    The Psychology of customers

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 02:15 PM PST

Can anyone recommend a book and or video on the psychology of the customers. I own a small restaurant and I don't understand why some weekend are super packed, non-stop working and then the next it's completely dead. It's not like we are advertising super crazy the week before it's super busy. I feel like it can't just be a random occurrence. Thanks in advance!

    Invoice/delivery note/quote software

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 04:37 AM PST

    Hi All,

I'm looking for a programme that allows me to generate quotes/delivery notes and invoices easily on the go.

I currently have a excel template which if I'm honest, could look better. I've seen the likes of quick books and Xero in the UK but curious to see if there's anything more suitable to my needs.

Most invoices etc I've seen are a simple excel sheet but whenever I try to do that it seems to come out looking a bit naff.

    Hi,

I am interested in opening a bar and I am in the very early stages of thinking etc. Has anyone got any suggestions as to what information I should be gathering, what kind of costs I could be looking at upfront etc. Any information would be a huge help :)

Expenses as a blogger/journalist - can I claim back meals that I’ve reviewed? UK based

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 04:46 AM PST

I run a location based food and drinks blog that primarily shares recipes and reviews local restaurants and cafes. It reaches a big audience which allows me to earn money from its ads and sponsored content.

Whilst some eateries invite me to review their venue for free, there are some places that I visit (equipped with camera and a notepad) purely to review for my content and obviously I pay for this.

I definitely consider doing this a business investment, as it leads to content that drives traffic and ad revenue. However, I can't see if it falls into one of HMRC's meal expense allowance?

Does anyone have any experience of this? It looks like a bit of a grey area

What you wish you knew before purchasing a vehicle for small business

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 04:13 PM PST

    1. What's your advice for business owners looking to rent/buy corporate vehicles? E.g. understand vehicle tax deduction, loans, mileage deduction/liability, test drive, etc.
    2. Should I buy a used/new vehicle?
    3. What should I know once I purchase a corporate vehicle? E.g. know your body shop

Hello all. Well I have 3 service endeavors making cash, they feel like one. How do I report this properly?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 02:17 AM PST

Hi all. Hope your new years going nicely. I just recently quit a job in exchange for a healthy environment.

I've been following my instincts and somehow now have 3 well paid cash gigs.
    Im in southern USA

    My gigs:

One is teaching mindfulness/calming practices to people in my community.

Two is Im cleaning houses for friends and family.

Three is busking with my acoustic guitar around my city. (Been playing over 20 years so Im playing well)(super relaxing sounds to soothe people during covid life ;)

I live in a medium size city area near the Mexican border where most people still use alot of cash and are typically paying me this way.

Im really enjoying myself and finding passion in all three activities. Somehow I've built momentum and my instincts are telling me to actually keep going yet become more professional and refine.

All three feel integrated, connected and like "one job" lol. Cleaning, comforting and serenading. I have a supportive partner who is really onboard with this.

Quite unconventional yet its all been years in the making as I've been a clean freak, musician and meditated every day to reverse past ptsd. So im happy to share these skills in a gig career.

However I do want to have a retirement, medical, and a professional income to report for a mortgage one day.

I'd like to officially start my business start date on Feb 1st and keep good records from then on out.

I also plan to get a new bank account and start depositing cash in it and link a cash app, venmo, and paypal to it also for those who choose to pay that way in the future.

I do plan to set aside 30% of everything I make to self employment tax.

Yet Im clueless on how to do taxes on all this.

Its not "one" business so Im not sure how to structure this (random gig money? One multifaceted business, 3 separate businesses?)

Or if Im supposed to say what I did to make the money on separate tax forms?

Or lump all the money into one form, not mention what I did to earn it and simply report it?

Do I do 3 separate quarterly payments, or 1 combined quarterly payment? Wait til end of year?

Lastly are you supposed to start a business in beginning of the tax year? How do you coordinate what "your tax year" is when you randomly start in Jan 2021.

Clearly im clueless here and admittedly somewhat of simple artsy person. Yet Im willing to learn to become truly professional. Eventually expand to a youtube perhaps also. Which may add 1099s to the mix for even more complexity ;)

I don't understand all the advice I read online how to do tax on all this.

I do want to pay tax and pay my share to help the infrastructure and well being of my fellow americans yet I just don't know anything about self employment tax protocols, and even less so if one has several cash gigs going at once.

Any assistance in this would immensely appreciated. Have a wonderful week everyone

Need data from any business willing to be a part of my graduation project (pls)

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 02:04 AM PST

Hi, I'm a graduating senior from Egypt.

I am thinking of sending this email to businesses, but I don't know where I can find them:

Hello, My name is [name] and I am a graduating senior at the [univeersity]. I am writing to you to inquire about an opportunity to use your business as a case study for my graduation project. In this project, I will essentially propose a basic Human Resources system based on your business needs. This can include an applicant-tracking system or a record keeping system to better mange current employees' absences, complaints, compensation, and so forth. Any data used in the project will be kept confidential and any inquiries to view my report prior to its submission would be granted.

The project will consist of a report, a mock-up website of the proposed system, and a final presentation to my class. In the presentation, I will be required to have a representative of the business available on a Zoom call as they will be asked 2 questions at most regarding their thoughts on the system.

If you are interested in being a part of this project, please feel free to reply with any further questions. I look forward to hearing back from you!

