Employer taking away health care coverage 1 day prior to child birth due to paternity leave. Posted: 06 Jan 2021 08:17 PM PST My partner recently gave birth to our new child. My partner went on paternity leave. Part of being put on paternity leave is that an Agreement has to be signed for welfare benefits and to pay for health care. We were notified that my partner's employer sent a cancellation notice 5 days after our child's birth to our health insurance provider to cancel health insurance. They asked to cancel the health insurance 1 day prior to my partner giving birth. My partner contacted HR about the issue, and HR basically stated "You checked this option in the agreement that will cancel your insurance" and basically nothing further can be done. We pointed out, that what was checked states " I elect to cancel the following benefits. Coverage will terminate effective with the last pay date in which I receive a paycheck from...(company)." Our interpretation of this part of the agreement is that it means the coverage should end on the pay date, the day she was paid. The pay date was 4 days after the child birth, not 1 day before. The agreement does clearly state "Coverage will terminate effective with the last pay date in which I receive a paycheck..." There is no date stated here beyond the "Coverage will terminate effective with the last pay date..." The child birth was on the 13. The last pay date and the date my partner was paid was the 17th. On the 18th The company sent a cancellation notice and back dated it to 1 day prior to the child birth, the 12th. My partner has not resigned or quit. My partner is on leave, but still employed with the company. We live in the USA. We are still working with the company to come up with a resolution. However, we are terrified because child births are not cheap... Not to mention the current state of the economy. We have already reached out to a lawyer and will have a consultation soon. I just want to see if anyone can provide any advice, or let me know if we have any grounds. Part of me just really wants to get this off my chest because it's killing me inside. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Jan 2021 07:11 PM PST Long story short I'm looking at a 2016 Subaru Forester, around 19k. Everything looked fine until my statefarm agent noted that there was an accident in 2018 (which I was aware of) and that the claim totaled 26k. Of this claim, $358 was for collision (CO), 15k for personal injury protection (PI), and 11k for uninsured motorist (UN). Obviously the PI coverage was not put toward the car, and the collision was. But what about this last 11k? The dealers were nice enough to use a paint depth meter to show me which panels were repainted (just the side and back, it was a rear end fender bender, "minimum" damage on carfax), and even removed some weathering strips to show that all of the welds on these panels were still factory, meaning that they were not replaced or repaired in an auto shop or anything. I want to make sure that I'm not financing a 19k car with 11k in repairs done.. that's obviously not a great look to the insurance company. Is there a way I can confirm if this uninsured motorist coverage was actually towards the car? "Uninsured motorist bodily injury covers medical bills related to a crash, while uninsured motorist property damage pays for damage to your car" Note, there is also a bodily injury coverage (BI) of $0 on this claim. Any help would be much appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Jan 2021 03:55 AM PST Hello all. Yesterday I was involved in an accident and the other driver has admitted responsibility. As such I currently have both my insurance company and the other insurance company offering to perform the repairs, provide me with a temporary car etc. Seems good. Is there any advantage/disadvantage to going with either choice? Why would I choose one over the other? I've been told that since the accident is being reported anyway that it'll be marked against me and potentially affect my premiums (which is unfair, but that's another discussion). How does employer provided health insurance work for a remote employee? Posted: 06 Jan 2021 07:25 PM PST With more and more companies hiring people remotely due to COVID and tech advances (my employer has hired three people in the past month who live across the country and have no plans to move back, even after COVID), how does the employer provided health plans work? Do health insurance plans have nation wide networks? Just as an example: If I got hired and work for a company in Seattle but live in New York and I went to get a primary care provider or needed to have surgery, wouldn't the health plan auto decline it since it's out of network? (Due to the company being based in Seattle)? Or is that not how it works? I'm asking because I have a planned surgery coming up in 6 months or so, but am likely being offered a job across the country that would need be to start within 1.5 months. This surgery is medically necessary and I have been talking to my surgeon about it for 2 years, so I can't switch surgeons at this point. I'm wondering if I take the new job, get on the new job's healthcare plan, and if there's a possibility of this / my surgeon still being in network, even if it's across the country. Thanks for the help! [link] [comments] |
