What are my options if my car accident isn’t fully covered by insurance?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 06:13 PM PST

For context, I'm in Texas and was deemed at fault in an accident last year and had the unfortunate luck of being hit by a BMW that then pushed me onto a Lexus. Both cars looked brand new, and because the BMW had the right of way, I was deemed at fault.

I am now receiving a notification from my insurance that the damages will most likely exceed my property damage coverage. I'm terrified at what this will cost. For reference, my coverage was $25k, but the insurance already paid off my car as a total loss (about $7.5k). Since both cars looked new but were considered total losses, I estimate I'm looking at $50k-100k in difference.

Do I have any options to mitigate these damages? I moved back in with my parents last year after a rough separation and I was still on my ex's insurance at the time, so this just feels like the continuation of a string of shitty life events. I have a small emergency fund that I was hoping to use for a new home, but it barely puts a dent on what I expect this accident to cost me.

Do insurances offer payment plans? Can I declare bankruptcy? Am I misunderstanding this situation? I have so many questions and any help is appreciated 😔

Sons ex got motorcycle back, reported it stolen, said in advance she was going to just report it stolen

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 09:08 PM PST

My sons ex convinced him to give her a street bike back, was joint loan, then texted she was going to report it stolen, got the insurance money about $4,600, then texts him it was shy $600 for loan. Bike really wasn't on property later in week, so she was pretty cunning.

However, she said right in the text messages to him, that was what she was going to do, then got the money. It's been about 4 years.

Can text msgs be evidence enough where the lady can get into trouble? I mean to be fair, she could have said those things, and it then did get stolen, but but but, she said she was going to do it.

Will progressive insurance look into it, or just leave it alone?

    Washington state.

19 year old female with 2 accidents. Need help finding insurance

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 02:25 AM PST

After waiting most of 2020 for the DMV in CT to open up, I got my license in September of 2020. I financed a car and in October I was following too closely at a light and tapped someone's bumper. No damage to their car besides a scratch (my car had a crack in the front grill) but they immediately called the police and that was about an $1k payout. In November , I had a close call with another driver driving recklessly and in December I was driving in a rain storm and I lost control of my car nearly flipped over into a ditch. My car was totaled. PTSD aside, I'm ready to buy a new car because I need one. I've been quoting insurance and most of the rates are $700+ the highest being $1300. Before the accidents I was on my parents insurance paying about $250 a month. I cannot afford anything over $400 even if I choose not to finance a car again. Please help. What can I do to find lower rates. I'm looking to try getting my own policy because my parents aren't exactly keen on having me on theirs. Thanks!

    Visa Platinum Travel Insurance

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 02:09 AM PST

Hope someone here has experience or knowledge of Visa Platinum Travel Insurance. Back in 2015 I travelled to Florida from Europe, and got in a motocross accident which lead to me breaking my back. I was 17 at the time and my plane ticket was booked with a Visa platinum card which includes travel insurance. They covered my hospital bills, approx 20.000 USD, and upgraded all my flights to first class so I could return home.

Now it is obvious that my injury will continue to affect me for the rest of my life. Do you think Visa would pay out compensation to me for the accident?

I have never made an insurance claim before.

At fault for minor fender bender in parking lot

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 12:03 PM PST

I already know I'm 100% liable since the accident involved is me reversing in a parking lot and hitting a parked, stationary vehicle. The accident occurred in Florida, and we exchanged insurance information (we both have the same insurer - Progressive), and the other party gave the impression that he was going to be filing a claim against me since he drives a 2018 Silver Camaro (so, yeah, completely understandable). I proceeded to file a claim on my end that same evening, even though I don't need any repairs to my vehicle at all since it just took off some paint and honestly, it's so incredibly minor that it's not worth the hassle to get a car detail done.

The damage itself, from first impression, is incredibly minor (just a maybe 2.5-3" scratch with a small paint transfer from my vehicle on the left side of the license plate - didn't hit the license plate, the scratch is right next to it), but I've heard cases of even 2 mph collisions that looks like minor cosmetic damage can actually be serious damages underneath so I guess I just have to see where this goes. I've attached an image of the damage, but people with sports vehicle are very particular with their car so I'm expecting to get hit a high liability cost, which will affect Progressive's small accident forgiveness, which makes me a little anxious.

