I made the same amount of money in 2021 (to date) as I did in all of 2020 from my startup Posted: 06 Apr 2021 09:18 AM PDT I made the same amount of money in 2021 (to date) as I did in all of 2020 from my startup Obsidian Authenticator. I've first developed the app back in 2017 as a side project and published it for free on iOS and with a one-time fee of $2 for macOS. Over the years, receiving a lot of positive feedback, I started thinking about introducing a subscription (Obsidian Fusion for $1/month) to enable some new features I was developing for the app (e.g. Backups, Themes, etc). The choice was not for greed or anything like that, but the time I was spending on the development was increasing considerably and I could not afford to do it with the current revenue rate. I was extremely nervous because such a change would have let some of my users down, but at the same time I believed I had no other choice if I wanted to continue adding features at this pace. So at the end of January, I released a major update with the new Fusion subscription, and today, after 2 months, I've made the same money I earned in all of 2020. It's not much, I have to admit it, but I did not believe this would have been possible and that so many users converted to the new subscription model. I've also received some negative feedback, as expected, from people who did not like the move, but I was prepared and I'm truly sorry they felt this way. Anyway, I believe this was the right move for me and for the future of the app, which will allow me to grow Obsidian even more and possibly help more people secure their accounts with 2 Factor Authentication. "Don't start another coffee company." Posted: 05 Apr 2021 05:34 PM PDT Rant. As many of you know, I'm in the process of starting my coffee company here in freaking northern Canada. Things are moving along nicely. Got $500 a pre-sale already :D! Which is generating more than my music on Spotify in 2020. Just got this text. A friend of a "local"-ish competitor wrote to me on Instagram: "Don't start another coffee company. The market is saturated. Margins are lean. Start rather a brewery." Like. WTF. I travelled the Americas with my freaking Jeep to find the best coffees. So, yeah, I am going to start my own fucking coffee company. And then a brewery. Why do people write books, if there are already so many books? Out of passion, mostly. Sometimes starting a business it's just about executing your motherfucking dreams, and not dying with the "what if" in mind, cause at least you fucking tried. Yeah, my margins are low. But who the fuck cares. It's a start of something. A step in the right direction. "Don't start another coffee company." "Don't start another coffee company." "Don't start another coffee company." lol Oh yeah, and if I do, THEN WHAT? End of rant. JP // Lesson: Starting your own business sometimes is about PROVING to yourself something. I highly recommend starting your own thing. Make people uncomfortable. Failure is the best teacher. Fail fast, fail often. (Update: I mean by that, EXECUTING a great idea is MUCH better than waiting all of your life to execute THE BEST idea. Just fucking start something, and get going.) [link] [comments] |
Paypal - how do I mark an invoice to my customer "paid in full" ? Posted: 06 Apr 2021 07:47 AM PDT My customer is asking for an invoice for some goods he bought from me. I go to Pay and Get Paid > Create Invoice, but there is no option to mark it as paid. I saw a few websites that say " Go to the "Actions" column and click "Mark as paid" but there's no Action column I can see. How do you do it? [link] [comments] |
Looking for advice on how to handle international shipping. Posted: 06 Apr 2021 05:48 AM PDT I'm selling a small USB device and currently charging a blanket $5 for shipping anywhere in the U.S., as that's what a priority package basically ships for through the USPS (it ranges from something like $4.50-5.50 and I just eat the difference per package). Anyone have any suggestions for how I could implement something similar for international shipping?(preferably a fast and easy flat rate that both me and my customer's would be happy with) [link] [comments] |
Mötley Crüe Gaming the Music Industry Posted: 06 Apr 2021 08:16 AM PDT Investigative reporter Neil Strauss digs up dirt in his bestseller following Mötley Crüe, recently adapted into a trending film on Netflix. Each chapter takes place from a different band members point of view detailing the highest imaginable highs and current financial lows. Decadence has its price as these goons got their moneys worth trashing hotels with Ozzy Osborne and ravaging the countryside for questionably young girls. More than our edition last year about gaming the music industry, this book is a wild ride of survival exploring each mans experience with the machine. We'll go from the Whiskey a Go Go rapid rise to notoriety, accelerate through sports car crashes to the infamous speedball overdose all in the name of Rock and Roll. Call up Dr Feelgood, its time to Kickstart Your Heart and Take You to the Top. Posted: 06 Apr 2021 07:52 AM PDT At some point in your entrepreneur journey, you have or you will have to cold outreach potential customers, partners, investors, etc. However, not many founders get it right. Part of the reason is that when doing cold outreach to generate new potential customers founders end up focusing on either a very low volume that needs scale, or too much volume with almost no personalization (we get these in our inbox every day...). So, What's the secret? Successful cold outreach lies in 3 main factors:
Don't worry. I'll show you how it works - all secrets uncovered to get replies like these. The Formula (Example below):

