After 600+ messages from r/Entrepreneur members giving me feedback on my free "look up any company's suppliers" tool, ImportYeti, I've made 100+ changes based off those messages and am happy to announce ImportYeti Beta V2.0

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 07:49 AM PDT

You can find the original post here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Entrepreneur/comments/hvfgm1/after_the_support_rentrepreneur_showed_for_my/

You can find the tool via Google now : )

For those of you who missed the first post, ImportYeti searches 70,000,000 public bill of ladings to help you find the right supplier. You can answer questions like:

    • Who makes Bass Pro Shop's 4 Burner Gas Griddle? Answer: NINGBO HUIGE OUTDOOR PRODUCTS
    • I thinking of buying barbells from a company I found on Alibaba called Nantong Leeton Fitness Co., the #1 ranking company on Alibaba for the term "barbell". Is Nantong Leeton Fitness Co. the right supplier? Answer: No. They are a big company but primarily sell resistance bands & foam rollers. They are likely outsourcing their heavy metal work creating a more costly product for you and you're more likely to have quality issues as well.
    • Who are the top companies & suppliers who import/export under HS Code 42.02.92 -- trunks & suitcases?
    • Who are the top companies & suppliers who import/export under HS Code 42.02.92 out of Indonesia?

I want to thank the 600+ redditors from r/Entrepreneur who gave feedback on ImportYeti. It made a crazy difference. It really helped me understand how people actually use the tool and what needed to change about it. I added every major(but still possible) request that was mentioned during our closed beta test including hs-code/hts-code functionality(I'm really interested in feedback on this in particular), various search filters, address search (so you can try to find companies importing under different names), did multiple passes de-duping the company names (still needs some work, but a lot better), completely rewrote our search algorithm and fixed 100+ bugs & usability issues.

Even though I'm allowing puiblc access this time, I'd still love any and all feedback (love or hate)... no matter how brutal : ) I only want to create things that people really love. If you enjoyed this tool, have any ideas for how to improve it, or found a bug/usability issue, I want to hear from you. Please PM me or comment below anytime

I never imagined I would be this unsuccessful, seriously

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 09:24 AM PDT

I wasn't from a rich family. I had average grades in school. I was never the top 1% at anything I ever did.

I look back at my naive self 5 years ago.

Honestly, it's hard to pinpoint to one thing. It's more of a combination of various factors. Here's the breakdown:

    1) Started with a Full Service Digital Agency thinking with the knowledge i have i will conquer in SHORT TIME the industry in my city. It didn't happen.

    2) Left the company where i worked before and had a full time job too early, with no clients and with a very small amount saved as i thought with my Agency i will be quick to make revenue. Bad idea, as it took me almost 3 month to make my first sale and the saved money started to vanish.

    3) I did some research before starting the company but only after 4-6 months after i started with the Agency i started to realise my competitors were involved in most of the companies in our region. That's why i had no big company as client and only small businesses where you are doing basically the work for pennies and with the stress not get payed on time.

    4) I was the main salesman for my Agency, yes i knew i was not the best but had no money to pay another salesman salary.

    5) Perhaps because of my own ego or to not be labelled as a loser i kept the Agency for too long instead i should close it already after 1 Year max.

I thought i will share my failure story here because many here just tell about her successful story without any context and no real advice.

To end it with a positive message, even with some debts left due to many bad decisions i made, i am still young and i know one day i will make it and all this experience i had with my business in the past will help me (hopefully) make better decisions for my next business.

Good luck to everyone here for their journey!

I never imagined I would be this successful, seriously

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 10:59 PM PDT

I wasn't from a rich family. I had average grades in school. I was never the top 1% at anything I ever did. No one, friends or family, thought I would be the founder and CEO of a successful multi million dollar start up.

I look back at my naive self 5 years ago. What was it that made me successful? What is the secret formula?

