How Do I Learn Marketing to Update an Out of Date Skincare Brand?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2020 10:24 PM PST

My family (immigrants without much education) have built a modestly successful skincare brand, but the company is insanely old fashioned.

They use fax machines and take orders by phone. The office computers probably run Windows XP. They have no social media presence.

Operationally, I could probably go in and change a lot, but I'm busy with my own full time job.

What I'm thinking is I can treat this as kind of a drop shipping opportunity where I don't have to worry about the reliability of the supplier. All I really have to do is improve upon virtually non-existent marketing and reap the benefits.

The problem is I don't have much experience marketing and no real framework. I'm also not particularly knowledgeable or passionate about skincare. I want to get into this more for the money and the challenge of growing an ecommerce business.

Does anyone have any advice or good resources on how to learn how to market this particular kind of product?

    Thanks.

What to do when the marketing step is discouraging?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 06:53 AM PST

    Hi all,

I am a developer by trade and I have always liked to create side projects and see if they could be the next big app or website. I love the creation and problem solving aspect of it , but whenever I finish a simple MVP or finish the project as a whole, I try to market it for a few days/ weeks but always get bored or discouraged and the project never goes anywhere after that because I end up moving on to the next thing.

I feel like whenever I go to market or promote a project I immediately second guess myself and the project before I even receive feedback. I think I also just dislike marketing a lot and am not very good at it(something I've always been working on learning more about and getting better at over the years).

As I have just released a new website, I am trying to break the cycle and actually get some users this time.

What are some tips you have to get out of the marketing hump and make it less daunting?

    Thanks a bunch!

Building a Candle Kit - What I've Learned

    Posted: 27 Nov 2020 03:24 PM PST

    Hi All,

I'm not the founder of a SaaS company or large tech giant, but today is the day I've been dreaming of my entire life. I finally have a product that's for sale. A while back, I hosted my cousin at my apartment. As a thank you gift he gave me a candle kit. I loved it and wanted to make more. When I went online, none of the kits had much personality and I thought I could do it better. With that being said, here are the things I've learned while trying to get this off of the ground.

    1. You Have to Start Somewhere - I've always wanted to be an entrepreneur, and have come up with hundreds of ideas. None of them ever went anywhere because I never took the first step. When I finally decided to focus on candle kits, I sat down one day after work and began to browse Alibaba for jar ideas. I ordered 5 samples that day. When you finally take the first step, you'll be surprised how things keep rolling.
    2. Don't be Afraid to Ask For Help - Maybe it's just that my friends are incredible, but most people are willing to give advice if you just ask for it. I tried never to take advantage of anyone, so when I needed a logo, or wanted my friend to model in some product shots, or needed an instruction manual made, I ALWAYS offered to pay them. They always tried to decline payment (I paid them anyway), but the point is that everyone is always so eager to help. One of my friends who works in the fragrance industry even spent an afternoon with me at Bloomingdales teaching me everything there is to know about candle scents and why some candles are so expensive. I couldn't have gotten this far without the support of others.
    3. Believe in What You're Doing - I've had so many doubts along the way. I mean, it's a candle kit. Could this really succeed. But I've also always believed in my core value proposition to produce the highest quality candle kits on the market and believe I've succeeded. When someone asks me about my product, I'm so excited to tell them about it because I BELIEVE in it.
    4. Source Domestic if Possible - Some of my kit components are from China and some are from the United States. Although I've worked with some great people from both countries, the barriers to getting products from china is a real pain sometimes. There is a huge language barrier and once I even got a product sample, loved the sample, ordered thousands of product, and then they showed up off spec (different from the sample we received). When we contacted them, they claimed that nothing was wrong. Of course there are some things that are just prohibitively expensive in the United States, so you'll have to go offshore, but if you can source domestic you're going to have an easier time.
    5. Test Your Website - There are so many great tools to build an e-commerce website now. We are using Shopify, but even pre-built themes can have their issues. We wanted to include a subscription component, and that was a pain. It was only after extensive testing that we were able to work through everything and I'm sure there may even be a few things we are missing.

I'm not a millionaire. I haven't grown into the kit making empire I would like to eventually be. But I've taken the first step. I wasn't afraid to ask for help. I believe in what I'm doing. I sourced my products the best I could. I built and tested my website until I was satisfied.

Today I have $405 in revenue, which is from friends and family, but I know I'll get my first "real" customer soon. I know you can all do it.

Questions About Making Email Subscription Service Landing Page?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 02:06 PM PST

I am working on an email subscription app (similar in concept to this: http://readwise.io). I have the Python code pretty much ready to go which is the actual software but I'm just running it in PyCharm atm. I'd love some tips for what programs/companies to use to build a landing page (like the website linked) which will take the customer's info/payment and a few other inputs which my program needs.

I've only taken Python development courses on Udemy/YouTube and need some general guidance on what I need to be looking at to make my program a full-fledged service. I've heard of Wordpress, Wix, but unsure if they have the ability to link to Python code to do what I'm envisioning? Maybe I need to learn a new language instead of Python to do this? Any help welcome!

I'm building a tool for customizable 3D & flat illustrations

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 05:56 AM PST

    Hey guys,

My name is Ishmam and I'm creating MakeSumo which is an editable 3D & flat illustration library.

    https://makesumo.com/

The problem I'm trying to solve:

💡 No website provides customizable 3D asset (where you can change 3D assets colors easily and download)

🎨 Not many sites provide you the ability to change colors of all components of a flat illustration (hair, eye, etc)

You can use these assets in your website, landing, app, or blog posts thumbnails.

