    I’m 17 and I’m trying to start a business

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 05:45 PM PST

Hey everyone! I'm currently working on my first for-profit company in the drink and fitness industry. I am currently working on making samples and have only done testing at home with my available materials. I do have a family contact for manufacturing and creating samples, my big issue is funding. I've spoken with a friend who owns multiple 7Elevens to see if my product is viable and he said he thought it was great, the only issue is entry into the industry itself. Given the recent rise in aluminum pricing, the complexities of shipping, and marketing without having made a massive network yet it may be very hard to establish my company. If you guys have any tips on raising funds or if you've overcome problems similar to mine please let me know!

Generate Sales By Growing Your Brand

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 12:56 AM PST

So I actually started my own boutique, and it's an online boutique that sells things like haircare products, makeup products, and even skin care products. You've probably heard of thousands of people with a similar idea or business to mine, and that's just the people you know there could be millions more out there. With so much competition in an industry it can be very discouraging, and I actually almost closed my business down at the start because I was having trouble making sales. Then I started to realize it wasn't about going out and finding customers, but rather forcing them to come to me. I bought a few online courses about digital marketing and after a few weeks studying I took to the internet. I made paid ad after paid ad, post after post, and hashtag after hashtag. Anything I could do to raise some brand awareness and actually develop a brand people would recognize or give a chance. The results weren't immediate but eventually I started to see results and I recently stepped away from my regular 9-5. The point of this story is that education is key and if you want to grow your business learn skills that you can apply to building your brand, also stop focusing on finding the ideal customer, but instead create an imagine that brings them to you.

    What do I do next?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 09:38 PM PST

I've spent my the past year hashing out every little detail of a my startup. I've built the website, perfected the branding and have outlined in detail how the platform functions... the website looks so good now, people I show get frustrated when they realize it doesn't work (yet).

I think I'm at the point where I just need to hire a developer or team to make it work. The problem Is I don't have money to hire a full time team. Is this the point where I look for outside funding? Do I take out a huge loan (I believe in it this much to do this)? Crowdsource a GoFundMe or just start cold calling investors?

    Pre-Seed Round

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 06:57 PM PST

    Hi All,

I'm just looking for general advice re: raising a Pre-Seed, pre-revenue round. My Co-Founder (MIT) and I (Penn State) are in the process of raising our Pre-Seed round for our startup, Muncho, that's aimed to revolutionize the food delivery industry by "mobilizing" the way food gets from the kitchen to the customer's door. I can't get too into the specifics.

We are raising $100K that will allow us to launch a BETA. We've received 2 term sheets for this round already, and we have 3 pretty renown early-stage VCs who all told us they would like to be the first big money in, post-BETA, as long as we hit very realistic targets during our BETA.

Long story short, we've had solid success so far, as we just started the fundraising process about 30 days ago. For a few reasons, we are not fully sold on the Angels attached to the 2 offers we've received. That being said, we want to keep pushing towards finding the right investor(s), as we know how important it is that the right team/investor partnership, especially in the very beginning, is extremely important.

Any and all advice re: continuing the fundraising process would be greatly appreciate, especially if it's from people who have successfully raised a Pre-Seed, pre-revenue round. We are doing all the obvious things; reaching out to investors who's portfolio aligns with our vision, and so on.

Thank you in-advance for your time!

Ex Co-founder is harassing me to remove my title from LinkedIn (left because of discrimation towards PoCs & women)

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 09:06 AM PST

i left this startup after 5 months of working with my Co-founder (both technical, whereas i'm the only one with product knowledge)

i was the only woman & person of color on the team, also the youngest, and long story short - i was being explicitly discriminated against. after confronting my co-founder, he merely joked that i should publish a Medium article about my painful experiences because there's nothing to be done about it. obviously, i left shortly after because that sounded like a fucking meme.

it's been almost 1 year since I left, and i've been significantly more successful in my new venture having found the right people.

my ex co-founder has continued to harass online (LinkedIn, Twitter, ...) telling me to take the co-founder position off because investors were asking why i left. i didn't have the time to deal with his shit so i ignored him until one month ago when i lost my shit at him - and he went silent because he probably didnt want to face how shitty of a person he was.

... until this morning i received messages on LinkedIn and Twitter from him offering to pay me or buy me a ducking iPad in exchange.

this is a straight meme, and i can't help but be awstruck because this is so unbelievable???? does anyone have any advice as to how to deal with this nonsense?

i am literally ~8years younger than this person.

When selling your solution to a company, how do you overcome objection of implementation?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 01:38 PM PST

Our product injects real time events and triggers into emails but admittedly it's a very manual process when we're rolling it out. The truth is that our product takes several weeks to really build out and clients just don't have the resources to commit to this.