Honestly, it's hard to pinpoint to one thing. It's more of a combination of various factors. Here's the breakdown:

    1) desperation / hunger / drive - failure was not an option for me. I quit my day job before I founded my company, so I knew I had to make it work because I vowed that I will never go back to working for someone else.

    2) hard work - Find something you can be excited to wake up to every morning. I was passionate about my work, I lived and breathed it, it didn't feel like work to me.

    3) Discipline - how many years can you endure this? Building a successful business is not easy, in fact, it gets harder as you grow bigger. Mo money, mo problems. For reals.

    4) optimism - shit is gonna go wrong, eventually. Can you stay positive no matter what happens?Watch silicone valley and it's pretty much spot on. Roller coaster ride of your life.

    5) luck - Im grateful for being at the right place, right time, meeting the right people, entering the right market with the right product.

Being a successful entrepreneur is not easy. The odds aren't in your favor, I'm not gonna lie. But if you don't at least try, you will never have a chance to succeed. My biggest fear in life is not failure, but regret that I didn't give it my best shot.

This life isn't for everyone, but with the right person with the right mentality, you too can accomplish everything I have and more. It sounds so cliche but if I can do this, seriously, a lot of the people in this group can too. It's all in your head. You gotta believe it because life is a self fulfilling prophecy.

Good luck to everyone here who's trying to make it! You're already one step ahead of rest of the world.

I got shit on after posting my 1.5 year business update.

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 12:52 AM PDT

"Scammer" "Fan fiction" "Shitty post" "No 21 year old is leaving an $80k/year job"

I'd be lying if I say I wasn't affected by it, I deleted the post as soon as I saw the top comments. I had just woken up and couldn't be bothered to justify myself to the people who didn't believe me - which I regret deleting now.

The reason why I'm making this post is to share my story again.

Yes, I'm happy to provide any proof to mods for post verification and yes, I can elaborate more in my post and comments as required.

I believe the ability to stay afloat in negativity is important for any entrepreneur so I don't want to back down just because a few internet strangers were quick to criticize without taking the time to understand first.

I want to be able to look back on this post, the same way I can look back on my old postwhen I had just resigned.

I'm here to share my story, provide value, and inspire others in the community - a community of which I've been apart of for years.

    MY STORY:

I was diagnosed with a random heart infection (viral myocarditis) after nearly passing away at 21 years old. The time spent in the hospital really opened my eyes about life and I realized I was living a life smaller than the life I was capable of living.

So, just over a year ago (~14 months) I quit my $80k/year job as an Account Executive (outside sales) at a tech firm to start a web design and marketing agency from scratch at 21 years old to seek autonomy, mastery and purpose in my professional life. (fyi: I say 1.5 years in my post title instead of saying 1.16 years)

Yes, I was making $80k/year at 21, my base salary alone was $60k/year and the rest is all commission. I went to a technical institute to study marketing management & professional sales where I was an active member of marketing clubs, competed in business competitions and graduated with an excellence award. I busted my ass and got an awesome job but nobody asked me how I did this but rather jumped to saying I was liar for having an $80k/year job in my previous post.

    Anyways -

What had started off as a "one man show" with my agency quickly grew to an award-winning business with an incredible team of 7 industry professionals (I met two of them on Reddit!).

Here are some highlights over the past 14 months:

Month 4: We worked with a Ferrari & Maserati dealership.

Some were skeptical in my last post on how I achieved this - I DM'd the dealership on Instagram, cold called, emailed and added the marketing manager on LinkedIn.

I offered my service for free with the condition that I could use their logo and say I've worked with them since I was just starting out. By the time I was done they wanted to hire me and offered to write me a review to build my social proof.

Month 6: We expanded operations to the USA with the signing of our first national contract. (One of the only times in my life I've cried of genuine happiness - I was ridiculed in my last post for sharing this)

Month 10: We had our best case study yet for an e-commerce client with a +3,000% Return on Ad Spend (30x ROAS).

