Rear Ended, car totaled. Insurance won't cover personal goods lost

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 03:44 AM PST

I was rear ended by a texting, speeding driver last week and the trunk of my car (Honda civic) was completely destroyed. I had about $1000 worth of gear in my trunk- mountaineering and climbing gear. I live in MA which is a no fault state, and my insurance company is telling me they won't accept my personal goods to be included in my claim, that I would have to go through the other person's insurance company for that (and they may decide to not cover them as well). Is this typical or is it something I can argue?

Should I care that my electrician isn’t insured?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 12:26 PM PST

There's an electrician I would like to work with because he is extremely knowledgeable, has 45 years of experience and I trust him implicitly. He is licensed but he has no insurance for his business (he is mostly retired and does minimal work).

Worst case, let's say I hire him and damage occurs due to his handiwork. Could my carrier reject a claim on my HO policy (on the grounds of negligence, for example) for not choosing an insured electrician? To me, whether he chooses to have (edit) liability insurance is his risk, as long as I'm hiring a licensed professional and getting the right permits. But I know how difficult it is to file a claim and I don't want to make any decisions that could adversely impact my coverage.

    Edit: this is in Illinois

    UK: Phone insurance, Sealed item {assault}

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 02:53 AM PST

My Mate had a terrible experience selling his sealed unopened Samsung phone on the Facebook marketplace. He was robbed and hospitalised, and those cruel people got away with the phone. He was selling it because he no longer wanted it and sadly the 28 day return window closed.

He still has the proof of purchase, he has an incident report with the police of the assault. Is there an insurance company that covers a claim such as his. He obviously never used the item so cannot provide a "proof of usage" which most insurance companies require. Where does that put him? Please I want to give him good news

    Question about a coverage investigation

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 07:04 PM PST

Hey guys, long time lurker first time poster. My wife was in a traffic collision with another vehicle. The driver broadsided our vehicle and was clearly at fault(he was pulling out of a private driveway onto a public street). The driver was unlicensed, had a warrant (traffic related) for his arrest. He was driving a family members vehicle and from what I understand is not an authorized user of this vehicle. He has no vehicle himself and no insurance in his name. The Police came out and he admitted to fault to them on body cam and to me. I filed an insurance claim with my insurance company and also with his. Long story short I had to take my car to the shop and pay my deductible. It is currently still being repaired. I also had to rent a vehicle on with my own money. Depending on how long my car is in the shop all of this combined could cost me thousands. I have full coverage insurance, with uninsured motorists through a large reputable agency. When I talked to the other parties insurance company they said they are under going a "coverage investigation" and there is no guarantee they will accept fault even though the car was insured due to the guy not being an "authorized user". This whole process seems crazy to me. My wife is driving down the road minding her own business, had the right of way and some dude with no license slams into her. I was planning on just waiting for this guys insurance to fix they car, but they said they can't get a hold of him and it could be weeks. Our car is now non- drive able. Why am I having to pay now thousands of dollars out of my pocket up front for this dudes mistake? According to his insurance there is no guarantee they are going to accept fault even though there is a policy for the vehicle which hit ours. I am thinking about filing a claim with the department of insurance or hiring an attorney. Any thoughts. Thanks!

Will my parents be contacted if I have an accident on my insurance that I pay for?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 09:52 PM PST

Earlier tonight my car fishtailed around a corner and hit a parked 2015 hyundai, my car is a 90 camry if it makes any differance.

My car has no damage as my rear bumber hit his front bumper at around 5 km/hr if that, but his has a crack in the bumper so we gotta go through ICBC (british columbias auto insurance broker).

While I do make payments monthly on my insurance my dads card is listed as the secondary payment if my account has insufficient funds.

My question is would ICBC contact my parents for any reason? (I am 17 driving with an N)

    Self-Employed Insurance

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 09:06 PM PST

I was wondering if there were any self-employed people with private insurance for pretty much everything and if they could ballpark their annual cost for everything (auto, home, health, life). I am young and still on parents' plan but quickly overwhelmed at the cost of insurance for the self-employed. I can't rely on getting married anytime soon so I need to budget these costs into my business plan. Maybe some tips on what to buy and what not. Thank you in advance for any help.

Can someone define what a "capitalized underwriting vehicle" is?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 05:07 PM PST

I don't work in the insurance industry, trying to understand what this means, from a paper I'm reading. I know what underwriting is, I know what capitalization is... but if I try to Google "underwriting vehicle" I get, well, underwriting for vehicle insurance. Lol. Help.