Coverage for Preemptive Rescue Flight Posted: 07 Jan 2021 02:47 AM PST Feel free to make fun of me for this, I am fully aware of my own mistakes. As a background, I'm a student living in Switzerland, affiliated with a US university. I receive a stipend and US-based health insurance as part of my contract. I have no other personal insurances. I was recently hiking in the mountains with a friend and we essentially stranded ourselves in a dangerous situation near the peak. It was too icy and steep for us to descend in time before sunset. Out of concern for our safety, we called for a rescue helicopter to bring us down the mountain. Now I am stuck with a ~3,300 CHF (3,700 USD) bill for the rescue service. I tried contacting my insurance to explain the situation but they said it would likely not be covered because I was not in a medical emergency. However, I was in a dangerous situation (completely of my own doing) and there were EMTs present within the helicopter to check for injuries. I know I am grasping here, but is there any way this could be considered a rescue flight for which my insurance would cover a portion? I know this is a peculiar situation, but does anyone have any precedent? The frustrating thing is, my friend has a Swiss accident insurance so she will likely be completely covered. The rescue agency was not okay with solely billing my friend, even though I called the helicopter primarily out of concern for her safety. Anyways, even if nothing can be done about this, let this be a lesson to others to know your own ability when hiking in dangerous conditions. I should also say I am glad I called the helicopter, even with such a large bill I am happy we are both safe and without injury. [link] [comments] |
GF's parked car was crashed into by drunk driver - Geico not being helpful Posted: 06 Jan 2021 12:24 PM PST Hi everyone, I am posting here in hopes of getting some guidance on how to proceed in a situation that transpired on New Years. A drunk driver lost control coming down the road my girlfriend and I live on and ended up smashing into 5 parked cars, totaling a few of them (one of which belonged to my girlfriend). We only just found out about this yesterday as we went to get into her car and saw it completely shattered and smashed - luckily a nice neighbor put a note on the car explaining what happened and even gave us the police report number, since their car was affected too. My girlfriend called her insurance provider (Geico) to report the incident, but the representative on the line said that because the insurance is in her mother's name, she cannot help her. Her mother does not speak English and was not involved in the accident. The representative told her to contact the police and have the police go after the drunk driver's insurance... We have never dealt with anything like this before and are unsure of how to proceed. I feel like the insurance company should be being more helpful - can anyone help advise on how we can tackle this situation? Thank you!! tl;dr - GF's parked car was totaled by a drunk driver. Insurance won't talk to my GF because the insurance is in her mom's name, but her mom doesn't speak English. Insurance said to handle it with the police. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Jan 2021 06:18 PM PST Recently became a landlord, contacted my homeowner's insurance agency to switch from homeowners to landlord coverage. He said it's capped at the mortgage balance and covers just what I owe, and is paid to the mortgage holder. I also asked about an umbrella policy, and he said I have to switch all our vehicles and other insurance to his agency, too, to have an "umbrella." Is this usual? Am I not using the right terminology or not asking the right questions? What do I do about securing the actual value of the property, or at least my equity, which is more than double the mortgage balance? And insure against liability from my tenants? [link] [comments] |
Question about Pet Insurance Policy Terms Posted: 06 Jan 2021 04:58 PM PST TLDR; My pet insurance is trying to deny me coverage for my dogs behavioral medications, but I think the way they've written their policy means they can't. Hi guys, wanted to get some opinions on my disagreement with my pet insurance company. For backstory - my dog developed severe generalized anxiety for which she is on 3 different medications, all of which are quite expensive. We got pet insurance immediately when she was a puppy so I wasn't worried about the cost. Her medications were being reimbursed fine until my last claim a week ago which was reimbursed at $0.62. They claimed that my plan had a separate $1,000 annual limit for Behavioral Disorders which we had hit. Now to be fair, up until this point I did not read every line of the insurance policy as I foolishly assumed that all the coverages and limits would be listed on my account online under the tab that says "View Full Protection". It's a shitty/misleading thing to do to not list certain policy limits in the section of your account that is supposed to outline your full policy protection, but stuff like that is to be expected from insurance companies. However, when I did go through the policy and read the terms they were referring to, I'm convinced that the way they underwrote the policy means that they don't have a legal basis to deny my claim and the medication should be covered. Here's the relevant section of the policy: POLICY COVERAGE