(Updated: We now have a client with a 75x ROAS - custom home builder - 20k on ads to $1.5mil in revenue.)

Month 11: Signed a celebrity investor (think Shark Tank) and two of their ventures.

One of my Account Managers brought in this client from a simple cold call to the cousin of a guy who was on the show and partnered with one of the investors. Complete fluke of a referral and cold call but they ended up loving our proposal so we brought them on board.

Month 13: Signed our largest client yet - $300k/mo ad spend for the holiday season. They put out a job posting for a specialist, I applied as an agency by email with a formal proposal and they accepted it.

One small victory at a time. Feel free to ask me about my losses!

I learned a ton this past year and plan to continue learning. I live by the saying "if you are the smartest person In the room, you are in the wrong room."

I am fulfilling the autonomy, mastery and purpose I was seeking a year ago when I quit my old job and it feels amazing.

Thanks to everyone who believed me in my first update post and for my first ever Reddit awards. I'll leave this post up this time around but for now, I'm off to bed.

Cheers to the exciting years ahead!

My Journey to success, a reminder that everything comes at a cost

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 09:04 AM PDT

Long post alert, you've been warned.

Background: I'm a medical professional in an in-demand field. Low six-figure job which I love. But the politics, hours, and stressors are not congruent with the pay or respect.

    Chapter 1: The side hustle

It all started in 2018 when I opened my company as a side-hustle, meant to make some extra side income. I didn't expect much- maybe an extra $20-30,000 per year once it matured in a few years. I opened the business and mostly put it on the back burner immediately. Gone but not forgotten

    Chapter 2: The firing

I'm a passionate person. I had a clash with one of my arrogant co-workers. I felt they were harming a patient with substandard care and spoke up. Not a great idea to speak up to people who run hospitals. Oh well. I get "soft" fired - work from home for a while until a pre-arranged "quit date".

I'm crushed. I love what I do. I care. I put it all out there every day. But at the end of the day it's all political and it is what it is. I'm done here.

    Chapter 3: Building the bones

With this new-found time I decided to put some more time into the company (and I took on another job teaching online). I was able to build the bones of my business over about 6 months. Talk about excited!?

12 hour days didn't phase me. I was all-in and excited to get it off the ground. Pretty soon we were making a few thousand dollars per month and I was thrilled!

    Chapter 4: The offer

Working away one day my phone rings. A random guy offering to buy my business. Must be a scam. Anyway, I hear him out.

Turns out it wasn't a scam. I was being offered about 5 years salary and a cushy position in exchange for selling the company. I felt like I was living in a movie. I developed a relationship with the purchasers and everything was in place. We were about to set a closing date, when....

    Chapter 5: The Lawsuit

A lawsuit!!?? Apparently one of our competitors felt they had adequate cause to sue. I am in shock.

I vividly remember going to the ATM three days in a row and maxing out my credit card cash advance to afford a lawyer. 12k retainers ain't cheap and I didn't have it sitting around. Fierce words and threats were exchanged. It seemed every week they made a new (ridiculous) claim about me. I was at a loss.

Ultimately the comments they made about us killed the deal. My wife and I were devastated. We were looking at paying off our house, student loans, credit cards, and moving into a very-well paying position. We had made plans of what we'd do with the money and how we'd enjoy our newfound freedom. All gone - the deal crushed. Now I am stuck with an expensive lawsuit. The average monthly legal bills were over 6k. with some months being higher. Weekly calls to discuss the crazy claims being made. Instant headaches when I saw my lawyer's phone number...

    Chapter 6: The break

Life really took a downturn. The lawsuit raged on and my mental health had taken a beating. I stressed every month about how I'd pay for the legal fees. My wife stressed. My marriage suffered.

To make matters worse, our business took a nosedive with COVID. I tried to get employment but was not black-listed in all hospitals due to my previous dispute. Job after job I was passed up, sometimes spending months interviewing and preparing to start the job, but always the same. "We've heard you had a previous dispute and we don't want that kind of thing here"

    Crushed.

