Business blew up overnight, need help with shipping! Posted: 09 Feb 2021 04:04 PM PST Hey guys! I started a wood company about 8 months ago where I make specialized wood products for military members. About a week ago, my business started gaining traction, and now I have 20+ orders over $200 each. I also have a big military supplier looking to buy pieces by bulk (which is a lot, especially when you're making each and everything individually). I need help, bad. I wasn't expecting this. I have never shipped one of these products before, and i don't know how much shipping will be. I went to the post office, and took a standard product that i sell to them and got a quote of about $20 (but this was without any packing at all). Can I order custom boxes? Do I tape a box frankenstein style? The average size of my products are about 40" x 11" x 1". I really need all the help and guidance that i can get on this, so any help or comment is much appreciated. Thank you so so much. also, do I just keep telling my customers that I will charge them when i get a quote for shipping? is quickbooks good for sending out an invoice? I need a lot of help, y'all. Like a lot [link] [comments] |
What do you think of laundromats? Posted: 09 Feb 2021 03:45 PM PST I have heard they can be a great source of cash flow. Anyone out there with experience operating laundromat(s)? What is the worst part of the business that no one tells you before going in? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 09 Feb 2021 06:24 PM PST Not entirely sure where to put this. I am angry. After 9/11, when the economy seized up and I lost 85% of my booked business, then went out of business as a result.. I got no help, but the airlines got support. 2008, after rebuilding my business, the economy tanks again and no help. 2020, covid and idiotic politicians wipe the floor with the business I built once again. Yes, I got PPP and EIDL money and I used to to pay employees who weren't working. I paid operational expenses (lease, insurance, etc). That money was gone by July. Still couldn't open and no new support. November rolls around, still not open. Dec and I close permanently. The state and federal government are responsible for putting me out of business. And don't even get me started about the insurance company. Paid in every year for interruption insurance only to be denied because, virus. I am angry. What the hell am I supposed to do now? Bankruptcy is the only option and I'm not seeing any real news about what has to be thousands upon thousands of small business facing this same situation. [link] [comments] |
What's a good credit card machine for small businesses? Posted: 09 Feb 2021 06:35 AM PST I've recently started a small business and planning to get a credit card machine. Any recommendations for a good, cost effective credit card machine? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
I am looking for a mentor here! Posted: 10 Feb 2021 01:20 AM PST I am starting my own business in the field of online psychology counselling (healthcare and personal development) and I am looking for somebody who could help me on my way and exchange experiences with me. Is there somebody who would be interested in connecting with me? Please comment right on this post or send me a message! [link] [comments] |
Why I often prefer juniors to “superstars”: confessions of a startup CEO Posted: 10 Feb 2021 03:19 AM PST Hello everyone! It's Alex again. For those not familiar with me, I'm a founder of a company that produces mobile apps for life and health. Yesterday I read an interesting article about interviews and hiring, and I want to share my findings and experience with you. Let's go! I find typical interviews a waste of time. Those typical boring questions about the algorithms or binary trees won't show the real skills of a candidate, except the fact that the person has found the answers on the Internet and remembered them. And a job talk where an interviewer forces you to write code on paper or a blackboard is generally crap. When the book about Microsoft interviews was published, all the HRs started to ask about round hatches and golf balls. Thank God they've stopped doing that already. On the other hand, some startups do not care how many sortings you know. It is highly important that you do business and fit into the team. For them, a beer interview in the park is an effective process in weeding out the wrong candidates. Having conducted a bunch of interviews, and tried different strategies, I realized that the perfect candidate (for me) has three qualities. 1. Wisdom Don't mix it up with knowledge, erudition, or IQ level. Candidate's olympiad diplomas won't save you from poor quality code. Synthetic tests or questions about algorithms are a complete bullsh*t. They show that the interviewer has no idea about how to do the job. Wisdom is the ability to ask questions, analyze arguments without making hasty conclusions, see the pros and cons of decisions, processes, frameworks. You can replace it with professional experience, but it is not always possible. The experience is more of an observation, and to turn it into knowledge, you need to make some more steps. 2. Ability to get sh*t done The newer and fresher the project, the more it is in want of people who know how to create a startup in the garage. Otherwise, the old and stable projects value candidates that figure out features and think more about logic. You need to keep the balance. It is easy to determine the ability to get sh*t done - by clear and direct replies to your questions and the so-called "fiery eyes". 3. Team compatibility IT is a team game, loners are not competitive here. Usually, the incompatibility of a person with colleagues is one of the main reasons for layoffs. I always look at whether the candidate is "similar" to the others and can make a good team. Hiring even the smartest nerd in a community of highly effective drunks is a shitty idea. "Ninja Superstar" will literally rot in a team, where every step should be coordinated with the team lead. And both of them, once in the right place, can become efficiency geniuses. Therefore, wise team leaders know how to refuse good candidates who, unfortunately, will not get along with the team. OK, we've decided that we like the person and we are ready to work together. But how to test technical knowledge? For me, the best test is to sit down and together solve a problem that my team has recently solved in the product. Such an interview shows the way a person thinks, builds logical chains, sees problems, gives reasons for decisions, etc. After that, I allow asking questions about us to understand whether the candidate is interested in working for our company. After that, we shake hands and prepare an offer or a letter of gratitude for the time spent. Do you have any hiring rules? What is your perfect candidate? And if you are an employee, what was the most weird question on interviews? [link] [comments] |
Question about FB and defriending business competitors Posted: 09 Feb 2021 09:13 PM PST Hi- Can someone tell me if it is okay to defriend someone if you are an acquaintance that has now become a direct competitor - in essence, in both situations, a conflict of interest. I should add to this that these are recent "friends" and I did this without knowing the business practices of either. My concern is by being friends with them, I am putting my name out there in support of how they do business and I do not. In essence, I should not have friended them to begin with. Thank you. Looking for an investor / partnership for my clothing business Posted: 09 Feb 2021 05:22 PM PST Hello, I'm a small business owner of a fashion brand and I started through bootstrapping all my savings into current business. I source fabric, design and sew all our clothings from scratch. I've been looking for a way to scale my business and I've not had any success with it. I've tried applying for a bank loan but in my country Loans are only an opportunity for the rich to make more money. I need a fixed asset of a car or property to qualify for a loan. I've pitching to angel investors, seems they are mostly interested in tech startups. I've tried kiva but all their field partners in Nigeria are inactive or strictly into agriculture. I don't have any friends and family at 27 because I've had to stay away to avoid being honor killed. Left home at 18 when my parents decided to marry me off to a man in his 40s, and I've had to fend for myself ever since. If there are other means that has worked for you and I've not tried, please let me know cos I don't enjoy being idle until I get lucky with a custom order and live hand-to-mouth till the next. Thank you [link] [comments] |