We will reimburse you for: a. the reasonable cost(s) of any medically necessary treatment administered by a veterinarian within Canada or the United States that your pet has received during the policy period for a covered illness or injury; b. the medically necessary reasonable cost of pharmaceuticals that can only be obtained by means of a veterinarian prescription to treat an illness, injury or behavioural disorder in the quantity of ninety (90) days or less; c. the medically necessary reasonable cost of supplements. The most we will pay for this coverage is the maximum annual policy coverage shown on your declarations page. (My maximum annual policy coverage is $10,000)
The following coverages do not increase the maximum annual policy coverage on your declarations page and are not subject to and not considered in applying co-pay when co-pay conditions otherwise apply. The special coverages are not subject to the applicable deductible. (This implies that these special coverages are separate from the main policy... the person I was speaking with even used the term 'Extra Policy Benefits') a) BEHAVIOURAL FEES AND TELEHEALTH We will reimburse you for:
(The way this term is written, it refers only to the veterinary consultations to diagnose and treat behavioral disorders. They tried to claim it included all physical treatments for said disorders as well)
Other categories in the SPECIAL COVERAGES & LIMITS section include: b) ADVERTISING AND REWARD c) BOARDING FEES d) LOSS DUE TO THEFT OR STRAYING e) DEATH FROM INJURY OR ILLNESS f) VACATION CANCELLATION (None of these coverages are listed anywhere in the initial VETERINARY FEES, PRESCRIBED DRUGS AND SUPPLEMENTS section, as they are considered separate 'Extra Policy Benefits'. If prescription pharmaceuticals for behavioral disorders were meant to be an extra policy benefit/special coverage as well, then it shouldn't have been listed in the first section either. But it is listed as part of the first section's coverage, and isn't referred to in the SPECIAL COVERAGES AND LIMITS section) The only thing they kept saying to me was that "I'm incorrectly interpreting how the terms and conditions are meant to be applied". However, how they meant the policy to be interpreted is irrelevant and not my fault - I'm taking the literal interpretation of exactly what they wrote in the policy I agreed to. I don't think any policyholder would or should be expected to identify how the provider meant for the policy to be interpreted, vs. what they actually wrote. Is my reasoning correct in this? Posted: 07 Jan 2021 01:21 AM PST Hey there, just a little backstory, I'm 23 and have my own car under my own name and my father took me to get the same insurance as him because he's had it for a long time, so they know he's my father. The insurance is under me completely and he has nothing to do with him and a couple of months ago I took insurance off because I wasn't going to be driving it much and I could share a car with my mother. My mothers car was having problems and so my father called my insurance and got them to resume the insurance on my car since it works very well, the insurance company never contacted me about this request and just complied because they knew he was my father. (I don't blame my father at all I just think them not contacting me about it is messed up) a month and a half later (this week) I'm canceling my insurance with them for a much cheaper option and they are telling me to pay a bunch of fees for canceling mid term and I'm just wondering if I can leverage anything or if there is anything I can do to avoid these fees. I'm new to all this and don't really have the haggle and talk your way out of every fine and fee trait so I'm sorry if this is a dumb question. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
I hit my neighbors car with mine and I wasn’t even driving. Posted: 06 Jan 2021 05:45 PM PST I had just gotten home from work today and i forgot to put the hand break up, I really needed to pee. My car rolled backwards down my driveway and hit my neighbors truck on the side. No one was either in his truck nor my car. Obviously it was my fault. I have full coverage insurance. I already called and made a claim. I feel like a fucking idiot. Anyways, is there any specific way I should go about this? Or is there a way to keep my insurance rate from increasing? Please help [link] [comments] |
Police report and insurance claim are different stories Posted: 07 Jan 2021 12:35 AM PST Police report and insurance claim stories are different A few days ago, I was in a car accident with 2 other vehicles. I had told the insurance company and police that I was squeezed in between 2 cars and that had been settled. Today I received a call from the deputy at the scene and he had told me the other driver had told a different story and he would adjust mine according to his. Is this bad? Will the insurance company be asking questions? I was written as No-Fault in the accident report and the stories of the police report is different than what my instance companies thinks happened. If the explanations differ, could I soon be facing a problem? Please help me! [link] [comments] |

