"Standing" at a stop light Insurance

"Standing" at a stop light Insurance

    "Standing" at a stop light

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 01:02 AM PST

So I watched this video from VINWiki and in his second story starting at 4:45 he tells the story of how he was hit while stopped at a stoplight in the USA.

However he uses the term "Standing" at the stop light, he was "stopped but he was standing" I think he puts it, and the other driver says he was at fault because he was "standing" at the stop light.

What's the difference here? Google tells me that the difference is where you stop, apply the handbrake, and may take the vehicle out of gear (and it took me a while to find that definition which is what I think makes the most sense here). Which to be fair, if it's a long light sequence, I absolutely do to give my clutch leg a rest.

So....is it in any way illegal or a contributor to fault to "stand" where, and this is a guess, to put your car in park or neutral depending on your geartrain of choice and put the handbrake on?

To me, and as far as I am aware in Australia, if you're stopped at a red light and get KO'd from behind, you're at 0% and someone who barrels into a stationary object is generally 100% at fault, unless you are stopped illegally or dangerously or have some kind of reason they couldn't see you (like I dunno, a huge amount of chrome that's dazzling other drivers).

But this is the USA we're discussing and I'm in Australia, so I'm not overly familiar with how it goes over there.

I have also heard you can be partly at fault if you have an unmarked overhanging load, which by the looks of the car in the video, is not the case.

So yeah, what would have made the other driver assume that he was partly at fault for being stopped/"standing" at a red light?

    Is /r/insurancepros a dead sub?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 03:13 AM PST

I noticed the sidebar in this sub lists /r/insurancepros, but nothing loads when I click on the link. I just recently acquired my Claims Adjuster License here in TX and was looking for a spot with other's currently in the biz to pick their brain and get more insight into the wild world of claims adjusting.

Do I need to report an auto accident in another country and someone else's car to my insurance?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 03:31 PM PST

I was recently in Australia, driving my friends car and I got into an accident where I was at fault. We reported the accident to my friends insurance with me as the driver and everything was taken car of in Australia without the involvement of my insurance. Now I'm back in California and shopping around for new insurance and I keep being asked if I have been in an accident in the last 5 years. Is it fraudulent to not report the accident even though it took place in a different country and vehicle? Thanks

Short and Long Term Disability Insurance - CA

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 10:41 PM PST

So I've been at my current job a few years but this is the first benefits period where we have to pay out of pocket for insurance. Scrutinizing my options and what I'll have to pay, I noticed that Long Term Disability that starts at 180 days is cheaper than the 90 day one. From what I understand, in California I'm covered for 52 weeks under short term disability. If I choose the employer 90 day LTD insurance does this mean I can claim more money (double dip?) sooner than if I chose the 180/LTD? Or is this not the case? You can only claim STD, then you transition to LTD? Does my employer LTD pay out more than STD? What benefits do I get going with the pricier 90/LTD versus 180/LTD?

How do I determine replacement cost for stuff like an 8yo $2k gaming PC after lightning strike for filling out a Homeowner Insurance claim form? (USA)

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 08:12 AM PST

    Background

I got some bad electrical lightning damage. The insurance company came out and took pictures of some electronic items and my melted and charred electrical panel/breaker box. They gave me a form asking for a list of damages items, receipt or date purchased, serial number, and "Replacement Cost" which I guess is the RCV. It sounds like they'll first send a check for the depreciated cost pay replacement costs later. Oklahoma, USA.

    The Question

Some items are easy since to figure out a replacement cost since they are relatively new and available to re-purchase (what happens if I put an exact price and it rises between now and buying?). The big question though is: what do I do about an eight year old gaming PC? New ones aren't exactly an equivalent as so much has changed. My first thought is on stuff that's changed so much to just price a similar 'tier' of product (eg mid-high-end) which is pretty much about the original price down and put that as the replacement cost. My guess is they'll be sending me back a paper listing my 'max' replacement costs they authorize for each item so I know my limit?

