Turned 26 (no insurance) and had an emergency room visit

    Posted: 30 May 2021 05:37 PM PDT

    Hi reddit,

    Health insurance question:

I recently turned 26 on the 19th (thus, I was kicked off my father's health insurance) and had an unexpected emergency room visit a week later I could not avoid. I applied for Medi-Cal a month ago and while it says I qualify, it is still pending.

I'm currently unemployed and cannot pay the near-$4000 dollar charge I know is coming. Am I completely screwed, or is there something I can do to minimize the damage? I'm terrified I'll end up having to file for bankruptcy.

    Thanks.

    EDIT: I'm from Orange, California.

Had a hot water geyser in my bathroom bc the sink handle broke. Not sure if I should report it. I have a $1000 deductible.

    Posted: 31 May 2021 04:13 AM PDT

It was only going off for about three minutes bf we got it shut off but crap it was a lot of water. Im afraid I'm going to wind up with mold-the floor is linoleum. The vanity is shot, bc the water was so hot I guess (and also it's old and junk. I haven't lived here that long). The bathroom door is ruined.

What I don't know: the water is under the linoleum floor and made the floor outside the bathroom buckle a tiny bit. It also got under my kitchen cabinets and I don't know how to dry it or how much is under there.

What if they screw me over and say they aren't going to fix the stuff? Will my insurance will go up even if they don't pay? I'm a middle aged female and anytime there is an issue with cats, home repair or home maintenance I get screwed. And all I have in my savings is $1000. I don't know what to do.

    Insuring business investments

    Posted: 31 May 2021 03:27 AM PDT

hi everyone, I own a business and have used some of the profits to make investments. I wanted to ask if there is an insurance product or insurance provider that can insure these types of investments? They are gold with an online company, plus stock. The company and its investments are located and registered in the USA.

    Thanks in advance

    Edited to add location.

[NC] Reminder to Shop Around for Insurance Rates

    Posted: 30 May 2021 11:30 PM PDT

GEICO auto insurance customer for 3 years. Had to cancel since the semi-annual renewal offer increased the premiums by $110.

Saved about $300 by switching to another carrier (top-rated insurance carrier, e.g., the Amica/Erie/PEMCO/NJM tier) for even better coverage with lower deductibles.

The only things changed during the quotes and rates were my age and the car's age.

No credit score, vehicle, garaging address, claims, employment, use case, or driving record changes.

    • $853 rate before the renewal.

    • $963 renewal offer (Competitor's New Customer Offer: $657)

    • $919 win-back rate @ 8 days after cancellation

    • $715 win-back rate @ 35 days after cancellation

    • $597 New Customer Rate @ 5 months after cancellation (brand new quote from scratch)

Being a loyal customer meant nothing to GEICO, my premiums increased every 6 months, including during the 15% giveback promotion in 2020.

Always shop around before renewal! I got better coverage with a better carrier at a lower rate by shopping around.

    Auto-Accident, Hit Turning Right

    Posted: 30 May 2021 11:34 AM PDT

    Hello,

I was recently in an auto accident where I was in the right lane, turning right, on a green light. The other driver was in the middle lane, going straight. As I was turning right, they switched into my lane and hit me. My left front bumper is heavily dented and my left front headlight is broken.

When we got out of the car, she admitted fault and said I was in her blind zone. I took down her insurance information, called her insurance company shortly after and filed a claim.

This was Friday afternoon, and they told me they would get back to me by Tuesday/Wednesday.

I am a little afraid since I didn't file a police report (it was in a shopping square/private property) and I don't have a dashcam. However, she admitted complete fault verbally.

This accident's gotten me anxious and it would be helpful to hear what I should expect coming up. Is it likely her insurance will admit full liability and pay for the damages?

I am located in North Carolina, if that provides any further clarification.

    Vandalism minor damage

    Posted: 31 May 2021 12:19 AM PDT

Someone tried to break into my leased car - shattered passenger side window and made a dime sized dent with a puncture hole in rear door panel. Have a police report. I'm in NJ with GEICO comprehensive $500 deductible. Window replacement is $400 as per Safelite quote so almost doesn't make sense to go through insurance? The puncture hole is what I'm concerned about the most. It's small enough to look like a regular dent, but it is a hole and this is a lease - not sure if I'll get charged when I return the car. And overall who wants to drive with a blemish on a new car. Would insurance even approve repair/replacement of the door panel?

Should I get additional liability protection for my Zipcar?

