I don’t know what to charge... small business

I don’t know what to charge...

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 02:10 PM PST

I need some guidance and how much to charge for my paper hot air balloons. I make them by hand, and it takes around 6-8 hours to put one together. Materials cost on average around $15.

I'm thinking of charging around $55 for each balloon. Can anyone provide some guidance in this area?

Here is a link to some of the balloons: https://imgur.com/gallery/m9YsLB4

I am editing this post after seeing all of your amazing comments. I am genuinely shocked to not only hear your meaningful ideas about price, but your kind support. I have to admit your feedback is really a dream come true, and further evidence I'm on the right track. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the reality check.💖

    Lead generation 101?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 04:22 PM PST

    Hi guys and girls!

I'm a new poster here, and in my day job I am an owner operator of a mobile mechanic shop. We do very well from word of mouth mentions and referrals, but have next to no lead generation process, and I'd like to fix this.

We have the basic web presence setup, but I'd really love any valuable "nudges" in the right direction to resources where I can learn.

    Thanks once again!

    Covid disinfecting business sales help

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 03:04 PM PST

I have recently started a covid disinfecting business on the side of my painting business. Paint sprayers can be used for spraying sanitizer oppose to buying $3000 dollar electrostatic spray machines which gave me the idea. I am mainly getting new homeowners moving into new home they've bought.

I'm about to start cold calling real estate agents. Wondering if it could be illegal or unwise to offer agents a commission for pushing my business to a homebuyer oppose to just the usual "recommend us please". If this is wise, what's the best way to frame this offer?

I'm not sure if this is a stupid question but something feels weird about making that offer. Also any other ideas to bring in this type of business would be appreciated. Thanks.

Keeping track of leads across multiple campaigns for different customers (different outbound addresses)

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 04:09 AM PST

Disclosure, posted over at Email Marketing as well: https://www.reddit.com/r/Emailmarketing/comments/johobo/keeping_track_of_leads_across_multiple_campaigns/

How do I keep track of, or sort leads across multiple campaigns?

e.g. I message Lead A on behalf of Cust A and later on, on behalf of Cust B. To be clear, the campaigns do come from different emails, but I want to be able to track how a lead responded to first campaign so that I can later use that info to inform other future campaigns.

    For example:
I run an campaign for Cust A.

    • Lead A is interested
    • Lead B is not

I run a campaign for Cust B, who has services similar to Cust A

    • Lead A should be a potential target
    • Lead B less so

Now lets say I'm running several of these and I want to be able to keep track of how each lead does through each step of sequence in the outreach and then overall in response to that campaign.

Is there a process or tool that can help with that? Since most CRMs are limited to a single company, I'm wondering, do I use a central database to log all this info? and if so, what should it be?

I thought about using tags to document how leads are doing through the campaign sequences and then the final result, but the CRMs that I'm using currently are limited. Bigin (Zoho) is limited to 5 tags. Hubspot doesn't yet allow tags.

    Offering free Google Analytics services

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 03:58 AM PST

Rule #1 Post only questions about small business.

Would you in exchange offer your review and/or opinion of my services?

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With that out of the way, I would like to offer my services to small businesses and entrepreneurs for Google Analytics analysis and reporting.

I decided not to create a new account or use a throwaway for this to add authenticity behind my purpose. Over the summer I finished my degree in Digital Audiences and want to start to get a footing/head start into a career. Currently at my job I am responsible for all digital content, website management, social media, and information services. I have also received a certificate in Digital Marketing in the past couple years. (all 3 above are with state universities degree, job, and certificate) Those are my qualifications. I also have been doing freelance graphic design and multimedia editing for the past 15 years to add to experience.

Basically I would like to start to offer my services freelance to small businesses and entrepreneurs but don't/can't use current work as examples.

SO, this is where I would like to help out a handful of people in return they help me out improve my services.

Just starting out this would be basic Google Analytics reporting. You would have to have had Google Analytics already set up on your website and running (preferably 6+ months). You will need to add my email to user permissions to only Read & Analyze. I only will be reviewing the data that Google Analytics provides and submitting a report back to you about it.

