Manufacturing a plastic item - how to?

    Posted: 03 May 2021 11:25 AM PDT

Hi all! I have an "invention" that I'm trying to figure out how to manufacture. I can't say exactly what it is, but let's say it's comparable to a plastic fishing tackle box. Can anyone point me in the direction of what kind of process I should look into for manufacturing that? I've been reading about injection molding but it seems really expensive to start up and it's best for 100k+ runs. Just starting out I'd probably want to do just a few thousand, I think. I'm very new to this area (an accounting manager by trade) so any help or guidance is appreciated!

The Build In Public Cheatsheet: how people go from 100 to 20,000+ on Twitter, while documenting their entrepreneurial journey

    Posted: 03 May 2021 10:57 AM PDT

    Hi /r/startup,

I'm Ch Daniel - you might've seen me moderating /r/SaaS, if you've ever been there.

If any of you are at least remotely interested in Building In Public, I've just launched the Build In Public Cheatsheet

Your support would go a long way!

    The problem - why

It's very simple: I'm running my main business, which has got tens of thousands of paying customers and ~6,000,000+ all-time viewers.

✓ I heard about building in public a few years ago

✓ It wasn't for my main business' audience

✓ Recently, however, I started building a side-product for my main business: it's meant to help SaaS founders find&set the perfect pricing

✓ The main business felt natural, to be BiP now, as the side-product can benefit from it

✓ Because of that, I wanted to build in public this new tool called PriceUnlock

And I am! But I was clueless and afraid that I won't know what to post.

    The solution

The Cheatsheet initially represented my notes, but as I shared it with others, it got some positive feedback: it was not only wanted, but also needed.

I made a few extra steps (which I wouldn't have done if it was just a private note) and here we are.

I also plan to expand on it, as the responsibility is on my shoulders. I hope those 'internal' notes would help you get started, or help you become a better builder in public.

    The how

Don't forget to duplicate the Cheatsheet, delete what's not relevant and make it your own.

Once inside, you'll be able to find:

✓ A list of different types of posts, as well as practical examples (tweets, screenshots etc)

✓ A public list of those who build in public

✓ You can join the list as well, there's a form inside

✓ A board to plan your BiP journey

    ✓ Principles of BiP

✓ A list of tools for BiP

    ➕ Many more

I'd love to know how you'd make this better, what else you would need or any kind of feedback👀

Need Advice: I have original intellectual property to sell/ hire out and am looking for advice about which sites would be good to promote on?

    Posted: 03 May 2021 10:02 AM PDT

As the title says. I have a completely original concept that is ready to go to market and hopefully give me a bit of an income stream but I am at a loss on where to market it. I've made some posts on Linkedin and the various subs here and am hoping that you may know some other places? In a nutshell, it's a way to analyse existing systems in 3D using WebGL in real-time with projection facilities.

To Sign-up or not to Sign-up

    Posted: 03 May 2021 10:30 AM PDT

    Hello fellow Redditors,

My name is Francisco, I am the Co-Founder of Super Agent. We auto accept/reject cookies based on user preferences.

We are still testing our Beta and just gathering user feedback, but right now I am struggling to decide on our biggest bottleneck.

Basically, until now we have always asked users to Register. This allows us to share the user preferences between various browsers or devices with all the data being End2End encrypted.

However, I feel like the registration step is a hurdle, for 2 reasons:

    - Users don't know us yet, so no reason to trust us.

    - Signing up takes time, plug & play is better and easier.

I see no huge advantage on keeping the user accounts except for moving away from being "just" an extension, and having the cross-device compatibility, especially once we launch mobile.

    Thoughts?

The business of working on your business - how to do?

    Posted: 03 May 2021 01:05 PM PDT

Hey all, I'm stuck in the non-enviable (well, better than the alternative, I guess) position of having a bunch of clients and a full calendar, however, I don't have enough clients paying me what I want to get paid. (Before you say "just raise your rates," I know these clients are not in a position to do so, and I've already broached the topic to a point where I'm ready to cut bait and move forward without them.)

I'm in food business consulting and work with a number of restaurants and CPG companies on menu development, recipe development, optimizing processes, etc, etc etc, basically, the whole gamut.

I'm realizing that I'm drowning in a lot of not super profitable work, but I'm hesitant to cut these clients out before I have replacements. I do have a list of possible contacts, but I'm wondering if anyone yet has found the solution to reaching out to possible resources without taking up too much billable time. I'm wondering if there's a process I'm missing, if there's an agency I can hire, or if ultimately, I just need to suck it up and take the time off from clients to do it myself.

    Thanks!