    Umbrella insurance/ underinsured motorist

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 05:02 PM PST

My insurance agent recommended that I add an extra $200/year to my umbrella insurance policy and add coverage that if I get hit by an underinsured motorist I have the additional coverage needed if I or my family get injured and cannot work?

    Good idea?

If the loan for the car is in one name, can the insurance be under another name?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 04:28 PM PST

I'm 19 and looking to get a used car to last me through college and hopefully beyond. My dad is going to be helping me out a bit with the cost, however he'd prefer to not have his name on the loan because he wants to build a house and wants his credit to look as good as possible. If I was the primary applicant of the loan, with my grandfather who has fantastic credit as the co-applicant of the loan, could I then put the cars title in my name and my dads name and add it onto my dads existing insurance plan which I am already a driver on? Is there another sub that could help if this is the wrong place to post this? Thank you!

We fit these antique doors as French doors in our house. But now I think we've made a mistake! What kind of trouble insurance wise will we get into if we leave them? Based in UK, had a bit of a nightmare builder experience so please be kind!

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 06:57 AM PST

As said above! We recently fit antique doors from 1900 in our 1880s house. Our builder said it was totally fine to fit them, but now considering some of the poor quality work he has done on the rest of our job, I'm not completely convinced it's okay to leave them in. I'm also now aware that they do not fit building regulations for French doors...

We live in the UK and any advice you have would be so good! I love the doors but obviously would rather not leave them in for very long if somehow they void our building insurance!

Pain and Inconvenience Settlement Patelar Tendon Rupture

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 06:51 PM PST

I'm in the process of settling an insurance claim in Ohio with the other parties insurance adjuster and received my intial offer. I'm navigating this without a lawyer and feel their offer is low. The other driver was at fault which resulted in my Patelar Tendon Rupturing which required surgery and physical rehab. I'm 8 months recovered and gained most my functionality back however feel I am still not 100% and feel I'll be forever slightly impaired. Most my mobility is back but I cant kneel on that knee without pain, my knee is a different size than the other, certain movements are still awkward, I cant bend it as far (although I'm close) as my good knee without pain/resistance, strength is weakened, I have a nasty scar, etc.

I'm 32 years and feel like this injury will be something that inhibits my life forever. Excercise, Sports, activities, etc will never be the same. Even stretching is difficult when you are unable to use your knees as supports. Recovery is expected to last 6 to 12 months and 8 months in and feel my recovery has plateaued. I was offered $16,000 for pain and inconvenience. They have a $100k policy. Adding up missed wages, medical bills, and pain/inconvenience they are offereing to pay out ~$40k in their initial offer.

Is $16,000 reasonable for the injury i've sustained? Should I hire a lawyer to finish the settlement?

I do plan on calling and finding out the details of how they came to the amount of $16k and going from there.

I've left detail out for the sake of keeping this short but I suffered a painful injury that required surgery and rehabilitation due to the negligence of another driver. This required the cooperation of my family and friends to help care for myself and my dependents while I was recovering. I am not sure I will ever be the same after the injury and while my inabilities dont appear to be detrimental its something I am forced to live with. I do not know the long term consequences of this injury or if I'll have complications down the road. I feel my knee will be more susceptible to future injuries. I could go on but not sure it would add anything.

Please, anyone, if you have any advice share.

Car totalled, Insurance with no vehicle

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 01:58 PM PST

Car was rear-ended and was totalled. I am thinking to rent a car for about two months. seek advice on insurance implications.

    1. Do I need to notify my insurance to remove the car from my policy? My claim is with another driver's insurance. If so, there would be no vehicle on my policy. Will my insurance still valid?
    2. I would like to rent a car for two months before getting the next vehicle. Do I need to list my rental car under my insurance? I have a credit card which has primary insurance for rental, I will use my own insurance for secondary
    3. so for two months, Can I lease one car? will it be cheaper?

Thanks in advance. I am in MA

Help Needed: Military TriCare + Federal Government Insurance + Open Enrollment Expired

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 05:38 PM PST

Urgent Help Needed... This is going to be long, apologies in advance, but I'll try to be as thorough as possible.

My husband is in the Army National Guard. He's always had TriCare insurance through them because it's decent and cheap.

In January 2019, he started working for the Army Corp of Engineers (Federal Employee - civilian.) He did not enroll in healthcare coverage when he started working for the Corps of Engineers, assuming he was still covered under TriCare, because it's substantially cheaper than the federal insurance.

