Homeowner Insurance Desk Adjusters - how slammed are they right now?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 03:54 PM PST

First time claimant here with burst pipes: how bad is it for the desk adjusters at the moment? I would like a little insight before pushing too hard on him. So far it has been like a communications black hole, I was able to talk to him twice the first day I submitted my claim a little over two weeks ago, since then all voicemails and emails go unanswered with one exception: A week ago my wife was able to get him after 5 hours of calling every thirty minutes.

I know it's a catastrophe, so I don't know what to expect, just curious what it looks like on the inside. Generally I have a long fuse, but I flip from being totally patient to blowing my top completely, and I am really trying not to here.

Nationwide Pet Insurance - How to Handle this situation

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 12:30 PM PST

So, I have NPI; it was recommended to me that I should get pet insurance.

My 11 year old cat is having some serious issues, and they're running expensive tests. I submitted two claims, and they were rejected pending more information. I got a separate letter requesting his previous medical history from before my coverage period this year. I assume it's so they can claim that it's a pre-existing condition and to reject the claim. (I submitted all test results and invoices from this year).

I haven't been to the vet in a few years; he was looking good and not having any problems. The previous clinic I used to go to has since shut down, so I can't get their records. I'm not sure I have the records locally -- I need to keep looking for them.

Does any NPI expert understand their process and what my situation is? Can they refuse to cover me? How do I increase my chances?

Note: I'm based in New York City

    Thank you

How does insurance company determine at fault if the other person has no insurance?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 11:38 PM PST

So I got in the accident when I was climbing a hill on a residential street. Another car was speeding very fast and I didn't have time to react and the other car hit the side of my car. He told me, right after, that he had no insurance or license. My question is how do insurance companies determine who is at fault if the other person has no insurance or just in general? The police said they couldn't determine fault. Does the fact that the other guy got a citation for not having a license help me any? I live in Ohio, so I was wondering how the premium increase are calculated if I am to be found partially responsible in any way?

    Homeowners insurance cancelled over roof

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 07:36 PM PST

Tldr; Homesite (progressive) cancelled our policy over our roof that is structurally sound. What can we do to prevent this from happening again?

We bought a house less than two months ago. Our roof has three broken rafters which have been repaired, but it leaves a rather unsightly dip in the roof. The house is over 100 years old, so the roof is made of rafters and random width board sheathing.

It's still functional, structurally sound and has no leaks. We've had a few roofers confirm this, and they've said that they can further brace it. But because the rafters broke many years ago, there's very little hope of getting the bowing out without a total roof and rafter replacement. I'd really rather not do that, since the darn thing still works.

However, Homesite decided that they will not cover our house because of it. We didn't even get a letter in the mail saying they were canceling our service, we just got a cancellation cheque in the mail and I had to call and ask what the heck it was for. The guy must've just done a drive by inspection (our security cameras didn't pick up anyone wandering around our property and they couldn't produce any pictures) and they refuse to accept a roofer saying that the rafters are sound. The insurance inspectors word is law.

How do we prevent this fiasco in the future with a different insurance company? We've since switched to liberty mutual, but I'm assuming they'll give us the same song and dance.

So far, I've thought about three options. Either get a contractor to further brace the rafters and give the insurance company the receipt proving the work was done, get a structural engineer to evaluate the rafters and hope they accept his assessment, or tear the whole roof apart to the tune of several thousand dollars just for a cosmetic fix.

What are the chances I can convince the insurance company that my ugly roof is fine?

    Edit: We're in Maryland.

    BBB for car warranty/VSC

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 02:35 AM PST

I made a post earlier about my VSC not paying for a repair that should be covered according to their component coverage list. I have found a Better Business Bureau listing for them with what appears to be successful complaints. I wanted to ask r/Insurance if this might be a reasonable way to taking it to the next step, or whether I should start asking on r/legaladvice instead.

Life insurance - no medical exam ok?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 08:26 PM PST

We are looking into getting life insurance for my husband, but due to the pandemic and a really hectic month ahead, we are thinking of getting the no medical exam type online. We are being super careful about Covid and try to not have to go in to medical places or have strangers into our home for the duration.

My question is - is it okay to get one of these online insurances and then get a better one with a full medical exam later on when we have more time? And then cancel the first one?

We have a newborn and realized we really need to get on this, but just don't know enough about insurance. Any advice appreciated!