I will be doing a basic scan of the Google Analytics reports looking at visitor demographics, popular pages/links, referrals, traffic sources, types of traffic, and anything else that sticks out. I can look for certain things or research sections if you would like, but not necessary on your part.

This isn't really a giveaway or contest, but rather I would like to help businesses/entrepreneurs who would like/need this service or someone who would like to genuinely provide feedback on my services. Because of that I will be screening the data that I look at.

Please send me a message with information about your business, website, and what you might be looking for. From there I will provide you an email for you to add to your Google Analytics permissions which I will walk you through if needed.

Thanks and look forward to working with everyone.

Please feel free to use the comment section to discuss this post or let me know you send me a message. :)

Do you participate in Small Business Saturday? How do you make the most of it?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 01:21 AM PST

I know most businesses lean towards Black Friday, but since it's the embodiment of big corporations and consumerism, I prefer Small Business Saturday.

Is your business part of SBS? What marketing and sales strategies do you use to attract more customers and make them buy from you?

Do you have any ideas for the upcoming SBS?

Advice on starting a beverage company

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 01:07 AM PST

Hello. Has anyone had any experience starting up a small beverage company? Alcoholic or non, either is fine. What with pandemics and lockdowns, I'm guessing some of you have given it a go.

I'm looking to do the same, I have a few ideas that I'd love to run past someone who knows what they're doing. Or, to be fair, someone who's tried and failed. All experience is good experience!

Wix has grown clunky and expensive - Suggestions for a better website builder and host that includes ecommerce?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 08:45 AM PST

I know everyone usually builds on Wordpress but I'm very reluctant because I find it to be unapproachable: I have old-school html coding experience but would prefer something with a customizability UI like Wix offers. Price is less of a factor than being able to edit the website well and have a solid mobile ecommerce platform. What do you all use for your businesses?

How to remain calm against Goliath

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 08:37 PM PST

    Hi all,

I don't know where else to ask this but I'm hoping to gain some valuable insight and advice from this community.

My small business has just crossed the 2 year mark in business. Everything has been great and even greater since the pandemic started. We operate a small niche in our local community of about 6-10 cities near a big city.

Fortunately there hasn't been too much competition but I know it's coming.

I've been keeping my eye on THE giant of this industry as they recently acquired a smaller company that does exactly what we do. The Goliath company bought that guy out and rebranded it with their niche business which will be a direct competition to our company. They started operations across the country but have expanded at the speed of light. Today I saw that they are hiring in the area so it's safe to say that they will finally be in my area within the next few months.

How do I possibly keep calm and focus on staying on business? This is my first business and I've never encountered such a situation before. I am proud to say that we have a perfect 5 star rating all across the board (Yelp, google, Facebook, etc.) We have a strong presence on Instagram and keep a very personal and caring relationship with all of our customers.

With that said, we don't have nearly as many resources and buying power as this giant. They can offer lower prices and a bigger presence with enormous marketing. I know for certain that our customer service is our most valuable trait but I'm coming here to ask for any other input on what else I can do or keep in mind?

I take tremendous pride in our company and how much it has improved the lives of many in our community, and I would hate to get taken out of business.

Any advice is very much appreciated, thanks!

Do NDAs need business address included?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 09:51 PM PST

Some context for the situation: Sending an NDA to manufacturer before I disclose the items I want included in the product they are making for me using their base product. They have a building address but I am starting an e-commerce business (only shipping in Canada and maybe USA in future) using products they will manufacture so there wont ever really be an actual business address. Do I just use my home address? Does the NDA need an address on my side or can it just have their address but none for my part?

All the NDAs I've seen thus far have had addresses for both parties but they were for businesses using store fronts to sell products so I'm unsure if e-commerce ones need them as well.