I honestly have no clue if anything I did was the correct approach since this my first time handling accidents. At this rate, do I just wait things out for my insurance to contact me? What if the other party never filed a claim, and I essentially just dug myself a hole by claiming with my insurance first? Any advice or guide will help.

First Car Accident. Young and overwhelmed.

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 01:20 AM PST

Hi everyone! I will try to keep this as brief as I can as I know I can ramble on. I included a little about the accident in case that helps. Please forgive me if I don't understand something right, I've been trying to learn everything I can these last few days.

I'm a male, 20 years old, a full-time college student. This was the first accident I have ever been involved in, I have a flawless driving record... I took a lot of pride in that. This accident was 100% not my fault. The other gentleman turned left right in front of me as I was going 40-45mph. I did not have any warning as I was just cruising in the slow lane and apparently, people in the fast and middle lane stopped to let the guy make his turn which set him and me up to collide.

I hope I explained it well...I'm still foggy, this happened Friday.

After it happened, I sat in shock for a couple of minutes as I wasn't sure if I was hurt and I was trying to process it. I eventually(slowly) got out of the car as I smelt smoke and I saw a bunch of people running up to me so I thought my car was on fire...it wasn't. Meanwhile, the other guy is rolling around in the gravel screaming in pain. I think his back was messed up. I had a cut and swollen wrist and leg. I couldn't hear out of my left ear very well(I still can't and I'm very very scared)...and I couldn't put simple thoughts together quickly. The paramedics somewhat brushed me off as the other guy was in much worse shape. They recommended urgent care. I did that. Urgent care found that my neck was strained and also ordered a spine x-ray. He did not suspect a concussion. I have excellent health insurance, not sure if that means anything. I plan on going to my primary care doctor soon.

As for car insurance, I am somewhat clueless. I should start by saying that I live with my mom who is the primary person on the policy, she is a foreigner and quite frankly, screws stuff up all the time...here's why: I had personally picked all the coverage for our vehicles and made sure it was all good, but I guess 5 days before the accident she called into our insurance company to make an adjustment to a vehicle, and instead of doing that, she removed uninsured and underinsured....needless to say, I love my mom but what a stupid mistake. While I don't have all the details yet, the other guy has state farm... so I might luck out, but I am not sure if I understand that correctly. We also don't have rental reimbursement.

As for the car, my mom owns it(well the bank does), she still owes 3700ish, the car is worth at least 6500 and I'm going very low I think. It's a 2014 chevy Cruze with 65k miles, it was in near excellent condition.

I called our insurance company on Saturday the 27th and filed a claim. I wasn't sure if that was the right move but it made sense to me. They had the car towed to my house, it's totaled. No doubt about it...every airbag went off and the frame is cracked. Our insurance company told me I could get a rental car but I would have to count on getting reimbursed from state farm... I've held back from doing that since I am afraid they won't. Am I in the clear to get one? State Farm hasn't disclosed his coverage nor have they accepted liability yet. They need to talk to him apparently. I should mention that he got a citation for failing to yield. Meanwhile, I'm waiting for someone to call me to check my car out I guess?

Now I know this is the insurance Reddit but my big question is, what do I do next? Do I get an attorney? Did I already mess up somehow? I don't really have anyone else to turn to for help right now so I greatly appreciate your help guys as I try to figure this out.

I've had back pain for a while now and pretty convinced I need a MRI to see what's wrong. I've had x rays done and nothing alarming was found with my spine. I've seen a chiropractor and a physical therapist but the pain is still there. I just changed employers and my opportunity to select a plan is coming up and need some advice. I uploaded my options above. I'm thinking of going with the Choice High plan since that should cover a good portion of my cost I think. For a deductible it says $0, is that a good thing or is it simply shifting the cost somewhere else? Is there anything on there that could be alarming?

The wording of when the benefits kicks in confuses me a bit. It says "Benefits are effective the first of the month following 30 days of employment". Does that mean if I select a plan next week it won't start until April?