The straw that broke the camel's back? One of my contractors ripped me off for about $6,000. I remember feeling so overwhelmed and profoundly sad. I laid in my bed and hit a new low.

This is when the mental health issues started. Nightly nightmares and night terrors. Every day seemed like a new hell. I dreaded going to sleep- waking up in a cold sweat was a good night.

I dreaded being awake. My wife found me insufferable (rightly so). I was completely unable to relax and felt a sadness so profound it shook me to my core. Everything seemed bleak and futile. My marriage was on the ropes. The company suing us threatened to ruin me personally and take everything I had. I can't explain what it does to you when someone says that.

I had been low before, but this time I was at rock bottom.

Chapter 7: A new day rising

I prayed (I'm deeply religious). I pleaded with God- don't let this be my life. What have I done to deserve this? I was confused.

Then it all came together, like some kind of grand scheme.

Within a 6 week period we:

-Struck a major deal which allowed me to quit all other work and focus entirely on the business.

    -Settled the lawsuit.

-Found an excellent group of contractors who I can depend on for anything.

-Hired an employee which grew the company exponentially.

-I started antidepressants and began prioritizing my mental health by exercising, taking weekends off, and spending more quality time with my family (kids) and friends.

And just like that my life turned around. I've when from absolute rock bottom to a very great place in about 2 months. I thank God (almost) every day and cannot emphasize how blessed and lucky I am.

I wanted to share my story to give all of you some hope. Life can be tough. No, actually it can downright kick your ass. But it CAN get better. There is hope and sometimes you have to hit rock bottom in order to appreciate the highs.

Life is sweeter now that it has ever been for me. Every day I'm in awe of my new lease on life. There is hope. Optimism. Peace. Satisfaction. Joy. Rest lol.

    Hang in there.

My team validates business ideas using Reddit. With 1.5B visits, it's fast and accurate. All you need is a plan and 3 hours of time. Here is how to get started

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 10:47 AM PDT

With this approach, we launched 5 projects, including a "cash cow" Email Verification Add-on and a micro-saas Silent Inbox.

I believe this is the simplest and cheapest approach available on the market. Reddit receives 11 billion page views a month [1]. A lot of opportunities for unbundling and audience building as you can see.

Here is how I research subreddits and evaluate them for ideas validation.

    1. When I have an idea to validate I write down at least 5 keywords related to it. Example terms I used last week: "meditation", "breathwork", "breathing technique", "anxiety", "stress". Enter one keyword at a time into the search bar and it will give you a list of subreddits where your keyword is mentioned.

    2. Find at least 5 subreddits with people who discussed your topic. Make a copy of my spreadsheet [2]. And collect information about the number of readers. Pro tip: don't waste your time on subreddits with less than 10K readers.

    3. Go to Related Subreddits by User Overlap [3]. You need to check every subreddit you found by searching your terms to get more ideas on when your potential audience is hanging out.

    4. Read posts within each subreddit to see if people might be interested in your project. Add subjective relevance to the spreadsheet, where 10 is for super relevant subreddit.

    5. Once all numbers are added to the spreadsheet, sort your list of subreddits based on the Score it calculates for you.

Congrats, now you are ready to pick the most relevant subreddits, plan content, write a title, research the best time to post, etc.

If you're keen to learn more about the topic, check my guide on validating project ideas using Reddit.

Journalist looking for information and leads on fake gurus in COVID-19

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 06:43 AM PDT

    Hello r/Entrepreneur!

My name is Ed Prideaux and I'm a UK-based journalist (VICE, BBC, FT, Guardian, Independent, Spectator, etc.). I'm interested in writing an article about how scammers are using the internet - and especially social media - to recruit new bait amid the financial stresses of COVID-19.

One area I want to explore is the world of fake gurus, business 'mentors', e-commerce bullshitters etc. that you often see advertised all over Instagram. I'm looking for tips, potential leads, and things to read and check out. Please share anything and everything you think I should see, and especially if it's connected to COVID-19 and the economic slowdown.