How to handle non paying customers?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 09:48 PM PST

Hi everyone, I'm a CPA and provide bookkeeping and tax preparation services for my clients. Due to the nature of my business and constant deadlines, I often perform the work and submit it prior to getting paid. I've been self employed for 2 years and just had my first problem so it's been working well until now. This client is very nice. I did a lot of work for her under a huge time crunch (didn't charge extra for the rush because it was already a big project). After completion, I sent her my invoice with an "upon receipt" due date. She did not pay it. After a week, I followed up letting her know that as per our agreement, I will need to charge interest after 1 month and may have to send her bill to a collection agency. She informed me she was having difficulties due to covid so I offered to work with her. After multiple attempts (pushing back due date, splitting bill, offering a discount, waiving interest and holding off collection) she still hasn't paid. She is self employed herself and has had clients not paying due to covid as well. I dont want to put her in a bad situation but considering the size of the project (and expenses associated with it that i personally had to cover) and the fact that the next few months will be slow income-wise, I do want to collect on this as soon as possible. Do you have any recommendations? Anything like this happened to you and how did you manage to collect? Or when did you decide to give up on trying to collect?

What business activities do you wish you could outsource?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 09:01 PM PST

Hey everyone! I'm working on my MBA capstone project, and we're trying to understand frequent frustrations with common business processes like accounting/tax prep or business banking that might be difficult or time consuming.

I'd love to hear your thoughts. Also, I've created a pretty quick Qualtrics survey. If you could spare a couple minutes to fill that out, it would be a huge help. Thanks!

    Gym equipment

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 09:17 AM PST

Hello, I'm 24 IT guy working as an employee (6am-2pm) in a large company for 3 years. I don't have a college degree and I feel like I don't want to live my whole life as an ordinary corporate employee.

I've been going to the gym for 10 years, but now they've all closed them, so I made my own equipment to the garage gym (Power Rack, Bench, Log lift, Farmer's Walk, Frame carry). I can make these things for a fraction of the sale price. I make everything myself in my garage. I really enjoy working with steel and wood. It occurred to me to combine two things that I can and love. Gym and create.

Do you think that makes sense nowadays?

In the past, I tried to start a subs. boxes business, but without success. I'm trying to find a direction in which I could be successful.

    Thank you for your feedback!

One Time Free Google Analytics Integration and Help

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 06:06 PM PST

    Hi guys,

I've recently started trying to market myself as a data analyst so I can work remotely while abroad. I started just 3 months ago and have done a few projects on Upwork. You can see my profile and reviews here:

    https://www.upwork.com/freelancers/~01c7ed8cec93d24f04

I wanted to expand the services I provide so I completed a Google Analytics Individual Certification. However, I don't have access to an account that I have sufficient permissions on to really test/explore some things I want to try. I want to gain some confidence before submitting proposals to clients.

So, I'm looking for anyone who has a website or Shopify store, and are willing to create a analytics account and give me "Edit" permissions for at least a week. In return, I will help set up some custom dashboards and also some downloadable automatic Google Sheets pdf reports.

Essentially, I'd like this to be a dry trial run for what I'd offer a potential client.

Also, here's my portfolio page if anyone's interested:

    Thanks,

Dealer wants us to pay for an ad in their catalog - is this a normal thing?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 10:14 AM PST

We sell products to a few dealers. One dealer that we sell a lot to started wanting suppliers to pay for ad space to advertise our products in their catalog. It's basically 1/4 page with a photo and a listing of our products. The previous owner reluctantly agreed to do that at a greatly discounted rate, even though we had done business with that dealer for years without paying them anything. Fast forward a few years and the dealer has gone to a color catalog and the amount they want for an "ad" in their catalog has increased 4x.

Is it at all typical for a dealer to want a supplier to pay for part of their catalog? My gut says no why would I pay for space in their catalog, that's their business and their decision, not ours.

But A) Would that damage my relationship with the dealer and B) Would they run the ad anyway? If they didn't run the ad then our sales to them could suffer, which is a big source of revenue. How much sales would suffer without the ad I can't guess.