    Regards,

If anyone has any suggestions to find businesses who would cooperate or if you have your own business and are willing to be a part of my project, please drop a comment below :)

edit- these are the requirements for my project

edit2- been told that it doesn't have to be a business, could be a school, hospital, bank, etc

Does anyone have any experiences about NBKC for a small business that isn't a startup?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 05:30 PM PST

I am specifically looking to know if they force Plaid for external bank connections or do they take good old transit/routing info. Also would help if they offer checkbooks or virtual check capabilities.

    Thanks in advance.

    Recommendations on reading material

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 09:03 PM PST

In the next few years I will be starting my own business. I have tried before when I was younger, and made financially irresponsible decisions that brought it to an end earlier than I'd like. (about 2 years) I am older and much more experienced now, and am ready for my 2nd go around. The business will be an HVAC/R business, service & commercial restaurant equipment sales, including parts. A few things I know I need to prepare myself for - Inventory storage, tracking, and organization, (Online and local sales as well as technician usage of parts), and bookkeeping. Though I've gotten much better at managing my finances personally, I still have no clue how to properly keep the books for a business with around 3-20 employees. In this business many service clients are on a billing cycle. They may get service today but not pay for up to 90 days. Concerning parts, I have sold over $150,000 on ebay, but spread out over 10 years. How do the guys selling 50K a month online manage their incoming inventory while it sits on the shelf for sale? I am wanting to get into some reading on the subjects. Do any of you have a recommendation on some book on the subjects of inventory and bookkeeping? In addition, any books about how to bid on new construction jobs would interest me as well. Thanks, John.

    Any good CRM recommendations?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 08:21 PM PST

    Hey.

I'm looking for a CRM that pretty much is only for creating customer profiles and adding notations to them. Most of what I'm seeing has pretty advanced UIs which is nothing what I want. Any ideas or recommendations?

NCH Reflect is kind of what I want except it's a bit simple. Heard access is decent too.

Do you feel like you have a good relationship with your employees? How many employees do you have?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 09:28 AM PST

I'm doing some research, and I'm curious if small-medium business owners feel that they have a good relationship with employees, especially in terms of getting feedback from employees.

For example, do you think your employees would feel comfortable going to you with ideas or negative feedback? Would you want them to?

    Startup Costs on taxes

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 05:45 PM PST

Started a home-based business later on in 2020 and had to stop via COVID. Going through my taxes I'm trying to find the best ways to indicate startup costs?
Does a cash safety net/Emergency Fund count or is this all just overhead? I had money set aside when I started this business for any unexpected expenses or what I would need to keep it afloat. I didn't realize expenses before the business was open counted so I'm trying to backtrack the best I can. Any help would be appreciated.

    quick shipping and stamps question

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 04:44 PM PST

im starting to create small earrings so i can launch my store but I'm a little confused on how this selling this works. I bought small mailers cause the earrings are not going to be huge and not heavy at all so what I'm going to be shipping is very light and small and fragile and i remember ordering earrings from a small business and they came in the same mailers i got and there was a stamp on it that said 50 cents so i guess i can assume that shipping cost 50 cents but i have no idea how that works can someone explain. Cause i have the mailers i just have no idea where to get stamps and how this all works. My dad told me i can just drop off the package at my mail box cause there's this little slot where u can put packages you want to ship but idk if that's correct. can someone explain how you send packages and where you get stamps? etc. thank you so so much <3

Am I allowed to offer incentives if individuals wear masks?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 03:39 PM PST

I know this is a weird question but I live in an area where wearing asking someone to wear a mask is the single worst thing I could possibly ask them. I'm wondering what I can do to prevent this trend of lost sales and uncomfortable encounters without being discriminatory. I want to offer a discount to people who wear a mask and I was wondering where the legality would fall on that. I know Chik-fil-a gives out free sandwiches to patrons wearing a cow costume but that doesn't prevent individuals with medical disabilities from participating. I was hoping I could offer an incentive like 10% off to individuals who wear a mask properly throughout their visit to the store and if I could advertise that promotion. I'm all for public safety and with these new strains out and many at risk family members I want to keep everyone safe.

Business credit cards and building company credit?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 11:35 AM PST

    Hello fellow small business owners!

I have questions regarding small business credit.

I have obtained two business credit cards in order to try and build my companies credit, one of them is from capital one and the other from AMEX.

I recently saw on a post that AMEX only reports to dun and Bradstreet and to SBFE. So in other words they are only report to two of the 4 credit bureaus. And capital one reports to 3 of the 4.

Will this hurt my companies credit? Should I look for another card (I.e. chase ink) who reports to all 4 bureaus?

Annual "WTF Does Turbotax account for my business differently than QBO does" question

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 08:58 AM PST

I go through this every year it seems. New one this time, I think. I do my bookkeeping for my small business, which is online retail using Quickbooks Online. It's set up as a single member LLC, so is included in our personal income taxes, and my husband does our taxes using Turbotax.

This time TT calculated that I had twice as much net profit last year than QBO computed. He said it's because I have a couple items under COGS that TT considers to be plain expenses, not COGS. Those items are merchant fees for processing credit cards and Paypal transaction fees, and shipping (to customers). TT says that those are business expenses, not COGS. Anybody here know which is correct?

(FWIW, we are going to have a CPA audit all of this. But in the meantime, I thought to ask here.)
