Home insurance carrier is dropping us and no one wants to insure us (crosspost from r/homeowners)

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 12:53 PM PST

State Farm is dropping us after 2 claims since we purchased the house in March 2017 for $575k (recently appraised at $645k). First claim was in May 2018 with a $9,200 payout and second in December 2019 with a $19,500 payout. Both due to water damage from pipe leaks. Coverage had 1% deductible so I've already paid over $10k out of pocket for both losses. Unfortunately, we also live in a high brushfire hazard area, so with a combination of 2 claims within 5 years and wildfire issue, I've gone through a dozen insurance carriers that have declined coverage except for Farmers. And, I'm guessing this is because the online system didn't ask me about my prior claims.

Farmers is willing to cover us for the following for $218/mo ($2,620/yr):
Deductible: $22k (all peril); $22k (water)
    Dwelling $441k
    Personal property: $176k
    Personal liability: $300k
    Medical payments to others: $5k

I'm trying to compare other quotes, but no one wants to even provide quotes. Most of the quotes or their attempts have been through online and they result in direct rejections. Even the few local agents I spoke with cannot find anything for me. What do I do?

Health Insurance - are you covered for pre-existing conditions you didn't know about, or somethng that ends up being related to a declared pre-existing condition?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 02:29 AM PST

Firstly to give some context, I am in the UK and I have had health insurance for just over a year, which I have not yet used.

My question is, if you have health insurance and get treated for something that you did not know or ever saw a doctor about but it turns out existed longer than the insurance, does this count as pre-exisiting?

Or if it turns out to be related to a pre-existing condition is this still covered? And what if the cause cannot be established?

In my case, I would like to see someone about a potential sleep disorder. I have never seen a doctor about this but I have had the symptoms for as long as I can remember (always put it down to bad habits/depression), but my worries are:

    - I am diagnosed with a sleep disorder, but I have had it (and the symptoms) for longer than the insurance and so it counts as pre-existing even if I was unaware that I had an actual disorder.

    - I am not diagnosed with a sleep disorder, and they say that my problems are down to depression (or anxiety) which in my case is pre-existing and I do have treatment for (with the NHS).

With depression/anxiety this is mild/moderate and I self referred. I have never officially been diagnosed with either, but had 3 lots of therapy with the NHS and I believe my scores on those questionnaires always showed mild/moderate levels, its just they don't say "yes you are depressed".

I also feel with mental health conditions, a doctor could speculate that this is the reason for an issue, but actually there is no real way to find out.

    - My final worry is if they say no sleep disorder, its not depression, you're just not a great sleeper - does the lack of diagnosis mean you aren't covered?

One important thing to add - as I say I have had symptoms for years and put it down to poor habits/depression. Over the last few years, I have really worked hard on these habits (sleep routine, exercise, diet), plus had therapy, and so now I can view these symptoms differently and see that actually maybe there is something wrong, which was impossible to establish before.

I know I should speak with my insurance, I'm worried they will make a note on my file or something! So wanted to speak with people who have a knowledge of this to get a sense.

    Car Insurance

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 01:34 AM PST

Hi guys, first time poster here. I'm having a bit of trouble with my insurance here in South Africa.

In 2018, I was in a minor car accident that was not my fault. Insurance covered the cost to repair my car and I paid the excess. Because the accident wasn't my fault, insurance said they'd get my excess back from the person whose fault it was.

It's been 2.5 years and we still haven't received the excess back. I phoned the guy who drove into me and he is now saying that he's not actually the owner of the car, and that the owner is out of the country. He's becoming a bit shady.

Is there any advice on what to do? My insurance doesn't seem to be applying any pressure to get my excess back.

Apartment owner, building is responsible for leak

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 04:27 PM PST

Hey guys, my sister is an apartment owner and there was a leak. In conclusion its the apartment complex's fault and the property manager is paying to fix the plumbing issue. But they didn't mention anything about the damaged wall and ripped up carpet. Is the apartment complex also responsible for the damages? She does have home owners insurance and since the leak is the buildings fault they will not be covering anything, otherwise they would've covered everything. Thanks in advance for your help.

How to convince my girlfriend to buy insurance

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 08:33 AM PST

Hello a bit of background here,

So my girlfriend is extremely argumentative and very hard headed, we've been arguing about this whole "insurance" thing for the past 2 years now. Shes an actuarial science student (year 2) at the moment, and she has been brought up by her parents to not buy insurance as they think "insurance" is a scam. Her family's belief is to save up a chunk of money in case of emergencies instead of subscribing for insurance. (Medical insurance) and basically all types of insurance in general but mainly the healthcare dept.

Me on the other hand has been brought up to always buy insurance as they are important in case of emergencies.

Guys i need rock solid ass points to "convince" her to get insurance as she has gone as far to say that she wont want to get insurance if we ever have kids.