    Posted: 30 May 2021 03:54 PM PDT

I do not have my own car insurance, but I occasionally drive Zipcars (based in Boston, MA). It occurred to me recently that I don't know what the liability insurance situation is; the Zipcar membership agreement makes a reference to liability insurance, but you also have the option to pay for additional liability coverage as you're reserving the car. What does that additional liability coverage bring to the table over the standard membership, and should I pay for it?

Drunk driver hit and ran my parked car, Im new to insurance claims and what to do, i just want to know what to expect or what to do.

    Posted: 30 May 2021 09:48 PM PDT

It was almost 3 in the morning when I heard a loud bang outside, i went to look and my parked car(was parked on the side of a residential road legally) was about 15ft from where it was originally parked with a massively destroyed backside(trunk is destroyed, muffler detached. It looks like a total loss) by a driver in a truck who fled from the scene, luckily there was a witness neighbor who saw what happened and the truck take off, called the police right around when i called and when the truck collided with my car, his license plate got left on scene for even further evidence. So i got a witness and his license plate on scene.

The cop showed up and looked around the neighborhood, i guess the driver didn't get far because he ran into another parked car further down the road and the truck stalled out.

The cop showed back up after some time and gave me a case number and the drivers insurance policy number(USAA insurance)

Im not really sure what to do from now on, my car didnt have insurance on it but would i even need insurance on it? I wasn't driving or anything, he was completely at fault, even more so for taking off from the scene.

Im going to try and call usaa tomorrow when the offices are open but i dont really know what to expect or what to say/ask

    Edit: state is in texas

Possible counter-suit 2 years after accident?

    Posted: 30 May 2021 07:56 PM PDT

So about 2 years ago I was involved in a somewhat disputed accident that resulted in personal injury to myself. After bringing a lawsuit to the other drivers insurance company I received a settlement of about 25 grand and went on with my life. It wasn't an easy settlement as I mentioned because the accident was disputed fault and I confirmed there were PI's following me on multiple occasions. About 6 months ago I received a call from my insurance company saying the other drivers insurance company was trying to sue them. I told them I already received a settlement and gave them my lawyers number in case they needed anything but haven't heard back since. Then just today at my work I am pretty sure I noticed another PI type figure doing the same shady stuff I caught them doing 2 years ago (trying to record video). Anyways, my question is am I just being paranoid? If my case already settled, am I still at risk for anything happening?

Navigating insurance after not at-fault accident in brand new car

    Posted: 30 May 2021 12:11 PM PDT

I recently got into a not at fault accident in a brand new Audi Q3 that I purchased a month ago in North Carolina. There is significant damage to a portion of the front bumper just below the headlight, but the rest of the car is fine. I have a police report verifying it was not my fault and my insurer has also confirmed this will not be considered an at-fault accident. I have filed a claim with my insurer to start subrogation, as I have collision insurance. I am now wondering if there anything else I should be doing? I am very concerned about lost value, as it is a new car.

How do I switch to my own car insurance when buying my first car?

    Posted: 30 May 2021 06:08 PM PDT

I am 21 and currently live with my parents in NJ. I am on their car insurance that they have through allstate as I drive their cars sometimes. I am going to be moving to Pittsburgh this summer and I plan on purchasing new car then. Can I still be under my parent's insurance when I buy a new car or will I have to buy my own insurance (neither parent will be on the title)?

If I have to buy my own, what is the process of buying car insurance when purchasing a car (I'll be financing it)? Any idea how much I'd be paying for insurance in Pittsburgh, PA for a new car worth about $20k with only a careless driving ticket on my NJ record in the past 4 years? Any other tips or advice would be much appreciated too.

edit: I also have 720+ credit

    Whole Life vs. Term

    Posted: 30 May 2021 05:28 AM PDT

We have a debate going on in our house. One of us wants to continue with term life insurance and the other wants to switch to whole life. I'd love to hear your opinions and reasons for why which one is better.

Some context, were in our low to mid 30s, have two kids, and overall are healthy.

Car Insurance: Right of Way question

    Posted: 30 May 2021 11:32 AM PDT

I'm not sure if this is the right forum, but I'll start here. Recently, I was involved in an accident which stemmed from me leaving a business plaza turning left onto a road with two lanes on each side.

