Intel stock plunges 10% after data-center sales drop more than expected

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 02:02 PM PDT

Intel Corp. data-center sales sank more than expected in the third quarter, sending shares down 10% in after-hours trading Thursday.

Intel INTC, +0.74% reported a decline in profit and revenue from the previous year, while slightly raising its full-year forecast but missing expectations for its fourth-quarter sales outlook. Shares dropped to less than $49 in after-hours action immediately following the report, after closing the regular session with a 0.8% gain at $53.90.

The chip maker reported third-quarter net income of $4.3 billion, or $1.02 a share, down more than 28% from $5.99 billion, or $1.35 a share, in the year-ago period. After adjusting for restructuring and acquisition-related costs, Intel reported earnings of $1.11 a share, compared with $1.42 a share in the year-ago quarter. Revenue fell to $18.3 billion from $19.19 billion in the year-ago quarter.

Analysts surveyed by FactSet had estimated adjusted earnings of $1.11 a share on revenue of $18.24 billion, while Intel had forecast adjusted earnings of $1.10 a share on revenue of approximately $18.2 billion.

The company said that it now expects adjusted earnings of $4.90 a share on sales of $75.3 billion, after previously stating $4.85 a share on sales of $75 billion.

New US jobless claims drop to lowest level since March - Financial Times

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 06:17 AM PDT

    https://www.ft.com/content/3323dde1-af89-447f-9b62-cc98d9afe132

Initial applications for unemployment benefits fell to 787,000 last week

New US jobless claims fell to the lowest level since early March last week but remained elevated above 700,000, as the Trump administration and Democrats remained at odds over a broad package of economic aid under two weeks before the presidential election.

Initial applications for unemployment benefits dropped to a seasonally adjusted 787,000, compared with 842,000 in the prior week, the US labour department said on Thursday. The figure was lower than economists' forecast of 860,000 claims.

The federal Pandemic Unemployment Assistance programme, which offers benefits to the self-employed and others who would not qualify for regular benefits, registered 345,440 new claims on an unadjusted basis, up from 337,228.

The number of Americans actively collecting state jobless aid totalled 8.4m in the week that ended on October 10. That continued a positive trend in continuing claims, having dropped from 9.4m in one week and from 12.7m in the span of one month. However, economists have partly attributed the fall to unemployed workers exhausting regular benefits.

The insured unemployment rate, considered an alternative measure of joblessness, dropped to 5.7 per cent from 6.4 per cent.

Treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin and Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic House speaker, have continued stimulus negotiations into this week in a last-ditch attempt to hammer out an agreement before the poll.

Mark Meadows, White House chief of staff, said on Wednesday he was "optimistic" about the talks. "We do share one goal, and that is hopefully to get some kind of deal in the next 48 hours or so," he told Fox Business. He added that funding for state and local governments was the biggest sticking point.

As coronavirus outbreaks in America's south and west this summer faded, hopes for a steadier recovery in the labour market rose after big states including Florida and Texas loosened curbs on businesses.

But health officials have warned that other regions, particularly the Midwest, could be at risk of outbreaks. Wisconsin, where the rate of positive tests has hit highs this month, has emerged as a new virus hotspot. The north-east states of New Jersey and Connecticut have also reported a rise in infections after quelling earlier outbreaks.

Federal Reserve officials have warned that the economy's rebound could sputter without further stimulus from Washington. Republicans in the Senate put forward another $500bn bill this week that would increase unemployment aid, among other measures, but it was blocked by Democrats before reaching a vote. Donald Trump has said he would support a bigger spending plan, while House Democrats have backed a $2.2tn proposal.

The jobless claims report showed that 23.2m people were claiming benefits in all state and federal programmes as of October 3, down from 24.2m, according to unadjusted figures that are reported on a two-week delay.

The US has recovered half of the 22m jobs lost in March and April, bringing the unemployment rate down to 7.9 per cent in September — below its pandemic-era peak of 14.7 per cent.

Basically every living organism is comprised of a DNA code that determines its layout based on 4 'letters' (amino acids ATCG). CRISPR related tech allows you to change, alter or delete certain parts of that code with relative ease. Hopefully you can imagine the consequences of this little fact, being able to be an architect of life itself. If you can't don't worry others have already done it for you.

'PayPal in Talks to Buy Crypto Firms Including BitGo', Paypal Seem to be going deeper on Crypto than first thought.

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 03:39 AM PDT

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-10-22/paypal-said-to-be-in-talks-to-buy-crypto-firms-including-bitgo

PayPal Holdings Inc. is exploring acquisitions of cryptocurrency companies including Bitcoin custodian BitGo Inc., according to people familiar with the matter, a move that would expand its embrace of digital coins.

