How do small businesses afford free shipping?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 09:48 PM PDT

I googled about this and as I understand small businesses usually include the cost of shipping in the product price. But suppose we have a product with 10$ price. And then we add shipping and packaging to it which approximately becomes (say) 30$. Now my question is why would people buy a product for 30$ online when they get it for 10$ in local market?

I am very new to business and I want to start selling online, so any help is appreciated. Thanks.

How do I negotiate with a supplier when I’ve not started a business (yet)

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 12:01 AM PDT

Hi. I found a tech product that I think will sell very well. I own one of those products and know they work and have a strong fan-base.

I saw adverts on the supplier's (China) website calling for new distributors. After making contact they said the MOQ is 30 pcs (about £6k worth).

They also asked 'what is your main business? Could you tell me more your company details and selling channels'.

At the moment I have no business but I'm interested in working with these guys. How can i salvage this conversation?

I was meant to give a 60 minute presentation for an interview for a head of growth role at a startup, then Covid happened so I never got to give it. So I'm going to do 6 little blogs on the slides I would have presented and publish them here as not to waste the time I put in. This is 1/6 - Intro.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 05:58 AM PDT

This was a 60 minute presentation that I was going to have to give as a final round for a head of growth role before Covid happened and I never got to give it, I really don't want it to go to waste.

It comprises a few key parts, and despite the slight romanticising of a 'growth hacker' role over the last couple of years, it's anything but a telenovela. These were the slides.

    1. Intro
    2. Data friendliness
    3. Manufacturing creativity
    4. Diversifying growth
    5. Mission evangelism
    6. Rate limiting steps

I am a growth hacker, but I think it may have also changed slightly since Sean Ellis made the differentiation in 2010 between marketer and growth hacker: Sean coined the term when he couldn't find anyone to replace the work he was doing as a marketing consultant at this time, issuing the need for a new job specification altogether.

This would have been my introduction, simply highlighting a few key areas that would make for a fantastic environment for a growth lead to come in.

Firstly, growth is still true north

If retention suffers, if the brand is dragged through the mud, if the campaigns starts to open a wormhole into a universe with giant eye-eating monsters; that simply isn't the growth hacker's problem. As a blinkered horse charges, as a berserker cleaves heads; one is not to reason why, one is but to grow or die.

In the most simple of terms, any job that does not involve THE number going up, is not the responsibility of the growth team.

Secondly, have a North Star Metric

This is THE thing you can base your company's success on. Defining this will help a growth manager remain streamlined in their work. It will also encourage absolute transparency and efficiency with work. 'How does the work you are currently undertaking help us achieve our goal?'

If you haven't worked it out yet, do it now.

Thirdly, understand the simple sum behind growth.

UX + Product + Marketing = Customer Advocacy.

Advocacy + Growth Marketing = Successful growth

This is simple. If the product does not have a gradual upwards trend organically, then do not expect a growth marketer to come in and fix this. Growth hacking is a way of making as many eyes and ears as possible see the product for what it is, it is not tilting what the product is in order for it to be more appealing to the audience.

I have had to do the latter, it ends poorly.

    Finally, good ideas are systematised.

Sitting around waiting for awesome things to happen is like waiting for lightning to strike on a summer's day. As a company, create processes that drive creativity and free thinking.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I will publish the first blog tomorrow regarding data friendliness. I couldn't think of a better way to explain it. It essentially means becoming incredibly knowledgeable about the processes and percentages that lead to a conversion, across the whole marketing effort.

Feel free to ask me questions along the way, it's going to be a cathartic journey.

Creating a Startup at a Young Age

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 01:26 AM PDT

Hello everyone, I'm 17 and have an idea that I feel very confident in, but then again, I'm 17 so I'm brand new to this. The base of it requires me to build a website (that can't be built on a free website builder due to its nature) so I'm already looking at a significant amount of money to put in. I don't have any friends who are interested or capable either, so I have no idea where to go to potentially find partners, mentors, or investors. Any help or advice is appreciated.

You just launched an app and already have partnerships, but no funding. How do you start generating some serious publicity and media coverage on a minimal budget?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 07:07 PM PDT

Basically, if just launched a mobile app technology startup and already have some partnerships in place, but no real funding to support advertising, marketing, publicity and all of that, then how would you recommend to start generating some serious publicity and media coverage on a minimal budget? By funding, I mean there's no significant funding via an accelerator, angel investor, fund, or VC group. It is primarily bootstrapped and funded by the founders of the startup itself.

Please let me know - thanks!

How can we find beta testers for our app?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 03:10 PM PDT

    Hi everyone!

Our app releases its beta test this month and we are looking for more beta testers. So far we have about 100 but we're still looking for more but don't have many funds available since we're just starting out. How can we find beta testers beyond friends and family? Do you all have any tips?

I need some legal advice for my start up. How do I know what type of lawyer I need?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 04:48 PM PDT

I am starting an online business, that mostly entails clients that are in the US and Canada. I suppose the company would be international? I don't know what all registration, taxes and legal documentation is required. I'm thinking of basing the company out of Estonia-although clients would be from other countries. What kind of lawyer would I need? Also, any suggestions for a reliable place that I can find a good lawyer to give me advice?