Since I'm self employed I'm not sure if I only include what I pay my 2 employees or do I include what I pay myself as well..... I've searched Google about 1000 different ways and can't seem to find an answer to this simple question. Thanks [link] [comments] |

Posted: 10 Feb 2021 12:10 AM PST If you know about these hassles and perceptions ahead of time, it brings new awareness to how you deal with customers and the structures you put in place to keep them happy. I have listed some of the common problems that clients ponder about Digital service agencies. 1. Engaging clients more often a.) The client may be technophobe, the Agency should not say that "Kindly check the proposal" or "suggest us relevant technology". The better approach can be to schedule a call and discuss all aspects of engagement and also assist your client with the best solution regarding Tech stacks, project tenure, payment methods, etc. Do not postpone these types of tasks to the client's diary. b.) Sometimes, the client has other works to do and they do not want to make themselves available to project discussions. Agency should not contact/reach more often to the client for every update/issue. the Agency can finalize a day in a week for these types of discussions. 2. Boasting a wide range of service For an IT service agency, It's never a good idea to just say "sure, we can do that" when you really have no idea where you'll start to get it done. Your client wants to hire an expert who can turn out quality work, not wait while you bumble around figuring it out. This over expectations of clients leads to negative results. when you boast of providing all services from designing, development, Marketing, printing, etc. and you do not have proper resources at an instant then it either leads to extension in project tenure or inappropriate delivery of the project. The solution is to be specific with your niche services. 3. Communication Gap The communication Gap is contrary to the first point. But never let the client say, that the agency is not listening to our views/suggestions. Agency should not over-communicate but must inform all progress from time to time. For an offshore/remote service provider, the project manager is necessary as a first-contact point for clients. It is required that the communication should be done in a proper way through a project management tool such as Zira, Slack, Asana, Trello, etc. It generates a feeling of trust among clients. 4. Unreasonable pricing The clients may not be aware of the digital service industry, but in order to maintain an honest professional work culture; the agency should not quote a price in an ambiguous manner. The effort estimate should be explicit and each commercials breakout should be explained to clients. Also, let them know what you have upper hand against your competitor company. Because If the proposed price is high/irrelevant for clients, they are likely to approach your rival agency. These are the common problems that clients face or distance themselves to engage with digital service agencies. The clients ultimately need:
As an agency, it's important to be aware of these common problems that customers have with agencies, also that they may be coming to you with preconceptions of these types of problems occurring. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 09 Feb 2021 11:53 PM PST Im looking for a new name for my software company. We are mainly doing online sales tools like online product configurators and quotation systems. The name should be easy to say and spell and be outside of the box. It does not need to have anything to do with software. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |

I'm a business banker at a large bank, ask me anything. Posted: 09 Feb 2021 07:08 PM PST I've been working in business banking for a few years and have interacted with 1000s of business owners. I've seen just about everything, from disputes in small family businesses, to individuals scaling a start up into a 10 figure business in 3 years, to businesses growing too fast, to some of the oddest niche businesses. 2020 was my busiest year by far. In the month of April alone, I literally met/spoke with over 300 business owners ( due to PPP and SBA loans). Feel free to ask me anything [link] [comments] |
Applying PPP Funds To Payroll Costs Only Towards The End of 24 Weeks Period? Posted: 09 Feb 2021 11:53 AM PST I just received the funds for my 2nd round PPP loan. Do I have to spread out the spending of these funds over the entire 24 week period that I will apply it to? Can I keep my employees on furlough for another 3 months (14 weeks) and then apply all of the PPP funds to payroll in the remaining 10 weeks? I furloughed my employees and myself from the business payroll late last year while still paying for health insurance for everyone. Everyone is doing fine given the additional $300 per week unemployment payments they're receiving. I would like to maximize the dollar amount my employees and I receive from unemployment and PPP funds. Are there any restrictions to spending the PPP money only towards the back-half of the 24 week timeframe? [link] [comments] |
How did you get your first client? Posted: 09 Feb 2021 09:47 PM PST Hi guys, I just set up my business in Hong Kong as an educational consultant, and I'm trying to attire some clients. Posted: 09 Feb 2021 09:39 PM PST Okay guys I need some advice.. I'm a goalkeeper coach for soccer in my local city. How do I target my Facebook ads to goalkeepers and or parents of goalkeepers that are really looking or very interested in goalkeeper training? Right now I am word of mouth, pre Covid times I had about 8-10 consistent and committed goalkeepers. Since Covid it is now down to 3 who are consistent and committed. I am currently trying to be a part time goalkeeper coach for a local club however they are not very good at communication. But if it goes well, I will be able to potentially get to know the goalkeepers and their parents and kinda dig to see if they want extra training and are looking for a private coach. But until that happens, what can I do for fb ads to target those committed goalkeepers or their parents to train privately with me?? [link] [comments] |
Running payroll for my own business Posted: 09 Feb 2021 03:26 PM PST Have an S-Corp registered in VA providing consulting services. Since inception, I have utilized a CPA to run Payroll and do business and personal taxes - which wasn't a big deal as there was decent income from the business. Post-covid though, have barely broken into 5-figure for the year 2020 and so far it looks similar for 2021 as well (90% of business was providing services for mom/pop businesses). There was no income during the last 6-months or so and thus had discussed with CPA about stopping salary and went on unemployment. The CPA says that he still needs to run payroll (even with a ZERO dollar paycheck) and continues to charge his $100 monthly fee. Would you know whether or not that is true? If there is no salary, do we still need to file FICA and/or FUTA? And if so, would a provider like Gusto be what might be more economical in my case? Any thoughts, recommendations, etc would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance. (Cross posting this in r/Tax as well) [link] [comments] |

Dealing with a ex partner / manager who sabotaged the business & frauded customers Posted: 09 Feb 2021 02:52 PM PST I'll begin with this, the manager (now claiming he was a partner) because we never had any legal contract clearing he's position has frauded over 100,000$ from customers over the time he was working here, then disappeared. I'll begin with how he did all of this: Before COVID he managed to open a 2nd merchant under his name, whenever a customer would purchase from us, he would make a double (2nd) charge to the merchant that is linked to he's personal account. Keep in mind that the customers he was doing this to were elderly, so most of them didn't know about it or when they found it it would be months later. He collected the customers information at the store and would make a double charge a month or so later. During COVID when the stores were closed he did around 40,000$ in 1 week then he disappeared (not answering any calls, texts, changed phone numbers) Now, a few weeks after he disappeared I found out he copied my entire company, and opened stores that look exactly like mine (same merchandise, layouts, even similar name) I have contacted a lawyer and they have been back and forth, my lawyer advised me to take him to court ASAP, but he wants a 15,000$ retainer fee. After all the money that this manager stole I don't have any money to pay court fees. Now I've also reported this to the police (there is a huge investigation going on) but since the investigation is so big, it takes a really long time for the detectives to collect all the evidence, paperwork, statements from the victims. Today the investigators said they are close to charging him but still have some way to go (could take an entire year) Even if he gets charged and taken to jail, he still stole a lot of money and I don't think I have a way to get back any of that. Also he took 2 company cars that were under he's name (for financing purposes), any suggestions on what I should do? [link] [comments] |

LLC Interest Income Tax Question Posted: 09 Feb 2021 08:15 PM PST If I had an LLC that borrowed people's money for 4% APY, and took their money and earned 5% APY from an online savings account, how would I be taxed? Would I have to pay tax on the full 5% interest that I earned from their money, meaning I would actually lose money? Or would I be able to write off the 4% that is paid back to them and just be taxed on the 1% margin? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