Florida Homeowners’ - What Can I do?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 10:15 PM PST

I'm curious about what things I can do on our end to help keep our insurance costs low. We bought in 2016 (first home). It's a 1973, not in a flood zone, masonry construction (no cast iron pipes). Roof was completely replaced just before we bought it in 2016. No claims from us ever. Wind mitigation is about as high as we can get aside from shutters (which we're looking into). Pool, no "dangerous" animals. Aside from shutters, and having the highest deductible we're comfortable with for both AOP and Hurricane...anything else we should plan for to keep premiums down? Crime in the area is fairly low too. We have a fire hydrant super close (I think it's 100' or something?). Electric panel is new, water heater is new as well. We're at about $1900/yr (around 1350 sq feet).

I'm Trying to Help My Brother Get The Health Insurance That'll Best Suit His Situation, But I Know Little About Getting Health Insurance

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 10:01 PM PST

    Hello! I am in:

    Orlando, Orange County, Florida

My brother (34) broke his leg last year. He lost his job, subsequently lost his job connected insurance policy, and now his foot is super bad. No one wants to work on him because of his lack of insurance, so he wants me and my mother to find a company for him. Thing is, I have no clue what I'm doing and I'm afraid of being scammed or tricked because I'll be so naiive.

So here's what I do know:

    1. There's an enrollment period for health insurance, and he missed it
    2. Since he missed it, he can qualify for "temporary" insurance (?)

That's it. So I went on this website (ehealthinsurance), and they pulled up 5 temporary health insurances.

    My questions are:

    1. What are some other safe and reputable websites that I go on that has a list of insurance companies that I can use?
    2. What would be the best insurance to get if he just wants care for his leg, but no long term commitment yet.
    3. Is it true that he can only get temporary insurance anyway?
    4. Where can I find out what the different policies cover, so I could pick the best one for the situation?
    5. Similar to above, is it possible to learn what insurance policies the doctors take so that way I don't go choosing one that's not even accepted? He has to go to a specific doctor for now anyway, so would it be appropriate to ask what insurances he takes?

Thank you for reading! Sorry if it sounds silly.

    Edit: I forgot my location

Cannot get through to Kaiser Member Services

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 05:41 PM PST

I have employer-provided insurance through Kaiser that started on Jan 1. As a new hire, I only selected this in mid December. However, I still have not received a member number/ID from Kaiser. I called my employer's benefits to ask if they could help and they are unable to aside from confirming that KP is the insurance I selected. I've been on hold for too many hours to count (I'm not exaggerating) and I keep getting mysteriously 'hung up on' after hours on hold. I need my health coverage within the next 2 days for an important prescription and I don't know what to do at this point. I bet I could be on hold all day and still wouldn't get through.

Two neighbors share a backyard hockey rink. Who is responsible for breaking our window (hypothetically).

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 12:35 PM PST

My 2 neighbors to the right of me decided to share a hockey rink between their yards. They both have pie shaped backyards so their rink is positioned to be a major hazard to my house and the house on the other side of them. They attempted to put up a net and gave up. Now it's only a matter of time before they break one of our windows (these are large windows too).

At times it sounds like gun shots when the puck it's the rink. I can't tell you how many times we have their seen kids on our camera walking to the other side of our yard to fetch a puck. These aren't the type of neighbors that you can just talk to without it turning to passive aggressive conflicts.

So how does that work? Do they both become responsible for damage. Do they both pay a deductible?

Question about leaving parents health insurance before 26

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 04:42 PM PST

I am 24 years old. I have been on Kaiser insurance for my whole life from my father. I've been on a certain medication for 3 years under them. I have a specialist who has all my levels and dosage etc. and I would prefer to stay under Kaiser with the same doctor.

My dad is moving and will be switching off of Kaiser to blue cross/blue shield. He has offered to keep me on his health insurance when he switches. However, I am worried about losing my medical history with Kaiser and therefore having to start the journey towards getting my medication over again. I initially had to find a doctor who could refer me to my specialist, to have blood tests done, to prescribing the medicine... the first time it took 4-6 months and I would prefer not to stay off my medication for that long. It is not life threatening but very important to my well being.

I would prefer to get my own health insurance through my job and start paying for my own. My job offers Kaiser. But the problem is it's outside of open season and I am uncertain if willingly switching off parents insurance before 26 is considered a qualifying life event.

So I am lost and don't know what to do. If anyone has any advice or experience with this please let me know.

Edit; I am in northern Virginia region

Totalled car, Minor Injuries - Miscellaneous Questions!

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 06:46 PM PST

Hi, I have some general questions, some more important than others I was hoping I could get some help with.

Long story short: Tesla totalled, at fault party rear ended me, admitted to falling asleep behind the wheel. Went to ER, minor, RXs for muscle relaxers etc. Missed 2 weeks of work since I have to use my arms a lot and stand most of the day. I went through my insurance directly.

