My dad owns a 19,000 sq ft building but doesn’t operate a business, and I want to.

    Posted: 07 Mar 2021 05:32 PM PST

    Hi everyone,

I am a recent college grad. I'm looking for jobs but would really love to operate my own business. My dad owns a building in a city that has a population of 200,000. He started receiving rent from one tenant recently who runs a dance studio, but hadn't had a tenant in 8 years. So he hasn't done much with it at all.

I didn't major in business but I feel that I have an amazing opportunity at my fingertips to run one. He used to run a commercial photography business, so I've taken the liberty of using his space and equipment to start doing portraits. I'd really love to open a real business, and things I've read online make it sound too simple sometimes. I don't really know where to start, other than having a business idea, which I have yet to decide. I figure I must think about what the market demands and what kind of investments I'd need to make.

Does anyone have any thoughtful words of wisdom for me? I'd love to hear about your experience running a business. All comments are appreciated.

What would you do if you worked in a small business and you're the only one that knows one team member is planning to leave. This person leaving will greatly impact the business in a way that massive changes will need to be made. Do you share this news with the boss, or stay out of it/stay quiet?

How would I automate and staff this?

    Posted: 07 Mar 2021 06:10 PM PST

So, firstly, I run a relatively successful ghostwriting business, and it's getting to the stage where there is too much for me to handle. We take one roughly 50 orders per month right now, and our website is currently with a developer to make the whole thing even better and more simple to use.

I have no doubt that the new site will lead to many more sales, but, at the moment, I'm not sure how much more I can handle doing my part.

All entrepreneurs like to think they're invaluable to their business and I know it's standard advise to automate your system and remove yourself whenever you can, however, it's generally tricky for me as the whole business is kind of based around my expertise, quality control and experience in the niche we write in. I advise clients on their stories and develop ideas with them and I help direct and guide the writer's. We currently have a team of 12 writers, taking on around 50 orders a month with a 5 figure turnover each month. Around half of that is profit (before tax).

I've tried looking on UpWork, job sites and all kinds of places and I just don't know how to get someone to do what I'm doing. My niche is so specific and I am almost fascist with my quality control. Not sure how to find that online.

Really, I need an operations manager that can deal with each managing each writing project and looking at streamlining our system without losing quality or beyond excellent client experience (which we pride ourselves on). I then need a customer care manager to deal with customers, take calls and deal with enquiries... but when I deal with customers at the moment, I am genuinely so good at what I do as a creative director that I'm not sure how I could find an agent to brainstorm and guide clients as well I can.

I'm a bit stuck. Has anyone else overcame something like this? Do you have any advice? I mean, I'm not all about 'the grind' but I am willing to do whatever it takes to make everything a success, but right now, I'm working 100+ hour weeks and I just can't scale us - and with the new website, we have this new affiliate link where whoever posts it gets 10% of the project fee that the client pays. Our average order is around $400-$600 so for a big YouTube channel based around Self-Publishing, this would be around $50 per customer they get over to us... but I'm anxious to try this as I know we can't scale any faster! Aaaargh!

Anyone have any tips for me? Where do you find exceptional creatives that you can rely on on the other side of the world with no office?!

    Thanks for your help!

TLDR: My business based a lot around my expertise has hit a ceiling and I'm looking to work out how to scale as the business operates as an expert due to my personal industry experience.

What Are The Best Resources For Online Courses?

    Posted: 07 Mar 2021 11:53 PM PST

    Hello Everyone

Recently I opened a construction business, and for a while things we're pretty rough in terms of landing new clients, and I almost considered going back to my 9-5. Instead of closing my business I ended up doubling down, and decided that I needed to learn more about the business side of construction. I found a few online courses on Scam Risk that had a variety of reviews and testimonials on how to market my business. I ended up buying a few and since then have found some great results. I landed my first two clients, and have reopened my eyes to learning. I plan on one day hiring a team to handle the hard labor as I plan to move behind the desk full time. I love construction but it does take a toll on the body, but with that being said what are all the resources you guys use to find online courses? any course recommendations? It can be anything from accounting all the way to customer service. I just want as much knowledge as possible

    Starting a Car Manufacturer

    Posted: 07 Mar 2021 11:43 PM PST

Hello everyone, so I'll go ahead and get to the point I am interested in starting my own car manufacturer

While right now I am currently only 22 and in college, with a year and a half left till I get my degree in Finance I have always wanted to race cars and start my own car manufacturer. The only thing is I don't really know-how. As for the type of cars, I'd be making it would be kinda like Mercedes and AMG to an extent different departments one for just your average consumer and then one for a sportier consumer, etc. except Id be putting my own spin on it, making the cars more centered around the driver's experience, more so for purists but still with luxuries and manual transmission still being available while also going racing in different racing series to show just how capable our cars and engineers truly are.

I have always loved cars and feel I have a lot to offer the world in regards to car design and creating a new driving experience.

The question is how do I go about it? I know I wanna do great things but I don't really know-how.

my plan was to finish my degree hopefully get a job in investment banking, private equity, or hedge funds, and then eventually start my own bank or hedge fund and then use the proceeds to finance my own car manufacturer, or try to buy one that is down on its luck and make it my own. if this worked I would hope I am in a financial position to make these kinds of financial moves by 35 to 40.

