Why Can't I Remove My Roommate - My Geico Insurance More Than Doubled Over Night

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 05:03 PM PST

Hey everyone! I'm a 23 year old male in MN, and I'm in a bit of a pickle. I had reported a claim for an animal incident (no-fault according to Geico, but I was aware that my raises could and probably would rise due to extensive damage on my vehicle) early this month. My roommate (37 M) and I were in the car, but we were uninjured.

About a week ago he was added to my policy without my knowledge. He has several at fault accidents on his driving record, but no longer owns a car and doesn't drive mine. My rates saw about a 2.31 times increase to about 400 bucks. I called Geico and they had said he was a definite factor for the rates increase. So he bought his own non-owner vehicle policy. I presented them with proof of policy and I requested that he would be removed. But they said they wouldn't because he lives with me.

I called my local office, and they confirmed that him being on the policy would affect my rates. Then I called the national line again and on the same call I was told by one service agent that the reason for the increase was an at fault accident in 2019 (that I couldn't be told about, because neither Jasper or I was involved according to a claims agent). And then another service agent blamed it on the animal incident, which honestly would make more sense. But after being told several different reasons I'm not so inclined to drop it.

I'm just not sure what to do because in the long term this will be near impossible to afford. And I don't want my friend to have to keep a policy he won't use. And each time I call Geico it seems like I get a different answer so I could really use some help, thanks!

TL;DR: After an animal incident my roommate was added to my insurance and it went up over 231%,.

Washington State: Hit by uninsured driver without valid drivers license

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 12:20 AM PST

So I was hit by an uninsured driver without a drivers license in Washington state. The lady basically changed lanes and merged into my lane and my car. Fortunately I have the following:

    • Uninsured motorist coverage
    • Dashcam showing her car merging into my car, the license plate of the at-fault car, and her face all in 4K revolution.

Called 911 and shared the dashcam video with the police and gave my recollection of events. Then called insurance and shared the case number, police officers contact info, description of damage (it's quite extensive and my car was less than 6 months old). I also offered the dash cam video but the insurance agent wasn't interested in it. Is this because the at-fault driver was uninsured? Couple questions -

    1. Will my insurance premium go up due to this?
    2. Is it normal for insurance company to not want the dash cam video?
    3. Do I need to seek out anything besides repair bill? For example, I can see this impacting - disminished car value post repair, factory warranties, and issues arising from subpar repairs. We were fortunately not injured physically.

Renter’s insurance - should landlord be added to policy as “insured”?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 08:49 AM PST

Our landlord asked for proof that we have renter's insurance and upon reviewing said policy, asked to be added as "insured" on the policy. Our research indicates that it's far more common for landlords to be added as "interests" on policies, not "insured", since adding as "insured" means there's no recourse for us as renters if they are negligent (faulty wiring, loose step, etc).
Our insurance agent doesn't have tons of experience between the two. I called a different office insurance office and they said adding as "insured" is common and fine, protecting landlords if someone visiting us has an accident, but I want to do what's best for us, as renters.

Please advise. I greatly appreciate any feedback.

    Loss of Use

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 05:41 PM PST

Hi all- our home had a water leak, our insurance (USAA) has so far been great and we have already met with the contractor and project manager as our entire downstairs floor has to be replaced. We were told to expect to move out for 2-3 weeks 😬. We have a rather large home that includes an in law suite as my mom lives with our family. Total of 3 adults and 3 children. Also five dogs and 3 cats. I am feeling super overwhelmed about this! We are hoping to stay in a rental but can anyone explain how this works? Do they give any money up front? We are right on cash and all of the rentals we have looked at obviously require payment up front but it is a lot.. like 3-5k for the 3 weeks. Not to mention boarding our zoo of pets. Does anyone have advice or info? Much appreciated ☺️ edited to add we are in Nc

Parking lot accident: Texas (at fault state)

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 11:28 PM PST

My SO was backing up, only about a feet of her car (honda insight) was out and collided with the other car(VOLKS BEETLE) a pretty small car. Passenger side Airbags are deflated on her car. The other car's rear tire was flat, and the quarter panel was dented. Both have the same insurance company (Geico). I know the other car had right of way, but seeing the impact and the damage, it makes me believe my SO that the other car was speeding. What can be done in this case? Hire a lawyer or let it go? Suggestions and comments are appreciated.

Foundation blasted daily for a year due to City project.

Homeowners policy appears to be worthless due to earth movement clause. I have an Attorney and shelled out $3500 for crack monitoring as my house is literally splitting in half. I will have to file a suit and wonder would I be out of line to ask to go for replacement value on my home? The estimate to repair the basement alone is between 50-70k. I have lived here for 20 years and love my home and this has been crazy stressful, just trying to figure my way through all of this.