Leaving comfortable job to start business

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 12:11 PM PDT

I am leaving my job and moving to a different continent/country to start a business. My next steps are to incorporate the company, raise pre seed and seed money so I can afford hiring my tech cofounders full time. And also to build our MSP.

If you are an entrepreneur too, what advice would you give to me?

    Hesitating about launching ecommerce

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 12:18 PM PDT

My friend's mother has business as a retailer. She sells clothes, but due to pandemic, she has difficulty with selling products. Most of her products are becoming inventory. Me and my friend came with an idea of developing website on wordpress to help to sell. However, what I'm concerned about is that should website be developed or is it better to use Instagram or Telegram since it is a small business.

In nutshell: Which one is preferable for small retail business to sell products online website or Instagram/Telegram?

MVP built, feedback coming in, have a disagreement with my co-founder that I'd like to receive a third perspective in

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 11:16 AM PDT

Background: Our MVP launched in a sort of closed beta, in our discord server we gathered for testers, purpose for this being so we can smooth over any big problems people notice right away before we push it out to people fully.

We're past this stage. We know what is wrong. And mainly it has a lot to do with the front end presentation of the webapp. It's just not good and we both know that in order to get people to keep using the application somewhat, the major flaws have to be addressed.

This is where our disagreement comes in

My partner says we need to focus on getting as many people on the thing right NOW. He says the purpose is for feedback. I get this, but at the same time, we haven't even begun to address the flaws on the front end. And out of the people we have registered for closed beta, the front end was the complaint most people had

Before I push it out to more people, I thought we should make an effort to address this, and THEN start actively looking for more people who can give us feedback that is new to us, instead of the same old same old front end stuff.

I am pretty torn myself, but I think the basic thing to do would be to address current feedback, and THEN actively look for new members. However, like i said, partner says we need our priority to be on gaining new people right now and getting them to register, even if they don't come back to use it

Not sure. What do you guys think

Where do I start with the technical aspect of creating online software? Details below.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 10:22 AM PDT

I have an idea for a health-focused eLearning online software. I have zero technical background. I am fairly confident about the business & health pieces - conducting needs analyses, creating the content, marketing, analyzing results, etc.

I will use a professional(s) for the graphic design & tech pieces. Graphics + an intuitive, fun experience are just as important as the content. Where would I even start with these pieces? I'm starting from ground zero, so any other advice on licensing, pay arrangements, website maintenance, hiring a company vs. hiring an individual, etc. is welcome!

How do I take on investors?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 09:30 AM PDT

I came up with a business idea which is not unusual but this particular idea I identified as having the potential to make much more than any small business I had taken on in the past.

I've decided to invest in myself and go for it. Today I will be signing a lease on the first unit. I anticipate growing this business by one or two units per month as long as all goes as planned. But if they don't, I can still afford this place and will make a small profit of just the one unit.

I've talked to my three closest friends about my plans. All three want to invest. They all see the potential which gives me some reassurance that I am doing the right thing but I'm a small (like just me) business owner. I've never taken on a project where I would have investors. I don't even know how this works.

Who does this? Is it a business manager? Advisor? The last thing I want to do is give up most or all my profits.

tldr : I have a good idea and don't know how to take investments.

What to build a landing page around?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 07:00 AM PDT

    Hi,

I'm just getting into email marketing and I decided to use landing pages to market around a digital product. Is this the best idea? And also do I build the landing page around that specific product and then communicate with my subscribers about other related products or build the landing page around the niche as a whole to gather emails which I can then sell the product to them.

UK startup wants to hire - is it a scam?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 04:41 AM PDT

My friend has been offered a job through Facebook, through a family friend. It's working for a startup that doesn't have much going in the way of websites, and the social media/linkedin presence of the three 'founders' is pretty small too.

He was thinking of quitting his job anyway, and is living with parents so has no major fiscal responsibilities, so it'd only be his time lost, if he doesn't get paid in the end.

What can you suggest to him to make sure he has in place before he starts work (contracts etc), and what legal recourse he has if it goes south and he doesn't get paid or gets "fired" after a month (I've seen other posts here mention this scam)?

Another point which seems very fishy and unusual is the founders want their "employees" to create their own companies and they get paid that way. I guess it's like hiring freelancers and means the startup won't have to provide NI and sort out tax etc, but is this common or perhaps an indication of another scam?

    Thanks!

Virtual pitch events in our Covid-19 world?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 03:24 AM PDT

    First time poster here.

Back in March, we had a full summer calendar of pitch/networking events, and were looking forward towards Disrupt. All of them vanished with the virus. Since then it's been barren, and connections are key to our model.

Not sure how in person networking recovers. Our early investors we're not youthful.

Was truly hoping folks here could share some advice on virtual events that have taken their place -- geography is unimportant, really, but our company midwest (Chicago) based.

My gratitude for any assistance is given upfront.