Edit - we are in Chicago

Questions around hit and run process

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 08:12 PM PST

My sister was involved in a hit and run recently. A friend of her neighbor backed into her car, twice, and left. The neighbor was kind enough to provide name, number and address. My sister filed a police report, not sure of the status on that-it's been a week already. Apparently she also called her insurance to report the accident and give them information, but as far as working to track down the insurance provider of the hit-and-run party to start the claims process they said they aren't going to do anything. Is that normal? Do they have to wait for the police to finish their investigation? Obviously the person at fault isn't going to report the accident or they would have already/ stuck around when it happened.

2 people own, 1 more l ives there, too. Does 3rd person need their own contents insurance?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 01:27 AM PST

    (Delaware)

My partner, my mom and I are moving into a house together. The house is owned (in full, no mortgage) by my mom and me. My partner will not be paying rent, just her share of the bills.

Mom and I have homeowners insurance (and umbrella). Does my partner need some sort of personal property insurance, or is it covered by our policy?

My partner and I will both have our auto insurance on the same policy, bundled with the homeowners, so the insurance company will know she lives there. Mom doesn't drive.

I don't think renters insurance is appropriate because my partner isn't renting, but what's the proper way to handle this?

    Diminished Value CA

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 12:37 AM PST

Hi there- was wondering if I could get some advice regarding my current claim for diminished value out in California.

I drive a car that had appreciated in value during covid and sustained damage resulting in $18k repairs when the car had about 6k on the odometer.

I'm currently pursuing a diminished value claim (not at fault) and was doing some research and reading on here. I had submitted 2 estimates from selling to carvana, one showing the cars value with no accident on the record and one showing an accident the difference being about $6,000. I filed a claim for that amount and the insurance company is having an independent appraiser come see the car.

I was wondering if I could get the advice of the insurance experts of reddit on how to proceed after the initial appraisal. I anticipate them to shoot me a lower offer than what I was asking, in that case should I reject their offer and hire my own appraiser? Or can I just negotiate to get my my asking point because in all fairness I'm not asking for any more than what I'd be losing by selling the car now with the accident on record.

I also had tried selling the car to another company similar to carvana and they had rejected it due to some damage on the subfloor of the car and have that in writing from them as well. Not sure if that helps my case at all but would really appreciate the advice! Thanks in advance!

Questions on umbrella policy insurance premiums.

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 05:30 PM PST

Located in CA, USA. I (23F) got a quote from Geico for $1M for umbrella policy for a $326 premium. Thought that was kind of high after browsing this subreddit, and wanted to ask if at-fault accidents could increase the premium for umbrella policy? That is the only thing I really answered yes to while building my quote with a rep.

I also have auto/renters insurance through Geico, although I haven't shopped around at other companies yet for umbrella. I do not have any additional properties, assets, or boats to cover under this policy (I recently graduated from college and will be going back to school again, literally have nothing to my name but a car and student debt lmao). I just wanted the extra liability coverage in terms of lawsuit/legal protection due to a recent experience, and just to sleep better at night knowing I'm covered.

Adjuster wants to just patch paint and floors after water damage

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 06:17 AM PST

4 water pipes burst in our home in Texas. Unfortunately the adjuster came out before the water mitigation company, so his report was pretty minimal compared to the work the restoration company actually did. The desk adjuster I'm working with said we can just have an estimate from our contractor for needed repairs and they can use that to update what they will fix.

In the initial adjuster's report, he is only allowing for painting areas where drywall was removed in the walls and ceilings vs whole walls or rooms. I'm afraid this is going to look terrible. The water mitigation company also removed half of the hardwood so based on how he estimated the paint, I'm guessing he will also want to just have us try to have the floors matched. They also had to remove some of the outer wood on kitchen cabinets.

How common is it to successfully argue getting continueous paint and floors for a seamless look when finished?

I was hit at an intersection while I was waiting to make a left. What now?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 10:20 PM PST

    (This occurred in Houston, TX)

I was waiting to make a left in a intersection. When a grey Nissan SUV passed a red light and hit a oncoming Tesla SUV. The impact of the crash sent the Nissan SUV spinning into my car and completely totaled my Honda Accord. The Tesla was also totaled. I'm glad to come out safe and with all limbs intact but my car is gone. I owed $7,400 on it. I've only had it for 1 year.

