My Dog bit a kid who wouldn't leave him alone. They want him to be put down.

My Dog is a German Shepard has never bit anyone. He isn't stupid or aggressive but, he doesn't like being pet on by random strangers unless I've given consent. He wont bite but, he will shy away but, if you kept on trying to pet him he would likely bite. I mean would you like to have strangers come up and start touching you? No way.

I was at the park and this group of kids kept coming over and trying to pet him. I told them no twice. My dog was already uncomfortable and clearly did not like it. We finally pulled away. I had to pee so I tied him up to the post near the door. He's a good boy so I know he wouldn't bark or run off. Next thing I know I hear a scream.

The kid got bit. After I told him 3x do not touch my dog he goes and tries to pet him. The kid isnt bleeding much just a small nip. My dog is freaked out and cowering. An adult comes by and calls animal control citing "The dog is aggressive and dangerous and viciously attacked a child".

AC come by and so do the Parents. AC take my dog away for testing for rabies; and the Mom is angry. The kid says he went to pet my dog and the dog lunged at him and tried taking his hand off. I know that's a lie because, my dog is well trained and has never bit anyone or shown signs of aggression. Dogs dont just randomly go crazy. He does like being pet and I told that kid he doesn't so dont pet him. The Mom is sobbing and saying she wants my "vicious" dog put to sleep because, he's a danger to everyone around him. She ignored everything I said regarding me warning the kid not too pet him.

I'm just frazzled right now. My dog is currently being detained and I dont know if he'll be coming back. All he did was nip a kid who wouldnt take no for an answer. What is my next step? I want to act fast before she takes legal action and to protect my dog.

Wife has asked me to leave. We have 4 children. How do I protect myself legally?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 06:57 AM PST

    (Massachusetts, USA)

    Married 17 years, 4 kids.

Wife "isn't in love with me anymore." Has been asking me to leave since August. We did some couples counseling. She still has not changed her mind. She wants me out for Jan 1. We have 4 kids, ages 2, 12, 14, and 16. We own a house together which is solely in my name. Just $95k left on the mortgage.

She has not worked since 2005. I paid off her student loans, and have supported her and the kids myself since '05.

It appears the marriage is over and there is no way to reconcile. I don't want to leave, but she is not wavering—she wants me out.

How do I protect myself legally? Can I be accused of "abandonment" if I leave as asked? Thanks.

I will be consulting a lawyer, but posting here first to get the gist of thos sort of thing, as I have absolutely no experience at all with what's happening to me.

A man is threatening to sue me unless i pay him back for a meal, because the meal didn't result in sex. Is this legal? Florida usa.

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 09:34 AM PST

A neighbor asked if i wanted to join him for a lunch. I joined him with the understanding we were going as friends and were covering our own bills. I asked for my check and he already took care of it when i was in the bathroom earlier. I thanked him and went home.

He started getting very needy, desperate and clingy so i politely said i wasn't able to provide him with the friendship he was demanding from me and distanced myself.

I had to block numerous numbers on phone, whatsapp, messenger, social media etc due to his relentless calls/ messages. They'd range from begging me to give him a chance, to offering very inappropriate/expensive gifts, to calling me names. Hundreds of messages a day.

Yesterday he sent me a message saying that he will sue me and report me to the police for theft if i don't pay him 106 dollars for the meal since it didn't result in sex. Or i can unblock him and be his friend with benefits and i don't have to pay him unless i end the friendship/stop having sex.

He contacted my employer and my landlord saying that i stole money from him and begged them to relay messages

Can he actually sue and be successful? I don't mind paying since i was planning on paying for it anyways. But would this actually hold up in court? I didn't know he paid the bill to have sex, it wasn't an option presented to me. I would have refused to accept if that was the case. If i pay him what's stopping him from saying i owe him for something else? Should i wait until i get a letter from a lawyer?

I contacted police about the harassment and they won't do anything since asking for money isn't illegal. They said to ignore him completely and only communicate via lawyer. If he shows up at my door and won't leave again they can arrest him. do i really need a lawyer for this?

    ***EDIT

he's sent another email and changed his story to "you said you'd grab the next lunch and didn't go to lunch with me again, so you owe me for the lunch unless you unblock me and be my friend. It was a verbal contract" yes, i did say id grab the next one. But his behavior was becoming stalkery and concerning and i decided for safety reasons to end the friendship. I think he realized that sending me a message demanding sex probably wasn't very intelligent. Im not responding to any messages.

