I built a platform which allows users to create their own digital subscription products/communities

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 04:24 AM PST

Subscription businesses are growing each year. It's becoming the preferred payment model for how we consume our TV and media. But there are barriers to entry if you don't have the expertise or cash to build your own subscription platform.

The aim is to break down this barrier for digital products and offer a dedicated subscription platform

Over the past six months I have been building a platform that allows users to create their own digital subscriptions communities. You can define your own prices and payment structures, while the platform handles the payment and security behind the scenes.

Content is shared through 'Posts' which are treated like blog articles, but allow you to share anything from text style blogs to file downloads. So whether you are sharing the latest and greatest chicken recipes, or your latest piece of artwork, our platform can open the door to all sorts of online communities.

Customise your landing page potential customers can see

    Blog format community

I consider it's current form MVP, and will continue to update an enhance features available to users. I'll be posting updates here as we go.

The app is due to officially launch soon but I'm looking for a small group of people who would like to take part in the short term closed Beta. This will be at no cost to you, and I'll throw in 2 months free access once we have officially launched.

So, If you're looking to monetise your existing online content, or build a new community we'd love to hear from you - DM me directly to get started!

Is it unethical to outsource from outside of my country?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 07:06 AM PST

    Hi,

So I am starting my business here in Canada, and I am going out of my way to only deal with Canadian people and businesses with the goal of encouraging locally. However, there are times where I just can't find the service I'm looking for, or the service is better with a company outside the country... on top of it being cheaper sometimes, obviously.

So my question is how unethical is it to buy products in bulk from China, or to hire an SEO specialist from USA on UpWork? I decided to deal with local businesses without thinking too deep about it. I just keep hearing buying from China is bad and let's encourage local businesses. Is it that much of a big deal though? I didn't know it was gonna need that much time, energy, and money to find the services I'm looking for only in Canada... and that's why I'm starting to doubt if it's worth it.

    Thank you

Seeking advice in starting my own business

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 01:08 PM PST

I'm a 52 year-old male who has spent my entire career as a sales manager company-employed in the food industry with six figure annual earnings. I was laid off last August as a result of Covid and have been interviewing with companies in the food industry and was presented with a formal offer from an international company this morning. The company wants to hire me as a consultant at close to my historical earnings and has set incentives to increase my pay as soon as I reach certain performance levels and will be including an additional $500/month to offset my COBRA insurance that I would continue to maintain from my prior company's health plan. I've long thought about opening my own food brokerage and this opportunity may be the first step in finally establishing my own business.

I'm trying to determine what makes best sense with regard to forming a sole proprietorship, LLC, S-corp, etc. I have a seven figure estate, so having limited liability for my personal assets is important to me. At least for the foreseeable future, I would be the only employee in my venture, and I could only see this changing if I take on more companies as a consultant and the business grows. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

What's the most simple thing you've done that's had the biggest impact?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 07:43 AM PST

Marketing that's so incredibly obvious in hindsight. Why weren't we doing this two years ago?!.

For me it was repurposing my newsletter for LinekdIn / Twitter / Instagram. Practically doubled the reach with minimal extra work.

I love the simple stuff. The obvious marketing you're not doing is worth more than the exciting marketing you're tempted by!

    Thanks :)

    Better quoting option to Excel?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 06:58 AM PST

    Hi Entrepreneurs,

We are experiencing a workflow bottleneck when it comes to quoting. Excel is just taking us too long and I was wondering if anyone has great quoting software suggestions?

The main functionality we are looking for is the ability to drag and drop saved segments into a new quote.

For example, we'd like to set up segments like Pre-production, Production, and Post-production which have line items in them that we can customize.

Ideally what we'd like to achieve is have a client ask us to quote them and then drop in different segments based on clients needs. So if they need their event streamed, we could easily drop in a pre-saved section call Livestreaming, remove line items not applicable, add in ones that are, set quantity, number of days, have that subtotal the segment and grand total at the bottom.

Does anyone know what quoting software is able to do this?

Essentially we want a drag and drop quote system that can let us bring in pre-saved sections, customize days, quantity, etc. have it subtotal the section and update the grand total at the end.

    Thanks all.

