Today I'm launching a new product as an Solo-Entrepreneur -- Wish me luck!

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 06:31 AM PDT

Yep, you heard it right! I'm a solo-entrepreneur who create new/enhanced products just because I can lol. I created this free pomodoro technique to scratch my own itch.. one can say.

Most pomodoro timers out there only log your time spent on a task if you FINISH the pomodoro round, I find that kind've annoying. I needed something that marries traditional time-tracking techniques with interval based focus sessions (aka: pomodoro technique)

Timerfy - a free pomodoro timer for those who are into productivity. Comes with built-in charts and customizable settings for all your productivity needs. Enjoy!

Hi I'm Sol, co-founder of Examine. AMA.

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 08:14 AM PDT

I've been building businesses online since 1999. The big three notable for me were originally online gaming virtual currencies (eg EverQuest, DaoC, WoW, etc), then local search (right around when Yelp was created), and then Examine.com (which I founded as I lost weight and realized how much supplement companies were lying).

Pretty much everything I built was for myself. I wasn't specifically looking for a problem - just curiosity.

Examine analyzes and summarizes the latest scientific research to help you be healthier — no ads, no consulting, no supplement sales. If you in the health/nutrition space, you have likely come across us. We actually spawned the website out of /r/fitness over a decade ago (when the sub was only a few tens of thousands of people!)

We're a 100% remote team of ~25 people. My various companies have generated millions (I hate it when people say made, because it sounds like that's what they netted) from advertising (ugh), information guides, and now subscriptions.

I talk about entrepreneurship over on Facebook and on SJO.com, but I specifically have no desire to monetize SJO - to me it's more of a fulfilling endeavor (which is on pause as I focus on Examine).

Entrepreneurship has always been about freedom to do things that I can - eg I've also done fun stuff like merge my love of cookies and meeting interesting humans to get people to send me cookies in the mail and raise hundreds of thousands for local non-profits, helping Arnold Schwarzenegger with his online stuff, and more.

I've also been a redditor for far too long time (15 years in ~10 weeks).

I did an AMA here a 4 years ago, and then after doing one in /r/growthhacking a few weeks ago, someone suggested I do one here again. You can also find out a bit more about me on my about page or Wikipedia.

And so here we are — AMA :)

when starting a new business, the question is not "what makes your brand unique or stand out" but rather "how can your brand improve on the competition" and "what different niche is your brand targeting"

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 07:54 PM PDT

brand advisor: "what makes your pet supply company unique or stand out? there are hundreds or even thousands of them out there"

me: "nothing about my brand is unique or stand out"

"have you done any market research or competitor analysis?"

"i have. market research and competitor analysis shows there is no brand like mine. let me ask you this: you have branded over 100 companies. name one company that is similar to what i'm doing"

"i have no previous clients quite like yours"

"right. so out of the hundreds you have branded, no one is like mine. here are 3 qualities about my brand. let me ask you then, on this planet, how many brands are like mine?"

"none. i haven't seen a brand quite like yours."

    "exactly"

its when i started realizing that when anyone asks you "what makes your brand unique or stand out", the question is offensive to the recipient because it is likely nothing about their brand is unique or stand out. the recipient may just feel bad about their brand

it is not the proper question to ask because out of the hundreds or even thousands of companies out there in your field, are you expected to have come up with some new concept or invention? likely not, so what is the point of the question?

you can't be expected to be unique or stand out in a field this crowded. if you do happen to stand out or be unique, does that mean all the others lacked creativity? that all the hundreds or thousands of companies couldn't think of the concept you thought of?

the proper and more realistic question to ask is "how can your brand improve on the competition?" and "what different niche is your brand targeting?"

my brand is nothing new. no new concept, no new invention. but it targets an untapped niche. and we improve on the competition

and that is what is needed to start entrepreneurship

"how can your brand improve on the competition?"

every competitor has sometime to improve. thats why theres yearly iterations. if you can get 1-2 iterations ahead, you have already beaten the competition. or improve on customer service. you can improve on a business aspect the competitor is lacking

"what different niche is your brand targeting?"

not everyone thinks 100% alike. in an extreme example, if 99% think in one way, theres 1% thinking another way. target that 1%

How do entrepreneurs even find desire, ideas, motivation, confidence and sanity to start a business, hire people and have so much patience to start profiting?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 07:44 AM PDT

I am 24 years old. This question bugs me and I get sad when I think of that!

When people get the idea and from where?

They are sitting at home, working for a bank/company or on a date and idea pops up in their head and they make a correct analysis. Then they start a business.

    • How they have so much motivation, confidence and desire even before they are successful and rich?*

I have seen it many times. How some people are confident, even if they are not hot shots or that good.

Steve jobs movie showed, he was in control of everything. He was a visionary and knew everything.

Bill gates had connections, high IQ and so much confidence. Started at 20, he was a born Millionaire and became billionaire after few years.

