Posted: 09 May 2021 07:12 PM PDT (Mods: I do not know what to flair this. Please let me know if you need me to edit.) Hi. It's been its about 4 years since I made the post asking what to do when my abuse by my father came to light. I feel like the original post generated a lot of interesting talking points about mandated reporters and abuse in general, and I felt like the people who contributed to it deserved an update on what happened to me. I want to thank all who commented for their help, and I wanted to assure all who were worried that I'm okay. So here is what happened: I ended up being questioned by a victim advocacy center, and I told them the truth about what happened. After the questioning, I went home and tried to kill myself by downing everything in my mother's medicine cabinet. I lived but this landed me in a hospital for several weeks. The investigation against my abuser ended up not going further for a variety of reasons. Several people in the comments questioned why I did not want my abuser charged and whether it was even ethical for me to not want my abuser to be charged. I would like everyone to keep in mind that I was an abused child when I wrote that post, and I'm not here to debate whether this was the correct viewpoint. At the time, I truly believed my abuser was not a danger to anyone else and that he had no access to any other victims. My justification for trying to protect my abuser was that I felt like it was the best choice for my family, and when I read that original post, all I can see is a child who was so desperate to protect their family that they were willing to end their own life over it. Plus, my abuser is dead now. He died only about 6 months after I made that post, and me and each of my siblings received a damn good payout from it. So what ended up happening to me? Well, I lived through it and eventually graduated and went to college. Later this year I will be in my first semester of law school which will be payed for by my abuser's money. My siblings have all pretty much graduated and started their own lives and are no longer dependent on the things he left. I haven't decided exactly what area of law I'm going to go into, but I am considering doing something with children so I can protect other victims ya know :). I've been in therapy for years to help deal with my abuse, and I'm currently engaged to someone who treats me really, really well. For the first time in my life, I feel like I understand what it is like to be loved unconditionally. Thus, the point of this update is to assure everyone who commented that I'm doing okay and to thank them for trying to help a very scared little girl. My final message to all of you is to listen to the children in your life and to do what you can to protect them. Love them. Keep them safe. Thanks and goodnight. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 10 May 2021 07:52 AM PDT [PENNSYLVANIA] I did a telehealth appointment with a wholly unprofessional nurse the other night who - for some reason I cannot explain, put in my aftercare summary that I told her that my PCP SEXUALLY ASSAULTED ME. I have NEVER SAID THIS, I just MET my new PCP and he's wonderful (and I've only talked to him on the phone); my past PCP, while I wasn't super fond of her, has never done such a thing to me, nor have ANY of my past PCPs within this practice. My new PCP is a resident and I don't want to have such an accusation pinned on him when he literally never did anything wrong and I am freaking out because I don't know how to handle this. I just got this new doc and he's great and this is... not good. What the hell do I do? I am extremely concerned this is (obviously) going to cause my new PCP to push my care to another resident. I already wrote the PCP a letter explaining that he did nothing and I accused him of nothing and to have his supervisors contact me, but this is definitely going to adversely affect my care and I am freaking out (because I really like this resident as he seems to be a great doc, and I also WOULD NEVER WANT TO DERAIL SOMEONE'S CAREER BASED ON A FALSE ACCUSATION). I am beyond mortified and don't know what to do. Should I get a lawyer? I just... I don't even know. [link] [comments] |