PayPal has been holding talks with BitGo, a company that helps investors store Bitcoin securely, and could reach a deal within weeks, the people said, asking not to be identified because the matter is private. Talks could still fall apart and PayPal could opt to buy other targets, the people added.

It couldn't be learned how much PayPal would pay for BitGo if it goes ahead with the deal. BitGo raised $58.5 million in 2018 at a $170 million valuation, according to PitchBook.

Representatives for BitGo and PayPal declined to comment.

Palo Alto, California-based BitGo was founded in 2013 by Chief Executive Officer Mike Belshe. It offers digital wallets that require multiple signatures for transactions, as well as offline vaults for storing Bitcoin and rival currencies. It was one of the first companies in the space to focus on institutional investors, according to its website.

The company applied in August to New York regulators to become an independent, regulated qualified custodian under New York State Banking Law, a press release showed. Custodians like BitCoin are responsible for safekeeping digital assets using secure storage.

PayPal announced on Wednesday that its customers can buy, sell and hold cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin, Ether, Bitcoin Cash and Litecoin from digital wallets, as well as use the virtual money to shop at the 26 million merchants on its network. The announcement led Bitcoin to surge past $13,000 for the first time since July 2019.

PayPal said it would partner with BitGo competitor Paxos Trust Company, a regulated provider of cryptocurrency products and services for its new service.

BitGo is backed by investors including Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Craft Ventures, Digital Currency Group, DRW, Galaxy Digital Ventures, Redpoint Ventures, Valor Equity Partners and Founders Fund.

Future Of Oil:The Possibilities Of The Inverese Of Public Perception

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 02:50 AM PDT

Is it not entirely in the realm of possibilities that we do not find an effective substitute for the advantages of oil. That oil becomes more and more valuable as time goes on. As stockpiles dwindle, populations increases, and standards of living increase worldwide.

We all have this faith, this faith that a new technology or goverment megaproject will bring us into a golden age of alternative fuels. I have some food for though.

Do you remember how much influence and pressure the tobacco companies had on public policy?

Tobacco is worth ~800 billion. Oil is worth ~81 trillion

You don't have to image what kind of power oil has. Between 150K/1M people have been shot, burnt and vaporized in Iraq. A war of accepted oil interests.

This was not some desperate attempt by the oil companies to stay alive, it was just a small acquisition of power. Imagine what they are capable of if they were truly in any danger.

I think the rumors of oils demise have been greatly exaggerated.

Is TLT a good long term(lifetime) investment and can someone explain it like I'm 5?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 08:59 PM PDT

So correct me if I'm wrong, but US Government Bonds are a pretty good investment if you hold the idea that Uncle Sam will not default on his debt.

As for TLT, from my research so far, I read about how the price of TLT has a negative correlation with interest rates.

Currently, rates are low and I read JPow said he doesn't plan on rasing rates for two years. So its a good time to buy, correct?

However, if/when The Fed rasies rates, should you still hold or sell?

What happens if/when The Fed decides to set negative rates?

    Thanks in advance

    How are capital gains taxed?

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 03:05 AM PDT

I was under the impression that once a stock is sold within 12 months of purchase, you pay your income tax rate. If sold after 12 months, then a 15% tax rate.

A co-worker is a trader and said that you only pay taxes on your gains if you either move it to your bank or don't reinvest it within 3 months of selling.

Is there any truth to this and maybe provide a source?

    Thanks.

McAfee files for an estimated $2 billion IPO

    https://www.nasdaq.com/articles/lockdown%3A-leading-cybersecurity-brand-mcafee-files-for-an-estimated-%242-billion-ipo-2020-09

Another tech IPO, but this one for an older and more profitable company. Mcafee has been putting more emphasis on its enterprise offerings, though it still has products of its well known (and somewhat maligned) consumer antivirus offerings.

    Gartner ratings: https://www.gartner.com/reviews/market/endpoint-protection-platforms/compare/mcafee

EDIT: Article with more details: https://siliconangle.com/2020/09/29/mcafee-go-public-boosting-revenue-1-4b-first-half-2020/

McAfee is also a force to be reckoned with in the enterprise security market, where it counts 78% of the Fortune 500 and 86% of the Global 2000 as customers.

Using beta in your google spreadsheet portfolio

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 01:27 AM PDT

I am currently using the following function in google spreadsheet:

    =GOOGLEFINANCE(A4;"beta")

Where "A4" is the name of the ticker. This works fine for most individual stocks, but not for ETF's.

