Learning a trade then having own business?

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 11:24 AM PDT

Hi guys, I'm currently 20 and have no clue what to do in my life one bit, I've always just hopped around different jobs and I'm currently doing warehousing... I've always liked the idea of working when I'd like to work and having the freedom to do what I enjoy, I'd love to be able to travel whenever I'd like or miss a day of work to do family stuff, however it isn't as easy as just that, I was thinking of doing a trade and trying to work up and have my own business but I have no clue what to do... Maybe a pressure washing company? Etc any help would be appreciated, just feel lost in life.. ( I'm from the UK if that helps) thank you.

Which one to use Flutter, React Native, or Swift& Kotlin for cross-platform GRUBHUB like app

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 02:39 PM PDT

Hi. Me and my 2 other college mates want to build a cross-platform GRUBHUB like app with digital payment and all but with some differences. We already have explored the pros& cons of the each technology from various sources, however, we haven't been able to come up with a conclusive answer to our question. We have around 8 months to complete the project and even if we go with Flutter or React Native we are planning to switch to native in the future if our project gains enough interest.

We have experience in Java but only in college level and not mobile app related if that helps anything.

Company asking me to buy my website offering ‘3 times the amount’ - what should I do?

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 06:44 PM PDT

I've been approached by the CEO of an educational company I work for part time that they want to buy a website I built on the side. They seem quite rushed about it due to current covid situation and said that the website I made would help them go more online. Its not that complex of a website, cant go more in detail.

Now the CEO said they would pay '3 times the original amount'. But I dont know whats the amount or price. How do I value my website? Should I persist on them saying a price first? I'm pretty sure I want to sell. They are meeting me tomorrow for a decision meeting, and Im not sure how to approach this. Thanks.

    How do you estimate revenue?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 02:07 AM PDT

I've established a hold & operating co for my startup.

There's a banker who needs an annual estimate for hold co. I've established estimates for my operating co which was simple to understand.

How do you estimate, in his words, "annual turn over for hold co" which doesn't make sense to me because it's just holding.

I assumed he meant how much I'll be adding to hold co? But his answer was unclear so I answered then that I'll be taking 20% of total revenue from hold co to invest for the coming year, he responded with "that's too much you need to give me realistic estimates for your hold co's turn over"

He's about to close the case on me, I'm launching soon, and my lawyer isn't finding time to answer this simple basic question for me.

If anyone can, what does annual revenue (turnover) for a hold co mean?

How do you estimate that and why was 20% to invest from it too much but then again what does that have to do with annual revenue?

Do I need to pay taxes for a US-incorporated company operating outside US?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 01:47 AM PDT

I'm going to be applying for Y-Combinator this September & one of their pre-requisites is to incorporate the company in the US. I'm okay with that, as my startup isn't incorporated yet.

But I am an Indian citizen & my company will also fully operate in India. So will I need to pay any taxes in US?

(only the company will be incorporated in US as per YC rules, there won't be any "employees" or work being done there or anything even being sold, in fact)

    Thank you :)

Which books would you recommend for market research?

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 09:13 PM PDT

I'm in the process of writing my business plan and a large part of it requires a fair amount of market research. I'm wondering if there are any books people here would recommend to get the job done is the best way possible. I need to ensure that my business plan is as good as I can make it.

Do you have a strategy how to return churn users? (SaaS)

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 12:28 AM PDT

Hi, I have SaaS service (1.5 years) for web designers, product managers and digital marketing specialists with 12% (last 6 months) churn rate. Maybe you know how to return churned users (emails, promo code, etc) or reduce this churn rate.

Thank you so much if you have any advice for this.

How do you measure effectiveness of an MVP?

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 10:46 AM PDT

I don't have enough coding experience to build an application as complex as I want it to be, but with no-code builders like Webflow and Bubble.io I could put together an MVP for a fraction of a fraction of the cost a traditional mobile application would cost (the MVP would be a web app).

The app is an on-demand app, so I would likely be the only person, except for maybe one or two friends, who work to provide the service. My question is how much does an MVP actually need to generate to show investors that the app and business model are viable, and how long should the MVP be tested?

How do I commit to an startup/idea?

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 04:26 PM PDT

I'm finding great difficulty in finding a purpose and committing to it.