I've tried leveraging hand holding, running the campaigns for the customer, doing 95% of the work.

Clients see the value. They understand it will help them be way more productive. But if they have a project going on, I get the door slammed.

What do you do to handle these objections?

Where do you research/discuss future trends?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 03:24 PM PST

For those of you that are building or want to build "the future" and are interested in trends and predictions for things like tech, AI/robotics, Fintech, eCommerce, DaaS, crypto, etc., where do you go for your information? Where do you get your news and where would you go to discuss these things?

How do I know if this start up is legit?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 10:39 AM PST

Hi! Hoping i'm just a paranoid person but I am job hunting and have been offered a position by a SaaS company and there is relatively little information available about it. I've always been told to vet a company, look online, look for reviews, but I know it must be different with a start up. Is there any way to know if the start up I will soon be working for is legit?

edit: They have a website/linkedin, social media pages, but there just isn't any information on it online which makes me nervous. obviously I'm taking into consideration that they are literally just Starting Up so I need to look at it differently.

Is there any data to answer the question “Given that a company has raised series X, they are historically YY% likely to have a successful exit at some point?”

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 12:26 PM PST

Basically, if a company has raised series A, I want to know at the end, whether or not they raise a bunch of other rounds, what the successful survivor % is. Bonus points if I can break that down by industry.

I've seen a bunch of date on the likelihood to raise another round and a few other more confusing sets of data, but nothing that seems to answer this question.

    Pitch/Presentation

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 07:21 AM PST

Hi guys, I'd like some advice please. So a month ago a sent a proposal to the city council to use their land for beach lockers (I'll be renting out these lockers to beach goers for a nominal fee). I got a call up from the council that I have to present/pitch my proposal (via video conference) and they will take a decision on there. So do you guys (1) have any online resources that can give me enough insight to produce a solid pitch. (2) have any personal advice. Thank you

    Valuation & Secondary Share Price

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 10:43 AM PST

Lets say a company at a funding round has a valuation of $500M, each share is worth $150.It then offers its employees the opportunity to sell shares to new investors in a secondary transaction at this funding round

Is the share price that the employees will be offered $150 or less than the book valuation?

Can you guys help me with the launch on ProductHunt? I need to know some details..

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 08:36 AM PST

Actually, there are lots of articles about the topic on internet, but I need to know some insights from those of you who launched at least. And it is not really important if you launched successfully or not. It would be even better to learn about fuckups and mistakes you had. In particular, right now I can't find hunter to help me with the launch, but I know that it's neccessary for the project at the very beginning to have more upvotes. I already found and wrote to some hunters on twitter, but (I am not surprised) nobody answered. So where to find those who respond then? And what to say them for making them agree to help?

Also, if you have some links to the communities on FB and different platforms about ProductHunt which can provide with useful information about the launch from A to Z, let me know. I will be extremely glad if we even have the opportunity to talk about it directly, in private chat. I need to be fully involved in this theme to be able to get all the benefits from this platform. P.S. my project is about coliving and coworking as well as RemoteYear, if you know it.

Salary expectations and joining a startup

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 08:39 AM PST

As a recent grad in CS, the appeal of joining a startup is rising to me just because it seems like a more realistic employer. My odds of getting recognized by bigger name companies may be slim and I don't mind working/learning on the job to become a better dev/engineer.

With that said, what kind of salary can you expect being hired by a startup vs an established company? What kind of compensation can I expect (benefits, etc)?

    Economical shipping options

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 06:21 AM PST

    A good day to everyone,

I am a student who is wanting to start an ecommerce store for designer A4 sheets. I have dabbled in this field before as well and have seen a decent demand for the product in the US and the UK and am thinking of further expanding the product shipment. However, most of the shipment agencies I have tried contacting are charging a price twice as much as even the sales price of the product. Does anyone know of any economical/affordable shipping companies? Any type of help would be amazing. I am actually going to use the money as funds for my further education and surprise my parents.

Note: I have used sites like shopify and feel confident enough to start my own store.

Thank you so much again guys

I'm a 23yo who doesn't have a clue of where the hell would I go if I ever needed an investor to start my business

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 05:27 AM PST

I have worked for 2 different start-ups. The 1st one was a corporate start-up of a bigger company and my current one is financed by university funds and other investors. I don't see it as a requirement but I definitely imagine myself founding my own business one day and I just wonder how would I ever convince someone to invest in my idea? Where would I go in the first place after my research? I just don't see me being able to do it.

I am then seeking your Redditor's great wisdom for answers. How do you do it?