Ideally, I'd also like to source some testimonies from people in the sub-reddit who were recently scammed. As above, I'm especially interested in hearing from those who were targeted and fell for a scam because of financial hardship triggered by the global recession. For testimonies, everything would be anonymous on request. If you want to help, feel free to PM me or leave a comment, and I'll PM you.

    Thanks -

    Ed

How Do I Start A Buisness With ZERO Start-Up Capital?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 02:12 PM PDT

I want to start a Medical Billing/Electronic Medical Records (website). The goal of the site would be to simplify the billing/coding process for medical professionals/small buisness by clearly negotiating between insurance companies and assisting them in getting a better payout for services. The company website would also assist with medical records, scheduling, and office organization. I have no coding experience and I don't want to go to college. I am willing to learn the basics of coding. My goals: 1. Create a company and retain 'founder' status. Meaning I don't want to share all my assets with stakeholders and lose control of the company vision. (I want to be the puppeteer) 2. Have enough startup capital that I can begin the design process of the website. 3. Find a team/cofounder willing to create with me. I have a solid idea and I am writing it down to bring it to life. The only thing is I don't know how. I've read a few books and they've said that the fear someone will steal your idea is irrational, but how can I ensure that this doesn't happen? What are the legal ramifications? Any help appreciated! :)

    Question about switching businesses

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 01:33 PM PDT

Hello, I'm interested in starting a wedding planning business. I don't have any formal experience in this but will be shadowing one to learn. My situation feels complicated but I may be overthinking it.

I will be moving across the country with my fiancé while he goes to school. We will be there for 2.5 years and then return back to our home state to get married and reside.

I'm not sure what the best way to go is because I don't want to wait 3 years (2.5 for him to go to school and then a few months to finish up our own wedding planning) to start a business. Would it be a feasible plan to start an event planning business in the temporary state and plan small events while I learn the ropes (children's birthday parties, spa nights, etc., covid permitting of course), and then use that same website and change it into a wedding planning business once we get back to our home state?

I'm very new to all of this and I'm not sure if I'm overthinking or under-thinking this! Thank you in advance!

Best database style no-code app builder?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 01:00 PM PDT

I am a time management author, speaker and coach who has identified several productivity apps that I think the market would like that are currently lacking.

I am not a programmer and not interested in learning programming. I am very familiar with content management systems like WordPress and use a lot of different software so I learn software quickly.

While I will likely hire or partner with a programmer to create the final app, I thought it could be useful for me to prototype the app myself and get many of the interface ideas worked out before I work with a programmer.

I have looked at some of the "no-code" app builders out there. Many of them look primarily like they are really just to set up responsive websites and are not really built to have a database core.

Are there any great database-driven no-code app builders you would recommend? I am an experienced Notion user and could certainly prototype it there, but I was hoping for a nicer interface than Notion tables.

My Company's List of Physical Tools/Hardware

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 12:55 PM PDT

Hi Reddit, my previous post listing all the useful free software tools I use for my sporting goods design startup seemed to be helpful, so I wanted to make a similar list of the physical hardware/tools that I purchased and believe to be valuable for my business. I worked in industry as a mechanical engineer for several years before starting my business, so a lot of these tools are engineering-related.

    1. FDM 3D printer ($330)
    2. Resin (MSLA) 3D printer and ($300)
    3. Engraving/lightweight CNC machine ($250)
    4. Embroidary/Sewing machine ($370)
    5. Soldering and reflow station ($80)
    6. Soldering "helping hands" ($25)
    7. Electric hot plate ($15)
    8. Photography light box ($27)
    9. Electric smoker (for powder coating) ($175)
    10. Air compressor ($80)
    11. Drill press ($105)
    12. Miniature scale ($13)
    13. Hanging scale ($10)

I'd be happy to answer any questions about how these tools are used/applied in my business.