    Bonus Thoughts

I originally paid like $6k for all these items when they were brand new. I worry they are going to think I'm trying to exaggerate damage, especially with like my 2yo $2500k Sony TV's HDMI inputs dying from non-surge-protected inputs plugged in, but I have expensive electronics that broke from this nightmare... Even some cheap items were damaged that I'm listing. I'd much rather have my old stuff than go through all this major hassle. I already got my electrical panel and appropriate wiring fixed for $6k out of pocket while I wait to get paid back by this. The electrician signed an affidavit stating all evidence of damage was consistent with a lightning strike.

Thank you so much for any help in advance!

Rear ended, don't know what to do

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 10:18 PM PST

I recently got rear ended and I am not at fault. I agreed with the other guy to not call insurance and for him to pay out of pocket for repairs. Did I make a bad choice? Should I call insurance and have them sort it out? And lastly, is there a possibility for a diminished value claim for a 3 year old car with under 20k miles?

    Edit: I'm in Florida

Too much for full coverage? Geico and Root insurance thoughts!

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 01:59 AM PST

I am currently paying $260 per month for full coverage on a 2015 chevy Cruze. I've never received a ticket or been in an accident and my bill keeps increasing with Geico. I am 21 years old and I think this is a bit high. What do you guys think? Root quoted me $174 with the same deductible and coverage. Does anyone have any experience with root?

    Health insurance plans during pandemic.

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 01:57 PM PST

Hello. I have a HDHP with an HSA account, but was considering switching to BCBS or other low deductible plan due to the pandemic. However, I do enjoy having the HSA. Both my wife and I are healthy, no frequent medical expenses. Any opinions on switching plans during the pandemic

Edit: I live in the USA/Arizona.

    You have a stable

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 11:10 AM PST

TL;DR your premium is higher when you are covered accurately.

Just quoted a homeowners. Researched the address with a common real estate website. Notice there are stables on property, gotta include that. I can see marble countertops but caller says builders grade for kitchen and bath (okay dude). Detached garage added too. Caller states the mortgage company does not have a required limit (yeah right, but whatevs, we'll run with the minimum replacement cost). Match deductible to existing policy, set recommend limits and add water backup.

    Annual premium >$15k.

"The highest quote I've had so far was $700 something! That is ridiculous!"

Dude, you have a stable. And I didn't even get to add the extra shop, the pond, or the corral.

Good luck disputing your claim when you didn't cover yourself properly

    Renters Insurance

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 07:43 PM PST

Hello all. I am moving in with my partner, and the apt complex wants me to have a 500k Insurance policy, coming to about 100 dollars a month, through state farm, and am open to suggestions, I was told that's not normal though. I live in Seattle and lots of things are expensive, but is a 500k policy asking too much of me? I've never had renters insurance before. Thanks for the help in advance

CA - Car Insurance Claim through at fault party

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 10:59 PM PST

My car was hit by someone who admitted to be at fault for the incident which has been accepted by his insurance. I'm in the process of getting the damages estimated but am wanting to know what the at fault party's limit is so that I can be prepared if it is not sufficient. The rep said she couldn't provide this to me but I'm wondering if that's illegal? What's the best solution in this case? I'm worried it is the minimum $5k. Thanks.

Any way I can get out of this cost?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 06:46 PM PST

I have USAA auto insurance, and my cost yas signifigantly gone up since I was in a fender bender. The other driver faked being injured and got money I guess. So now I have to pay a little over $1000 every 6 months when I used to pay about $600 every 6 months. This accident happened 2 years ago, they said the price would go down in 2022. Is it possible to get with another insurance company so I dont have to pay this much anymore?

Replacing unmatchable siding on a house

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 05:31 PM PST

I filed a claim for damage to the siding on my house after the derecho (140+ mph windstorm) here in Iowa back in August. It's old aluminum siding. The insurance company ordered an itel report and there is no match to have it repaired, so they agreed to have it replaced (on 3 sides of the house) with new aluminum siding.