Power company claimed we stole electricity from them, and charged us an investigation fee and lockbox. When I called they said "the judgement was final, and the ticket was closed."

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 04:27 PM PST

Just like the title says, my wife and I purchased a new home a couple of months ago. We took possession of the house on September 18th at 5:00pm after closing at 4:00pm. When we arrived at the house, the electricity was on. We thought nothing of this as our previous house was the same way. We called to have the power switched into our name, they said they would send someone out on the 22nd to turn everything on. In hindsight I now realize they believed the power was off. I don't know what I thought, maybe the terminology or checking the meter to see what to charge the previous owners and to charge us. I don't know, never dealt with this before. Anyway, we received our first bill, nothing out of the ordinary, we set up auto pay and moved on. Fast forward to November 1st, our bill shows an investigation charge and a lockbox charge. My wife calls the power company and the person on the phone says "when the technician arrived on the 22nd he found that the power was already on illegally." She didn't have much more information for my wife, but gave my number to the investigation department for a call and explanation. After a week with no call, I call today. The person on the line says that we are being charged for the power being on illegally, and for tampering with the power box. (We obviously did neither of these acts) I asked for proof that it was ever turned off. They said they had notes from the technician but that was all. It basically boiled down to. "The power was on illegally, you are the homeowner, therefore you are responsible for the charges." I asked what time the power was turned off. They said 10:15am, I then said "we took possession of the home at 5:00pm and the power was on. I have my realtor and others as witness to this. After more time arguing, they called the investigation department who told them "The ticket is closed, and they have been billed. At this point there is nothing we can do." The investigation department never notified us of this "investigation" we found out when our bill came back and had the extra charges. The previous owners said they don't remember the power being turned off that day. (they were there cleaning before close). What can I do at this point. I filed an "informal claim" with the Utilities Commission of Ohio, but I don't have a lot of faith in them as they are there to "verify procedure was followed during the investigation." This all occurred in Dayton, Ohio.

My doctor told my parents that I am being tested for STIs.

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 12:32 PM PST

A little bit of context, I (M17) went to the ER a couple of days ago, and the doctor asked me if I had sex in private. He said they were to keep that confidential, so I didn't have to worry. The doctor was very nice and understanding, so I told him and he told me that I may or may not be suffering from an STI. He ran tests that again, were confidential, and I am still waiting on the results.

He told me I needed to make a doctor's appointment because my insurance required it, and today that I came for my appointment, the doctor here was very rude but I didn't mind, I just wanted to get it over with. As I was leaving though, she openly told my parents that I was being tested for STIs. Is this allowed? I am really stressed from the news that I may be diagnosed positive and now this, I have no idea what to do. Sorry if this is nothing illegal, I'm just wondering.

[MD] Randomly assigned roommate is a violent felon on house arrest, how to get her out?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 07:57 AM PST

I live in a short term lease that is currently shaping up to be the worst decision I've ever made. My roommates were assigned by the landlord (individual lease). The one girl is fine and the original 3rd girl wasn't horrible, although she got evicted. The new 3rd girl is a nightmare. We noticed when she first moved in that she had one of those house arrest ankle bracelets on, which prompted me to look into her criminal history.

She is a convicted felon with DECADES of violent criminal history. Second degree assault, prostitution, general theft, armed robbery, you name it.

I'm not sure how house arrest works in Maryland, but I cannot live with this person. I need them gone immediately. We never approved this person. I and the other roommate do not feel safe. I am in the process of moving out, which means now I am going to have more stuff she can steal. My other roommate is physically afraid of her as she has threatened her a few times

How can I get her out of the house as soon as possible? My lease ends in a month which is too long to live with this liability.

(New York) Facing discipline/potential termination for drinking off-the-clock

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 02:46 AM PST

    Hey everyone,

This just happened, and I'm already in panic mode. I work a late second-shift job in the news industry with my hours being from 4 p.m. until 1 a.m. My job largely revolves around reporting on breaking news and emergencies, so crime, fires, motor vehicle accidents, etc.