In April 2019, I stopped working full time on my previous project which was a success and makes me decent money to this day.

Since then I have worked on more than 10 ideas, mostly in software but not always. For one project, I worked full time on it for 3 months, only to eventually get burnt out and abandon.

It's been 1.5 years since I have been in this phase. Life is becoming quite bad.

I'm tired of finding a new idea, getting super excited about it for a few weeks/months, only to see its flaws and give up on it.

I'm progressing into a deadly mindset where I feel like that even if I come across a great idea, I probably will prematurely give up on it.

Nowadays all I want to do is binge play video games to numb my bad feelings.

How do I commit to an idea? How do I stop abandoning the projects I start? I can't stop myself from seeing the flaws with an idea and giving up on it, wasting time and demotivating me even further.

How do customer returns impact (loss in revenue, impact on inventory, etc.) your business?

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 06:27 PM PDT

A few of my friends and I are interested in simplifying the return process for online stores that sell physical goods. What is your process for handling returned items? What is the impact that returned items have on your business (loss in revenue, impact on inventory, etc.)?

Developing an app - hire development firm or find technical cofounder?

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 07:15 PM PDT

I know this has been asked a ton already but I was hoping to get a more solid answer on where to go from here.

I have an idea for an app (I can feel everyone groaning already). I've had a ton of far fetched ideas before that haven't gotten anywhere, but with this idea I actually feel good about it and have gotten further than my previous ones.

The app is basically taking the subscription model of OnlyFans for a specific target audience. I've read previous threads here saying that an early step is testing your audience for interest. So I did reach out to a few targeted people, some were interested and some not. The good news is that the audience for this is very large so even a small amount of interest in this app can be profitable.

Now I'm in the process of wire framing the app and fleshing out how it's going to look and work. I scoured the app store, no other apps are doing this.

Where to go from here? I'll probably be done with the wireframes in a few weeks, I'm trying to make them as detailed as possible. I have some savings I'm willing to invest in this (10-20k). Do I hire a mobile development firm? If that's not enough money for a firm to produce the app, is it possible to raise money at this stage? Or do I go looking for a technical cofounder? And if it's better to get a cofounder, where would I look?

I have basically no technical skills. I'm in the medical field full time so I really can't spend the months-years it would to learn how to code (just being practical)

    University shuttle bus app

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 10:46 AM PDT

Hi guys, I'm currently a university student. My university is in a pretty rural part of the city and many students take 2 hours to travel from their home to school.

Hence, my friend and I chartered a shuttle bus every morning and evening to cater to these students and charged them accordingly. Our monthly revenue is around $3-5k, which is slightly past the break even point.

However, the admin side of things are really crazy, and it is impossible to scale without a software. I was wondering if any of you have a software to recommend for this? Basically, we want it to show real time seat availability and allow students to make payment to reserve their seat in advance.

    Thank you!

Is there software out there that allows me to track my customers I share with other companies?

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 02:27 PM PDT

So part of my business model is I connect local technicians with customers. The obvious advantage I have is that I have a recurring business model and customers can use my service over and over to connect to their favorite technicians or most trustworthy. Technicians love the service because all the backend paperwork is taken care of and they just need to show up the scheduled job, I take care of everything else.

The problem is I don't know how to ensure I can track this customer unless they contact me directly.

There's obvious things like setting expectations and promotions. But the real juice to the model is the fact I get a cut from all future transactions.

Is there anything out there like that? I'm not trying to go down a legal road with contracts or anything just yet.

Perfect and Late vs Good and On-Time

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 09:08 AM PDT

So, I built a service.I own 90% of the company, my partner owns 10%.

I own 90%, because I'm the tech-lead, operations lead, manage the rest of the team, I brought the initial capital, and although this wasn't what I envisioned upon - I am now also the sales guy. I'm one of those classic overachieving kids - although I did not expect to do as much sales as I have done.Thank goodness I knocked on thousands of doors as a teen canvassing for politicians. My partner has some connections within the local region of our starting-point, and is good at marketing/ui/ux. He was supposed to do sales, but I realized he has massive anxiety talking to random individuals - and can be greatly brought down with a single negative conversation. In short, even though he's a people's person - he can't handle random strangers disapproval - so now I have him as a follow-up man to anything I set up.