My soon-to-be-ex husband is holding our 2 year old son from me until I sign HIS divorce papers. Posted: 10 May 2021 04:22 AM PDT I'm in Florida. My STBX husband took my son on Saturday morning. This was his weekend and I was supposed to get him back this morning which we have verbally agreed to and have done for the last year. Last night, he sends me a packet of divorce papers for a county at least 5+ hours away that you can supposedly mail everything to and they will complete the divorce instead of having to go to court. I am not signing anything for another county. If we need to change things later, I'm not going 5 hours away to court. Also, the papers he sent me states that he has majority custody, keeps my son for every single holiday, and that his address is my sons main living address. I told him I am not signing any of this and asked him to please go to a lawyer together in our area to sit and come up with something equal that makes sense. He told me he is now not bringing my son back to me until I sign all of this, and he will just go for 100% custody since I am "being difficult." I need help like immediately. My son is two years old and he is using him as a pawn to get me to bow down and do what he wants. My son just got out of the hospital this week and it was an extremely traumatic experience for all of us, and now on top of it my ex wants to hold him from me only because I won't sign his papers. Update: I have a lawyer now and they have calmed me way down and made me feel much better about the situation. Thank you for your comments and help. [link] [comments] |
Found my car after it was towed at parking lot a mile away Posted: 10 May 2021 07:23 AM PDT Location is Texas So I parked my car at a friends apartment, I parked in his space which he assured me would be fine, it was not as i came out 2 hours later to find it gone, and the apartment says I didn't have a parking sticker on it so it doesn't matter than I was in my friends reserved spot, fine I get it. Now I ask him to give me a ride home as It's Saturday and my bank won't be open till Monday and I have a max 300 withdrawal a day at the ATM so I can't do much about the tow right now. On the way we pass a parking lot, it's for a now abandoned fast food joint, and I see my car sitting their along with serval other cars. I'm guessing the tow company stages car's there for pickup later to their lot, seems underhanded of them, but I've got my keys and we pull in, I get in my car and drive off. Now my question is did I commit a crime, could I be charged with anything illegal, so far I haven't been contacted by the police or tow company, but my wife is positive I may have broken a law. Posted: 10 May 2021 10:40 AM PDT Throwaway acc. I live in MN. I signed a lease for a year at the end of February. The day after signing the lease my landlord informed me that my downstairs neighbor and his son have master keys to all apartments including mine. I was uncomfortable but tried to deal with it. The father (male, 70s) started leaving poetry pinned to my door (did this 3 times and I still have the notes saved, they say his name). He also comes up multiple times a week and knocks on my door to talk and will move my packages. The son creeps everyone out, I haven't interacted with him much but talking to the other girls in the building he will stare and ogle them routinely. I've tried to get used to it but I still feel very uncomfortable. I'm a single woman who lives alone, I'm the only woman who lives alone in the building and they know that. I went through the lease and there is nothing at all about them having keys and access to my apartment. I was not informed until after I had signed the lease (if I had known I would not have signed the lease, honestly). My sister says we should email him and tell him I'm either changing the lock and only the landlord is allowed to have a key, and if he doesn't allow that then I want out of my lease as this was not disclosed and I don't feel safe in my home knowing two grown men below me have unlimited access to my apartment. Do I have a leg to stand on with this request? [link] [comments] |
Arrested because my neighbors didn't know me. Posted: 09 May 2021 10:30 PM PDT Short and simple:. I rented a storage unit that I visited about once every few months. One day after visiting, a unit the next aisle over was burglarized. The neighbors didn't know who I was so they reported me as suspicious. The police used my license tag and photo to identify me and issued a warrant for my arrest. A month later, I was arrested in another county where I was working. I was jailed for three days, released on a personal recognizance bond and lost my job as a result. You would think the story would end here, once the mistake the police made was known, but it's now been over seven months, there's been no trial, the charges haven't been dismissed. The evidence is a video of me sitting in a chair in front of my rental unit. I filled a complaint with the police department against the detective and the police sent it back unsubstantiated. So, um. Where do I do from here? [link] [comments] |