About 15 minutes ago, one of the head editors (my boss's boss's boss), who is also off the clock (we don't staff anyone from when I clock out at 1 until about 8 a.m.) called me. Thinking that was really strange, I made the mistake of picking up. He told me there's an apparently really bad fire going on right now, and since it's about five minutes from where I live, and they know I'm usually up very late, they wanted me to go out to it and report on it for overtime. I was honest with him and said I can't, as I've been drinking. He told me that's unacceptable to be drunk at 5:30 a.m. and to immediately report to his office when I get in today for a meeting with HR. I could understand the reasoning if I worked a 9 to 5, but my shift had only ended 4.5 hours prior. It'd be like scolding someone working a 9 to 5 for being tipsy at 9:30 p.m.

I am 100% sure there is no stipulation in our contract that pertains to drinking off the clock. I don't have a copy of it with me for the exact wording, but the most pertinent thing is a line saying that if we see news happening, even when off the clock, we're expected to either relay it to an editor or check it out ourselves. We're also paid hourly, not salaried, if it matters.

Any advice whatsoever about what I could bring up, or what to expect, would be fantastic. I've been struggling with serious anxiety throughout the pandemic, and this feels like it pushed me over the edge knowing I'm going to have to deal with this in 10 hours.

Thanks in advance for any help!

(TN) No electricity or building at work site since March due to natural disaster. Found out today we still don’t have electricity because workplace hasn’t paid bill. Going into winter with no heated building at site.

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 10:01 AM PST

I work at a university research farm. Back in March, a tornado came through our farm and destroyed our office building and most of our farm fencing, huts, equipment, trucks, etc. We have a building about a mile on campus to go to, but the 99 acres that we work on finally got a portable office in August. All that was left was setting up the electricity and putting furniture in there. It still has not happened despite my supervisor constantly fighting with the administration to get us electricity down there. Just found out today, we don't have electricity because they haven't paid for the electrical set up in another portable they set up to temporarily replace a classroom and office space also destroyed by the tornado. The professor this portable is for is able to work from home and told them he will not be teaching on site because of COVID. So that building is currently sitting empty and locked with fully functioning electricity. We are going into the winter month and the days are getting shorter. I have worked many evenings in the dark because the animal still have to be taken care of. I have been using a work truck for heat, but another idiot worker who borrowed the truck put diesel in it and it is now not working. So now, I only have my car for heat and we have already had more than a weeks worth of below freezing nights. We do have our lab a mile from our site, so this probably prevents anything from being able to be done, but we have over 300 animals now with no working truck, so my whole day is spent on site. I just am frustrated. Taking care of my animals and making sure they are getting what they need to stay healthy and happy is the one thing keeping me going. And the fact that my supervisor works just as hard (if not harder) than I do. Unfortunately, his hands are as tied as mine.

Boss asking for tools back that were taken from my paycheck

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 03:03 AM PST

Hi all. This is in Pennsylvania. I quit my job last week and was contacted over the weekend by my boss saying that I was required to return the tools I used for work (about $500 worth of tools). When I got hired, I signed a contract that states if you quit within a certain period of time you're not allowed to keep your tools. I would think this is an open-and-shut case on their end if it wasn't for this next detail. When they gave the tools to me, my paychecks were reduced to purchase these tools. They did not give me my full weeks' pay and then tell me to go purchase the tools with my money. They used my paychecks, before they were processed to me, to pay for these tools. If they take the tools back doesn't that mean I was technically not compensated for time worked? If they're going to take the tools back aren't they required to pay me for how much they deducted from my paycheck?

I'm not sure what the legality of the situation is because I did sign the contract but labor laws would say that I need to be paid for time worked.

UK post office Stole/"removed" a laptop from a Christmas package I sent to my sister in Brighton.

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 08:54 AM PST

I live in Norway. On November 25th I posted a Christmas package to my sister in Brighton, England.

This package contained a bunch of small Christmas gifts as well as my laptop, which is a rather good laptop, for her birthday which was on December 1st.

The parcel got stopped in the UK by an organisation called Parcel force (https://www.parcelforce.com/) they kept they sent a letter to my sister asking for VAT payment of around £160 before they would send it on to her.

She sent me the letter, and I paid that tax on Saturday (5th Dec) to parcel force. I assumed it was so high because the laptop is expensive.

Today (Tuesday 8th Dec) the parcel arrived at her apartment. It looked like it had been cut open and sealed back up again. She sent me a video of her opening it taking out all the presents, and then finding no laptop. (I had told her there was a laptop in there and that is probably why the VAT was so high.)