So I figured I would update it using yahoo, using the following function for SXLV:

    =ImportXML("https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/SXLV.L?p=SXLV.L", "//*[@id='table1']/tbody/tr[6]/td")

However, it does not seem to work for me. Does anyone have a solution or other idea? It would be greatly appreciated.

What do you guys think about Suncor Energy ($SU)?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 10:32 AM PDT

I personally really like this stock for a few reasons:

    1. They have a "moat". Something that keeps potential competition from popping up. Since they're in the energy business, large amounts of capital are required to start a business like this.

    2. They are expanding into renewable energies. Renewable energy is sort of speculative right now, but it's a good way to cover your bases in case oil becomes less consumed over time.

    3. They are not highly leveraged. Their debt to equity ratio is way lower (below 0.5) than any other energy company and they don't seem to be sacrificing large potential gains by not being so leveraged.

    4. They are trading below book value as of now. While the current stock price per share is currently around $12, the book value per share is a little over $17 per share.

    5. Despite not being highly leveraged, they still manage to pay dividends to shareholders (currently 5.47%).

There are some other reasons why I like this stock, but I wanted to see what other people have to say about it. I ended up buying at around $12/share so I might be a little biased on my reasons for liking it.

Added return from lending securities in your portfolio?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 06:20 PM PDT

    Hi!

I'm trying to quantify how much added return can be generated by loaning out securities. I know some securities are harder to borrow so have higher rates but am wondering if there are any studies that you know of that have been done at the index level? Say SP500 returns that could be made if you lent out all securities?

Their AWS services $$ looks strong and their Whole foods/Prime Pickup is up. Now, Covid is around the whole US, which I would think increases reliance on AMZN. What to you think? GLD- 2.9%

    Marginal Swing Trading Cash: 3.9%

I'll add about 500-1k every month to this. I realize I probably need to have a little more mid and small cap exposure, maybe 10% each? I also need a little more foreign but I don't really like the returns of the last 30 years from int'l, so I think I'll keep at 5%. I realize VOO and VTI overlap a lot but I figure it adds diversification. I also realize all those blue chips are in VOO and VTI but I want to add more growth so I'm adding the individual stock picks to try to "beat the market" a little. Let me know what you think and what you would tweak! Thanks!!

    Need some tips

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 11:16 PM PDT

    Hello

I'm relatively new to investing in stocks. I have a small competition coming up among a group and was wondering if anyone could have any tips on building my portfolio of $10,000 of fake money as big as possible in the period of 3 weeks. Plus every working day we get $1000 extra money added to our accounts to invest.

I know I should just do my own research as I have been doing, but maybe someone can give me a head start as what direction should I take and what should I focus on. Mainly focus on 3-5 stocks or rather spread the portfolio out more?

The stocks that are available for us are only S&P 500 stocks (+TSLA, MRNA, SNOW and BABA).

    Thanks in advance!

    Financial planners and political bias

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 04:52 PM PDT

Not a political post, but one about bias.

I went with my Mom to a meeting with her Financial Planner at a well-regarded institution. My Mom uses this advisor for all sorts of things like estate planning, income management, insurance, tying up my Dad's estate, and so on, so I think the services are worth the fee for her. He's made her consistent money.

Anyhoo, we got to talking about upheavals in the next month or so and the FP was not worried at all. In fact, he is pretty convinced that a Covid-19 vaccine is coming out in the next month or so. Now, outside of politics, based on everything I have read and the doctors I have spoken with, this is just not going to happen.

The FP also made other statements about the stimulus that, again, run contrary to everything I've read. To gloss, he's beyond hopeful for a stimulus package getting through before the next Presidential term and is in no way anxious about the fall-out from a stalled deal between the House/The White House or any other bullshit politicking from the Senate.

I understand that probably a lot of people in this industry are conservative. I also know I probably don't want to talk politics with my doctor, much less my barber. I also understand that you're not supposed to change your holdings based on how the wind blows and that it's nigh impossible to time the market. I am a liberal, yes, but I have not been opposed to holding energy or gun stocks in the past. The goal is, as always, to make money.

But this got me curious: is there any data or are there any studies/articles about the political leanings of financial advisors and how they impact client portfolios/holdings?

Could it ever become a self-fulfilling prophecy? Could people with firm political convictions not know how to make money when the other party is in control of the govt? As a bad example... are there people who are just holding out on oil during a liberal president and getting frustrated about it, instead of just investing in greener tech opportunities?

I know there are contradictions in party-mission and performance. I know gun sales went through the roof during Obama. But I'm just wondering... is there any data that discuses whether political philosophy affects investing philosophy, which then affects performance, which then confirms political philosophy?
