Has anyone taken a firms sabbatical offer?

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 09:40 PM PST

At the two large firms I have worked at, both advertised sabbaticals as an employee benefit. I am curious if anyone has ever taken one and what the typical policy is like.

My current firm has also been advertising fully remote working arrangements but my office managing partner has made it clear that he disapproves. This has made me slightly worried that asking or taking a sabbatical could be bad for my career. I am currently a senior and am not sure it would be appropriate to leave my teams without a senior for that long.

I am more than happy to take an unpaid sabbatical for 1-3 months to allow myself to travel more. I feel that it would be beneficial to the firm as there are significant times of the year when we are short on work. I want to suggest it as a way to reduce costs during less busy times. I'm not sure this is the right approach. I would be interested in doing a sabbatical on a yearly basis.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Tips for First Year Tax Associate

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 04:44 PM PST

I start working in early January at RSM, & i'm pretty nervous overall because this will be my first real job. Idk why, but me being nervous = me feeling incompetent. I don't have the strongest excel skills so I've been trying to learn through excel books / Youtube.

I'm going to be working in SALT; does anyone have any tips for working in this industry? or any tips for a first year associate?

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 06:18 PM PST

Personally, I'm having a grand time with my friends. I spent the last 5 years always saying I was busy (studying/working through school, then CPA exam, etc.)

It has been so great just knowing there are people who like to be with me, who I can have fun with. We are doing it safely of course.

I hope you all are recharging. It's been a welcome change from the firm and that terrible lifestyle of sacrifice for shit money, shit work, and shit people.

    Financial Analysis or Accounting?

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 05:57 PM PST

Hi! Just want to ask whether which of these two is better to take. I'm stuck and unsure of which one to take. I have a bit of background on accounting but I have no insight on financial analysis. Anyone care to share your thoughts about these two? Thanks

Need advice for fall 2020 graduate

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 09:36 PM PST

So i graduated this semester and i recruited for jobs and did not get a full time position for next year. I had many interviews but nothing amounted to a job offer. I am really discouraged as I dont know how i could of made my chances better. My gpa is not bad at all and i have audit internship experience. i am even doing an audit internship during this fall and spring, its a small cpa firm that doesnt offer full time positions. So after may 2021 I will essentially be jobless. So now I dont know what to do since public accounting firms usually hire a year in advance. My plan is to study and do the cpa exams even though i believe it will be expensive with myself paying the out of pocket costs. Then when fall 2021 comes, ill just apply to the firms again and hopefully get hired. Is this a good idea? I am really lost and it seems like i dont have much options.

Better CPA prep for Gov't accounting?

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 06:38 PM PST

Becker absolutely loses me starting in F9 Module 4 and they do a horrible job with the actual accounting within governmental funds.

Any free resources that actually explain a lot of these accounts and how the accounting actually works?

They just throw these debits & credits with names that have no meaning to me. "Budgetary Control" Are these assets? Expenses? What is going on here?

At what point do I reach out to a recruiter?

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 10:00 PM PST

I am pursuing a Bachelors degree in accounting at WGU and have goals to work for a Big 4 firm someday. My cousin works for KPMG and was telling me a while back that he could connect me to a recruiter if I ever wanted. At this point I have frankly only taken one financial accounting course and have still yet to take almost all of my accounting courses. Would it be good to connect with a recruiter asap, or would it be better to wait until I have more knowledge about accounting so I don't make a dumb first impression?

How do you find clients as an independent accountant?

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 11:48 AM PST

If you're an accountant who works for yourself, how do you find clients?

    1. What are your primary acquisition channels? (e.g., referrals, search engine marketing)
    2. Do you have an online presence (e.g., website, social media)

I've always been curious why more accountants don't have a social media presence.

Need a new job title but can't be senior accountant (Canada).

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 01:20 PM PST

TLDR: Need suggestions for a new title as HR wouldn't give me Senior title.

Background: In 2020 I have finally acquired my CPA through industry experience route. With my designation I talked to my manager and controller about a potential promotion from intermediate accountant and a raise. (They were always keen about giving me a senior title way before getting my designation but corporate HR have always rejected the business case as I dont havey designation yet). After knowing the news that I got my designation, they immediately brought up a new proposal to corporate HR to promote me. Now I am hearing back that HR wouldn't give me the senior title because my colleague on the team, who has worked for the company over 9 years with CGA isn't Senior yet so to them it doesn't make sense for me to get senior. Her title right now is accounting specialist. I know the true motive is to save some money by not giving me senior title. My boss was unhappy with the decision so she is suggesting that I come up with another title so I'm not stuck with intermediate title. Any suggestions for a higher title that would look good on resume?