Instead of the laptop there was just a letter from parcel force stating that there was damaged goods in the package which arrived that way and that they had removed the damaged goods from the package and were not liable for this.

The letter has a bunch of the information missing, for example on the date section it just says "Date: [Enter Date]" The signature is just a couple of scribbled lines, and not even in the doctors signature type of scribbling. And the "package number" has been pasted on the letter in a way that you cannot see the package number.

The laptop is the only item thing missing. It really just seems like someone down the parcel force line stole the laptop. Is it in any way legal for them to "remove a damaged item"?

What avenues can I take in this situation? Who do I contact?

Neighborhood intentionally installed cam to view our back yard.

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 11:03 AM PST

Okay so I'm going to need to add some back story here, this started a few months back when we learned our neighbors were throwing walnuts and cigarette butts over our privacy fence into our backyard. We have tried talking to them but they are very nasty people and just want to be rude to us. We installed a camera to view our fence line to get evidence of their actions, the camera does show a small part of there yard but does not view into any windows. Just today we noticed they have installed a camera on there back porch facing directly into our yard over the privacy fence, made no effort to make it show any of her own yard. This camera is very clearly set just to view our yard. Is this even legal? We live in Illinois, we have talked to the local police about the previous issues we've had with her, and they weren't much help then.

[KY] Traffic cone attempted to enter bedroom window.

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 12:23 PM PST

    Hi all,

Today a traffic cone attempted to enter my bedroom through the window and broke it. I've filed a police report and notified the landlord but I have some questions. I'm reading Kentucky's KRS 383 and just want to double check some things.

    • Since I didn't break the Window, am I still responsible for paying for any part of the Window, deductible or otherwise? I do have renters insurance if it comes to it.
    • I don't think this will be a problem, but if it does: 383.635 says that after 14 days I can pay to fix the Window myself and deduct from rent, do I have a mitigate charges/damages if so? Specifically, can I order emergency window repair or do I have to order regular, scheduled repair?
    • Additionally, does any part of this fall under 383.640? It's not like they're not supplying it on purpose if so, but I'd like to confidentially know where I stand.
    • Is there any other part of KRS 383 or elsewhere that I should pay attention to?

    Thanks in advance!

Client demanding I violate stay-at-home order (California)

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 11:16 PM PST

    Hello,

I'm a DJ. About a year ago I booked a wedding for this coming New Years Eve (12/31/20). The client put down a $3200 deposit (40% of the $8000 invoice). Obviously this was long before we knew there was going to be a pandemic.

Now the area is under a stay-at-home order. Riverside County (the location of the wedding) is affected and there are not supposed to be any gatherings of any people from different households. However my client has decided to go through with the wedding anyway and is expecting around 200 guests. This wedding clearly violates both county and state health ordinances.

He is demanding that I DJ the wedding. Part of my services were to rent and set up the audio equipment, a temporary dance floor and lighting. None of the companies that rent those items out are even operating right now, making it quite literally impossible for me to do the job. Plus I obviously don't want to catch Covid and I can't in good conscience let my staff risk catching it either.

I have offered to return the deposit (he refused to accept), or to reschedule my appearance for a time when it is legal to congregate, but the client works for a law firm and has told me that if I refuse that he will consider me in breach of contract and that he will recover damages from me legally. Our written contract does not have any language in it regarding cancellations.

Today the client doubled-down and sent me an article about how the Riverside County Sheriff is declining to enforce the stay at home order, and said I have no excuse to not perform.

Can I really be held legally liable for refusing to violate the stay at home order? This has obviously been a tough year with literally no income since February. I can't afford to even defend myself in court, let alone pay anyone damages.

    Thanks in advance.

[TX] Found dog. Neutered him. Owner posted signs about a lost dog and now being sued for neutering his dog?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 12:36 PM PST

I found a dog on the street weeks ago who I took into my care since I couldn't find the owner in the area. Since he kept humping my leg at night and my other dogs, I decided to get him neutered and dropped around $700 on him for a physical as well.

Fast forward a few weeks later, I see a sign about the lost dog. I contacted the owner and brought his dog and he was obviously ecstatic but realized he was neutered.