ETA: I wrote them an email saying those rates are unfortunately way too expensive for our business. Someone got back to me pretty quickly and said the discount information was not transferred over to their new system. They had given us a heavy (like 80%+) discount right from the beginning before. They say the corrected rate should be roughly the same as previously. So I'm guessing their undiscounted rates are for the "whales", large corporations that wouldn't care, not for small businesses.

i am trying to start up a beading/jewelry company and has some products made, should i start to sell what i have or wait til i have all my materials to make everyone's orders ?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 05:20 PM PST

as title says, i make necklaces/chokers, bracelets, anklets and rings. might touch on earrings and chained necklaces but most likely just earrings as i have some materials (just not the charms yet). i am new to the whole small business and this is just a side thing. i haven't put too much money in it ($60 in total which is cheaper than i expected haha). i have a page for it and it got some followers from my main account and a lot of people are interested in an evil eye necklace i made... problem is i only had one as a bead set ive bought only had one evil eye but i did order some beads prior just waiting for them in the mail. i don't want to keep people waiting and i feel it isn't fair if someone gets it while others wait. then again i do have anklets i made that people want but not a lot of colors to choose from.

should i list some anklets or wait for everything to come in so people have more choices in customization ? thanks !

How do you get the important things up and running?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 04:59 PM PST

What is the mindset and key things in order to : 1. get the marketing activities making a return on investment 2. getting the product right using the right product designers and manufacturers. 3. Getting everything in between up and running.

My thinking are the key parts are: good managerial oversight(issue solving), good smart marketers/designers/etc. Good ceo to get the right growth.

If all things go well it can catch fire and start cash flowing and really go somewhere. Is this the general idea? if not, what is your idea?

How do I ask a SaaS pilot user what they’re paying for their current solution?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 04:53 PM PST

Ive built a promising SaaS portal on top of an existing, successful API. The API is roughy 5 years old and I feel good about it's pricing model due to APIs being more transparent about pricing, including my competitors.

I am working with 3 clients, and between them, they're migrating from the 2 industry leaders. They're large companies who don't make pricing available.

How can I ask these teams about their current fees? I plan to undercut their current solution, while also having a transparent pricing model. I really have no idea what these large companies are charging.

I'm worried that I'm stagnate as a business owner (rolling out a product)

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 11:58 AM PST

    Hi Everyone!

I'm back again searching for answers.

My business started doing pre-orders of our card game a couple of weeks ago. During this time we managed to get ourselves interviewed in a local publication, things were going well. Our followers on social media increased and a couple of pre-orders took place on our website. We were initially hesitant to take pre-orders because we hadn't yet placed the order with our manufacturer so we just said it was "coming soon". Fast forward to today the order is submitted, however we are still waiting on concrete dates from the manufacturer. We feel like it's hard to push pre-orders without a date of arrival. We don't want to guess either and have people be upset if something outside the realm of our control happens.

Additionally, we had some set backs for our marketing plan. We had planned on getting our card game turned into a watered down instagram filter game and were in the process of hiring someone to do the work. Both programmers we were speaking with on fiverr went ghost and to get the job done via upwork is firmly outside our budget. We had planned to leverage the mini-game to create more interest and possibly more local coverage for our game.

Here are some steps we've taken despite the setbacks:

    • We are in the process of recording a mini game on the street series to show people interacting with our game to verify public trust as well as promote a ground game.
    • We started a "this or that" version of our game on instagram stories
    • We've reached out to the manufacturer and requested some photos and or video of our product.

    Our questions:

    1. What can we do to drive pre-orders?
      1. Should whatever we do be contingent on setting a date of delivery?
    2. Should we find the money for the instagram story mini-game? (Even if it drains capital)
    3. What else could we be doing to eliminate this feeling of stagnation?
    4. What media angles could we take to receive more coverage?

Looking to start an activewear brand - what have you learned from yours?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 03:26 PM PST

Hey reddit, it's me, the typical guy who wants to start selling clothes. Obviously it's not as easy as it sounds, so I'd like to have your experiences if you have an activewear brand. I will be partnering up with a small local gym / training studio at launch, so hopefully we can leverage that. I also have some experience in the clothing industry, but not in activewear specifically, so that will help too.

    So my questions:
    - Most popular activewear pieces? (Shirts, joggers, hoodies? etc..)
    - Where do you source your products from, and did you make a custom cut or are you selling a pre-existing cut with your logo on it? My current choices are local printers or Alibaba.
    - Why do people choose your brand over your neighbor? And don't they go with the big players? (Gymshark, Nike etc)
    - Your most effective marketing medium? I'm thinking Instagram here..

Thank you for your time. Links to your store and socials really appreciated!!!