    Are they born like that?

How they update themselves on accounting, tax laws, hiring people and lots of other chores

From where such patience comes from?

    What drives them?

Even if they are failing, they move on

Many people I talked too, were not making profit for 5 to 6 years and some lived on wife's salary and what not.

How they can be so much patient? Still amibitious?

How do I turn my skills in copywriting into a viable business?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 02:34 AM PDT

Have been working on fiverr and PayPal for sometime now and have been doing well. I'm a young copywriter with fairly low prices and have been working with mainly YouTube sports pages to create hype video scripts and with crypto businesses to create catchy slogans and smart copy. How do I go about getting more customers if they won't recommend me to other businesses? Thank you all so much for your help.

    How to start?

I am thinking of starting a soccer themed bakery, with treats such as macarons decorated in the colors of PSG, Messi themed alfajores, etc. I don't know where to start, so any advice would be helpful

I wanted to open my business outside of local to include free shipping nationwide. I created a survey, got 3 responses. By the answers, i'm extremely disappointed. How important is a 3 person sample size? 2 person run business.

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 09:30 AM PDT

First, I'm in a super niche business.

I'm a personal organizer, and guide others in organizing their loved-one's belongings after they pass. It's actually a HUGE demand, but there are a lot of people who want to do it alone, and I completely get that.

I decided, since I also do archiving, and my partner has 10 years experience as a web/app/digital product UX designer, I would offer digitization of photographs to flash drives and give instructions on backing up the data.

Now, most (all 6) of my clients, since i've started 2 months ago, have been local. They've LOVED the service I gave and the care taken while handling their precious family photographs and documents.

I thought, hey, if I followed the National Archive's Guidelines on shipping fragile items, maybe I can ship people a kit of the things they'd need to ship me their photos across the country! And i'd have a TON more business!

Well, I created a google survey, posted it to the Sample Size reddit, got 3 responses. All 3 say they would NOT ship their photos through any service.

I feel so stupid for even thinking it would be a good idea. Now I just feel down about all of it.

Is this a stupid idea? Am I completely out of my element? Am I not taking something big into consideration? This whole thing is surprisingly emotionally heavy for me.

Is there any such thing as an easy business to run if you're interested in running a business but don't know if it's the right move?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 08:48 AM PDT

I've always thought about running a business as a future career but don't know how I would handle it so I guess what I'm asking is there certain businesses that you could try to run as an entrepreneur to get to learn what it's like and see if being a business owner is the right move?

    Making an online platform

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 05:58 AM PDT

Basically I need a dev to make an online platform. B2B sort of mixture between requirements of Airbnb and fiverr. I've got no background in developing, I have a cofounder who's a tech/data guy but doesn't know about developing platforms. Would a web design agency be best or hiring someone off upwork / fiverr - for the latter two what garuntee do you have the final product is what you asked for (viable). Budget is around £12,000/$15,000 for development.

Got a plan, some pricing, 6 clients finished, and I'm headed in the right direction. But I'm stuck at figuring out advertising and marketing my small hustle/business. How do I reach the 40+ demographic?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 10:23 AM PDT

I am a professional organizer/archivist with 10 years experience in artifact preservation from the National Park Service.

My side hustle is to help folks organize the bins and boxes of misc. items that are left after a loved-one's passing. Then to take the photographs that are inevitably found, digitize them with an archival scanner, and send them a USB with the photos in original .tif format and compressed .jpg for sharing.

I also offer a custom website that they can use to share their photographs with family.

I've had 6 clients so far, all of whom have been over the moon with the service. I've helped people who are in tears with overwhelming emotion, leave with smiles and thank-you's. It is unbelievably rewarding.

I'm wondering, is sooner rather than later necessary to create a website? How the hell do I get my business name/description/email out there to draw in more clients? How do I reach the 40+ year old demographic? What ELSE should I be taking into consideration?

I have a true passion for this, and I'm working as hard and fast as I possibly can to ensure this thing gets up off the ground from a side hustle to a full time business. I want to be realistic but creative. Unfortunately, I'm not the creative type. I do the analytical/categorical shit really really well, but I'm an okay communicator at best. So I need a little bit of a push in the right direction with some advice that can get me thinking clearly about expanding this little thing into a glorious machine.

Easiest service to use for one time or recurring payments?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 01:52 PM PDT

Hey all! I offer some simple marketing services and was wondering what the best service I could use to collect payments is? I know this is probably a common question and there are tons of resources out there, but I want to look for the most ideal service for my situation.

I don't have an online presence (and don't plan to just because my time is better spent elsewhere as of right now). I want to have a site where I can refer clients to in order to input their credit card info and it will bill them (either one time or automatically depending on the service).

    Any recommendation would be great!

