Looking to purchase a new car and register under my LLC

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 03:05 AM PST

    Hi everyone,

This has been on my mind for a while now. I've been looking to purchase a new car to use for work and for leisure. I've gotten some advice that under tax code 179 you are able to deduct a vehicle from your business if it meant a certain criteria.

I've read mixed reviews on this topic. Some say you should ever place a vehicle under your business name while others say it's the best way to go about purchasing a car.

I'm wondering how many of you have gone thru this process?

If so, do you recommend registering the car under your business name or the traditional way? What was your experience?

How is my competitor able to offer free shipping, but price things the same?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 08:45 AM PST

Hey all, I have a question!

I happened to see on my Etsy, another name puzzle seller, marked as local. I know they are around, but last time I saw a 'local' seller, it was puzzles 'made by their manufacturer in China'. So I thought I'd peak at this seller.
My price for a custom 4 piece puzzle is comparable to theirs.. But they have free shipping! Even on replacement pieces, which are priced $4 per piece, shipping is free (I just shipped 1 replacement piece from Canada to USA and it was $9 - Within Canada that would have been cheaper, but still). Shipping an actual puzzle always costs me $15-$18.
I was tempted to say 'they must be drop shipping from China' - but some reviews mention replacements arriving in only a week, and they have a local pick up option available. It's possible they are saving money by ordering in loads of letters and just making the custom boards locally. I don't know.
Can shipping discounts really be that fabulous compared to what I'm paying? I don't know much about shipping, I've just heard of chitchats, shipstation, etc. Any shipping that requires a monthly fee currently isn't worth it for the number of sales I ship versus local pickup.
Also, I'm not super concerned about their existence or anything, I'm tiny but doing just fine in my little corner of the province. I'm mostly curious if I'm missing something I could be doing for my business/customers, or if it's some sort of drop shipping-esque thing and I shouldn't compare myself.

How/Where did you learn how to start your first business?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 03:33 PM PST

I have a question that i often always think about and never really had a concrete in depth answer.

Where do most people who decide to start a business get the knowledge on how to do it. Specifically all the logistical stuff like knowing if you need to register certain things or what licences or permits to obtain, who to contact for equipment and designing interiors if you have a brick and mortar business. All these things dont seem like theyre just common knowledge and yet people start businesses for the first time constantly.

So for anyone who has their own business or ever had one, can you please explain in your personal situation where and how you learned all the things initially when starting your first business. I always assumed school doesnt exactly teach you any of these step by step processes to do that, so im curious what everyone did or where they got their knowledge on how to do it from. If possible mention what type of business it was and maybe a small explanation of the steps you took personally to find out exactly what you need to do step by step to get it running or learning all the aspects of starting it from the ground up.

I have a spreadsheet of every payment I received in 2020. I am also now receiving 1099-NEC tax forms from each entity that paid us. Do I need the 1099-NECs to file my taxes?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 01:36 AM PST

Business is a single-member LLC. I was just going to use the spreadsheet, but am I required to wait for all these 1099s to come in and copy that exact information?

Starting activewear collection - need some advice!

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 03:04 AM PST

Hi! I have been working on a side project - I want to start a women's activewear line and I need some advice. I have not done anything like that before, therefore I have some questions and maybe someone has gone through similar situations and could give advice.

I have built website, made logo, have business name and ordered products from Alibaba that eventually did not meet the expectations. Now I am kind of stuck around the products - which direction to take next: 1) going with branded stock products or 2) customized products designer by designer.

Ideally I want to have 2-3 pieces in the collection - not anything crazy, but classy, minimalist look with certain details. I have searched Alibaba seller's and browsed their products, and I even like some items and would consider ordering them, but I am afraid that even if I put my own label/logo to it, people will recognize that these are some Aliexpress-Alibaba stock products - and would not buy. I assume that a lot of my age (20+) and older people are very well informed about items that are available from Aliexpress and even Alibaba. Even though, I have some competitors doing this - they have taken some nice designs that I have seen on Alibaba/Aliexpress, they have put their logo on it and people seem to like them… So, I am little hesitant about ordering stock products.

Another thing is that I purchased a while ago some items from Alibaba for selling but eventually they were not meeting the requirements that I had agreed with the seller. Setting this aside, even though the products were not what I had in mind, I have tried to sell them on some personal-clothes-selling platforms, but no sales have been made. As these pieces are not 100% what I wanted them to be, I have not put them on my website - I can't feel confident selling them under a brand name.

So, learning from the experience above, I have been thinking about getting a specialized fashion designer freelancer for this small collection who could help me to do designs and tech packs for the manufacturer. But I still have some questions:

I know the approximate hourly rate activewear freelancers take, but does anyone know in what range should be approximate budget for this kind of 3 pieces collection? How long it would take, how many hours? I would need design, tech pack and a size chart. Would be good to know before I write an ad post.

I have a moodboard of the designs I like and what features should be there, but I would like designer to help me with the final outcome - do I need to have the design 100% in place before I hire a designer? Or they could help me along the way formulating the final look with the details? This would be the second road to take, but I know that custom designs would be way expensive because the factories require higher MOQ and designer costs add up too.