Also what would be the best way to get an MRI asap? I don't want to start the whole process over by seeing my doctor and them recommending I just go through another round of physical therapy. Do I just walk into a hospital and ask to get an MRI?

    Not renewing policy

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 05:14 PM PST

My insurance company (home & auto) just sent me a letter stating that due to a recent inspection, they will no longer cover me because I own a rottweiler. This inspection comes after being insured with them for a little over a year.

I'm on 2 acres in the country and my entire property is fenced in with 2 farm gates.

I don't know if it's worth calling and trying to figure out why the sudden problem with my dog, after insuring me for so long.. or just calling around to find a different company.

    Any advice is appreciated 👍

Sup Kids, I'm looking to get a new policy with a new company. I wanna know the right way to get cover for auto and life insurance.

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 12:23 AM PST

Well I'm 21. My mother and father are in their midst 50s. And I still live with them. Recently we as a family have been looking for a policy that is affordable and yet realistic. I know the minimum I pay is 181 a month with a deposit of 400 just for liability and another insurance is charging me 226 with no deposit. I know the 181 is better to use for the long run.

So here's what I'm having trouble. What is my best option of phrasing words to get a low rate. Or best yet what is a key phrase for acquiring insurance. Because soon I'll talk to a insurance agent and I don't want to seem ridiculous. Oh and I'm located in California.

[Califronia] Why is my health insurance offering me $75 to take a blood work up? Can this negatively affect me?

A basic questions about the insurance claim process.

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 11:29 PM PST

The recent Freeze in Texas burst our pipes. After 2 weeks, we were able to fix our outdoor pipes ourselves (had to order some special parts). But when we turned our water back on today, I found out a pipe above my bathroom and closet had also burst. A patch of my ceiling is ripped and water flowed into the vent of the room next door-- I'm guessing there would be water damage there too.

My family really need water since it's been 2 weeks. Can I call a plumber to fix the pipes now, before I file an insurance claim and get it compensated later when I fix the ceiling? or should I file the claim first?

Will my insurance company be deal with plumber and other contractors through this process, or will we just pay the contractors and give the insurance company the "receipt" after?

My dad and I fixed the outdoor pipes ourselves, and we noticed the ceiling being burst when we turn the water back on, and we immediately turned it off. Is this something I should mention to the adjuster?

It's my first time dealing with this so your advice is appreciated.

[California] Car was totaled. Will I be hit with higher rates later on if I cancel my auto insurance but get added as a driver on my partner's policy?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 01:50 PM PST

I'm thinking of canceling my auto insurance because my car was recently totaled. Because my boyfriend and I both work from our (shared) home, I've decided not to replace my vehicle. I might get another car but not in the immediate future.

However, I'm worried about getting hit with higher rates if/when I do purchase a new car if I have a gap in coverage. Can I avoid a rate hike by getting listed as a driver on my partner's policy or will I need to get non-owner's insurance? Any insight would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Covered California, Medi-cal, and Taxes

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 04:08 PM PST

Hi everyone, I had a case in Covered California and was reporting income changes. For some reason, the system had 2 different cases for me and the representatives I've talked to said it didn't matter. Anyways, they will put my information in either or. I was on unemployment and didn't receive unemployment for about 2 months and reported that. They kicked me off and sent me to Medi-cal instead. I received the hefty unemployment benefits then and notified Medi-cal. They still kept me on and apparently I don't have a IRT (it was 1970 before). I started working. I kept sending paystubs because obviously I'm concerned on how taxes might go. They called me and told me to stop sending my paystubs (I'm making about 3000 now) and that it doesn't matter because my IRT doesn't have a cap.

Anyways, I went on Covered California to report some changes including a change of address and income fluctuations that I had sent to Medi-cal. I thought they might open my case back up but it didn't happen and so I stopped reporting when I realized my benefits were no longer active even if I did report changes. I STILL reported to Medi-cal and that's when they called telling me to stop, and wait for renewal instead.

Lastly, since as I said I had two cases in Covered California for no apparent reason, they used my other case for taxes- this is the one without the change of address and without income fluctuations. Now I'm super worried because it's tax time and both agencies didn't care about my income fluctuations and Covered California had me at 17k when I made 31k instead. I don't mind paying premiums back but I don't want to get penalized for something I actively told them and sent in documents for.