    Struggling Hard

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 01:31 PM PDT

I'm 21 and I have a 2 year old son. My baby mother and I are not together and we have 50/50 custody. So lately I've been struggling so hard, I have no reliable baby sitter and I work 10 hour night shifts 4-6 days a week making $16.15/hr while going to school for nursing. When I come home my son wakes up about 3 hours after I get home from work so I usually only get like 3-4 hours a sleep everyday I have him. It's extremely stressful and I feel like I have no one. I'm thinking about just giving up my custody to his mom but I doubt she would be ok with it because she loves to go clubbing and partying and she wouldn't be able to do that if she had full custody, also she has it way easier than me, her mom is her full time babysitter when she works. I'm not looking for anyone to feel bad for me but I'm looking for advice. My bills are about $1,200 a month and I make about $560 a week with no overtime but I usually try to take overtime and that adds an extra $200-350 per check. I'm so stressed that even when I have to chance to sleep I can't fall asleep. When I do take overtime I feel like I'm spending no time with my son so it always feels like a lose lose for me. My only debt is my $10,000 car note which I'm trying to pay off in 6-8 months.

    Local B2B help needed

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 08:01 AM PDT

    Hey everyone!

So a major issue that I see over and over on local statistics , census and surveys is the fact that small/medium companies that are already producing something and have been for years lack the use of technology means to help them be more productive. A lot of the surveyed companies blame the fact that digital transformations and appliances are often expensive and they don't have the required knowledge to evolve in that regard.

So to this end I started to question a lot of local establishments, mainly those that showed somewhat of an interest in a digital evolution specially if that meant more sales, expansion and acquiring more costumers. To this extent I found that a lot of them had poor and outdated invoicing software, the same would happen with their websites and how they handled data internally or how it was being analyzed (it wasn't in a lot of cases).

Now my issue is, when looking for an idea for a B2B SaaS for instance that could come up from this, should I straight up ask if these companies would be interested in paying for a software that would help them with their specific needs? Because I know there are some pretty good options out there that can be found with a simple google search.
Am I focusing too much on local stores/businesses and should go further into the search scope? Or could this actually work as a long term relationship?

Hey guys I know self-promoting isn't allowed in this thread, but I am not too sure if this is self-promoting or not, but I just created a website that sells an automotive garbage bin and would love your feedback and what I need to improve. The website is DashJunk.com. Thanks to the people that help me find a name for my website on this thread! Also my logo is being created right now on Fiverr.

Anyone have experience creating a dedicated subreddit for their own SaaS product?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 10:14 AM PDT

Feels logical. I built the SaaS, One man team.. So I'll be providing support for the few years, via email most commonly.

I'm an active Reddit user, specially in other web development communities. I can certainly answer my own SaaS's support question on the sub, provide guides etc..

Any experience you'd like to share?

Looking for software to schedule ad bookings internally and per month

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 02:49 AM PDT

    Hi,

I'm looking for free software which helps me with scheduling and showing what advertisement types are booked each month. I know I can do this by using Excel or Google Spreadsheets, but I'm looking for a prettier and a more 'stand alone' type of solution.

I run a website which offers all kinds of advertisement banners: rectangle, leaderboard, et cetera. Some are booked for months to company X, others change every month or so, and some are not booked for several months.

I need a calendar, which only shows the months of the year, where I can fill a month per banner. For example:

BANNER: LEADERBOARD | RECTANGLE | BILLBOARD
JANUARY: APPLE | [empty] | FACEBOOK
FEBRUARY: APPLE | TESLA | [empty]
    Et cetera.

Excuse me if it's still unclear, English isn't my native language. And I haven't found any solutions like this, so it's hard to give proper examples...

What are some nice secondary financing option to offer for people with bad/no credit?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 06:57 AM PDT

I'm helping run a roofing business and we offer great financing options for homeowners that we can get approved. The big issue is there are a lot of people that badly need work done but have terrible or no credit and we can find financial institutions that are willing to approve them.

My question is what are some options we can offer to these homeowners to help them. Average ticket is 10-20k

I really need to find a big list of businesses so I can go down the list and find something that fits me. And I don't mean innovative business ideas, I mean businesses that are always somewhat needed. From a computer repair shop, to a hair salon to an art gallery.

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 05:48 AM PDT

Of course, every business needs an edge, a small innovation that makes you better than the competition. But I'll figure that out once I settle on something. First I really, really need a big list of such businesses that I can peruse and finally find something that fits.

How can I find such a list?

Have been approached about buying 2 sub shops. Some questions.

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 05:36 AM PDT

So I worked for the current owner for years in/after high school. He has asked me if I would like to purchase the business from him. The big problem, is he keeps absolutely terrible/non existent books.

The stores have been in business in the same locations for 21 years. I believe he is leaving alot of the table in a few ways; only open until 5:30, not open Sundays, no curbside pickup, no mobile/online ordering etc.

What is a reasonable way I can have him gather the financial information needed to see if the business is profitable/would be profitable if I were to buy it and have to service the loan, make a profit etc.
