Quitting as an Admin During Busy Season

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 05:35 PM PST

I'm not an accountant but have been working in public accounting on the admin side in tax for about 5 years. I've been with my current firm (midsized, only one office but full service) for about 2 and a half.

I've experienced straight up bullying from other people on my team. Like HR had to get involved. Unfortunately one of those people is a partner. They are now overseeing my department. This has made my life miserable. I want to quit but am struggling with negatively impacting the firm. Our admin team is lean. I cover production and all eFiling duties. I don't know how they will pick up the slack if I leave.

I was planning on quitting after busy season anyway. I'm planning a big move with my partner. With current conditions, I'm seriously considering moving up my timeline.

I feel like my mental health is more important than loyalty to the firm but it's a tough choice. Has anyone ever experienced a busy season departure of a key admin employee? What ended up happening?

I cant believe people want to keep working from home.

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 08:44 PM PST

I don't work in big 4 anymore but if I did working from home would make me want to kick something. I cant imagine working late and then when youre done having to just wave goodbye to your coworkers and shut your laptop and go to sleep alone in your dark apartment.

my hours are much better now but even then I cant wait to get back to the office.

    Public Shit List

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 09:00 PM PST

    Does your firm do this?

I'm in my third year. I've worked for more than one public accounting firm, and they've each emailed what I like to refer to as "public shit lists" weekly or monthly.

The emails include names and performance metrics like realization. People inevitably scroll and see everyone's performance.

Why do public firms do this? It causes huge amounts of stress both ways - if you do well, there's an expectation for that trend to continue. If you had a shit week, well, everyone just saw.

New Staff Accountant to Accounting Team Leader

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 05:55 PM PST

I began working in industry back in mid-October as a staff accountant (2 yrs public experience and CPA) in a finance department of about 8 people. It was a cushy job until my direct supervisor announced early retirement and left early February.

I am now doing most of her work and am the direct supervisor for 3 AP/AR clerks. My hours have bumped up significantly and am working the same amount as my friends I left back in public accounting. I have begun a lot more financial reporting and managerial type work, such as interviewing potential employees and manager only meetinfs that would not be expected of a staff.

Is it too early to ask for a pay raise so that I am compensated for the additional roles and work I'm taking on?

Long story short: I've been working for 5 months at a company and just got an informal promotion. Should I ask for a raise now or at a later date like when reviews come around?

Fear of no job when older?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 07:19 PM PST

Does anyone have a fear of not being able to find a job when they're older, if they were thrown back into the job market? Like 55+

I'm still a while away but it just got me thinking. Like many fields, i kinda see accounting as more a young persons market, seem to be more options and opportunities for that crowd.

Looking at open roles for current and past companies there was always something for staff/managers. Rarely would a higher level position open up. So new hires tend to be not too old. Though I am pretty bad at guessing age. Working in industry btw. I'd imagine public is similar? If not more so.

I know there are plenty of accounting/finance jobs to go around, and if you have the skills/experience/communication you should be fine. But whats the job market like for the older folks?

Got me thinking if I should maybe try to start something on my own or get a gov't job one day? Probably shouldn't be worrying about this with everything else going on but want to hear what your thoughts are?

    First year, feeling totally lost

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 12:52 PM PST

Hey everyone, so I just started working full-time back in January, and am in the midst of busy season. I feel completely and utterly lost. I feel like everyone is just rushing to just get the work done and meet deadlines that I'm not even learning anything. My senior isn't really great at explaining things, and when I ask him a lot of the times he'll say "I don't know" or give a very brief explanation that doesn't pinpoint to what I'm asking, so I feel like a total idiot whenever I get a new task. I'm in tax and was put in the SALT practice, so maybe it's just the SALT aspects of work that I don't really get, but does anyone have advice/is this normal to feel like? I know starting in busy season and in a specialized area doesn't really help but just wanted to seek out any advice before I completely lost my mind. Thank you!

If I were to open my own Tax business which route should I take in my early career?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 10:23 PM PST

If I were to open my own Tax business later in life, is it better to work for local or mid-tier or big 4 in my early career?

I'm asking because each firm serves different clients and I was told that big 4 focuses on bigger clients like corporations. But, I think my main focus of clients would be individuals and small companies if I were to open up my own business. So might as well get tons of experiences working with those individuals/small companies tax by working for local?

    Any insights on this?

I don't know what to do, I feel dead inside

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 06:47 PM PST

My English isn't good, i'm an average latinamerican accountant, exactly from Mexico, I have no idea about I want and how get something

I'm 26 yo, I have an accounting bachelor degree, I studied at National Autonomous University of Mexico and I'm studyng International Business as a second universitary carrer, In my resume always say that I have a good level of English, BTW I'm Studying Mandarin Chinese and I have an intermediate-basic level. When I was on the university I loved tax area, I worked for a boutique firm on that area, but for some reasons like depression, a cirugy, my titulation formaties and others I leave the professional practice of tax area for 2 years, during that time I was working as an independient accountant giving tax advisory for Uber drivers, little professionals, teachers and other, my parents suppoted me during that time. Now i'm not falling in love for tax but i'm looking a Job, these last years stock and corporate finance caught my attention but I don't have any experience on that area.

The economic situation on Mexico worries me, sometimes I think that I must save the most money as possible and leave Mexico and live on another country like China or USA, in fact exist the popular opinion that the next Venezuela is Mexico. So, tax is no more an option because if I work and study taxes maybe my knowdelge will be useless on another country, in fact I feel so bad today because I rejected a work offer from KPMG on tax practice, my second option is a work on HSBC, in the same area but the pay is more than KPMG and (I think) the work hours will be less.

    Help! What I should do?

    Audits and review engagements

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 11:44 PM PST

I've only done ntrs and I plan on going to a bigger firm like MNP/grant Thornton/big four. But I'm nervous about my technical strength in completing an audit/review efficiently. How good does your technical knowledge need to be for audits/ reviews compared to NTR'S? I feel like I would be fired from the bigger firms for not having strong enough technical knowledge and meeting budget times