Fast forward to April 2020, he was put on Active Duty orders due to COVID. He was active duty from April - November 22nd, 2020. Since he was active duty Army, he was eligible for free TriCare insurance through the military for that duration. He called TriCare to pause his payments on the insurance he was paying for and to let them know he was currently active duty. The TriCare representative let him know that since he was a Federal employee, he was not eligible for TriCare, unless on Active Duty orders, and he had not been covered since January 2019. Apparently, Federal employees are the ONLY people not eligible for TriCare. He had not been paying for TriCare, but did not realize it stopped being deducted from his Military pay stubs. He was covered under TriCare "active duty insurance" from April 2020 - November 22nd, 2020.

Once he returned to work, he was planning on enrolling in Federal insurance since getting off Active Duty is a "qualifying life event" and can be outside the open enrollment window. He did not realize he only had 60 days to enroll (he thought it was 90.) Now he is 7 days past that 60 day "life event" deadline and open enrollment does not begin again until November 2021.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get insurance until he's eligible to open enroll again? It looks like healthcare.gov is past open enrollment. We would also not qualify for Medicare or any low income insurance. I am fully insured through my work (single coverage currently) and it's past the enrollment date for me to add him as well. He's 28 and very healthy, but I'd rather he not go without insurance in case something catastrophic happens.

TL;DR - Husband missed open enrollment/60 day qualifying life event window for Federal government health insurance after getting off active duty military orders.

    Suggestions welcome!

What to expect filling a claim for a fence?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 04:48 PM PST

A storm with strong winds knocked out two of my fences last night. I was considering filling a claim with our homeowners insurance but we've never done that and don't know what to expect. Also, my wife is concerned that our rates will increase of we file a claim. Is that a real concern?

    Edit: I'm in Sacramento, CA.

    What is considered a breezeway?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 03:28 PM PST

So I have a home that has a detached garage that is getting absolutely killed with flood insurance because of its location ($5k per year just for the garage).....if I attach it with a "breezeway" it can be considered "attached" and the insurance cost would plummet. Essentially, I would like to do the bare minimum to "attach" it (not permanently), so that the flood insurance will decrease. The garage isn't even worth more than $10,000 so you can see where my dilemma lies. The flood insurance is required by the loan company. Anyone had any similar experiences or any knowledge on this type of thing? Thanks in advance.

Switching Career Paths within Insurance (Liability -> Appraisals) in California

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 03:21 PM PST

Hello, changing job titles within the auto insurance industry is something that I have wanted to do in the past, but because of the lack of education and exposure to the field, I went straight into liability claims adjusting. Because I like to work on my own vehicles as a hobby, I am able to speak to my INSDs/CLMTs directly on specific car parts (if the person whom I am speaking with knows what I am referring to as well) and have some sort of idea what damages to one specific part of the car has an affect on other moving parts too. Because of my background knowledge, it has got me thinking about diving into auto damage appraisals.

Those who are in the auto damages appraisal field, estimate writing side, or material damage specialists (MDS), what is your take on switching from liability claims handling to auto damage appraising? Is it as hands on as commercials and the society's vision of what an auto appraiser makes it out to be, someone who gets hands on with cars with measurements, researching car parts, finding ACV and calculating, and speaking directly with SOC/DRPs? Additionally, would working as an independent appraiser work better or worse than to enter as a staff appraiser?

    Home Insurance and Independent Agents

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 03:01 PM PST

    Edit: I'm in Virginia, USA.

Hi, all. I'm a first time home buyer who obviously had to get homeowners insurance to cover the house. I decided to go with Progressive Home since I have my auto through them and could bundle. I've started my policy now and I did all this online with no agent (apparently Progressive doesn't have captive agents). Now I'd like to work with a local independent agent who can help me understand the details of my policy and possibly talk with the company about riders and extra coverage. From what I understand, independent agents get paid a comission when you buy insurance through them. Since I already have a policy, will no agent want to work with me? Sorry if this sounds dumb. This is my first time having to deal with anything like this and, well, you don't know what you don't know.

My question is if I boy out of pocket and don't file a claim but report this to my insurance company, will it damage my record and increase my premium going forward?

Insurance Required to Sell CBD Products in California?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 09:37 AM PST

Hello, I am a university student doing research for a project. I was wondering if someone wanted to open a CBD store in Napa, California, USA, selling things like gummies and candles with only CBD, NO THC, what Insurance would be required and how much would it cost. It would be a fairly small business, probably only selling $150-350k of products per year. Im having trouble finding rates online as many companies don't give out rates and you need to get a quote, however I have been unable to get a quote as this is a school project not an actual business.

    Thanks
