Fired a customer today, and it felt awesome

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 01:52 PM PST

We canceled an order today and told the customer that we will not be filling any of his future orders. He has sued one competitor for "emotional distress" and abused the chargeback system to get free product from another competitor. Also had some shenanigans with us.

I will admit that I got some person satisfaction out of it, but really feel that it's what's best for the business as well.

Do you think about jumping ship?

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 04:07 AM PST

Do you ever second guess why you choose to own a business?

We own a software/staffing company. A year ago it was just us 3 owners and a couple contractors. Now we're at 16 employees and 15 contractors and still growing.

I'm finding being split in so many directions and being the only one that pays attention to compliance/operational/HR/bills is causing me massive stress. It's totally out of my wheelhouse and my business partners give zero *ucks so I've been figuring it out.

Frankly, I'm not sure owning a business is as rewarding as getting to work for someone and make an impact using my actual skillset.

It would be one thing if the financial rewards were there, but frankly I'm working insane hours and making about the same or less than I was before.

Anyone been there? If so what did you do?

[HELP] I have a small IT consultancy and get turned down unless personally recommended because I am a single person providing complex services. How should I present myself to overcome this prejudice?

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 03:58 AM PST

Hi all, I am looking for help with communication. I am rubbish at this and will need to hire someone but first I want to understand where exactly is the problem. I am not sure if it actually has a solution or if it makes more sense to just close down.

These are the main services I provide (taken from the company paperwork)

    IT consulting services, typically:

    - information security consulting (web application security, server security, penetration testing, load testing)

    - designing software architectures for APIs, API interfaces, web services and applications

    - designing information architectures for websites and mobile apps

    - statistical processing of organic traffic data, looking for anomalies to leverage

I have been in the business for over 6 years now and I have never gotten a single new lead. All business I get can be traced to a single event years ago when someone randomly gave me a chance, I delivered "surprisingly good work, especially for a freelancer", that person recommended me to their business contacts, then they recommended me and so on. All of the business I ever got came from personal recommendation.

But when I am talking to someone who did now find me through a personal recommendation, once they find out that it's just me, they stop taking me seriously. My business is VAT registered and I understand that a lot of businesses need to get longer deadlines for invoices because everything runs on trade credit.

I thought that was normal, but I got interesting feedback yesterday from a manager at a large corporation. This is not salt btw, I am glad I finally got real honest feedback. He said that nobody expects long invoice deadlines from some little girl like me, and that my problem is that the services I provide are demanded from "real companies". If someone like me offers these "big boy" things like longer payment deadlines, it comes off as desperate (as in, I will be sacrificing my meals just to get the contract, because it is impossible that someone like me has the resources).

So I am obviously a woman in IT, self thought, coming from less than nothing at the very bottom of social hierarchy which means that in terms of resources, I always have a backup of a backup of a backup of a backup of a backup. I don't look particularly intelligent. Always relied on letting my work speak for itself.

I have been working on income streams that don't involve clients, but these things take time and can be seasonal. One 2016 project just started turning some small profit last year.

Is there a way I can brand myself / my company to overcome this negative bias?

    ADVICE NEEDED: Fundbox Denied PPP

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 03:57 AM PST

I applied for a relatively small loan as a Sole Proprietor with employees and was denied with no explanation as to why. The email encouraged me to apply again and had a section entitled "some reasons why you may not have been approved which mainly detailed upload proper documentation.

I want to apply again but the documentation is what it is and I'm not sure what to change as for as what upload. Does anyone have any experience calling them to speak with them?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 12:13 PM PST

During round one of PPP, I sent in my application and within an hour I was approved and had the funds within 2 days. This time, I applied exactly a week ago and haven't heard a word since. Been checking into the dashboard and it still says they're reviewing my application. I expected more as a returning customer. Anyone else having problems?

Picking up office space in the age of covid

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 03:17 AM PST

So I'm based in London, where we have a full national lockdown. Nobody's going to work unless it's essential, and a lot of office-based businesses are not anticipating getting staff back into the office any time soon – perhaps not in 2021.