Wife inseminated herself with donor sperm Posted: 09 May 2021 05:20 PM PDT Wife and I (Arizona) have tried to have children for years but cannot due to issues on my end. She recently informed me that she went to a fertility clinic and got herself knocked up with donor sperm. I'm all for having a kid but not like this. What can I do? Will I be responsible for this? Landlord breaking lease before move in date Posted: 10 May 2021 08:20 AM PDT After signing the lease the landlord is changing his mind and doesnt want to rent anymore. Move was in 25 days. They have 1.5 month rent deposit. I had secured a daycare for the kids because of that rental location and put deposit on the spots. This is becoming a huge mess. Its in Connecticut, what are some things I can do. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 10 May 2021 08:09 AM PDT Hi everyone, I received a notice in the mail yesterday that a car I had sold for parts to a mechanic was found abandoned on the street in a nearby county. Apparently the mechanics never transferred the title into their name. According to the notice, the car was towed several days ago and the city is keeping it in storage. There may be a lien on the car for those fees. I have a phone record of the mechanic stating that they would buy the car and pay 1K. How can I tell/show the city that I am no longer the rightful owner of this vehicle. Can I use the phone record as proof? What steps should I take to ensure I am not on the hook for the towing and storage fees? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 10 May 2021 08:46 AM PDT My friend borrowed my gun to go target shooting. While at the range he shot another person on the range due to his unsafe handling of the gun. My gun is now being held by the police as evidence and I don't have much expectation of getting it back anytime soon. Would I have any success suing my friend for the cost of my gun? My ex is refusing to give me the medication my daughter needs! Posted: 10 May 2021 10:13 AM PDT My 16 year old daughter was staying with her dad, who lives about 100 miles from us, for a few weeks since they are still doing online school. After 2 weeks, she ended up in the hospital because she said she was feeling suicidal! She spent 2 weeks in an inpatient mental health facility for children. She was diagnosed with ADHD and depression. The same day she was discharged, he took her to him Mom's house which is in my little town, so he could go to Las Vegas for his birthday. She wanted to come home, so I picked her up and all hell broke loose! He is not happy that she wanted her Mom and only sent here with 7 days off her depression meds and didn't send the ADHD meds at all. I asked him for the pharmacy and prescriptions number so I can get them. He told me that she is my "problem" now and I can find my own Dr for her and deal with getting her insurance. He doesn't pay child support, but our divorce agreement states that he is responsible for their insurance/medical care. What should I do? Her prescription was already filled, so I can't just get a refill (she has no refills), he refuses to give me the other 3 weeks of the meds that he got filled for her and I don't know what to do! I called the Dr she was seeing and have a message in for him to call me back, but she needs her medications! [link] [comments] |
(NY) Divorce was settled and spouse received payment but they’re now refusing to sign the papers Posted: 10 May 2021 09:38 AM PDT What can I do here? It's been half a year and I thought I was waiting on a backed up court system to grant me a Judgement but instead it's my ex-spouse refusing to sign the documents needed to even present it to the judge for approval. I'm sickened by this..we have a fully executed Settlement Agreement, I paid an arm and leg to my ex per the terms. Now I find out they took the money and continue to do whatever it takes to delay the process. [link] [comments] |
(MA) Can my employer deny me prenatal appointments? Posted: 10 May 2021 11:02 AM PDT Located in Massachusetts. I recently found out I'm pregnant (yay!). I spoke with my supervisor right away and had the following conversation:
I called the office she told me to and got a phone appointment- with a doctor I don't know, to discuss a situation I've never been in. I'm not 100% sure I even want to go to this office due to a bad experience years ago (that my boss doesn't know about). I also don't believe they have prenatal appointments after 4 pm and my work hours are 7 am - 4:30 pm. [link] [comments] |
Got in accident, airbags didn’t deploy, appears dealership ignored recall Posted: 10 May 2021 10:10 AM PDT I got in an accident on the highway yesterday with my husband, in Virginia. We got hit by a dumb ass in a sedan not paying attention and smashed into another sedan in front of us. Caused 4 cars to hit into each other, everyone pulled over. Thankfully everyone is ok, although I'm in bed today with what I think is a concussion (have a teleheath appointment with my doctor later today) and we both have some whiplash/back pain. The police came and the guy admitted guilt, so we're in the clear insurance wise (cross your fingers). Unfortunately looks like our car (purchased used last year, it's a 2019) may be totaled. Right after the accident the screen in our car popped up and said "error: airbag malfunction" and