    Tips on opening Domino's franchise

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 05:51 PM PST

    Hi Folks,

I'm thinking about opening a Domino's franchise in Potomac, Maryland for my parents to manage.

They've recently immigrated to the country so do not have a good credit score however they have the required capital. (Which according to a quick Google search is between $120,000 to $460,000)

Where should I start? Any resources I can use to learn about the business? How much day to day involvement is required from the owners? Do they need to already own/lease the real estate before starting the application?

What’s the best way or method to pay yourself?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 07:13 PM PST

Small business owner since 2018. Staging and Design in the real estate world. I luckily have the corporate gig still going as my wife runs the ins and outs. 2021 is the year we finally pay ourselves. Economically... what is the best way to do that

    Anybody Own an Anytime Fitness?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 10:57 AM PST

Found a couple of these for sale, checked out the P&L's. Haven't seen 2020's numbers yet...I have no doubt they've taken a beating, but I think Covid has generally made people more fitness-aware, so as things return to the 'new normal' I would expect the numbers to head towards the pre-Covid numbers.

Anyhow, the initial numbers look good, showing a decent net profit as well as wages for the manager salaries, which I would absorb one of those as an owner/operator.

I'm just wondering if there are any other Anytime Fitness owners out there that have some feedback on the franchise and their experiences with them? When I look them up they seem okay, but I'd love to hear from someone who has worked directly with them on what to look out for, what's working, what isn't.

Thank you in advance everyone :)

    Subscriptions fatigue

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 09:02 AM PST

Nowadays people are faced with the fact that most applications have a subscription model. It's good for IT companies, because they can get your money forever. If 5-7 years ago you could pay for a product once, now you have to pay every month. I think it's really big problem, because a lot of people including me can lose money because they forgot to unsubscribe from an app they don't use. Or use trial period and lose money due to auto-renewal.

So, my friend and I want to solve this problem by creating subscription tracker app and subscription tracker chrome extension, but we're not sure we're not exaggerating the problem. So I create simple google form with poll for understand if the described problem really affects many people: https://forms.gle/ZfyczrNjnX6sGJVk8

    2 DBA's, One EIN?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 06:00 PM PST

Hello! Hoping to get some feedback..

I currently have a handmade business where I make baby goods. It is a sole prop and I have a DBA for it (Let's call it M&S). I have had it since 2016 and have an EIN for it which has my name and M&S on it.

I am in the process of starting a new business where I am buying children's clothing and reselling, but I am doing this online, so I will also be selling my M&S merchandise on the site as well. This new business' name is W&B. I want this to be a sole prop as well.

I was told this is technically the same business, since the merchandise is the same, some are just made by me and others are not..

My question is, can I have two DBA's and one EIN number? When I was researching, I see yes I can, but how would that work since my EIN has M&S listed on it? And when it comes tax time, can both names be listed on the Schedule C? I just want to make sure I am doing things right!

Thanks in advance for your help

    Live streamer wants to incorporate

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 05:02 PM PST

I am a live streamer, who earned roughly 8k per month average in 2020. I pay taxes as an independent contractor paying self employment taxes on schedule C. I would like to lessen my tax burden through incorporating.

    1. What would be the best set up for my situation? My research so far leads me to believe that incorporating as an LLC and then selecting to be taxed as an S corp would be the best way for our situation. I understand that it takes time for the articles of incorporation to be approved as well as selecting S corp. If I were to apply this month and get fully set up by say march, would all my income from 2020 fall under S corp or just income earned after march? What deadlines should I be aware of?
    2. What is a reasonable salary for someone in my situation as I could not find any information on my specific situation / industry? I am speaking in regards to the salary one must pay themselves when they have an S corp vs distribution. Could I get away with paying myself 10 - 20% and the rest in shareholder distributions? I anticipate this year to be even better than last year.
    3. What type of accountant would be best suited to set up an S corp? EA? CPA? What about saving money by doing it myself through legalzoom or other automated services?

Moving LLC from one state to another

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 06:38 PM PST

    Hi

I am in the process of moving my old LLC from NY to a new LLC in CT, basically discontinuing my old LLC and forming a new LLC in CT. I am already in contract with my clients with my old LLC name. Also, I have few bank accounts under my old LLC name.

    1. Do I need to make changes everywhere e.g. bank accounts, any contracts with clients/vendors?
    2. From a tax liability perspective, when I dissolve the old LLC, do I owe any taxes? How does this work.