I had full coverage because by law I need it to have a financed car. This is my first crash ever. Can anyone give me tips? Any forecast on what's going to happen in the next coming weeks? I'm honestly sad and it sucks even more since I'm poor. I just want any input on my situation and what to expect.

Pet insurance started end of January, sent all docs, all seemed to be fine, yesterday when I called for a claim they said my coverage was never started and yelled at me..

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 11:59 AM PST

Ok so yesterday while my cat was at the vet i went to login to my nationwide app to look into how claims work. It would've been my first one. Couldn't login and the email and phone listed for getting a code weren't mine or any i recognize. That was weird, but I figured since the site didn't let me sign up for insurance originally online and made me call (weird, red flag, but a few people i know recommended nationwide so ignored it) maybe the insursnce agent messed up. Something was clearly wrong, nbd, I'd prove i was me and get this sorted.

    • Condescending insurance agent yelled at me from the getgo and accused me of insurance fraud
    • I guess they expected more documents than I have.i explained i don't have anymore i sent everything a few months ago. I can't send what doesn't exist
    • They claim to have not started my coverage and shut down my account and they claim to have given me notice. I check my mail daily and scoured all emails and spam and everything, i never got any kind of notice
    • I was paying for insurance this whole time

This was all a surprise to me when I called just trying to sort out why the hell my phone number was so wildly wrong.

So my question because now a visit that should've been covered isn't. 1) how is this not illegal? Shouldn't they have to give you notice and make sure you received it (either certified mail or idk an email at least? Some backup option?)?

    2) is there any way I can get coverage again and retrograde the start date since frankly this was the fault of them not me

    3) if they're taking my automstic payments but refusing to cover me or give notice how is that not insurance fraud?

    4) does this sound like an insurance agent just really messed up or like i was hacked? I don't know why someone would hack pet insurance but the wildly wrong not mine email and phone are sus

Edit: whoops i live in California

Employer notified us we are losing dental coverage

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 04:57 PM PST

We were notified that our provider was changing and I now know i should have asked to be notified of any coverage changes prior to the switch.

I have bad teeth and need dental coverage. Will I pay an arm an a leg for individual coverage? Can I pay for dental cleanings at least without insurance?

I've always had coverage and absolutely let this privilege feel secure and am lost at this point. I've never shopped for insurance and I do know what to do.

    Non-owners liability auto insurance

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 08:40 PM PST

Hello, I haven't had auto insurance for awhile so I always pay for liability insurance when I rent a car (I have primary collision insurance through my CC). Where can I get this? About how much does it cost? I see a lot of conflicting information on how much it costs and where I can get it. When I google for it, I have trouble finding any providers.

    Need advise.

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 06:49 PM PST

I'm renting a house, and my tenants broke their lease and left. I thought we had a landlord agreement with the electric company, but long story short they didn't pay the electric bill and power was shut off and the house froze over. Long story short my insurance is feeling me they are going to decline the claim for failure to maintain heat. Is there any advice any one can provide? Or am I just in the hole with this one?

Parked car was hit...not sure what to do?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 12:13 PM PST

Hi everyone. This is my first post here, and probably a silly question but here goes. I share a driveway with my neighbor and one of their visitors hit my car while backing out. The damage seems minor, mostly just trading paint, but there is a dent. They left a note with their name and number. I'm just feeling really anxious about the whole thing, I've never had anything like this happen. Should I file a claim? Should I call them and just ask for money to fix it? Should I just let it slide? Any advice or opinions greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

    Replacement Value Cost Settlement

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 06:10 PM PST

My HO policy replacement cost endorsement says I must notify the insurer within 180 days of the loss regarding my intent to repair or replace personal property.

Without any other mention of time limits, could I wait a year or two to replace items I got the ACV for and claim the replacement cost? I ask because I intend to sell the house post rebuild and want to furnish a new home after relocating.

COBRA eligible after joining a foreign company (working remotely)?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 01:23 PM PST

Hi r/Insurance nerds, need your help!

    Situation:

    • Recently left a job with a US company with great benefits
    • Signed an offer with a UK-based company
    • Since UK has state sponsored healthcare, my new employer doesn't offer insurance plans
    • Due to COVID, I'm going to start work remotely (physically here in US, working for new company in UK). I expect to move in the next few months.
    • Am I COBRA eligible while working for the foreign company?

Any pointers would be amazing, thanks!