I had always loved Lancia's and had wondered how much it would cost to try to buy it from Stellantis and essentially make it my own under the Lancia name? especially having seen what cars Lancia has sadly been degraded to making. While I like the idea of money and living a comfortable lifestyle and having a few zeros in my bank account I feel that I'd be much happier working with and creating new cars and leaving a mark on this world instead of sitting in some office looking over numbers and balance sheets.

If any of you have any questions feel free to ask, I've just always wanted to create my own cars and give something special to the world that I know others would truly appreciate as car fanatics and just lovers of the automobile in general.

and I figured you'd all have a better idea as to how you possibly envision that all working out.

Please do forgive my bad grammar as well

Should I keep using Etsy for my business platform?

    Posted: 07 Mar 2021 10:49 PM PST

I run a houseplant business, which is very trendy right now haha, but I've been trying to do this since long before the pandemic but I never had space until August 2020. I've not been putting as much work into it since the start of this year since I was working over 40 hours at my real job some weeks until recently, but since I started I've just been using Etsy.

Etsy doesn't take much of my profit and you get advertisement by using the site so it felt like a good fit. I thought I could use etsy to get a good customer base, but etsy doesn't really let you advertise your other social medias so its not exactly helpful for getting a customer base like I thought (I put a business card in each package, but only 2 out of 60 sales have followed my social medias so far).

I also want to start selling at local farmer's markets, I would still sell online so I feel like using etsy might be a little unprofessional when it comes to my IRL customers.

I feel like everything says I should just go make my own website for it, but I'm still nervous about losing the etsy traffic customers, thoughts?

Can a Business Trade Products for Service Work?

    Posted: 07 Mar 2021 08:29 PM PST

It's an unlikely scenario, but I've been curious about this.

Could one Business trade it's services for product from another Business?

Just as a general example, like could an Electrician do service work at a Lumber yard, in exchange for Lumber? Or is there some laws requiring Businesses to use money? I imagine it would be a nightmare on paper or for Tax purposes.

Would that be considered a transaction or would both sides write it off as a donation? How would a "transaction" like that be taxed?

BTW, I'm not an electrician, nor do I work at a lumber yard. I've just always been curious about whether this would be legal or not.

    Sick and supervising

    Posted: 07 Mar 2021 07:25 PM PST

37/M Been dealing with a groin hernia for the last month or so. Some days it's been fine some days it's hurt like a bugger and I couldn't work. I don't have health insurance and am not interested in surgery unless it goes on long enough. I'm a natural kind of guy and I already know the issue is from chronic constipation. I'm working on fixing that issue.

I'm a registered general contractor, I do all types of handyman work. Buy all my own tools, maintain my own vehicles, etc.

I work for 1 company for 96% of my business, probably closer to 99% of my business. I send them an invoice once a month just for my own convenience and I know they get rental income in the first few days of the month so it works out. Been working for them for 2 years now.

Real nice guy and friendly, cut throat in business.

The basic bargain is that he gives me all the work I can handle, and I work for him for $25/hr. If I was hustling for work I could probably get $35-75 an hour depending on the type of work. But then I have to account for the time in marketing and estimating. I'm a do good work fast and find all the tricks to going quicker kind of guy. If there's a faster way to do my job please show me.

He also sends helpers my way and gives me checks to pay them on 1099's. Not a legal arrangement I already know, and I do not like it.

I'm just biding my time till corona is over with so I can look for more opportunities. Am hard of hearing so real hard to communicate with masks.

Anyway I oversee up to 5 different houses at a time, doing all the stuff that doesn't get contracted out and making sure the job goes smoothly and writing nightly reports to the boss that I never include on my time.

He knows about my hernia issue as it has cost me about 1500 in lost time this last month and about 5 hours I noted on my bill as supervising.

He emailed saying he wanted to know if I was adjusting my rates for supervising when I couldn't work myself due to being in pain from my hernia. And says he hopes I'm not upset he asked. I'm frankly annoyed he would even ask because my rates are already low as it is.

Makes me want to look for a different job..... but we already have such a good working relationship over email and text!!!!!

The online job application process is broken. How to stand out from the crowd?

    Posted: 07 Mar 2021 12:07 PM PST

The online job application process is broken.

    So what's the solution?

My view on working around it:

1- Reach out to hiring managers and recruiters on LinkedIn.

    2- Cold call the CEO.

3- Record a video pitching yourself and drop it into slack groups where hiring managers may be active. Just get creative. These all things I've done that have successfully lead to interviews. You can do it too. What's one creative idea you've seen someone use to get a job?

Does anyone have any other ideas??

Career in Finance or marketing (confused uni student ) ?

    Posted: 07 Mar 2021 12:42 PM PST

    Hello guys !!

I am a uni student at my final year studying business and managment. My next goal is to further my education with a master's ( Master of sience not an MBA ) and target a more specific field
( marketing or finance ). I have scored really good on my gmat which means i will probably be able to pursuit any university program i want. Anyway the problem is i am not sure what i want to pursuit . I have worked at an acounting office from my first year of uni , and i did an intenship for 3 months at a fortune 500 company as a marketing intern. Honestly i think i love marketing but most people tell me i shouldnt waste my time and get a Msc in a finance related program because it has better money and more options. Times are difficult and i have many options but i am still really confused. Even though my academics are good and having studied 4 languages in order to fit a more global career , i dont know what i am doing and need to focus on...