Feeling weird about sacrificing my corporate career for my entrepreneurial dream Posted: 06 Apr 2021 05:43 AM PDT I've been working on my side hustle for a year now while working at my full-time corporate job. The side hustle is going much slower than I expected. I thought I would be quitting my 9-5 by now, but I'm not even close. My corporate job is mediocre. I started this job 2 years ago as entry level and I'm still at the same level. No pay raise. No promotion. Pay is slightly lower than industry average. With my qualifications and experience, I knew that I could qualify for a higher level job with better pay. But I stayed because (1) i wanted to focus on my business (2) it offers a decent work-life balance and allows me to focus on the biz and (3) it's not stressful because after 2 years I'm 100% familiar with everything that I do. Last year, I tried applying for jobs and had interviews, but I realized that it's taking so much of my time that I couldn't even focus on my business. All those resume writing/cover letter writing/researching companies/interviews preparing took wayyy too much time. Interviewers downplaying my experience didn't help either. This whole process reminded me why I wanted to be an entrepreneur in the first place. But here I am with a not-so-successful business and mediocre corporate career. I'm just failing on both ends and I started to question it. All of my friends had gone up the corporate ladder, but I really hold on to the hope that entrepreneurship is 100% worth it. Any advice? I feel like I don't know where to go from here. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Phone line options for a specific state? Posted: 06 Apr 2021 11:29 AM PDT I need a phone line for a specific state that I am not in, and the ability to have a custom voice mail message. Ideally I do not want to spend more than $5 a month. Better still would be less. I 'm having trouble finding the information and it is all overwhelming. I'm not sure if I could use a prepaid phone and not have to pay anything month to month, or if I would have to add money every month? Does someone leaving a voice mail mean a charge on the minutes? Or is there a good virtual service? Most of them are quite expensive, and I'm not sure if they fit my needs. [link] [comments] |