    Buying NICE yard signs

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 05:19 PM PST

Looking for recommendations and please feel free to solicit if you own a place that makes these. I am looking for yard signs that are lower to the ground, large, and most importantly not a simple square or rectangle (more of a banner shape with some curves).

I have seen this type of sign out in a yard before but I am looking all over the internet and I cannot find anything similar. If you can overlook that I called the yard sign I seek 'curvy' then please drop a link or rec if you know any good places.

Sellers Permit or Consumers Use Tax

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 04:01 AM PST

Im doing my initial LLC filing for my business in Wisconsin and there's one part that has me a little stumped. It's under the permit section and asks to choose one of the following: Sellers Permit, Consumers Use Tax Certificate, Use Tax Certificate, Withholding Tax Number, or Motor Fuel Permit. I understand I dont need the last 3. So it comes down to either the Sellers Permit or the Consumers Use Tax Certificate.

My question is which one should I choose? Where my confusion is, is what exactly each means. The way I'm understanding it; is the sellers permit means I charge tax upfront and the consumers use tax Certificate means I don't have to charge tax upfront, but I'll have to pay it at the end of the year. If I'm looking at this wrong please let me know. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks

    PPP2 Question

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 04:41 PM PST

One of the requirements to apply for PPP2 is demonstrating a loss in sales from 2019 to 2020. Our business is new in 2020. Since we cannot calculate the requirement, we did not operate in 2019, are we still eligible to apply? My banker said ask the CPA, the CPA said ask the lender...

How do you fix night shift employees who are slacking off and causing trouble after I go home for the night?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 09:49 PM PST

I own a bar/grill and I'm having an increasingly hard time with my employees being lazy, unmotivated and irresponsible when I leave to go home for the night. When I'm at work everything runs smoothly, but I've gotten lots of complaints about service and professionalism of my wait staff at night. I'm wondering if anyone else has dealt with this and how they overcame it without cleaning house.

    Struggling with startup accounting

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 07:38 PM PST

Hey all, I'm starting a small machine shop in the next few months. Obviously it's been very challenging figuring out quality requirements, certifications, finance, shop space, etc. but so far that all has been going pretty smoothly. The one thing I'm truly struggling with is the financial projections that the bank is asking for in order to give me a loan. I have an associates in business but it's been close to a decade since I've done this kind of thing, and was never super strong in it. My particular concerns regarding projections are things like estimated taxes, and projected depreciation. I have Xero for accounting software, but I don't know if I can leverage it in this situation.

To add, I'm very much a hands-on, technician type by trade. Have you found a good resource for explaining how this works? I've googled, and read several articles, but I keep getting discouraged. Thanks in advance!

If I’m going to apply for PPP round 2, is it okay to start the forgiveness application for the first round of PPP? Should I wait for PPP 2 before I request forgiveness? Or does it not really matter?

Building a brand out of small business - Should I trademark the company or create a new brand?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 03:49 PM PST

    Hello community,

Context: We are a home decor manufacturing company with in-house production currently in B2B model of operations. We export our products to mainly Europe and NA. In last 2 years we have seen significant demand for consumers who would want to purchase directly from manufacturers like us due to it being considerably cheap for them (IMO, home decor products are unnecessarily expensive in retail). With this observation, we moved ahead with establishing a D2C model. We started selling direct last year - mainly on Amazon and have also built our own eCommerce website.

    Question:

    1) Should we go ahead and trademark our company and make it a brand? Because the profit we are getting in D2C is good we would want to continue selling online.

    2) Since we are primarily an export company our name might not be very suitable for a brand name.

For reference let's take an example - BigPie International

    3) Should we go ahead and get a trademark on the full name or we should just get it on the first name (BiePie)?

    Challenges with this part:

    a) our current domain consists of the international part (bigpieinternational.com) and we are selling there.

    b) BiePie currently is owned by someone else and they sell furniture in the US, not sure if it's trademarked. The issue with trademarking that name is that my customers might get confused and go to their website.

    4) If I trademark BigPie, can I still use BigPie International as my eCommerce website? Will I be able to add International to my logo? (I will be applying for wordmark only) From a branding and marketing point of view, would it be good if the brand is BigPie but the domain is BigPieInternational.com? Looking forward to your help. Thanks!