While doing taxes, I did get a notification that I had about $60 deducted due to not reporting changes (but I did soo). Does this mean I'm in the clear? I'm calling again tomorrow.

Flooded basement - Does Insurance company take old damaged items? Mac with sensitive data.

Had an ice storm recently, and our sump pump flooded our finished basement. This is where my family spends most of our time, and we had a substantial amount of electronics damaged. My concern is my MacBook. Will the company take it if claimed? My main concern is the sensitive data I have on it and no, wiping it wouldn't be acceptable in this situation. Thanks!

    Allstate canada drivewise

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 09:48 PM PST

Moved from US to Canada last month and got allstate auto insurance. Since the premiums are too high, I opted for drivewise that gave 15%. Last week I completed a month on the app and see a discount of 30%. When would I get this discount? Would it be after 6 months since I see that the discount % will refresh every 30 days until 6 months. I pay monthly if that matters.

    At Fault Accident [TX]

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 06:32 PM PST

I had a policy lapsed with progressive that I was not emailed or mailed about. I had automatic payments enabled and just didn't really look at the app unless they emailed me about something.

Anyways. I was driving around a corner and was slowing down. I saw a lady in her 2017 Chevy Malibu waiting at the sign and as I slowed down I looked to the left and saw no car. As soon as I faced forward this lady was still in the same spot on her phone and I swerved my car to the left. Hitting her rear bumper in a area of 20 square inches. I was going about 10-15 mph. We exchanged information and police were called to write a police report. I and my witnesses made an oral agreement that the damage she wanted to repair/replace was just the rear bumper. I called my insurance and they said that my policy was lapsed. We took pictures of each others damage. Sent them to a body shop near us to see how much a quote was. Offered to go to a body shop of her choice in person so they could get an estimate and she said no due to having to pick up her kids. Asked if we could the next couple days throughout the week and she said didn't feel like it. I pay the shop how much they quoted me on Thursday. She left the car on Friday.

She's now stating that the car has frame damage. That I screwed up her tire and that she can't drive the car anywhere anymore. I told her that the agreement was only for the bumper. I then offered to pay her deductible for uninsured driver. To which she said she didn't have. Offered to pay collision and she ignored me about that.

Her husband has been calling me and my family members threatening us.

I offered to go look at the car tomorrow at 1 pm in the afternoon together, so I can see exactly what damage I apparently caused. I will have a police escort with me due to husband being a violent person.

I'm just wondering why a person with a financed car doesn't have uninsured or full coverage on a car they owe money on.

I have also checked my own car and I have no frame damage.

    Recent Travel Insurance Claims

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 01:49 PM PST

My fiancée and I just recently returned from a trip to Costa Rica and need to submit claims for a couple different things, but are fairly confused as this is our first time dealing with insurance companies other than basic doctor's and dentist's appointments. We live in NJ and I'm still on my parents' health/vision insurance.

    1) Baggage delay: We got reimbursed by the airline (American) for $224 of $232 spent on clothes purchased during the bag delay. We also paid for the whole trip with Chase Sapphire Reserve and I see that they pay $100/day for baggage delays. I started a claim right away but now that the airline has reimbursed us, is it pretty much worthless to keep this claim going? Would the max that they'd give us be $200 ($100/day) or $8 (the difference b/w what we paid and the amount the airline paid us)?

    2) Trip delay: Due to a delay on the first leg of a lay over (both legs were originally United, but they switched the 2nd to American, who subsequently lost one of ours bags), we ended up landing in Costa Rica at around 10pm instead of the expected 1pm. We had a ~$150 hotel booked 3 hours from the airport (La Fortuna), but due to a 9pm curfew that was (and probably still is) going on in Costa Rica and due to the fact that we had been awake for 21 hours straight, we didn't think driving the 3 hours in the dark was a good idea. So we booked a hotel near the airport for a little over $100. When we reached out to United about the whole incident including mentioning the $150 hotel, they gave us x2 $100 vouchers as an apology for the delay as a whole. Is it common for people to be successful in pressing the airlines for more? I'd feel a lot more satisfied if they were x2 $200 vouchers, and I don't even think they read the whole letter we sent them and didn't even see the hotel concern. But anyway, sorry for the long story, my insurance question is: We paid for the flight and hotel with Chase Sapphire Reserve, but also had the trip covered by Trawick insurance (which we needed for COVID, but it looks like it covered trip delay as well); should I start claims with both? What happens if they both approve it; do I need to tell the other that I already got reimbursed for my hotel from the other insurance company?