So, to sum up.. I am quite in the middle where I should head next - take the stock products, make them branded, try to sell them and eventually see what people like and then consider custom designs? Or take the more expensive way - customized products and designer, but here is the risk of failing bigger - the design I create maybe would not be the one that people will buy?

I would like to invest budget not more than 1K USD, preferably less than that.

Affiliate Marketing For Beginners; All You Need to Know

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 02:36 AM PST

The percentage behind affiliate marketing is that:

20 percent of affiliates produce 80 percent of all income; while 80 percent of affiliates generate 20 percent of all income.

Ironic but true. You would almost certainly want to be one of those 20 percent that is earning 80 percent of the total earnings. Who wouldn't?

Follow these basic steps and you will find yourself sharing the profits that the most fortunate ones are getting.

    1. The best affiliate marketer covers their website links:

Cloaking affiliate links may not seem necessary, but it actually is. Apparently, visitors will not tend to click on your link when they see that it is leading to an affiliate program on your site once they point their mouse over them.

The usual tendency is for them to go directly to the affiliate domain. Thus ignoring your affiliate ID from the URL displayed. The best way to avoid this problem is by covering your URL. There are cloaking tools available over the Internet that you can take advantage of.

    2. Successful affiliate marketers create and distribute their articles

Writing articles regarding your market niche is necessary to expand your reputation as a specialist in your field.

You can get the greatest benefits not just from writing these articles but also from getting those articles published and reprinted by other site owners and ezine publishers. Your articles will then give you both reputation and links from other web sites because of the resource box attached at the each of each article.

    3. Affiliate marketers focus on a market niche

Loading your site with content that is focused on a certain product or service niche is one way of getting more web traffic in your target market.
There are tools over the Internet that can help you point out market niches that are important for your website.

    4. Top affiliate marketers use autoresponders

Autoresponders are important tools that make you capable of sending a timed series of email messages to those persons that signed up for them.
Most of the time, these autoresponders are sent through by a third-party provider. Look for the best provider that will cater to your autoresponder needs.

    5. Smart affiliate marketers build webpages in order to pre-sell

Create either testimonial pages or review pages that talk about and pre-sell the product or service you are affiliated with. This is the best method of getting increased orders for your chosen affiliate programs.

Many programs truly offer an article or recommended text to sell their products for you and permits duplication of those articles with your links implanted.

    6. An outstanding affiliate marketer collects email addresses.

The best affiliates gather email addresses on their website by presenting free reports thru autoresponders, giving out ebooks and newsletter signup forms.

This method is best used in building your own list of email addresses to contact. This also lets you contact potential customers that clicked away once they got into the affiliate program website.

    7. Top affiliate marketers market everywhere

You can advertise using PPC or ezine advertising depending on your market niche. Some categories of Pay-per-click can be expensive, but advertising somewhere is needed to get additional traffic to your site.

There are some good bargains in ezine advertising and some less popular PPC engines other than Yahoo's Overture and Google's Adwords you can check out.

    8. Affiliate marketers optimize for the search engines

Search engine optimization is now getting more complex as new and more webmasters participate. But the basics put into your site can add to your visibility over time.

The most critical of the many SEO techniques is the use title tags that shows individual page content. Many webmasters write a master title tag and apply that site-wide. This is the worst thing you could do for search engine ranking.

    9. Affiliate marketers have their own mailing lists

The best of affiliate marketers have their own newsletter or ezine and gather email addresses on their site to build their list of subscribers.

Having this list allows regular contact with potential customers interested in your site, your product, and your market niche.

If you understand and make use of the above-mentioned techniques, you can be one of the top people that are making it big in affiliate marketing. What are you waiting for?

How do I deal with people making false claims about my products?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 10:43 AM PST

I own an online boutique and we sell women's clothing and accessories. We buy our merchandise from vendors based in the Los Angelos fashion district. Note that most of these vendors design the clothing and produce everything overseas and sometimes in Los Angelos atleast the ones I use do design everything. They only sell to businesses with a permit. Such as Nasty Gal, Fashion Nova, Laura's Boutique and ect.

The problem is that I use Tiktok for marketing and there's a stigma of people attempted to expose small businesses. There's been claims and also false claims that we are buying from AliExpress and that we are a scam. Altough AliExpress copy's everything and anything and even steal boutiques product photos.

How do we deal with this problem? We don't want people to think we are buying from an open market like AliExpress. We're getting attacked and I don't know to handle this professionally because well the ignorance is getting to me.

What are some common problems small businesses face?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 05:29 PM PST

I am a software engineer and I want to design a tool to help small businesses. Any kind of web application, internal tools, mobile applications, analytics dashboards, algorithms etc. I have the skills but not enough info about what gaps exist that small businesses struggle to fill. I would ideally like to create a tool of some kind beta test it and open source it so that people can use it. So tell me, what problems do you face that technology could potentially help solve?