As I pulled out just about to cross the yellow lines to my lane, a vehicle driving along the inner lane on their side (going right) sped by and I hit their back passenger door/ tire. It's my understanding that I'm always to yield for oncoming traffic on a main road, but there's a complication:

A third car had been in the right lane closest to this plaza, as if they were about to pull in, but with no turn signal on. Completely parked motionless on a main road for over a minute, thus blocking my view of the inner lane for the about 10 feet closest to me. After a minute of waiting and the motionless vehicle honking, I leave, and at this moment the victim pulls around said blocking car the same time as I. When I'd pulled out, she was behind the motionless vehicle also waiting.

Who's majority at fault? (Liability wise).

Minor damage from an at-fault rear end incident. Should I go through insurance?

    Posted: 30 May 2021 02:52 PM PDT

    CA, United States driver:

I'm on my dad's insurance (first accident, so never occurred to me to get off) as an "other driver". I recently rear ended someone with minor damage to both vehicles (bumper dents, paint scratch, no injuries) and am wondering if I should go through insurance. The other party is willing to settle this outside of insurance, but I'm slightly hesitant in resolving this informally. The quote they got for their repair (~$1800) seemed to be really high and have included pre-existing damage (damage near the top of the trunk I couldn't imagine the accident causing). A few questions:

    1. Should I continue to work with this party to settle this outside of insurance? Would it be worth it in the long run in terms of record and increased premiums?
    2. My dad is the named insured and I'm an "other driver". How will this impact his premiums? He's also covering two other cars on his policy
    3. I'm working to get my own insurance policy after this settles down. Will this claim/accident follow me and affect shopping around for insurance?

    Primary vs secondary help!

    Posted: 30 May 2021 02:10 PM PDT

I'm freaking out a little. I've been on my husbands Kaiser policy for years. Earlier this year I didn't opt out of my employers HSA plan through UHC, which is high deductible and I was under the impression I could just use it for HSA. I just had a baby last month and am now receiving bills and letters from UHC about out of network coverage... I contacted Kaiser and they said UHC is listed as my primary insurance. Can I switch them?? Kaiser would fully cover the cost of delivery, which is what I was told when I registered to give birth there. But the UHC plan is stating a bill of $25k, $18k of which I'd be owing. I also had complications that resulted in 2 ER visits and another 3 day hospital stay, so I'm anticipating another large bill... I'm in california if that matters.

Am I responsible for all ER visit costs?

    Posted: 30 May 2021 10:14 AM PDT

I had an ER visit this week. I have minimum coverage through Kaiser. I needed stitches and my doctors office didn't have availability so he said to go to the ER (no urgent cares near me). My deductible and out of pocket max are both $8550. Does that mean I will be responsible for all ER costs up until $8550? My minimum coverage shows I'm covered for preventative care like screening and such, but I don't think it covers anything else. Any insight into this and what I can expect?

I'm in Northern CA and have minimum coverage hmo with Kaiser

[MA, VA/MD/DC] On my parents' Car Insurance (MetLife). Am I still covered if I drive my friend's car in VA, MD, DC?

    Posted: 30 May 2021 09:32 AM PDT

tl;dr: I'm in MA, on my parents' car insurance, MetLife. When I visit my friends in VA, MD, DC, am I still covered? If so, is the coverage less or the same? [Unlikely to do car rental.]

Age 40, in MA, living with my parents. I don't own a car, so my parents put me on their car insurance so I can drive their cars occasionally.

When I visit friends in VA, MD, and Washington, DC, I will likely drive a friend's car. [Can't rent a car since I don't know how long I'll be drive. May use Uber] My friends have good cars, but not BMW. But there are lots of expensive cars on the road. Does my parents' insurance cover me in case I get into an accident? What happens if I hit an expensive car?

If I need to call the Insurance Company, how do I phrase this? I don't want to get extra insurance unnecessarily, but do want to be covered.

    Thanks!

What is the minimum I should accept in terms of settlement?

    Posted: 30 May 2021 06:04 AM PDT

I am going to make a long story short:

    State of NY

I was at a complete stop, was rear ended by at fault driver at very high speed

    My car was totaled

I suffered back and shoulder pain immediately after never had any issues before

Had been in physical therapy for about 9 months consecutively

Arthroscopic surgery was recommended on my shoulder

Got the Arthroscopic surgery now looking at another 3 months or so of PT

I want to know based on experience, where is a good point to settle financially, this will be a lifelong issue and already it has ruined a lot of opportunities for me.

Thanks in advance, and if there are more details I can add for a better answer that would be great! Thanks!
