Any tips on saving money during loan repayment?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 02:56 PM PDT

Hey all, do any of you guys know if there is any way to save money when making student loan repayments. For example credit cards will usually give 2% back on purchases. I know you can't use a credit card for student loans, but is there anything similar offered by banks?

Taking out a lower interest federal loan to pay off a higher interest federal loan?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 10:20 PM PDT

    Hi all,

Apologies if this has already been asked but I can't find anything about it. I currently have roughly 20k in direct loans, 9k is subsidized at a 4.5% interest rate and 11k is unsubsidized at a 4.5% interest rate. The current interest rate for unsubsidized loans is 2.75% along with a 1.059% loan fee. My school allows me to take out unsubsidized loans up to 5k.

Is it a no brainer to take out 5k in unsubsidized loans then use it to pay off some of the 11k I currently have at the 4.5% rate after the interest free period ends? Even with the loan fee I would still be saving money.

I realize it makes sense but am I missing anything or am I at risk for anything by doing this? Or is there a better refinance option out there? I graduate June 2021 so my repayment period would start December 2021. Thanks in advance!

    Refinance Recommendation

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 05:03 PM PDT

I recently refinanced several student loans. There is one loan that I still would like to refinance to lower the interest rate. (private loan just under $5,000, 12% APR) I am having a difficult time finding a lender due to it being under $5,000 with no degree. I did not graduate nor intend to. Excellent credit. Anyone have a recommendation for a lender that does refinancing for a loan under these requirements? Or other options if they are available?

Why do students live on campus when off campus seems MUCH cheaper?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 02:24 AM PDT

I am very ignorant on the subject so the question is genuine as I realize my logic is probably flawed

At Rutgers university, the cost of an academic years worth of boarding can range from 8k to 13k

Looking at apartments near Rutgers, if you were to get a roommate, you can live in a MUCH more spacious area for either the same price if not less

    What's up with this?

Do you think rates are going to drop more in the near future? I'm thinking of refinancing my student loans for the 1st time

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 10:34 AM PDT

Currently i make 100k a year and do not qualify for income based program. My loans range from 6.55% - 3.45 and have 40k left. They All government loans (mixture of sub and unsub) by nelnet, navient and UC.

I should have looked into refinancing sooner in my career but was hoping one day there would be some loan forgiveness program but that never happened. Due to covid my loans are currently in deferred program and no interest until January 2021

My question is would now be a good time to refinance and shop around, do you guys think the rate will drop even more in the future and any tips or suggestions?

Student Loans while in Grad School Abroad

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 12:16 PM PDT

I may be traveling to NZ for a masters program next year and I'm figuring up my expenses. I might end up having a $0 payment regardless because my income will be very low if any, but will my loans be put into an automatic grace period again because of my student status?

Also, yes I understand that I have to keep paying my student loans even if I live abroad :) I just won't be able to work much while in school and I want to be sure I can afford to do it.

Don’t know what to do with my maintenance loan... help

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 10:25 AM PDT

So I applied for my maintenance loan with the maximum amount of £3,410. But I got my parents income completely wrong as it's actually a lot lower than I thought. So I've printed off the form to change it which I'm going to fill in and send off to student finance England with the right income. Only problem is my course starts in two days and there's something I'm not quite sure about. Do I need to cancel the £3,410 loan and take the late corrected payment. Or will they just rectify it for me once they've processed the paperwork? Thanks for your help in advance guys👍

Can my nonAmerican parent assume the obligations under my federal loans?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 06:00 AM PDT

They offered to have it in their name and pay it off. However, they aren't a resident or citizen of America. Is it possible for them to be named on the federal loans website instead, or in the alternative, can they refinance in their name?

Why isn’t it still applied not our fault...

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 04:24 AM PDT

So it's not our fault this covid thing happened. I had my taxes offset and I was like ok mad but I owed it and happy it was finally almost paid off only owed 1150 left. Now this pandemic happens and I'm sent back my money unwillingly and of course like everyone else I needed it. At the time but you know the saying out of sight out of mind so I chopped it up as a loss. But how can I send them the cash back after I get it in hand and we in a crisis now I'm back in debt. Wtf!!! It's not right that should be written off for those who this has happened to we didn't ask for it. They just did it. So now when this is over we have to suffer and go thru more debt next year. Not cool.