He started to yell and ask why he was neutered, how could I have done that, etc. I didn't know what to say but just broke down and tried to leave until he asked me for my information which I didn't give him. As I was leaving he took pictures of my car and eventually found out my information, called me and said he would be taking me to court for neutering his dog without permission.

    What do I do?

    [IL] someone stole my phone

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 07:53 AM PST

Yesterday I went to a girl's house. I met her on tinder. She told me she lives alone. Me and her were chilling in her bedroom and a random dude barged into the room and was super pissed and asked what the fuck was going on. The girl and dude knew each other. It was basically a set-up and they lure ppl in to rob them.

He asked me to give him all the cash I had. So I gave him $80. He took my cell phone also. Then he told me to go back to my car and get more cash and then he will give me back the phone. I went to my car and got $30 more and went back and gave it to him. He lied to me and wouldn't give me my phone back. He asked me to unlock it and open up paypal and send him more money.

I tried to bargain with him but he wouldn't listen. I ran away. This happened in the west side chicago hood btw. I went to a local store and called the police. I waited an hour and they didn't show up. I called me dad and he came to pick me up. We called the police again and they finally showed up and we filed a police report.

Anyways, what else should I do? The police gave me a report number. I know where this guy/girl duo live. I want the cops to go knock on their door and tell them to give me my phone back. Is there anything else I can do? I really want my phone back. I know where these ppl live.

(Oregon) Doctors office potentially leaked my drinking problem to my employer.

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 03:45 PM PST

First things first, I'm going to be keeping this relatively vague for privacy reasons.

I have a drinking issue. It has really been made worse this year, after losing my job suddenly during the initial first few months of COVID, a lot of family issues and then losing my best friend to illness. My drinking has quickly progressed from casual to excessive but I have so far managed to only drink on weekends.

I have recently been dealing with some medical issues not directly related to, but could be enhanced by my drinking. I made an appointment to see a doctor specialized in what I'm dealing with. After making the appointment, I found out that my coworkers father is employed at said Doctors office. I found this out because I made the call in proximity to my coworker who over heard where I was going and who later explained their father worked there. This coworker has done some unrelated things in the past to make me not trust them.

While at the appointment, I realized that my coworkers father was in fact the person who would be doing my initial screening and medical questionnaire. I have never met them, but they knew I was coming and asked me about if I worked with said coworker. We made casual conversation before the questionnaire and i didn't think anything of it at the time. One of the questions had to do with my alcohol consumption. I answered honestly that I have roughly about 30 beers a week. However, I truly only do drink on nights that I am off the next day. I have limited myself to that and never broken that while working for this employer. I know it's hard to believe with the amount I drink, but that's the honest truth. Usually I will get black out drunk Friday and Saturday and only stop after I've fallen asleep. My coworker or anyone else in the business has ever seen me drink anything alcoholic. I have never shown up to work drunk or hung over.

Fast forward to last week, 2 weeks after my appointment. I was in the office and my boss, who has never once said anything about alcohol made a comment that someone who was just in my office smelled like alcohol. I said that I did not notice (I truly didn't.) He then made casual conversation with me while not so subtly gradually getting closer to me while pretending to be looking for something we both knew would not be in my office. Quite obviously trying to smell me. He then gradually changed the subject as to how my partner was doing and how I was dealing with the sudden loss of my best friend who passed a few months ago. Both of which are things I generally am not open to talking about with them, and they're only aware of because of days I had to request off relating to.

Ultimately, I am 99% sure my coworker's father told my coworker about how much I drink. And I think that coworker told my boss. If I can prove this, can they be liable for anything? While my drinking has progressed, it has never once effected any part of my work. I have continued to never miss a day and still perform my job extremely well. After this happened, it is truly making me feel ashamed and paranoid. Any advice?

Employer requests 16k from me for quitting

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 01:36 PM PST

How enforceable is my employers liquidated damages claim? The contract duration was 2 years long, but I've quitted at the 1.7 year mark because if I didnt do it then, I'd have to stay for another year with them (they had me working for other companies as a contractor and the renewal date for their contract was coming up).

They've requested 16k from me, which is about half of what I've earned in total after working with them for the past 1.7 years. They also did not give me the raise promised in their contract. And they've completely falsified my resume and contact information to market me out to work for their clients, which has damaged my employment seeking efforts tremendously.

They've offered to settle for less, but I'm so sick of them at this point that I dont want to give them a cent if I'm not required to. But at the end of the day, I signed their contract. So is this enforceable? State is Georgia.