    1) Everyone says get a lawyer ASAP. well ive called 4 or 5 of them. 2 of them were upfront with me and told me that unless I have latent pain in 3 weeks or so, not to use an Attorney and to do it myself as the 33% fee would to take a lot of what monies I would recover. The rest of them seemed happy to take me on. Should I retain a lawyer, or try to settle first, then propose the counteroffer to Lawyer?

    2) I have medical insurance which I used to go to ER. As far as I know I owe $100 but they didnt bill me. However, ive been reading that if theres a settlement, I am legally obligated to pay my insurance the ACTUAL cost of the ER visit etc out of the settlement? Why the hell is this a thing? Why do I pay for insurance every paycheck if I have to pay them back for Medical costs I incurred?

    3) I have roughly calculated that my 2 weeks of work + Rental car fees/Uber expenses + medical bills (Actual non insurance pricing) is worth about $6-7K. But I have no idea how to calculate my actual pain and suffering. 2 weeks of being sore didnt feel great not to mention being on muscle relaxers making me feel absolutely useless. Then theres the additional anxiety of driving now thanks to the accident. I was reading what I'm sure is outdated info regarding a formula you can use involving a multiplier.. but it looks like dog crap to me 😅

    4) Is there anything im missing? FYI accident happened dec 11th, finally claim determined total loss, still waiting to hear back from adjuster. No call from at faults insurance yet, which ive been told NOT to pick up.

    Thanks everyone!

Should I Get Insurance Through A Job I Plan on Leaving in 3 Months

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 02:59 PM PST

Forgive me, for some reason I know nothing about insurance. I'm 23 and currently on my parents insurance plan, which they get through my moms work. My mom may be getting a new job and I would not be able to be on their insurance anymore.

Unbeknownst to my parents I plan on moving to a new city in April. I doubt my current job will let me transition to remote work so I'll be getting a new job as well.

If I get insurance through my current employer for only a couple of months will that negatively affect me? Will it in some way hinder getting insurance through my next employer?

Progressives premium gone up with new car

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 02:07 PM PST

I've been with progressive through AAA in Oregon for over 5 years and recently changed the car on my policy (from a '99 to an '01, so not much newer of a car) and the rate went up from $53/mo to $95/mo. Same exact coverage, liability only. There's also a $50 cancellation charge if I decide to cancel that policy and go with someone else. I have a very clean driving record, but not the best credit, not the worst, just not the best, though it has improved some since the shut down (paid off some cards). I'm sick of being screwed over by insurance like this, especially at a time like this. Any tips on where to go to next? AAA agent is acting like his hands are completely tied and there is nothing better out there and this is pretty standard.

Was vague with my insurance, nervous it looks like I lied

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 05:38 PM PST

I was in a car accident 3 weeks ago, and I got a copy of the accident report today.

It reads: "While attempting to back into a parking spot Christians rear bumper struck the front bumper of bkbunny87s car, minor damage to both bumpers"

I'm concerned this is going to look at odds with the information I gave my car insurance.

The other driver was backing up to be able to turn into a parking spot as he had partially passed it. So he WAS backing up in the process of parking, but he wasn't backing INTO the spot at the time of the crash (that I could tell). He hit me straight on and not at an angle, and actually was able to pull into the parking spot immediately following the accident. He wasn't lined up at all to be directly backing into it directly, so isn't what I told my insurance.

I think the cop wrote this because we both said he was backing up, and Christian added it was so he could get into that spot.

The good news is this police report does shows that he reversed into me. I've been really anxious about being found at fault since the damage would appear as my front bumper and his back.

My question now is about what I told my own insurance. I read it was best to stay vague/only answer what they directly ask, so that's what I tried to do when they recorded me.

The fact that it was in a parking lot or that he was aiming to park did not even come up to my insurance. I just said he went by where he intended to turn, reversed to get to it and hit me.

He did miss his turn (the parking spot) and reversed to get to it, but I feel like it's going to look very strange when they get the police report and see it reported he hit me while attempting to back into a spot when I didn't think to mention this. I don't want to look like I wasn't being honest— I was!

I also very much want them to put weight behind this police report since it literally says he hit me backing up. I'm kicking myself for not thinking it was important to mention him parking. The fact that he told myself and the cop he was backing up so he could park actually shows him more at fault, since the person parking typically has the burden of making sure it's safe to do so.

Will this make me look bad? What's a good way to offer clarification without looking like I lied? Am I totally over thinking it and should just leave it alone unless they seek clarification since the police report tells the story?

Before getting the police report I had already taken a picture of where it happened and added text to create a rough map of the accident for my insurance (nothing like this was on the accident report). Would just uploading this like I'd already planned be a good way to get the details in or it is more beneficial at this point to just leave things as they stand?