    My first Build-In-Public Post

    Posted: 03 May 2021 12:37 PM PDT

    Hey,

I decided to build my product publicly, in order to provide value to anyone who might find this useful. I'm thrilled to announce my first product and it's called Mist. It's a Chrome Extension that helps you practice mindfulness without detaching from your work.

    What was the problem?

A few weeks ago, I was listening to sounds of nature on Spotify, because I have found that this increases my focus. I noticed that I had to constantly switch apps, in order to listen to relaxing sounds while I work. From there this idea came into my mind

    What are the benefits?

    • The user doesn't have to constantly switch apps to listen to relaxing sounds or meditate.
    • The user can practice mindfulness, by meditating, without fully detaching from their work.

Here are some brief about the product

    • It's easy to use since it integrates with Chrome
    • Guided meditations created by meditation experts.
    • Sounds of Nature and LoFi Music to increase focus and productivity.

What do you do when there’s nothing left to do?

    Posted: 03 May 2021 07:55 AM PDT

Greetings fellow business owners. I'm in online business.

Usually I have enough stuff to do to fill most of my day with work and stay busy until I call it a day and go sleep. Everyday.

Or if I continuously have more than 4 free hours a day, I'll just start/test a new business so I keep myself busy.

Usually I wouldn't have more than 2-3 hours free and I can wait that out or do some basic stuff like having a meal.

But today I'm waiting for something and there's nothing to do until what I'm waiting happens.

So I've got no work for like the whole day, this boredom is kinda driving me mad, like.. what am I supposed to do?

What do you guys do on one of those days with no work?

I could read but that'll take maximum 3 hours, what's there to do with the rest of the day?

I have zero clue what others do all day.

So, any suggestions? What do you do when you're not working?

    (Productive of course)

    Cheers

Using the content of content creators from Youtube in the education section of my startup?

    Posted: 03 May 2021 10:46 AM PDT

Hi everyone I have a question. I am building a SaaS startup. I would like to create an education section. I understand that I should create my own content. I want to have courses. However Youtube already exists and their already exists tons of free content. Am I legally allowed to just post these videos on my website? If it is legally allowed is it considered "ghetto"? I want to be progressive in the sense that we should be utilizing the fact that the internet has tons of free content. Any reason I can't do this?

A new Etsy shop and I need help to get word out about my work!

    Posted: 03 May 2021 10:42 AM PDT

Hi everyone I am a aspiring artist who has recently joined Instagram and Pinterest to showcase some of my works. I recently opened a Etsy shop for some of my works to be downloaded as digital downloads for people to print to size etc as they wish. I am really struggling with getting word out there. I constantly post on Instagram and have under 70 followers (most of which are other artists!) I try to comment on other people's works etc to try and get others to look at my page etc. Does anyone have any help or ideas of ways to help grown my Instagram and more importantly get more traffic through to my Etsy shop? With Etsy you can only use 13 tags for your work so I have used them all!

I appreciate all your thoughts and suggestions:D

    Web Developers and Charlatans

    Posted: 03 May 2021 09:02 AM PDT

    Hey Everyone,

Just want to share my experience in my journey to secure good web development talent. Our systems became more complex over the years and over time freelancer sites like UpWork and Fiverr were not appropriate for the long-term projects we had in mind. Along the way I did add a few folks to our team with decades of meaningful experience but it was very much pure luck that we got them in the first place.

    Dev Shops

I then had this bright idea of getting involved with Development agencies. No matter what approach I used, they always failed me and could not measure up to our in-house team. I first tried being economical and went with an agency out of India with offices in the U.S. -- that was a failure to launch; the quality of the work was piss poor, even though the developers seem to have been vetted and tested, etc.

    Expensive Dev Shops

I then decided maybe I should go with an established firm so I signed up with a firm that has been in business for 40+ years. During the process their team collapsed. They failed to follow protocol for a migration and it was the first time in the 7 years I've been operating that a migration had to be aborted. They simply failed to follow all the necessary steps to ensure its success -- worse, although I had a hunch that morning as to why it aborted, they didn't reveal the reason until at the end of the day.

So now I found myself stuck where choosing an established expensive firm was no better than going with a more economical outsourced firm.

    Criminal Dev Shops

Afterwards, I dealt with a Dev Shop that supposedly had great reviews, a large team of people and a wealth of experience. I spent 7 months negotiating the terms and explaining what needs to be done. Then they spent 10 months developing. It was then revealed they admittedly did not perform any QA, although the contract called for it. Moreover, they sold me something with no optimized back end. The nightmare really started when I refused to pay and they proceeded to hack into our systems and cause us havoc. It was the worst experience I ever had. I reported them to the FBI.

    What's ahead...

Now I decided whether I'm working with a recruiter such as TopTal, a freelancer, established firm or anything in between I will be sending them assessments that are benchmarked to their peers. So far, these are the results I've had.

