Posted: 05 Nov 2020 05:06 AM PST Welcome to this week's Fundraising Thursdays Thread. Ask about anything related to fundraising, investors, accelerators, grants, and other sources of capital. That includes how to find these sources, how to work with them, and how to negotiate with them. Don't be shy. The purpose of this is to learn and share ideas and methodologies with one another. Any question is a good question! If you are answering questions, remember to be kind and supportive. Many are just starting out and have no idea what they are doing. That's okay! We all knew nothing before we knew something. You can also find more support using instant chat on the /r/startups discord. [link] [comments] |
Took the leap and quit a great job to start a business Posted: 05 Nov 2020 07:17 PM PST I decided to start a business and took the leap to quit my job so that I could focus completely on making it work. Obviously a huge risk. I actually like the job well enough and was moving in an upward trajectory pretty quickly. Curious if you guys have any stories of taking the leap and quitting/trusting your instincts. Are you glad you did it? [link] [comments] |
Anyone else feel like you’re not smart enough? Posted: 05 Nov 2020 06:37 PM PST I certainly do. I see these guys coming up from Stanford and MIT and the Ivy leagues and and founding these awesome companies and I'm just like fuck man. Like how the hell am I supposed to compete with these guys if they're like fucking 800 SAT math geniuses coming from the fucking best universities in the world? I recently saw this article about the top universities for venture funded start ups and I think the only one that wasn't on the top 10 best colleges in America list was the University of Illinois. And it's a real bummer because this has always been like a dream of mine, to start my own thing, but there is a chance that I'm just not that smart enough and and it sucks to feel that way because there's like nothing you can really do about it. It's not like I can increase my IQs to become the next Sergei Brin or something. And lastly, should I even worry about this? Is this is like a real concern I should have or not really? Would like some tips for my new startup Posted: 06 Nov 2020 12:50 AM PST Hello! I recently launched an e-commerce startup about 4 months back. I have been getting consistent orders everyday, however, the number doesn't go above 5 (on a day-to-day basis). Due to which my revenue has also been dropping. Any tips or advice on how to increase my sales would be greatly appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Made $20k in 2 months with our Lifetime Deal, now comes the hard part Posted: 06 Nov 2020 01:42 AM PST Hey Guys, As the title suggests, we made a good amount from our Lifetime Deal sales in 2 months. - 500+ early users As a first time SaaS founder, things have been very exciting + overwhelming. The initial Revenue from the LTD was nice, but I realize that getting subscribers for MRR is going to be vert hard. We're a SaaS product which focuses on Speech Synthesis to help users start a Podcast without recording anything. Question - For founder who have launched a LTD and have subscribers as well; what was your best ROI acquisition channel? For a Product like ours, I feel like the target audience is broad, would love some direction on this. We have a bunch of things in place like SEO, Content Marketing, YT. Since our target audience happens to be Bloggers, content creators. Question - As someone who doesn't code, is it a Good Idea to get a CTO/Co-founder on board? We have stuff like Voice Cloning + feature additions in development, although having someone work actively on the Tech is relieving. [link] [comments] |
Best way to manage client services? Posted: 06 Nov 2020 01:40 AM PST So I'm looking to start a small business helping clients with different services based on what they purchased, want/need. I have found that i can't quite find software or anything else that could help with that. I did a little research and I learned I should get a CRM? Haven't had the chance to try any yet but is that the best option for a very small startup like me; and if so what would you recommend, I don't wanna spend a whole lot. [link] [comments] |
Random but specific question about user sign ups and genders Posted: 05 Nov 2020 07:15 PM PST I'm slowly but surely building out an app and one of the sign up requirements, and also detailed targeting feature requires a gender selection. Might I get push back or negative feedback by including "male" and "female"? I'm aware there's a whole spectrum of sexual orientation from non-binary, to trans, to cis gender, etc - but from a simplicity perspective, it would be the cleanest user experience to provide as few options as possible for the user. If someone identifies as a female, yet was born a male - it's totally fine with me, but will I be pissing people off by not including all options? Any input is appreciated, thank you! Shares For Foreign Remote Employees? Posted: 05 Nov 2020 12:01 PM PST I'd imagine this will vary per country, but are there any good options for offering shares to foreign remote employees? Some options I can think of would be some sort of pass-through vehicle, or an unofficial 'promise' of options that could be fulfilled if there is an exit. The second option might be problematic since it would 'theoretically' affect the cap table but not officially, so those would be out of sync. I'd imagine this has come up for some of us here, any experiences to share? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Starting youth American football training classes Posted: 05 Nov 2020 11:04 AM PST Hello all! Been looking into starting up some outdoor (or indoor) youth football training classes. Experience in the sport I have no problem with, but unsure as to what I would need to start legally. Is liability insurance a must, or would a waiver be okay? What if the child gets injured on a town field, could those parents turn around and sue the town? This may go town by town or city by city in regards to field permissions, etc., but I was wondering if anyone has any experience in doing anything similar and how you got it off the ground? Solving your own vs solving other people's problems Posted: 05 Nov 2020 05:52 AM PST I've been reading and following various projects, side projects and startups. What I realized is that majority of them create something that should solve someone else's problem and then try to find customers. What happens here is that creator of a product tries to understand different people and their problem and actually never or rarely uses his own product. I was doing the same thing, I always tried to solve someone else's problem instead of my own. I think it would be much more useful for creator to create something for himself, thus he will actually use the product and see how useful it is or it is not For example, before messaging apps there was SMS, John wanted to have free messaging so he built messaging app to communicate with his friends for free. So John actually created product for himself and also helped his friend to communicate for free. What do you think about that approach: build for yourself? [link] [comments] |
