    Burned Out

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 03:16 PM PST

Anybody else feeling burned out from this year? I feel like I have no shits to give anymore for public accounting, there's so much more to life. After 2 firms audit and tax, 3 busy seasons, countless anal-retentive performance obsessed managers, something in my head just snapped in me today and I no longer have the energy for this culture anymore. After getting a message about how December is going to be very busy for some reason and I "need to keep the focus on client work" , I just can't do it anymore.

WFH, lack of motivation really hurting my career development?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 09:03 PM PST

Anyone else sort of feeling at their wits end with WFH?

Missing all the team interactions and just feeling like what I'm doing is pointless. Whereas I used to be the guy with a can do attitude and looking for opportunities, I'm looking for reasons to say no to work. I had a ton of billables this busy season, second most in the office, but still feel bad saying no.

Feel like I'm making stupid mistakes and don't feel like I'm growing at all. I'm supposed to be a senior in a year but I just can't see myself there, I feel like I know so much less than the current seniors but I just cannot make myself give enough of a shit about taxes to learn more. Find myself on my phone during trainings, watching netflix during the workday..

As a social guy.. It's been a killer. Around my girlfriend all the time as she's WFH too, and I love her, but all this time around each other isn't great for our relationship. I'm resenting her, sometimes I just want to be alone or with other people but obviously I can't.

Gained weight so I'm down on myself there too.

Idk feel like i'm just bitching but I really hate this shit

One month in and I want to quit LOL

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 09:16 AM PST

My first month at a middle market firm as an Audit Associate has been frustrating. The in charges don't seem to care enough or have the time to properly train me, so they usually just tell me to use last year's work papers as a reference.

As a result, I'm slacking hard..I don't really take this shit seriously as it's already clear to me that I don't fit in with public accounting. Im doing the bare minimum and it's probably going to be noticed at some point. If I get fired then fuck it. Being a food runner at a restaurant is more fulfilling than this garbage. All the fake enthusiasm is sickening too. My soul has begun dying already.

No matter how hard you work especially now you are a disposable object for a firm. Work to live not live to work.

    Life Post Public Accounting

To those you currently in public accounting dreading going to work in the morning:

The time you're putting in is valuable to your career. It's not for nothing. But when your gut tells you it is time to move on, LISTEN. Look out for you and yours first and foremost.

Accounting work/internship in a small city

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 07:45 PM PST

I live in a small city in Ontario (~50'000 people) and I was wondering if it would be a good idea to just walk into the industries and small firms in my city and ask about internships. There are a decent amount of cpa firms and manufacturing places that I could ask around at.

I'll go to career fairs at my uni in the future but I just changed majors, and I don't know what's going on with that since everything's online.

Additionally my gpa is okay at 3.2 and I don't have accounting experience, but I have some good recommendations from past employers in unrelated fields.

Also I'm not interested in big4. Big4 isn't worth it to me, and I doubt they'd want me anyways cause of my gpa. I've heard industry employers tend to not care about gpa (unless it's below a 3.0 maybe idk). Don't know about smaller public firms though. Anyways I'm sure a 3.2 isn't a deal breaker.

tl;dr I live in a small Canadian city, is it a good idea to physically walk into businesses and ask about internships?

WFH - More hours to complete tasks?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 05:42 PM PST

Do you guys find it takes longer to complete your work while wfh compared to at the office? I estimate it takes ~15% longer to complete tasks, but wasn't sure if others noticed a difference too? Between being down to 2 screens instead of 3, remoting in on a Mac w/ Citrix instead of just being on a pc (I live by keyboard shortcuts), and a lot of communication being typed over instant messaging instead of speaking to the person next to you. Curious others experiences, or if my experience is unique?

    Finally got a job offer

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 04:35 AM PST

Its entry level in audit (PA). I start next month. The market is rough out there and I wish I had any words of encouragement or tips for anyone thats still looking. I networked harder than Ive ever done before and still nothing. Somehow this one worked out so yeah, just keep on pushing.

In terms of busy season or first year's, any advice or things that worked for you? Im aware of the usual advice and wondering what other tips are out there that worked for you all.

EDIT: I passed the CPA and have the 150. Just need experience for the license.

    Planning to exit however,

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 11:53 PM PST

Hi! I know busy season is just around the corner. Currently B4. I have communicated my plans on exiting this season preferably before January. They were cool about it. I was advised to standby as it will be communicated with my in charges. However, one week has passed I havent heard from them and I'm also getting assigned with other projects as well. Should I contact my in charges directly about this? I was told by my seniors that they will be the one to communicate it before I officially hand my notice. I'm getting wary since new projects are being assigned, my seniors out of town, and others are already filing for holiday vacations.

Any advice without being so pushy about it. They said it will be hard since we are understaffed. Am I suppose to worry?