I have a small company and have been looking to pick up a 3 desk office for a while (well, for 6 months before covid, and then the year that's passed). As we start to roll out vaccines here, I can see a path to getting back to office work by early summer and so I'd like to pick up some office space.

But when I look on the flexi-hire sites like Hubble, it feels like the rates haven't shifted since I was looking in the months pre-covid. I understand that if you own an office block you've had a terrible year, but surely rents should've plummeted?

I would be grateful for anyone who has tips on picking up small office space in the current climate. I think the best route might be for me to try and sublet or pick up the end of a lease from a company that doesn't need the space anymore, and presumably there are bargains to be had. But where can I find them? And how can I avoid paying the London premium rates for office space in a time when it'll always be a touch uncertain whether we'll all be home working again at the flick of a switch?

I am curious about other people's experiences :) I'll be happy to share our own experience in a month or so if anyone is interested. So far everyone has been very nice and enthusiastic which is always a plus.

How to get my business off the ground

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 12:41 AM PST

So I know what I want my business to be, I want to make leather good (specifically in the bdsm world for now) I've been doing leather workering for a few years now. The problem is when I start moving towards trying to make it into a business I get overwhelmed with the business side of things. Does anyone have advice on how to make the business side more manageable. Or how to organize it all or so it doesn't seem so chectic?

Merchant Services: Is 1% + $0.25 per debit transaction fee and 3.5% fee (paid by client) for $16 a month a good deal?

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 12:22 AM PST

Was thinking of using quick books for payment services as it was recommended by friends.

A bank that I am considering opening an account with referred me to a company that offers these rates.

If we utilize this service, the maintenance fee on our business checking account is waived.

It comes with a free Bluetooth card reader and they also provide payments via website.

Are these competitive fee rates per transaction?

    Is $16 a month reasonable.

We plan to do 30 (15 actual jobs) or so transactions a month ranging from $200-$1,000 dollars.

Service based so we will be collecting a deposit and then a remaining payment. So 2 payments will be collected from each client.

Payments will most likely be in person.

    Edit: no contract

    Selling business

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 08:20 PM PST

I have an interested buyer in my business. He owns an existing business and wants to use my business to expand his. I'm wondering if anyone knows how I should determine how much I should be willing to sell for. I know it's up to me what I should sell out for, but I'd like to hear from people who have done this before and what kinds of deals they got.

    StartupConvo - Startup Discovery

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 11:50 PM PST

    Hello There,

Quick Intro: I am Nav, I am 14 years, and I am the Creator of StartupConvo. I'm from Australia.

StartuConvo is a Startup Discovery Platform, it allows users to list their startups and gain likes, StartupConvo offers a built-in leaderboard that ranks the top startups of all time(and some honourable mentions). StartupConvo uses a custom made unbiassed algorithm, giving every single startup ever listed on this platform a fair chance to compete with other relatively bigger startups.

    Website: https://startupconvo.com

    GitHub: https://github.com/StartupConvo

    Back Story:

A Few months ago I was looking for websites to get my startup discovered. Every website I would go to had at least one of the following issues: Too slow, Too Expensive, Horrible UI, Horrible Sign-in, Rigged Algorithm. I would find myself confussed on how I should go about releasing the startup. I was struggling with marketing at this point. 2 Months Later, I have built a Startup Discovery Platform, Tackling every single issue I faced in my previous experiences. I have a good looking UI, I have a stable API, It is Free to Use(No Subscriptions), We do not collect any of your personal information.

I consider this startup one of my biggest milestones, any Teenagers today are wasting their time on Social Media, whereas I gave up all social media platforms and spent my entire holidays in my bedroom coding this one my own.

Thanks for spending your precious time reading this,

    Thanks,

    Nav :)

Huge Canadian company asking for net 30 terms from my US small business. How do I check credit?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 09:16 AM PST

A giant public company (Fortune Global 500) wants to buy something that we make. They've already sampled and purchased a sample order via wire ~$1,000. They now want to place an $20k order on net 30 terms now. Is the process of checking credit different for a Canadian company than it would be for a US company?