Pipe burst by my corner lot, flooded yard, what will they pay for? (NC)

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 12:01 PM PST

The burst is at the stop sign on my corner and is dumping hundreds of gallons of water into my yard. They also have the fire hydrant running now. I have a contact to call about fixing the damages but I want to get ahead of it and know what I'm entitled to ask for. This has completely destroyed half my yard including a huge natural area that is under water with temps going into the 20s tonight. I'm in NC and I'm technically not inside the town limits. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

My roomates and I agreed to each pay 1/3 rent. They want to evict me and while they can't without cause, I'm afraid they will fail to pay their 2/3rds, blame the difference on me, and get me evicted.

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 01:08 PM PST

Sorry if this is rushed, it all happened in the span of about an hour and I am just trying to ascertain my legal rights before I move any further. My aunt said that in the state we live in the law says that if there are three names on a lease each person is only required to pay one third of the rent, however I don't know if this is true and I'm having trouble looking up information on it. There's no way I'm going to be able to get my roommate to sign a legal document saying that he has agreed to pay two-thirds of rent. I'm going back through all my old texts with him and his girlfriend and taking screenshots of anything pertinent but so far I can't find either of them directly committing to paying two-thirds of rent. I paid my rent for December so I'm covered until then but I know they're going to try to evict me at the end of december. they make considerably more money than I do and I'm not sure if they would be able to afford to take me to court.

What can I do from people parking in my driveway? (FL)

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 08:04 AM PST

The front of my house has 3 parking spaces. People routinely park in any one of the empty spaces and, from what I've observed, either walk to the business across the street or to another residential home across the street— or they just park and go wherever.

Recently, upon coming home from the grocery store, all three parking spaces were occupied by strangers. We weren't expecting anyone. My spouse parked perpendicular on our driveway blocking two of the cars while I approached a man walking toward our driveway back to his car. Told him he can't park in our driveway, etc. etc. He moved, but I don't want to have to continually deal with this. Just last week, my housekeeper and her assistant called saying they had nowhere to park. Happened again last night as I was sitting in the living room, but I didn't want to go outside and confront the guy because I'm a female and it was dark and I'm not looking to get injured.

What is the best way to stop this from happening? I was going to order 1-2 signs on Amazon that state "Private Property, No Parking." When we initially moved in, there was a sign, but it's small and down towards the grass in front of the spaces so it's not that visible, not that I feel it has to be to prevent people parking in someone's driveway… I didn't know randomly parking in someone's driveway was A Thing until I moved here.

In addition to the signs, can I order those no parking stickers that are difficult to remove and put them on the driver's side window? (The passive-aggressive side of me would really love to do this.) I work from home and don't have a direct view of the driveway from my office, but at least 3x/wk I come out to get a beverage or do something and notice a car in my driveway.

To be clear, it's a residential home. No nearby parks, schools, churches, or other establishments that would cause this to be an ongoing issue. There is a small business across the street, but they have decently-sized parking lot. Not everyone who parks is walking to that business though. This is literally a matter of total strangers parking in my driveway.

    Thoughts?

ETA: Interestingly, my neighbors don't have this problem, but they also have a substantially smaller driveway. They have noticed the number of 'guests' we seem to have though.

Going to court for what I feel is unjust harassment. Looking for advice.

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 12:35 PM PST

State is Iowa. Charged with harassment by local police. About 3 months ago a man moved into a duplex 3 blocks from where I live. For two months every single day my neighbors and I listened to him blast his subwoofer driving through the neighborhood. Its not your typical beater car blaring music, its a 50,000+ dollar truck with top tier sound system. I have no mind for music, and hear plenty of cars pass by playing music every day. This guys bass is a different level. Living 3 blocks away, I can hear the vibrations for 45+ seconds straight every day.

For a month my next door neighbor and I tried to figure out where it was coming from, and always struggled locating the sound. Each day id hear it and look outside, where I would see other neighbors every day doing the same thing. Its the same time, about 10 minutes after 5 every day. On October 8th, the neighbor man and I spotted the truck emitting the noise at the nearest intersection, 450 feet from my house, and hopped in his truck hoping to find the plates. We found the truck parked outside his duplex, I took pictures of the plates, and told the neighbor I would call the police if I heard it again.