You can visit the website to see the snippets and assets (also the demo tool).

Would love to hear your feedback and suggestions, Thank you🙏.

    Facebook Pixel not working

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 12:11 PM PST

I have 41 purchases on my pixel but when I try and make a look alike audience with my Facebook pixel it only says I have 2 purchases. What is this happening/how can I fix this?

"We received 2 Purchase events that contain value from your pixel in the past 60 days."

It says this when I try and create a lookalike audience.

    Lack of Communication/Reliability

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 11:45 AM PST

    Hello everyone,

I'm here to seek input on a matter that makes my blood boil and that I'm sure many of you have experienced as well and that is a lack of communication from those you are working with.

I've recently started a business that caters to the gaming industry by creating assets for them. Although I've run a couple unrelated businesses in the past, I've never had such an issue with having to "chase" after people who claim to want to work together as I do now.

A little backstory: Three weeks ago I released my first product. It's been received very well by the customers and sales have been steady. I've even been contacted by a couple merchants who are interested in hosting our product. I reply to them, make plans, communication is vivid, professional, and that great feeling of "partnership" comes alive to then just ... disappear. The dialog goes from being almost on a daily basis (updates, planning, etc.) to having and wait for a week for a reply, and even then, it only usually comes after me writing a follow up message.

There is nothing that I can see in the exchange that would trigger such "bi-polar" behavior in their communication aside from the "well, we hooked them, no need to further 'be nice'...".

This also is true with a lot of people I've tried to work with while starting the business. They all seem into it but when the time comes to actually produce or provide feedback, they're nowhere to be found, yet they come back when they need something and act like nothings happened.

Look, I can understand rejection after reaching out to publishers and never hearing back from them, it's part of the gig. What I don't understand is what seems like an utter lack of consideration and professionalism from those who I am actively working with. I find that while they're actually capable of communicating, they only do so when it's convenient for them.

I find at this point it's a lot easier to work by myself as most people I come across lack attributes and consideration which I feel are part of basic human decency, but really wished it wasn't this way. Have you guys experienced this, if so, how do you handle it?

    Many thanks in advance.

How to grow my Window/Gutter Cleaning Business?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 11:34 AM PST

I've been at it for about 5 months and it's been profitable when I get consistent customers. I'm averaging around 75$ an hour but most jobs only take about 2 hours. Most weeks I won't get any jobs, then suddenly I have 4 or 5. But I finish those jobs within the span of a week so it's a really sporadic amount of work. 90% of my customers have come from an app called Nextdoor, a few from facebook, and 2 referalls. I also have one commercial job cleaning a smoke shop every 2 weeks for 40$ but it takes only 30 minutes. The owner never asked me about a license or insurance and doesn't ask for invoices.

I Haven't actually made a business license yet or an LLC. I just wanted to get my foot in the door and get an idea what the work was like before doing all the licensing and other paperwork. I keep telling myself I'm going to do it all on the new year. I also haven't made any type of invoice or estimate sheet to give to customers.

The only marketing I've done was making door fliers with my name and number on them and hung them on doors but maybe only put up 400 out of the 2000 I ordered. I got 2 calls off the fliers and both jobs declined after the estimate. I've made simple truck magnets and some business cards with a name for the business I'm not sure I'll use yet or not. I don't have a website or social media.

I know it seems like I've answered my own question but please if anyone can give me any solid advice on what I've been doing/haven't been doing. I'm trying to get this to work for me full time as soon as possible.

How to prevent scams on my marketplace?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 09:45 AM PST

I'm launching a marketplace website soon. Sellers list their items, the buyer buys, and I collect the money. I make commission, and pay the rest to the seller.

How do I prevent scam artists from selling and never delivering? Hold their money until they submit a tracking number?

Your life can change if you follow a blueprint laid out by your role model

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 08:56 AM PST

Many of us have role models that look up to, or even just people that we aspire to be more like. In my case, this person…and most of my friends know this…is The Rock. Over the last 10 years, Dwayne Johnson has somewhat become a symbol of hard work and resilience. He's created much of his business around overcoming adversity and pushing through obstacles.

For me, he has played a big part in pushing me to go all in on discovering and pursuing my purpose.

Now, you might be able to see any of his many inspirational videos on his Instagram, but 2 of the lessons that I learnt from him are:

    • Remember the hard times (Those are the memories that will push you to work harder to avoid the hardships that you've previously been through)
    • Operate with your back up against the wall (This will drive you to keep finding solutions and doing whatever you can to keep making progress)

It is my 27th birthday today and I thought I would just take the time to acknowledge the difference that he has made in my life. I dive deeper into the lessons that he's shared and how it's helped me live a more productive, purpose-filled life here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GuwxWHfUn84

Let me know who your role models are and if anyone has inspired you in a similar way.

Recommendations for online calendar that allows customers to book in time slots

    Posted: 27 Nov 2020 11:50 PM PST

Recommendations for online calendar that allows customers to book in time slots

So basically I'm providing an online service and I want to have an online calendar that I can edit and show available time slots and for customers to book in their wanted time slots

I'll still in my start-up phase so ideally if it is free and looks professional

I really did want customers to have to Not spend time creating a profile since they had already put their details when they purchased the service

If they can just put in a their time zone , name and email to match it up that would be fine

I'm not running a word press site, so I cant just add in plugins and would prefer a 3rd party site party site

    • Which platform do you use to buy sites and why?
    • Which Niche and Monetization method do you prefer?
    • As a beginner what should I avoid to get scammed?
    • Some other tips or lessons you learned during the course.