    1. One firm flat out declined to give their developers and assessment.
    2. One developer who is supposed to have 12 years of experience took all 4 assessment tests, barely passed 2 of them (as in score 50% and 55% respectively), failed the other two and his speed was assessed as slower than average. This is a candidate with a 4 page resume that looks like a godsend on paper.

    Tips if you're hiring developers

So, here's what I learned for those looking to hire developers:

    1. Hire SLOW -- Extremely SLOW. Take your time. Chances are they are misrepresenting half the things they say they can do and once hired they'll blame you for not giving them the right specs.
    2. ASSESS THEM - I can't stress it enough. You must assess each and every person working on your project. They must be assessed for speed and accuracy on the subject matter. The dev shop has no interest in assessing them unless they can market them to you. Think about it: you start off talking to a sales person who typically has no background in the languages you need. He'll rattle off a few top level terms but can't discuss anything deeply. This person is promising you the world but is not qualified to vouch for the developers and likely never met them in person before. The buck stops with you. Your account manager is just there to make sure they can bill you accordingly. The project manager is just there to make sure the developers follow specs. Everyone at the firm wants to bill you for a developer with 10+ years of experience even if they work on a 3rd year level. If they don't want to take an assessment, that's a major red flag.
    3. Spend time drafting the right contract: I'd spend about 1 day per page in going over any contracts they send you and revise anything that will even slightly inconvenience you. Involve a business analyst if necessary in the contract process. Set a firm deadline for deliverables. Discuss it with them first. If they are late, then must give you a credit. If you allow the contract to be fluid then they may take several months past the deadline to deliver.
    4. Disregard everything that doesn't matter. Things such as reviews, social signals, age of the shop are irrelevant. What is relevant is that the developers are COMPETENT and understand what you want from them. You can end up with a scenario of signing up with an established firm but an incompetent team.

Hope this helps guys! Remember: no need to dive head first with a dev shop. Their chief interest is in extracting every penny they can from your pocket, collecting as many deposits from clients as they could and having the most flexible terms in their contracts. If they don't respect your time, cannot provide you with assessments and do not allow you to assess their people, they are not the firm for you. Move on.

How I got 100 email subscribers in two weeks

    Posted: 03 May 2021 07:16 AM PDT

Just two weeks after launching a landing page, I reached 100 email subscribers for my new Squarespace plugin called Spark. Not just 100 random people - these people are interested in my product.

Do you want 100 subscribers too?

    Well, I'll help you!

First, let me ask you two questions:

    1. Does your offering sound interesting?
    2. Do you have a target group?

If your answer was "yes" to both the questions above, you're very likely to succeed. For example, I used "Spark - Get superpowers in Squarespace" as the heading for my product, which caught many people's interest.

Now let's talk about the good stuff. If you have a great offering, your target group will probably be very interested in hearing about it. So basically, what you should do is to find niche groups and talk about your offering there.

The places I used to reach out to my target group are pretty straightforward. Since my product is a Squarespace plugin, I focused on finding places where Squarespace creators were:

    • Squarespace official forum
    • One Squarespace Facebook group
    • One Squarespace Subreddit

What I did was writing one post on the Facebook group and one on the subreddit. On the Squarespace forum, I made about 50 posts helping others out (with a link to Spark in my signature).

    Here are my stats:

    • Squarespace official forum - 24 subscribers from 50 posts that took me a couple of hours.
    • One Squarespace Facebook group - 41 subscribers from one post that took me 10 minutes.
    • One Squarespace Subreddit - 35 subscribers from one post that took me 10 minutes.

To make sure as many people as possible become a subscriber, optimizing your landing page is crucial. There are a lot of good tutorials online to follow. If you are interested to see what my landing page looks like, visit the Spark plugin here.

I hope that you found this post helpful :)

How to stand out from the other candidates

We asked recruitment and career experts what makes one candidate stand out over the others — here's what they said.

If you've been applying to a number of jobs with little luck, it could be that your resume is getting lost in the pack of the seemingly countless other applicants you're competing with. That's why it's all the more important to find ways to distinguish yourself in a compelling way.

Looking to sell my eCommerce site which sells vitamins, based in the UK

    Posted: 03 May 2021 04:18 AM PDT

    Hello guys,

as you can see from the title, I am looking to sell my website which sells vitamins in the UK. The reason for selling is that I simply do not have the time to work on the site anymore due to running my other offline business. The site is not live as it is not quite finished yet however most of the ground work has been done.

The site uses a company to ship and print on demand labels to source the product. I have spent a few hundred pounds on setting things up etc. I wouldn't mind selling at this value as at the moment I do not see myself having the time to finish everything off.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to sell the site, or even if you are interested?

Thanks in advance for any advice!