Waiving health insurance question Posted: 06 Jan 2021 10:51 PM PST I thought I waived my medical insurance during open enrollment last month but I think I hit "save" and not "confirm" without realizing it and I was sent my medical insurance cards today. Is it possible to still waive my medical insurance from my employer? I'm in California (not sure if that makes a difference). [link] [comments] |
PIP claim denied by both companies out of state passenger Posted: 06 Jan 2021 09:17 PM PST I came to visit my mother in Kansas from Florida for the holidays (Thanksgiving and Christmas) and was riding in her truck when she rear ended a vehicle causing injuries to myself, my mom and the other party a few days before Christmas. We went to the ER to get checked out and I racked up a bill of $4,870 for musculoskeletal pain and whiplash. They gave me a shot of muscle relaxer and a prescription for muscle relaxers as well. I started treatment with a chiropractor a few days after the accident before being denied by either company and when the chiropractor called the KS company, they said they are not handling my claim. After giving a statement to her insurance company the next day, they instructed me to file with my own insurance company in Florida, which denied me since I was not driving and the insured car was not involved. My moms company said they would cover me if mine denied me so when I got the denial letter, I emailed it over and got a call from the insurance adjuster saying that my FL company still has to cover me just filing with the state of KS for PIP. Kansas is a no fault state and so is Florida. Her full coverage insurance has high premiums with $25k in PIP and $500k in bodily injury. I'm in ongoing pain that is worsening and wanting to see another doctor for pain management and hopefully more muscle relaxers but I don't know who to bill it to so I've been putting off treatment. The chiropractor was used in a previous accident three years ago so they are working with me while I get this sorted out between the two companies. The company in KS is saying that since my car was parked at my moms house they will not cover me but I do have a bodily injury claim through them. The added stress of being denied by both companies while a passenger in this accident is giving me major anxiety and making my already tense muscles tighter. My company in FL is wanting to know when I will be back in the state but since I've been injured here, I'm not wanting to drive 23+ hours alone to go back. I was originally planning on returning to Florida a few days after Christmas but no solid date since I've been unemployed this year due to Covid. I'm at the point that I'm considering moving back here because I have the belongings that I need and a friend (roommate) who can keep the rest of my stuff until I am not in pain and can retrieve it. As a result of the accident I'm wanting to stay to help my mom out the best that I can (around the pain that I'm in). What do I do as an injured passenger that is being denied Personal Injury Protection by both insurance companies in an accident that happened in a different state not in my vehicle? I already have over $5,000 in medical bills due to this accident. This is a cropped version of both denial letters: https://imgur.com/gallery/7rrefHs [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Jan 2021 01:12 PM PST Here's the situation. I got into a car accident and my car is about to be repossessed. I only have enough for the deductible and I do have full coverage insurance. What should I do? [link] [comments] |
Adjuster only wants to take 70% liability after their driver ran a stop sign i do not agree Posted: 06 Jan 2021 12:12 PM PST Thus is in IOWA The reason they are claiming on 70% is that the impact with my front number occurred with their rear passenger tire of a Dodge Truck. I did not have a dash cam, but I did immediately get out of my car and snap a video of where my car stopped, and took pictures of the the damage. While the other driver was talking to the police that came, I recorded them Admitting to not having seen the stop sign and that they just blew through it. I had sent all this to my insurance thinking they would do a good job trying to fight it, but it seems my adjuster just went on vacation after confirming they received it. This morning I called the insurance company of the driver that ran the stop sign, the adjuster did not pick up, I got another person and was able to send the images, recording and a link to a youtube video of the aftermath of the accident. I made sure to include my insurance adjuster and theirs in the email. What can I do? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 06 Jan 2021 11:22 AM PST Hi all, first off - I am software developer with little experience in the insurance industry. Recently I have begun working for a small jewelers block firm - the underwriting software that they are using is written in Excel/VBA and is unfortunately kind of a mess, slow and difficult to navigate( was written by a developer years ago) My question is - is there an industry standard when it comes to underwriting software? Basically we have multiple rating sheets (if the branch has more than one location) and we use the info on there to generate a quote. I guess I'm not sure what a professional version of this type of software is supposed to look like and I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction. Thanks! Note - I am in NJ. do I need service line coverage in my home insurance plan? Posted: 06 Jan 2021 02:20 PM PST my broker is recommending adding service line coverage for my house. I personally don't think I need it. the insurer is hippo. the house was built in 2003 and is in the south. I haven't had any issues with the lines outside my property. it's about a $300 difference across a year should I get it? heres the excerpt from hippo: Hippo's home insurance policies cover the costs of repairing any damage to a sewer, water or electric line connecting your property to the street. This kind of protection usually requires the purchase of an extra endorsement on your typical policy. [link] [comments] |

Planned surgery coming up, but possibly switching jobs / insurance Posted: 06 Jan 2021 08:10 AM PST Hi! So I've been planning this upcoming surgery for about 2 years now (jaw surgery). I have it preapproved / prior authorized with my current insurer, so I'm planning to only pay the out of pocket maximum for this year after the surgery. The surgery will be happening within 6 months or so. However, I (haven't yet, but likely will be) offered a very nice job across the country. They'd let me stay where I am (not move) until COVID is over and until I'd feel comfortable moving. I'm currently living in Minnesota, and the new job is in Texas. This brings up my question. If I took that job, I'd lose my current insurance since it's through my employer. That means I'd have to pick up the insurance on the new employer's plan. So then, my surgeon that I've been working with for 2 years will be out of network (I'd assume). Along with that, I'm not sure how long I'd have to work at the new place before they'd offer me insurance. Does anyone know if there's a better option? Or at least I'd like to hear you opinions. This is a medically necessary surgery so I can't push it off too much. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Got a full-time job, stayed on mom's Marketplace health insurance, bracing for taxes Posted: 06 Jan 2021 09:53 AM PST Hello Redditors, I appreciate your feedback here if you know how I should approach this. I am 24 and have been on my mom's Florida Blue health insurance all year. In early March, I secured a full-time job to make $41k and (stupidly) opted not to take the health insurance offered by my company because I was not aware of premium tax credits/subsidies/etc. Because of this, I am aware that I will need to pay back some of the tax credits, I am just unsure of what forms I need for my taxes, if I should be filing as an independent/dependent, and just how much I might need to pay back. I hope this is the right subreddit, so please let me know if I should be submitting anywhere else. Thank you again! [link] [comments] |
Can I sell car shortly after an accident if I'm not seeking repair/claim from insurance? Posted: 06 Jan 2021 01:31 PM PST I was backing out of my grandpa's driveway in very snowy conditions after having him look at my car because it was blowing cold (which contributed to my accident, but I'll own the accident). As I was backing out, my left/driver mirror caught the back right panel of his 2019/2020 Ford and dented it, leaving a black skid mark. Now- he's claiming liability against me, I know I'm at fault obviously, it's all good. My question is - I'm moving soon and was planning on selling my car. I'm not repairing the mirror- it's controls were still attached/it works and I just superglued the mirror body. All good, just ugly if you look closely. I haven't had the chance to call my insurance to ask. This claim will be me against as a person, right? Will it show up on my car's record? Because I'm not repairing the vehicle, I don't want to take the time to get it looked at. This wasn't exactly a car accident so I'm unsure about the record on the vehicle. Can I sell my car before the claim is settled? Is it illegal for me to sell my car before the claim is settled? Should I be disclosing to potential buyers that this happened? Thanks. Posted: 06 Jan 2021 12:41 PM PST Hello reddit users! I got in a car accident that wasn't my fault in November and both the other party's insurance company and my insurance company determined that I was not at fault based on the police report made. There were two witnesses that saw her fail to stop at the stop sign which resulted in a total loss of my car. However, her insurance company told me that she is still "contesting" or not accepting liability and has been talking to the police about the matter. Since the accident she has not been cooperating by not picking up calls from her insurance which caused a delay in the process and a delay in being able to get a rental covered through her insurance. I'm probably just being paranoid or watch too much movies but should I be worried about her still not accepting liability and "talking" to the police? Like what could she have possibly been talking about with the police when her insurance company already told her what's on the police report? What if she's plotting something against me lol? I just don't want this to become a bigger problem. [link] [comments] |