What's the cheapest way to get an extra phone number to receive 2-factor authentication text messages in the United Kingdom?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 06:58 AM PST

I have a private account with a website and now also need to set up a business account. They don't allow one to use the same phone number for two different accounts, so I have to get a secondary phone number. I don't need this secondary phone number to send messages, make calls or anything else - I JUST need it to receive a two-factor authentication request once in a while - that's it. It seems excessive I should be forced to pay a fixed monthly subscription for that, but maybe that is the case. E.g. Skype Online phone numbers are like 40 dollars per year. What are my options for a cheap solution?

Google is not that great, and/or I am not as good at googling as I thought

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 06:23 AM PST

I've been trying to do some idea research these past few days, and ended up being frustrated with the low density of useful information from google search results. A lot of times, I would get a whole bunch of articles from different websites who try to self promote and they engage the topic very shallowly.

Is this relatable? If yes, how do you cope with this?

How long did it take you to build V1 of your product (useable product) to get it in hands of users?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 10:07 PM PST

    Entrepreneurs, founders and hackers,

The wisdom I read suggests putting the V1 of the product out in front of the user as soon as possible. Lot of projects / companies I see on YC demo day, in TechStar or otherwise seem to have an incredible growth story that just makes me cry.

How long did it take you to create a working model to put into production and get actual feedback from users?

I feel like I spent too much time on development (~ 8 - 10 months but I was mostly alone) and beating myself over it. I am now introspecting and trying learn what I could have done better, or how others do it better. The time I spent went so fast, I didn't even realize that it was ~10 months until now.

(Referring to tech products as physical businesses may have a different cycle, and many great restaurants could do well with just simple static site)

    --------

EDIT: It would be great if you could share some specs of your tech stack or technology. ML / AI projects would have a longer cycle than a physical store that just needs a static page. Of course both can be great products, but it would put things into perspective.

    Account manager VS Creative director

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 01:24 AM PST

Ok it's not really a VS but..

    I work at a not-very-up-to-date communication/brand agency, and I'm the creative director.

I'm in charge, now, to restructure the agency in its creative processes and departments.
Until now, the "creative" role was given (taken) by the 2-3 account managers. They'd do brainstorms with the team (them, a graphic designer, a strategist..) but they'd be kind of in charge of deciding the tone, style, feel, the do's and dont's, the good and bad, of all the process and outcome of the project.

Now, for the first time, we have a creative/art director there (hello!) and I need to teach them (push them away) their role and get my space as a CD/AD, my responsibilities and all..

I do have quite an idea of what are my responsibilities and what theirs, and how to structure the team, the steps, the collaborations, between different people and projects and clients..

Though, I want to hear your opinions, backgrounds, if anyone had similar problems, or just what you'd do/define if you were me.

    Thanks!!

Taking my business to the next level

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 09:36 PM PST

I launched my brand almost 2 years ago and I currently do it part time. I really want this to be my full time gig but I feel like I've hit a bit of a plateau getting around 10-20 orders per week. In order to do this full time I need to roughly double the sales I'm currently doing. What are some things people have done that have really helped take their businesses to the next level?

Looking for any advice people are willing to share :)

Is Foreign entity registration in Calfornia necessary for my project? (living in CA, company registered in Delaware)

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 09:33 PM PST

    Hi entrepreneurs,

I am a developer in CA working on a project for few months now. To keep my personal assets safe + future funding , I set up a Delaware Corporation.

Is it necessary to have the business registered in California as foreign entity? I don't do business (at least yet), and not sure if my project will start earning revenue anytime soon.

Don't have anyone else on the team but myself. Needless to say I'm all the "officers" in charge of the company.

Do I have to shell out $800 annual tax just to live in California and do my project?

Please share your wisdom on company setup keeping taxes and administration limited, at least until there's revenue.

    Thank you,

How do you all pick an attorney?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 08:39 PM PST

I'm trying to figure out when entrepreneurs decide, hey - I need a lawyer.

    1. When do you think you need one?
    2. How do you decide on what kind? Experience, size, cost?
    3. What do you think makes a good lawyer for you and your business?
    4. Does having a specialty in your industry play an important factor?
    5. Other factors?