On the 9th it occurred again, and I called the local police. They said they've received various complaints and that they could cite him under my word and I would have to appear in court if he contested. I suggested they just stop by and ask him to turn it down as it is displeasing the neighbors, and the officer obliged and spoke with him on the 9th, where he (man playing the music) claimed he wasn't playing music. The officer told me to call and try to record video of him passing by the next day.

City ordinance states music from an automobile is to be heard no more than 50 feet from a vehicle.

The music picked right back up Monday the 12th, and I called to let them know both my neighbor and I heard and saw the truck again. Officer said they will try to place a squad car near my house as soon as they have an open afternoon.

Friday 16 October, a squad car was sitting near my home, and caught the truck in the act, with bass shaking his windows from 500+ feet away. He was cited for noise ordinance and disorderly conduct. I gave my statement, and was instructed to let them know if it continued.

The music stopped completely until the week of November 23rd, where the truck passed M-F with the noise audible from my basement. On the following Tuesday, December first, I dropped a letter off at his doorstep, begging him to stop, saying he was embarrassing himself and the neighbors are laughing at his music, rather than giving him the positive attention he was looking for. I also rudely suggested that small men in big trucks are usually compensating for their small dicks. Rude and unprofessional from me, but I didn't think anything of it. The purpose for my letter was to get the music to stop. Since I wrote it, I have not heard the music a single time to this day.

I got a call that same evening from an officer asking if I left a letter at the doorstep of Jon Doe. I said I assume that is the man who has been playing the music (never met him personally), and confirmed I did drop off the letter. The officer told me they are investigating it and that I've made a mistake in doing so. I said yeah yeah and thought it was over.

Thursday December 3rd i received another call, saying that they deemed my letter harassing, and that I need to come to the station to sign and say I've been informed of their decision and agree to appear in court on the 12/15. I arrived and told them I felt it was unjust, and the officer said he felt bad giving the citation as he'd be just as annoyed living near the man,, but he didn't I would likely receive abusive letters back, and that is was his job to keep the peace between citizens. I understood where he was coming from and told him I will sign but protest to the courts.

Iowa code states: 708.7 Harassment. 1. a. A person commits harassment when, with intent to intimidate, annoy, or alarm another person, the person does any of the following: (1) Communicates with another by telephone, telegraph, writing, or via electronic communication without legitimate purpose and in a manner likely to cause the other person annoyance or harm

I am well aware I did in fact communicate via writing in a manner likely to cause annoyance. Nowhere on the internet can I find any legal writing pertaining to the definition of legitimate purpose. I feel writing a letter regardless of content that is intended to suggest that someone stops breaking the law (noise ordinance) is a legitimate purpose. I don't have the money to hire a lawyer and plan to fight it on my own. I am wondering what I can all do to best prepare for this if it goes to trial after my initial court appearance, or if I may be able to talk the judge (at initial hearing) into dropping the charges. I don't feel this case has any legs. I've never been to court before for any reason and am nervous and looking to best prepare. Thanks in advance.

    Property Stolen from Hotel Room

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 12:33 PM PST

    Hello friends,

    Location: Pottawattamie County, Iowa

About 10 days ago I had some items taken from my hotel room. One of the items being a $1,300 laptop and the rest were cheap peripherals for the laptop. The reason why someone was able to enter my room is because the lock on the door was not working, it didn't matter if I slammed the door or lightly pushed it. It would not lock, and the only lock on the doors was a handle lock. The person came into my room while I was asleep and stole my belongings. I didn't wake up for any of this which is scary. Management was aware of this locking issue before the robbery and did not fix the issue while I was staying at that hotel.

There has been a police report made and a suspect as well but due to lack of evidence no one has been charged with any crime. Currently, the only hope in getting the stolen property back is if the laptop is pawned which could takes months or years or never.

Is it possible to seek reparations from the hotel management company for the loss of value of the property? I have been thinking about contacting a theft lawyer for a consultation. I am afraid if I do seek reparations then the company will direct me to a lawyer of theirs and the money I would sink into the situation would simply be not worth it.

Thank you for taking the time to read this post.

Can an employer tell me I'm not allowed to eat at competing restaurants?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 08:10 PM PST

    Maryland:

I work at a BBQ restaurant, in a mall food court, and my boss has a policy that we aren't allowed to eat at any of the other restaurants, even off the clock.