What are best practices for re-engineering your mindset & schedule away from the traditional 9-5 workweek towards a lifestyle schedule and mindset that works best for you and your business?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 12:26 PM PDT

This is something I have been thinking about a lot lately and I imagine I am not the only entrepreneur who faces this dilemma in their business and personal life.

To explain what I'm talking about:

I run E-commerce businesses and would call myself a successful entrepreneur to the point where I'm my own boss, I make my own schedule, and I can live life on my own terms. Even though I know all of that, I still feel mentally trapped in the traditional 9-5 work schedule and I'm seeking out ways to re-engineer that mindset so that I can make the most out of my business and life, and really take advantage of that freedom.

For example if it's a weekday morning and the businesses are running smoothly there should be nothing stopping me from going to do an activity I want to do for a few hours. That being said I find it very hard to actually go ahead and do that without feeling a level of guilt or anxiety because I'm not working during "working hours".

The inverse of this is true as well where I don't feel I am as productive as I could be on the weekends because Saturday and Sunday are traditionally not "work days".

(This is not to say that I never work on the weekend nor that I am strictly in my office from 9-5 every weekday.)

What I am trying to say is that I am looking for ways to remove the mental conditioning that came with years of being a part of that system and to metaphorically remove the remaining invisible chains that it still has over me.

Any insight or perspective is greatly appreciated. Have a great day!

Just started to finally see success after months of hard work, then my FB ads account gets disabled.

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 10:54 PM PDT

Does anyone have any advice on how i can get my FB ads account back?

Yesterday i got my ad account disabled for a policy violation (Not sure which policy) but i have an idea its an ad we had running previously for page likes, which asked in the ad for people to like the page.

This is a first time violation for us and have submitted it for review first thing after speaking to support yesterday. Would anyone have any advice in getting our account back as soon as possible?

Our business survives off of facebook/instagram ads and if we are to have a months down time we will lose all the progress we have. This is obviously extremely stressful.

Any help from someone who has been through this before would be a huge help! Thanks.

    UPDATE

I recommend anyone to follow these steps if this happens to you.

    1. Do the facebook blueprint course they recommended

    2. Once completed screenshot the certificate sticker

    3. Send to facebook in the support inbox and explain that after completing the course you can see what you may have done wrong, promise not to violate any policy's ever again.

    4. Wait 10-30minutes, problem solved!

This was causing us huge worry and stress so i help this helps some of you guys out there!

Do any of you do taxes?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 12:19 PM PDT

Do any of you strictly do just taxes? I'm looking into everything for it but wondering if it's only profitable from January-April or would it be viable year round? I'm getting my accounting degree currently and I'm half way thru studying for the EA testing. Just wondering if I'll need to add other stuff.

I'm American if that changes anything.

I’m trying to build a brand. Everyone tells me that my products are beautiful. I’m competitively priced for my niche, but I’ve only had one sale. Why?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 12:03 PM PDT

    This is my website: www.ecocaseusa.com.

I have over 1k followers on social media.

Do I just need to be patient? The sales will come after a few months of advertising and getting my SEO right?

I just don't know if I should be patient, or if I need to find a new product that is less saturated.

I'm disabled and want to get into copywriting. Whats the best way to learn proper grammar?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 11:28 AM PDT

Hi! I'm 27 and disabled. I really want to get into copywriting. Not half assed but legit get good at copywriting. Like dedicate my whole life to one thing. I know it'll take years to get good at copywriting, but its way better than sleeping all day. I want to learn proper grammar first and revisit it because it's been a long time since I was in high school English class.

    Insurance for a large order

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 11:02 AM PDT

I have had by biggest order by far come through, over 100k CAD. The customer is paying N30 so we need to cover the cost upfront. We have never had an order close to this size and want to make sure I don't get screwed if they don't pay.

What would be the best way of insuring or covering my ass in case things go sideways?