    Custom Box Pricing

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 03:59 PM PST

Sorry to hit this sub with another questions about boxes. I searched through and didn't find the answer I was looking for.

Last year I started a paper hot air balloon business (thanks to the awesome feedback I have received from a lot of you), and it became apparent to me I really need a custom box for shipping, mostly to prevent damage, but to also elevate the product.

I started working with a printed box supplier this week. The box will need to be like something plants are shipped in: the basket of the balloon would be placed in a hole, and the balloon would have free space inside the box so it is not damaged.

    The supplier is quoting :

This die could run from $800-$1600. And to print the logo we're looking at 2 plates which could range from $800-$1500 each. All together that could be $2400-$4600 in one time up front expenses.

Does this seem normal? I'm sure it is, but I am on my own and just wanted to check with someone before I make any decisions. It is a big cost for me personally...

Thank you for any insights you can provide.

Looking to start a car lot business.

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 12:15 AM PST

Hello Reddit! This year I turned 21 and I have a kid on the way. I have spent the last three years working some pretty dead end jobs. In 2020 I already was looking into starting a business and have created a pretty hefty ten year plan when it comes to business and investing.

The first major goal I have is starting and getting a stable car lot going in the next three to five years. I have been interested in vehicles since High School and in the last couple months the industry itself has really captivated me.

I do not plan to actually own a lot until sometime in 2022. Currently I am buying cars through a family member at auction price and reselling them on facebook to build up a reputation, inventory and funds to actually start the business. I have watched a lot of videos on starting this business but I have decided to come here to ask you good people a question, especially those who are in the field.

What are some things to expect when starting this business, some issues I may run into and how do you make yourself stand out among 'competition' per say?

Starting a retail computer business in the future

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 09:28 PM PST

Hello /r/smallbusiness. I'm going to need your help and guidance, i love building computers. I have been buying 2nd hand computet parts for around 50 percent off retail and building a computer with it on and selling it still below retail price. I did this for 3 years now. My question is, is building a computer a profitable business? I'm looking to have a computer business in the future but thinking about it how could I make a profit out of it? If I make it legit "buy computer parts by msrp" and not buy 2nd hand computers parts. I would only make $100-$300 per computer sold. My first target revenew would be $50,000 in a year. That would mean that I need to sell 1-2 computers in a day for 365 days. I can make a website. I can have it advertised too but I'm just lost how to actual make a profit out of it. I need professional perspective. Should I focus on being a retail computer business? Or something else? Will it work if so how could I make it work. I'm so sorry for the wrong grammars. English isn't my first language. Thanks for helping me, it means alot.

Anyone got their PPP with a chime or other commercial internet banking solution?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 09:03 PM PST

Traditional banks haven't wanted to fuck with me for over a decade because I was once young and dumb and got myself into some debt. even though the debt is paid, the damage in ChexSystems is done. Long story short; I have only been able to use banks such as Chime. As a business owner who qualifies for the PPP loan I am worried that the SBA won't deposit funds into my account.

Does anyone here know for a fact that SBA can initiate a deposit into a Chime account? If not, are there any solutions?

U.S. Bank is one of the places I applied for my PPP loan and they said that Chime is unacceptable, but another Lender (who knows I use Chime) didn't mention it as an issue.

Maybe it is just a U.S. Bank thing? HELP!

I have a business, but I don't really know how to explain what I am.

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 06:41 AM PST

December 2020. I started my company after talking to an internet friend who introduced me to his boss. They are located in a different country. They want to tap into the US market.

They are a software vendor/software developer for AR smartglasses and VR headsets.

I've since then, partnered with the manufacturer of two smart glasses to be an added-value reseller. I also partnered with my friend's company to sell software that for the glasses that is developed by the my friend's company.

It felt like I was just a lone salesmen not a business owner which I wasn't really feeling totally fulfilled. So I made a change to my business plan and mission for my company. I want to be creating work-from-home jobs for industries that historically required workers to be on a job site and improve work-from-home jobs that already exist using AR/VR. This shift in message made me feel less like a salesman and more of a company owner.

The change in mindset also made me feel like I can't do this alone. I've invested about $6,000 already and only two sales roughly $1,500 profit.

I guess my questions are; What type of business am I? and am I small business or a Start-up? Would I most likely have to give up equity to bring someone in? Should I even bring someone in?

    Thanks.

    **Edits for grammar.

7 Figure FBA Seller Seeking New Partner

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 05:53 PM PST

    Seeking a new business partner

Little bit about me - I am currently running an FBA business that was started at the beginning of 2020 and closed the year out at $6.5 million in revenue. I built this business from ground up, do all the daily operations/management tasks, and oversee marketing from a high level (my partner does the actually day to day marketing work). My relationship with my current business partner is good, but I'm seeking a new one because I want to diversify and try to run projects in parallel.

The ideal business partner would be someone who can do the following:

    1) Help brainstorm/research new business ideas 2) Can bring value to the table somehow (financing, running operations/management, marketing, business experience, business connections, etc) 3) Is able to grind through the ups and downs of a start up (this means long hours, weekends, etc)

Let me know if your interested!