    3) Medical: When we were hiking, a branch fell and scattered debris which hit me in the eye. My vision got super blurry so we went to a pharmacist and a doctor cleaned out my eye and gave me some antibiotic + steroid cream and some numbing eye drops. The doctor's visit itself cost ~$50 and the cream and eye drops cost another ~$50. I have NYSHIP Empire Plan and my normal doctor's visits are just a $25 copay, but also apparently Trawick and Chase Sapphire Reserve would cover this too. Should I start only with NYSHIP and see if they cover it before starting a claim with the other two? I'm worried since I have a deadline to start those claims.

    4) COVID Test: Last but not least, right before we went on the trip was when the US gov announced COVID tests would be mandatory to enter the US starting Jan 26th, and our flight was Jan 27th. Is it likely that our health insurances will approve the $160 COVID tests we took?

Thank you in advance kind gurus!

[CA] Do you have to use State Farm Pocket Estimator?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 05:15 PM PST

So, Friday I was in an accident and filed a claim with State Farm. On their regular mobile app I submitted photos, then the next day I left my car at the Honda Service Center where I normally go to have an extensive Automobile Status Report done; they included the mileage, every detail of a thorough inspection, the repair costs and services needed. I authorized the repairs and uploaded the report to the normal State Farm app in the claim files. All of a sudden I am getting texts reminding me to use another app which is the State Farm Pocket Estimator. I do not have the car now, and when I get it back on Tuesday it will most likely be entirely repaired. Because I did not use the State Farm Pocket Estimator app and the normal app, is this going to be bad on how I will be re-reimbursed? I feel like the process is horrible and this might make me switch ALL my insurance entirely if this doesn't play out well. Why do they have 2 different ways of handling a claim? This is very frustrating.

Forgot to tell my car insurer about second endorsement

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 01:21 PM PST

    Hello all,

I've been insured on.my policy with a big UK insurance for two years now and I have kept them up to date about changes apart from one endorsement from two years ago. It was for driving on a provisional licence without somebody in the passenger seat and without insurance. They know about the insurance one which was 6 points and a small fine but I legitimately forgot I had an endorsement for the licence issue.

I obviously want to get this sorted before I collect my car from the garage this week and I want to stay with the same insurance company but I don't want my policy to be voided as this is something to have to say for any new policy quotes. Would it be better to just go with another insurance company or phone the one I'm with to update my policy? I've read this can be a huge issue but I was wondering if somebody could shed some light on it for me.

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 10:58 AM PST

I live in NH where insurance is optional and I didn't have any. What is the best way to go about paying this off or being able to lower how much I pay?? Please help I have never even had close to this amount of money in my life.

Has anyone used Metromile for their Auto insurance? How legit are they?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 12:16 PM PST

I've been living in a city for the last year, and with COVID being what it is, havent really been using my car much besides driving to the grocery store and back maybe 0.2 miles away and driving to the park to run maybe 1 miles away.

Right now at least, it doesnt make a ton of sense for me to be paying my current policy provider $1000 every 6 months for a car I hardly move.

Once life resumes here, I plan on taking some road trips down the California Coast or maybe to the Nevada side of Tahoe, but only once in a while, and when not doing that I still wont be driving much in the city.

Metromile looks appealing because its based on how far I'm driving, but I've noticed its only in some states, so if I plan on driving through states its not covering, I worry that I'll be solely liable if I get into some kind of accident.

Other concerns being that in my city (SF) there are frequent window smash and grabs, and I need to make sure those are covered.

What has your experience with Metromile been like? Is the customer support legit? What happens when you drive through states that they dont cover? If its not too personal, how many miles do you drive and what rate do you pay per month?