connected us with emergency services. I looked online, and there was a recall for this exact airbag issue for the car in 2019. We purchased the car from the dealership the summer of 2020. Do we have a case to sue the dealership for negligence? I left a message at the dealership yesterday and they haven't called back yet, but do they need to be informed before we move forward with a lawyer? Not sure what we should be doing or if anything could be done, any help would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Never received money from sale of house Posted: 10 May 2021 09:27 AM PDT I am in NYC. So to start the story in 2012 my grandfather passed away. He owned a small condo which (I'm pretty sure) he owned solely and him and my grandmother lived there. Me, my brother and mom also lived there with them since 2009. Then in 2013 my grandmother passed away. She left the condo to my mom and my uncle. I am pretty sure the plan at that time was to sell it and the money would've gotten split between my mom and uncle. The next year 2014 my mom passed away. We had moved out of the condo about a month before she died. I was only 16 at the time so to be honest I didn't know a lot of the details about the will and anything else involved. It was told to me that since she died her part of the house would go to me and my brother which we would both spilt. My uncle wasn't really a part of our lives much so we didn't speak. I believe about a year went by and my uncle made some renovations and the condo was sold. Don't know exactly how much. My aunt on my fathers side was kind of handling everything for me and my brother and I remember one night we were supposed to go to meet with the lawyer who was handling everything regarding the will and whatnot. A date was set up and we went to the office and no one was there and she called the lawyer and quite honestly I don't remember if she spoke to him or not. To my own fault up until now nothing has been done about contacting another lawyer to see about starting the process to collect any money I'm owed, if any. To be completely honest I wouldn't be upset if I'm not entitled to anything after waiting this long, but if I still am obviously I just want to finally get this process over with. I don't know why I've never done this sooner, there's not really a reason, just living everyday life working 6 days a week. Can anyone give me advice on what kind of actual lawyer I'd need to contact. I've thought about going the route of just straight up asking my uncle but I don't know where he lives and I can't find him on any social media's. And if anyone knows about this kind of situation any other advice is appreciated. [link] [comments] |
My father is critical in ICU, have to make a deicison. He has no will. Posted: 10 May 2021 11:15 AM PDT NEW JERSEY His only family is my mother (wife), me and brother. Tommorw we are having a family meeting, but it is not looking good as the brain isnt showing function. He has us as beneficiaries at his job, however with no will, what do we do about his accounts? Do we need to get a lawyer? What kind of laywer? Are we going to have to fight in court now with no will? I am not familar with this, the situation is already hard. Any advice and who we can contact is greatly appreciated. LATER EDIT= Mom not on his personal checking/savings account. He has me and my brother for his 401k. Not sure about pension and other job related accounts. Parents just bought a new house, both of their names are on the house deed. By everyones comments, it seems like my brother and I will get 401K and my mother will get everything else by state succession laws? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 10 May 2021 01:20 PM PDT (North Dakota) My girlfriend's dog is a rescue dog who was abused as a puppy. She is the sweetest dog ever to anyone she has gotten used to, but any new people she meets she is incredibly defensive to. If we are out on walks and people try to pet her without asking she will nip/bite if she feels threatened. If I get a "do not pet" vest and someone tries to pet without permission and gets bit, am I still legally responsible for my dog biting someone? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 10 May 2021 10:57 AM PDT I leased out a room in his house (Gonzales, Ascension Parish) on a month to month basis. The lease specifies that there has to be an inspection at the beginning and at the end of this tenancy. He told me that as long as I gave him 2 week's notice of moving out I would be fine (I notified him by text). I paid a $650 security deposit, and performed the move-in inspection with him. I asked him if he could do the inspection today (5/10) with me at 10 am and he said that he would be fine with it on Thursday (5/6). Today, he sends me a text asking me if I've moved out, I dont say yes or no I just say "I am omw to pick up the rest of stuff. I'll be there soon". When I get there, he tells me he is home but he is working on some bank documents, I send him multiple messages saying that I need to sign off the inspection document he says its fine and I don't have to sign anything. I stay there for 40 minutes but he stays in his room. He tells me he will inspect it when I leave and send me my security deposit back. I took a video of the room before leaving (I also took one when I moved in). My questions are, did I fuck up by moving out before 5/12 and does he have a basis to steal my deposit? What should I be doing now to protect myself if he refuses to fulfil his part of the bargain? When do I send in a written demand for deposit/lawyer up? I know its early and the deadline is 30 days from the end of the lease (and my lease ends in 2 days) but I just want to make sure I am prepared to deal with it. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 10 May 2021 12:45 PM PDT Hi, I live in Florida and I wanted to know if I'm able to get the police report, photographs, or anything from when my grandmother took her own life. My name and picture were mentioned in the note and my family refuses to tell me what was said. Is there a way to get the records from the police station or something? Please help me get some closure. It's been years. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 10 May 2021 07:15 AM PDT Not for me but a coworker. She received a positive covid test over the weekend and was told by management to quarantine (and thus will have to use her own time). Months ago they gave everyone computers to work from home which probably covers about 90% of what we do in the office. She was told she cannot work from home and will have to use her own time. Two questions: 1.Can they force someone to stay home and not pay them unless they use their own time? & 2.Does the fact we have the capability to work from home make any difference for #1? Posted: 10 May 2021 07:48 AM PDT tl;dr incorrect furniture was delivered to me, and I couldn't get them to come get it. I had to throw it out as I did not have space for it, and now they are charging me for it. I ordered a couch and a recliner from a big furniture retailer here in Texas. The order came in 3 deliveries. The first delivery they provided my couch. The second delivery was incorrect, they had an additional piece to the couch (sectional) that I already had. I tried to refuse delivery, but the delivery person said if I didn't take it it would be months before I could get the recliner I was still waiting on. I took the chair, but I did not sign anything. The third delivery came and they gave me my recliner, but they refused to take the additional sectional piece, which was huge, and with both pieces it was blocking my hallways as I live in a small apartment. I called/emailed/gave them ample time to come pick up the extra piece, (jan 05), I got no response. I warned them I was throwing it out if I didn't get a response. I threw the piece out 2 weeks later (Jan 19). They finally replied (Jan 21st) and said they were working to have the piece picked up. I let them know I had already thrown it out as I did not have space for it. I just recently realized they are charging me for the additional piece. It looks like under Texas law I am not obligated to pay for unsolicited delivery of goods. Is this considered unsolicited? Am I legally obligated to pay for this? Dealing with this company has been an absolute headache. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 10 May 2021 01:06 PM PDT My girlfriend and I live in a small apartment complex with about ten other neighbors. Saturday at noon my girlfriend and I discovered that our toilet was leaking from the base. We went outside to talk to our neighbors and they all said that sewage was backing up into their bathtubs. Our apartment was the only one that was leaking from the base and after a few minutes the whole bathroom was like a swimming pool. We tried calling the emergency number for the property management company since Saturday, we must have left at least 20 calls with no response. At this point, sewage and nasty water is seeping into the carpet in the hallway and going through both bathroom walls into both the kitchen and also the room next to the bathroom. Still no response from management company. Me and my girlfriend spend all day Saturday and Sunday cleaning up nasty mess but we can't do anything about sewage in our carpet. Sunday at noon we see a drainage service pull up for about 20 minutes and then leave. They never spoke to anybody at the apartment complex and still no contact from the property management company. The toilets are fixed now but we haven't been contacted by the property management company about our carpets. This is obviously disgusting and seems like it would be illegal. What are my options? I'm a broke college student. [link] [comments] |
