to accounting. I have an interest in supply chain but don't know if an accounting degree would qualify me for those positions. I'm willing to give accounting a chance but I'm not someone who can handle extreme hours and harsh deadlines long term. I also think it might be easier to try a different career path earlier rather than later and am feeling a lot of pressure on my next steps after December.

    FAR

    Posted: 07 Jun 2021 08:23 PM PDT

I've studied about 70 hours in the last 2 weeks and will finish FAR 5 tomorrow. I'm supposed to sit for the exam on June 17th (a week from Thursday) and just did the calculations and have about 111 hours left on Becker before the final review. I'm thinking about moving the exam date back at least a week but feel like some people can cram really well. Any advice?