How a simple "How it works" video changed my business Posted: 06 Apr 2021 02:26 AM PDT This is a follow up to my first every post in this subreddit some weeks ago: Part 1. So in the previous post, many of the amazing people in this subreddit suggested me to put a short video that explains how the product works so that visitors could quickly grasp what the product is about. So I decided to take that advice and put it into action straight away. I outsourced this to a person in Fiverr (it cost around £30) and made the code changes to put in the landing page. In all honesty, I wasn't really satisfied on how the video was edited but I thought it was good enough to get started with. To me surprise, since releasing the video, I noticed that the subscription rate on my website has increased by a massive percentage. So big big thank you to everyone who pushed me to make this change, it really made a difference to my business. In the background, I am learning video editing to make the video myself and hopefully do a bit more justice to my product, but for now this is doing its job. The lesson here is that just the fact that there is a video is making a huge difference in the subscription rate. I suspect there is a jump in the level of trust that viewers get when having a quick demo presented as soon as they open the site. I hope this helps some of the folks who are working on designing their landing page :) For those who are interested, my site is https://www.parcelfriends.com Once again, thanks everyone for your advice and feedback in my first post! Need help with my jewelry wholesale business model before I begin. Posted: 06 Apr 2021 09:47 AM PDT Hey! I would like to buy jewelry from manufacturers in China and sell them to local businesses in bulk. I live in an area where there are LOADS of physical jewelry businesses and all are selling the same stock and for high prices. I believe that they are purchasing from many middlemen which results in their prices being higher than if they would buy from only one middleman that purchases directly from the factory (me). What I am struggling with is this, say I enter a jewelry store, ask to speak with the owner and show the owner my jewelry catalog (I have a catalog that I had professionally designed that showcases all of the jewelry I can supply them with). After showing the catalog, if the business owner is interested in purchasing what do I do now (as the jewelry has to be purchased and delivered from China, it will take between one to two weeks to arrive)? I can't take the business owners' word, as if he will not be interested in the jewelry once they arrived, I won't be able to return them. I don't believe they will provide me with any upfront cash as well without hearing about my business prior. Can anyone give me advice on this business model and how I should execute the payments? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Define Your Brand. Be a winner! Posted: 06 Apr 2021 05:11 AM PDT Brand Positioning is "the act of designing the company's offering and image to occupy a distinctive place in the mind of the target consumers". On a wider level, defining your brand is basically what you want your consumers to think when thinking of your business. For example, the previous slogan of Walmart was "Always low prices. Always". They have now changed it to "Save Money. Live Better." Now, whenever a consumer thinks of Walmart, they think of economic shopping. Brand positioning is an important step when growing your business into a brand. Let's say that you offer N number of products/services. Which one of these products/services do you want your consumers/clients to know your business for? This will not only help you generate new leads for that particular category but eventually, will help you become a brand! Having said that, it's always a good idea to stick to your niche when positioning your brand. Targeting multiple niches at the same time can leave your users confused about your core offerings. How do I value a successful sole proprietorship for sale? Posted: 06 Apr 2021 07:56 AM PDT I remember reading that there should be a few years worth of solid numbers to make investors perk up a bit so I'm a bit early to hand the keys over, but I'm still curious.
So if I have a couple years averaging $85k gross value for roundsies how do I value my business? This would be a great gig for someone in construction to hold a contract like this. They get a grocery list of work awarded, generally April, and told to have it done by Hallowe'en. So any quiet weeks, or if there's a setback whoever holds this could bomb around, slam some work out and call it quits whenever other work picked up, right? The amount of tools and materials is low, profit is high but does involve travel (so there's food, hotel and planning involved), I have the scoop on how to keep my business in contracts with the government and I'm competitively priced against other businesses. How do I fairly value this? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Apr 2021 07:46 AM PDT Hi everyone, I'm intrigued and wanting to start my own Golf apparel company. I'd like to do full shirt designs on dri-fit polos but having a really hard time finding any manufacturer that can print on the full shirt (instead of just a logo or embroideries). Does anyone know any dri-fit polo manufacturers that can support full shirt design? To give you an idea, Bad Birdie has their designs printed on the whole shirt. That is what I'm looking for. Any help and tips are greatly appreciated :) [link] [comments] |
Pros and Cons of using an LLC for Investing Posted: 06 Apr 2021 06:55 AM PDT So I recently set up an LLC for a partnership in a business venture. That had me thinking of setting up a separate LLC for myself to do specific stock and asset investing. The LLC would have completely separate assets from me, with little (if any) payout per year to myself on accrued interest. I would essentially just place money into its accounts and let the business grow the assets under its own name. What are the pros and cons of doing most of your investing through an LLC as opposed to keeping everything in your own name? Edit: Lots of good thoughts guys, thanks for taking the time to answer. I was really just looking for any negative thoughts about the structure to get a sense of what people thought about a single person LLC. Someone suggested I should put down my plan as a whole, and I do think that'd help as I'm starting to formulate more of one. Pls read, I accept all poking and criticisms of the plan! The whole idea would be to accumulate wealth into the LLC and pretty much never take anything out of it. In my state there are no state income tax filings, so I'm really only worried about federal taxation. I have read that an LLC can be filed as a C-Corp federally, and that a C-Corp can have 0 employees, therefore not needing to be double taxed. My plan would be to deposit cash into the company and then purchase liquid investments like stocks and crypto. Later I would flip those gains into real estate. 20 years down the line I can then sell the business as a whole for the entire real estate portfolio and hopefully have paid as little tax as possible year over year. Posted: 06 Apr 2021 04:36 AM PDT Money = Revenue? I come from a typical business background, where no one cares about REVENUE. Your revenue may be Rs 3,00,000 a month. But if your expenses are Rs 250,000 every month, your hard-earned money will be Rs 50,000. Business doesn't run based on how much you earn. It runs based on how much you can save, re-invest, and keep aside for the emergency purpose. If you blindly focus on revenue and forget profit, you'll soon run out of cash. So, the next time when someone asks you about your business growth, don't calculate revenue. Calculate the wealth that your business is creating. [link] [comments] |

What is your desired end goal? Posted: 06 Apr 2021 02:45 AM PDT A bit of a broad question, but I wonder what peoples' motivations and end goals are. Obviously if it's personal to you then that's fine, but I'd love to hear what you all think. For context; I'm a software dev with over 10 years experience and just starting out with a few other co-founders to build what we believe could be massively market disrupting product. I'm really excited to sculpt the future to the beat of my own drum and not somebody else's. My end goal? To make enough to secure my family's future, buy my local rugby club and donate the majority to fund cures for Dementia and Cancer. [link] [comments] |

The owner of New York City's top Food Truck shares his lessons learned from surviving the pandemic. Posted: 05 Apr 2021 02:42 PM PDT We interviewed one of New York City's top food trucks, Uncle Gussy's, serving Greek cuisine at an affordable rate. Core elements of the interview involved learning how Nicko, the owner, went from serving 800 people a day to an anemic pandemic rate of 100-200. He talks about balancing optimism with a healthy balance of pessimism, and how serving amazing souvlaki and feta fries transcends beyond the food and is really about creating genuine relationships with his customers. Even if you're not starting a food truck, I recommend checking out his perspective. [link] [comments] |

Reaching out to Big Brands to become their supplier Posted: 06 Apr 2021 04:31 AM PDT Hello, So a bit about me, run an umbrella business based in UAE, been operating for 25 years. We produce all varieties of umbrella and they are super high quality. I want to become the supplier for some of these bigger fashion brands but I am not sure on how to go about it, tried cold emails etc did not work. Any ideas? Also I have visited the factories where these fashion brands get their umbrellas made and its something that I could easily do in terms of consistent quality and volume. My main issue is just being able to get my foot in the door. [link] [comments] |