Startup w/ 50-50 Partnership, should I talk with the partner to get more?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 07:00 PM PST

Hey r/smallbusiness, I very recently joined Reddit, although I've used it to gauge people's opinions/perspectives on things. I feel, however, that this is a problem that may make me feel better by conveying it specifically to get a good sample size.

So as the title suggests, to start, I am the co-founder of a medical biotech startup holding 50% of the equity (not by contract or anything, at least not yet). We, as a company, really just got started doing our thing, mostly because 2020 was a huge drag and we were trying to set everything up in that time. Our plan to start was that we would each have 50% to start, and would have pretty distinct roles: my partner (who has been a friend since grade school) would handle the finances and finance-adjacent matters as the effective CFO of the business, whereas I (a recent university graduate) would basically be CEO/CTO, handle the conceptualization of the medical treatments we would produce (basically, I'm the one that thinks the stuff up), head the research for each product, and bring in the R&D manpower to make it. So far, he has put in more monetary support into the business (in the thousands of dollars; again, we really just started getting it going) as he started work not too long after we graduated high school, and I didn't do much at the start due to my uni studies, so I normally chalked it up to that and didn't think much of it. After graduating, however, I've spoken to some people and received their opinions that I should have majority share of the company because of my role, concluding that since all of our treatment concepts are my brainchildren, and I will be the one heading the research towards materializing them, that I will be not only be providing more to the business overall, but that I stand more to lose if those research targets are lost (I stand to lose the concept and its growth from my conception of it, while he loses only the money that he has put in so far). So with that in mind, I wanted to throw what was on my mind out there to see if there is good logic to that line of reasoning, because it does check out for me (and if anyone has opinions on what they think the change in equity should be, if applicable, I'd like to hear it too). I have no issues bringing it up to him if it comes down to it, but a big part of me does feel kinda shortchanged overall, given what our plans are.

TL;DR: I'm in a 50-50 partnership for a startup where my partner deals/will deal with the finances of the company, while I deal with the concepts of and R&D of all of the products for the company. I feel I may be getting squeezed in comparison to what my contribution is and will be for the company.

    Any thoughts welcome, thanks.

**Edited for clarity on my and my partner's roles.

    How to catch the fraud!

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 04:04 PM PST

    Hey everyone

I started at a small business as the controller and in the last couple of months the more and more I suspect that 2 employees are embezzling. One is the Ops manager and the other is the license holder for our industry.

Basically I have been trying to implement internal controls and it has been a fight with these two. The two items they won't budge on are any controls around payroll and purchasing. RED FLAGS

Lately our material costs and payroll have been running high lately. My hunch is that they have ordering parts, sending our labor to do the job, collecting the checks and depositing into their own bank account. They have been allocating all these expenses to jobs that have the margin. I have checked the clock ins of our guys and we have GPS and they have been clocking in for these jobs and never going around the address.

One of these individuals is a 5% owner so they could open an account under our business name. My first question is, is there a way I can run a report to see if there are bank account under our federal EIN?

The majority owner wants to catch them in the act... how would you do it? I can only think of following some of guys and seeing if they are legit jobs they are working at

Popping my entrepreneurship cherry.. and it's scary

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 08:25 PM PST

I worked at a software startup as an engineer. My boss found out about my company and I wanted to pivot out of software engineering. We had a talk about me pivoting to sales one day. The next day, the conversation felt more like your business or mine. So I've been doing this business full time for a week or so. I've been absolutely busting my ass and grinding. I've cleared $500 in my first week and a half. I've opened an online fly fishing company that is predominantly service based (my specialty) with a mystery fly box. I don't want to plug the company if it's not allowed. But $0 days are scary.

Do you guys ever just feel scared shitless when making these pivots? Any advice for a first timer? I've read over 50 business books when I was in the Military, but reading these books and actually living what they write about is terrifying but absolutely bad ass at the same time. I feel like I'm living a dream, just need to get these rookie sales numbers up for ease of mind.