Clean Beauty Boutique ~ Inventory Cashflow Question

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 02:26 PM PST

Hello! I'm opening a clean beauty boutique in Birmingham, AL and currently getting my website updated on Shopify as well as my retail location confirmed. I have plenrty of cash set aside for start up costs, and I have experience working in a clean beauty boutique in another city, but I did not do their inventory purchases for them, instead I managed the floor and staff while also running sales. So the inventory purchasing side of things is new to me. I know the products I want to sell, but I'm curious about how the cashflow works for purchcasing inventory. Do you pay wholesale price prior to the products being sent to you, or is there some sort of delay (ex. 3 month delay) after you recieve inventory before you pay for it so you have time to sell the products and you're not paying out of pocket for tons of products before selling them. Does that make sense? Thank you all for your help!!

Is a personal loan the best way to start a small business with no revenue yet?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 06:06 PM PST

So a little background, I left my decent-paying job ($70k absolutely hated the schedule and nowhere to grow) to go to school for CNC machining because that's always been a big interest for me and I had a few connections for when I got out. Well, I started working at this new shop about a month ago and it turns out machining is not what I thought it was. I realize I don't want to work for someone else for the rest of my life, my friend and I have decided to start a small business out of my garage.

We plan to start selling metal "artwork" basically yard signs and stuff like that, and wood laser engraved signs as well. we live in a very sports-centered city (Buffalo) and we can make a good bit doing just those signs. I plan to also offer powder coating as well since that will have to be done to the signs anyway. We're trying to do as many processes in house as we can. I went to school for welding as well so the fabrication should not be a problem.

my neighbor builds racecars and has already expressed serious interest in having a plasma table and powder coating set up available right across the street. He has quite a big circle of autocross guys that would probably be interested too, so that should be a decent bit of income if everything works out.

My cousin owns an outdoor furniture store locally and he would be willing to sell the products we make at his storefront.

eventually, I would like to turn this into a full-on fab/powder-coating business.

So now onto the financing question.

My business partner and I have been looking into small business loans and all we can find are loans that require revenue. well, guess what we have none. And most likely won't have any until we get going.

I (24M) am selling my motorcycle collection worth about $10k to pay off the majority of my personal debt there will still be a small amount ($3K) and my student loans still($5K). I have a car payment ($11k left) but it's not in my name. my credit is about 700 I have a perfect payment history. I plan to keep my 40hr job the entire time while getting the business off the ground. I will be doing most of the production work.

My business partner carries very little debt (about $3k) and owns his own home ($260K just bought it a year and a half ago) he has no car payments and is getting a raise in March. He has a very stable job (ups tractor-trailer driver) and has very good credit. He will also be working full time. he will be handling the marketing/business side.

We were looking into getting a loan for about $20k and we are thinking about doing a personal loan that we both sign onto. we should be able to get a decent rate. But how would we go about using that personal loan to pay into the business to allow us to write expenses off, just open a business account and deposit the money?

Any and all advice/help is greatly appreciated thank you in advance.

What would you find useful from your chamber of commerce in 2021?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 09:48 PM PST

I recently joined the ambassador program for my local chamber of commerce. The chamber has had a slow 2020, like many businesses. Not many networking events and seminars, and the ones that were held via zoom had a low turn out. Many businesses didn't renew membership. When we try to recruit new businesses, the young business owners (age 40>) aren't interested because 'they can do what the chamber does themselves.'

Our strength is that the directors and president are well connected in our city. whatever you need done such as getting permits, advice on commercial property, applying for grants, hiring workforce, connecting with a mentor, the chamber can help. However, business owners are being entrepreneurial and feel like they can do all these themselves.

That being said, what good can come from a chamber of commerce in 2021?

I've tried a few things but have never really got any traction.

    Any recommendations?

If you are a non-software business, how would you go about finding a software company?

Revamping my business and expanding services Legalities

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 06:41 AM PST

Hello, I started a small bookkeeping business last February, got my DBA, business license, and all that... My question is if I am expanding the services I offer, and therefore want to change the name I call myself to something very similar, but MORE, would I need to file for a new DBA in my state?

For example, if I called myself muffinsandbutter Bookkeeping before and now I want to call myself muffinsandbutter Bookkeeping and Business Solutions, would I need to file again? In the description for my original paperwork I said "bookkeeping and other business services" so I'm wondering if that's sufficient or not. I'm leaning toward needing to file again, but I'd love to spend less if possible and actually make some money in 2021.