Picture of the accident with the text describing what happened. PS— Want to shout out that I purchased a dash cam after subbing here. Thank you for the advice, I am really pleased to know in the future I will have video evidence in situations like this.

EDIT: I am in New Hampshire

    Totaled car

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 05:35 PM PST

Hi everyone, this is all in Ohio. The accident happened in Canfield, the repair shop is in Grove city and I live in Columbus.

Very inexperienced and young car owner here. This is my very first car ever and I've only had it for a year.

Last week, my car was parked in a driveway when a family member backed into it. I have insurance with Progressive but I bought it through the website "gabi". She was taking full responsibility for this accident and having her insurance cover everything so I didn't file a claim with my insurance. Now I'm not sure if this was the right thing to do.

The car was towed to a shop but the estimator only ever contacted me once. He called and said he would show me the car and explain the damage- but when I showed up, the receptionist asked me to sign paperwork and said "the estimator wasn't ready for me" and to come back when he called me again.

    He never did.

This morning, a random man from Liberty Mutual (not my estimator) called and told me the car was a total loss and that I need to get my personal stuff out of it tomorrow. Neither myself or my MIL is associated with liberty mutual, I'm confused why this man called instead.

I'm not sure what to do here and I don't want to go into the shop tomorrow blindly and confused. What should I expect? Now that the car is a total loss, will my insurance penalize me for not filing a claim in the first place? What happens to my title? What happens to my car? I thought I still had the option to keep the car if I wanted to try and repair it.

I'm completely lost and no one is answering my calls and I don't even know what to google to help myself out.

Thanks in advance. Any advice or information would be really helpful

I was in a car accident and unsure what my odds are of this ending in my favor or not

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 01:13 PM PST

I was in a car accident on 12/30 in Arizona. I was turning right on a green light and collided with another car that was turning left. I will be honest and say I'm still not completely sure what happened, which I expressed to the police officer taking the report after the matter and to my insurance.

It is very likely that either of us could've made a wide turn, however, I am convinced it was the other party that did so, due to the layout of the road.

Unfortunately, the reporting officer (a motorcycle cop) gave me a citation for a wide turn, based on the passenger's statement (the driver's significant other). When I was questioning why I received one (she should've yielded to my turn) and the other party did not and expressing my frustration, the officer even admitted it could've been the other party doing a wide turn as well.

Anyway, I am guessing from an insurance perspective, it is not looking well that I received the citation and the other party did not. Just wanted to know if the videos I took of the intersection and of my car will help validate my side at all (that she very well could've wide turned into me), and what steps I should do next and what to expect.

    Thank you!

Does increasing or adding life coverage restart the contestability period for insurance?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 04:56 PM PST

I am not trying to do anything fraudulent.

But I trust insurance companies very little, and this is for life insurance, where by definition I won't be around to fight with them in case it is needed.

I've had a policy for maybe 10 years and I enjoy the peace-of-mind that there is no chance for them to contest anything on the application.

But every six months when they send the bill (that is auto-paid) they urge me to increase coverage and I think I should but I always wonder if that would restart the clock.

They are also trying to selling me AD&D insurance pretty cheaply. Would getting that restart any contestability period on my main insurance?

    NC if the state matters.

World Nomad travel insurance Covid testing question

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 03:56 PM PST

I'm new to reddit so apologies if this is in the wrong place or already been asked.

I'm currently in Ethiopia and will travel through Turkey on my way back to the states. When I bought my insurance and flight ticket there were no Covid testing requirements in Turkey. Now, even for transit passengers, you need a negative PCR test to get on your plane. World Nomads/Trip Mate is saying this isn't covered because it's routine care - I would have to have Covid in order to receive any medical care related to it. How is it routine if it's being forced on me in order to fly back?

I'm trying to figure out how this makes sense. Without this test, I am stranded abroad. Is there some loophole anyone knows about? Of course, I can file and then appeal, but I need something to appeal with.

Surely a medically required test in order to return home has to fall under some part of the insurance, otherwise what's the point??

Edit: I'm from Oregon in the USA and I have the Explorer Plan with World Nomads/Trip Mate.

Should I advise a friend to call her auto insurance company

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 03:42 PM PST

[Florida]Hi all, a friend of mine caused an accident a few days ago that probably will result in 2 totaled vehicles

She says she does not remember everything that happened and what police told her at the scene, but the officer called a tow truck who took her vehicle to their parking lot

They did not provide the other party's information and it seems no ambulance was called.

She called the agency who sold her policy and they advised not to call her insurance company,to wait for the other party to file a claim.

    1. Is she taking an unnecessary liability by not informing her own insurance of the accident?

    2. Since she's paying a daily fee to keep the vehicle at the lot, we are trying to decide what to do with her vehicle, should we tow it to her house or a local garage? Maybe save on that and sell it to the junk already?

Any other tips is appreciated, thank you