I don't like the aluminum siding and planned on re-siding the house "someday". Am I able to replace it with a different type of siding? The estimate from the insurance company is on the low end, and if I'm able to replace the aluminum siding with a cheaper option, I'd like to save some money. I've gotten the ACV payout, and I'd like to move forward with a contractor, but I'm wondering if I'll end up penalized in the end if I replace it with something else.

*As a side note (not a pity party, I promise), my insurance company has been horrible throughout this process. I've had two inspections over almost 3 months, both inspections omitted obvious damage, their final estimate was low for cost of materials, they've had to correct the estimates at least 3 times because they made mistakes, and there is still more damage they won't agree to cover. It takes days to get my calls returned. They changed my adjuster without notice. It's been nothing but a struggle. I say all this because I don't trust what the company will say if I ask this question to them. It's been nothing but mistakes and delays since the start.

Uninsured motorist coverage payout: Will health insurance claim it?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 08:54 PM PST

I was involved in an accident on a motorcycle. Driver pulled in front of me. Police report confirms other driver at fault; they drove on suspended license with no insurance. I am currently recovering from two broken arms and some other injuries.

My relevant policy limits: (Trust me, I've learned my lesson here)

    UM: 25/50k // UMPD: 10k $100 deductible // MedPay: 1k // No EIP // Collision $500 deductible

Licensed and insured in Washington. Accident happened in Oregon.

Health insurance has started processing claims from various doctors. Fortunately for me, this coverage is very good with low deductibles and OOP max. So I'm not going broke (yet).

Looks like the hospital is billing auto insurance first (as it seems they would) and obviously that 25k from UM would be gone instantly as hospital bills alone are already over 200k.

Should I be expecting to get a 25k (plus 1K MedPay) check from auto insurance or will it just be paid out directly to the medical providers/health insurance? If I do receive that check, will it just be clawed back by health insurance before they honor my medical claims? Or is it mine to keep for "pain & suffering"? I am already approved for disability payments through my company at 90% salary.

Side question: I realize my vehicle coverages are extremely weak but will the UMPD pay anything out for the totalled motorcycle? It has a lower deductible at least. Perhaps it will cover non-OEM accessories and property lost on the bike above and beyond the collision payout.

    Thanks for reading.

    Aetna or United?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 01:42 PM PST

I'm in Austin, TX and my employer this year is giving us the option to choose between Aetna or UHC. It's the same plan, same costs, just different provider. Unless it's as simple as one being better, what are the pros and cons of each?

It's been UHC the past five years so that's what info my docs have, where all my logins/apps are, and what I'm familiar with. All that is pretty minor and not a big deal to change, but that's all I've really got. Seems almost all places that take UHC also take Aetna.

    Car Stereo Question

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 01:39 PM PST

I recently got in an accident with a drunk driver and my car is basically totaled. His insurance should be covering it but I'm wondering what I should remove from it before we have them come check it out. It's a 2001 Honda CRV with around $1000 worth of speakers and stereo equipment. Would taking all that out affect how much they'll give me for a new car? Thanks.

Does health insurance cover settled work related injuries?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 01:29 PM PST

I never seem to get a straight answer. I asked my attorney, and he said he's unsure. "I never had anyone come back saying they got in trouble at least." "I think so because of that whole pre existing conditions are now covered."

I called my health insurance company, and the customer service person from India had no idea what I was asking.

When I went with my daughter to sign her up for medi-cal, I even asked the transitional assistance social worker my question, and she didn't know. I don't even think she knew what I was asking.

Then I called the adjuster from WC and she said "I don't really know."

So what the hell is it? Can I use health insurance for further treatment for my injury legally, or will I be thrown in jail and poked with a stick?

I would think this would be a super common thing, but no one seems to know.