    Belair app and ticket

If I were to be pulled over and the officer believes I was using my phone while driving, but I wasn't. Can I use the Bel Air direct app to prove my innocence? The app tells you when you are using your phone through hard taps or even voice usage during a recorded trip.

Traveler's Insurance - Electronic Documents or Paper Copies Only?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 09:02 PM PST

About ten years ago, shortly after moving to MO, I used an independent agent near our apartment who said our best auto option was with Travelers. The PDFs of the declarations and ID cards provided by email from the agent were low-res scans of print-outs.

On the ID cards, my wife's name was misspelled - when we pointed out the error, what we got back via email was a scan of the same paper copy with her name corrected using white-out and pen. I attributed that weirdness to the agent, and we switched to a captive agent that was cheaper at renewal time and I never thought about it again...

...until my current renewal rate comparison here in TX. Its the first time an independent agent has said Travelers was competitive for home&auto, but when she sent the quotes, same deal as before - low-res scans of print-outs with handwritten notes (granted this time its only a quote, and not the declarations page).

Q: Does Travelers do electronic documents? These are the only two instances across the many companies I've quoted and been insured with that I remember having obvious scans of print-outs be provided to me, so I'm not sure whether to attribute to Travelers, or to the independent agents.

Do I need a new insurance agent?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 08:04 PM PST

I noticed that the insurance agent that is listed on my auto policy is no longer working at the insurance brokerage that I bought the policy through.

In fact, looking at social media, it looks like the insurance agent listed on policy hasn't worked at the agency for a few years.

In the past, I think the insurance agency would just assign me a new agent whenever the old one quit, since I have noticed that the name on the renewals would change from time to time.

Do I need to ask the insurance brokerage to assign me a new insurance agent? I have never really found a need to reach out to an insurance agent. Whenever I have needed to make changes, I have always called the insurance company directly.

    I'm located in California.

Letting friend borrow car for a few months before they buy it from me- does insurance care?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 07:39 PM PST

    Hi all,

So I plan on selling my car (2018 Nissan Rogue, if it matters) to a friend of mine, but she won't be able to get a car loan to pay it off for another few months (she's coming off maternity leave and looking to start a new job soon). I told her that for the next few months until she can get the loan, she can just pay me to make the payments on it and I let her use it.

I live in NY and I use a local agent who wrote me through Traveler's. If I let her use the car, in the event there is an accident while she's driving it will it still be covered, or am I SOL?

Option B: Is she able to take out a policy on it right now, with it still being titled/registered to me?

    Thanks!

Please Help - Health Insurance Question

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 03:36 PM PST

I do not understand insurance- I was referred to a specialist and need surgery. No one else in my state can do this specific surgery. However, this specialist doesn't take my insurance coverage, which is through my spouse's employer. What are my options? Can i buy my own individual health coverage with Blue Cross Blue Shield and present that to the specialist as my primary coverage?

Im frustrated, because i chose to get on my spouses insurance over my company's insurance (for a couple reasons). Of course the open enrollment period is over now for my company. Am i just out of luck until the next open enrollment?

An out of state drive just drove straight into me while I was stopped in a turning lane. Have some questions.

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 06:43 PM PST

My vehicle is insured with Geico and they could make it go away for a $500 deductable, but I don't see that as the best option, because I was stopped in a turning lane with my turn signal on, waiting for traffic to clear.

So I called their insurance company and judging by the CS rep it's a real rinky dink operation. I don't think they'll be flying an adjuster out here to look at the vehicle.

I literally just purchased my vehicle last week. It's my first nice car ever. I don't want a dent puller/ bondo job. I want a 100% fix. And I want to be sure they didn't bend my control arms or otherwise destroy something.

All outward appearances indicate that this was a minor, low-speed collision, but you never know. So, I would like to have a dealer repair it if possible.

What's my move here? I've never been in an accident, ever. I just want my nice car to go back to being nice.

My friend is an insurance adjuster, and he's told me horror stories about the way both he and shops deal with this type of thing. I don't want them to hammer the bumper out. I want replacement parts. I dont want any half measures. I want it back the way it came off the line.

Can I bring it to a dealer for the adjustment and repair?

Home Insurance Approved Demolition On Mold Mitigation, But Disputes The Invoice For The Work They Approved. Am I On The Hook For This Work? Please Advise.

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 06:18 PM PST

I got an evaluation from a restoration company who advised me to file a claim for water damage after a plumbing failure.

My insurance company approved mitigation services before getting an estimate from the contractor and only sent out an independent adjustor after the mitigation was completed. My insurance company has made me whole and put my family in a hotel while this all taken care of. They've been wonderful to work with.

However, they haven't paid the contractor for the mitigation services because the contractor's invoice was "high." (I saw an email between the contractor and my insurance.)

What happens if my Insurance says, "You did $4000 worth of work."

But the contractor says, "No, I did $11000 worth of work."

Am I going to have to pay the difference here? If so, is there anyway to dispute the contractor's invoice? Thanks for your help.

Switched auto insurance, they failed to notify the bank and my car was repossessed

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 05:50 PM PST

So basically i switched over for a better rate and the insurance company failed to notify my lender. My lender, assuming i didn't have insurance, applied insurance for me without my knowledge. months go by with me making my regular car payment and now my car was repo'd due to non payment of the insurance even tho i already had my own. They now want me to pay the insurance that they provided before they give me the car back. this just doesn't seem right to me

    (TX, Geico) First Accident/Hit&Run

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 05:43 PM PST

So I got into a car accident yesterday at a red light. Got rear ended by another car. The driver drove off before I could park and hit my emergency hazard lights on. By some miracle, someone took a picture of the entire thing with the most perfect detail.

Cops and Geico have their license plate and know who they are. I was able to see who it was too. I tried looking them up, and it appears that they don't have insurance and also the individual from my research appears to be an undocumented immigrant.

My entire rear bumper needs to be replaced, there's a panel gap that is visible via my car's trunk, and the muffler dropped. I drive a 2014 camry xle.

How long does it normally take before this situation is resolved? Such as getting an inspector to check it out, tell me if I'm good to get it repaired or if I'm SOL? Also, what about the other party? Since it's a hit and run, does it mean automatic admission of guilt? Or is this going to be a long battle between me and the other party?

rooming your home while out of the country question

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 02:55 PM PST

    Hi,

so my insurance covers r&b tenants on my primary residence but not airbnb short term. I am hunkering down stuck OOC, and I have family caring for my house. I've got someone interested in staying in my home for a couple months but I don't necessarily want to do a long term lease in case they decide they want to stay longer. The way I'm thinking about doing it is to do a month-to-month room agreement so I can easily ask them to leave as we agree

my question is- is there insurance implications with this because I'm living there (primary residence) but I'm out of the country for the duration? How would I properly solve this? (ie. written approval from ins saying its OK?)

    I'm in Ontario

Auto Insurance not giving total loss payout

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 02:33 PM PST

    Good afternoon ,

My truck was deemed a total loss about 3 weeks ago. Myself and the insurance company had already agreed on the total loss payout and i signed the vehicle over to them.

I completed all necessary paperwork for title procurement as the vehicle still has a lien on it.

After being told i was good to go and waiting on my lien to be paid off and the rest of the funds to be deposited into my account i decided to reach out after a week had gone by.

Come to find out my insurance and the body shop still have a pending transaction that has yet to be completed. The body shop needs to mail a check back to my insurance. The problem is they won't follow through with the total loss until the check has been received. The person who writes the checks at the body has been out of work for health reasons but they said they will mail it when they can.

Essentially it seems like my insurance is holding me "hostage" in this situation and now I'm stuck being the middle man and have to continue paying a loan on a vehicle i don't have anymore and i am still car less.

Is the legal ? Is there anything i can do ? Thank you

TL:DR - Auto insurance won't pay total loss payout until it receives check from body shop. Weeks have gone by and i am carless and stuck being the middle man.

Need a short-term medical insurance plan in Washington State

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 07:24 AM PST

Hello! I am moving to Seattle on February 18 on an immigrant visa (CR-1 if relevant). I will be covered under my husband's insurance beginning March 1. My current policy covers me worldwide excluding the United States (of course), but my husband's HR says that they cannot add me onto the policy while I have an existing policy (even though I'm not covered!).

So, I need a short-term medical insurance plan for the gap. Given that we're in the middle of a pandemic, I don't want to take the risk of being uninsured even for 10 days.

I am feeling kind of overwhelmed with all the research I've done, and while I know this is a long-shot, does anyone have any recommendations?

    Thanks!

    Florida condo/townhome/villa insurance

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 12:46 PM PST

I may be purchasing new construction home that they call a villa. The building has 6 units with driveways and garages. I was doing a quick quote online for insurance and it asked "Amount of built-in fixtures in condo". It then asks "Value of contents". How do I calculate the "fixtures" amount? It is 2 bed/ 2.5 bath/ 2 car garage, Loft and 2nd bedroom and full bath upstairs. The unit is 1747 sq. ft. 10x15 lanai (I think). So, is there some sort of calculations for "fixtures" (based on sq ft or #baths etc?). Then it asks contents which I can probably just estimate. Would contents be anything not attached? like Washer, dryer, fridge? do range and dishwasher go with fixtures or contents? Purchase price will be anywhere from 270k-290k. Any info would be appreciated. I own a sf home now so I know it's different and a different type of policy. I'd like to just know around what the cost would be or at least how to estimate. This is in Florida. Thanks.