Anyway, so I built an app, a website, a server, and you know the whole 9 yards. And we partner with lots of local businesses to expand their reach and capacity while making money in certain services, but mostly in the hopes of accruing valuable data and going up the supply chain. I am a data-man by training, so I know how to shape/package this data into something that'll net me money. There is a particular type of partner within our various partners - that is very special. So we started with the focus of getting them digitized, and then to account for their weaknesses we started connecting to the more everyday type of businesses. Most of the orders we get now, are based on that special partner.

We haven't been promoting much, because the real benefit to our system comes when everyone is synced up. So I've been stressing the partner portal on the app for the past few days. We already have a large cohort of regular partners *signed up* to the system, but these guys have no knowledge on how to use what we have built - so I've been stressing making video's because I know that simple training won't work, and they will need to constantly brush up on how to use the system for the first few weeks.I tasked my partner with creating these tutorial videos. And he's been trying to do it, but he's been demanding lots of aesthetic changes to the app. He says that we need to be more explicity with everything, which I can understand - but the changes he wants are taking time to implement.

I believe we don't have the time. I figure it would be better to just shoot the video's in one day, and then work on the changes, and reshoot at a later date. In short - be short-termed. He would prefer, we make the changes and then shoot the videos. (It might be so he doesn't have to make two videos - which would be excusable if he hadn't made me rewrite the same code like 10 times). I've got two months of capital left . We need to get to 20 orders a day - we are at 2 rn (two weeks ago we were at 0 - all growth is organic). Before we can do our marketing push, we need the regular partners trained trained, before we can get the regular partners trained, we need reference videos, and to him - before we have reference videos, we need a final-product-looking platform for them.

I could probably get some money if I really needed it. The whole family thinks this thing will succeed, so I've had offers of money from everyone. So I could suck up my pride and accept it as like a short-term loan. We also have a few funding offers, but we aren't close to where we want to be - so we have rejected those. I really want to finish the milestones we have set for ourselves, and go get a term sheet by the end of October.

I'm sure some of ya'll have been in my shoes. The whole time vs perfection thing.

What did you do? I'm coding 8-12 hours daily, and I'm pretty sure my computer and eyes hate me for overworking them.

How do students doing startups in college avoid IP issues while in school?

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 05:49 PM PDT

So my question is as mentioned above. How do people avoid issues with IP while they're creating their startup in school for both undergrad and graduate school? I want to consider both scenarios where the startup isn't related at all to any research the student is doing and the case where it's pretty close to their research work.

I'm especially curious about how did Mark Zuckerberg get through this issue when he founded Facebook?

Sorry if the post is a bit broad and somewhat vague, not sure if this is the right place to ask this question.

React Native or Native (swift & kotlin)

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 03:40 AM PDT

    Hi guys,

My two friends and I are trying to build a startup. We have programming experience from college, but we don't have any industry experience. We are trying to build an app that will receive display live "content" (but not like social media stuff, think of it as a live announcement app) and accept payments. We have been learning swift and kotlin to build the app for each platform separately. But right now we have been considering going for cross-platform. We would appreciate your suggestions. What are the commons cons and pros for both native and cross platform development? Do big companies like Uber Lyft DoorDash use native or cross platform? Also keep in mind that we are planning to finish the project on both platforms in 7-8 months. We can totally spend more time than that but this is the goal.

Medical student looking for career advice

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 03:16 PM PDT

I'll cut to the chase - as a fourth year medical student, I'm quickly realizing clinical medicine isn't what I want to spend the rest of my life doing. I have a pretty extensive background in basic science research and data analysis/coding, and I've been considering using this skill set to leverage a job with a biotech startup after graduation, rather than pursuing a residency. I was hoping to receive insight from anybody that has gone this route - any and all thoughts are welcome.

    Thanks everybody.

Suggestions for getting vendors on board?

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 12:33 PM PDT

I'm launching a site that is similar to Just Eat and have made an MVP (starting small, just focussing on pizza in my local area right now). It needs takeaways to be on board before it has value, so my main priority is just getting them to join. I've tried calling but owners are never in-store (also calling feels a bit impersonal and because I'm focussed on my local area I need a high conversion rate). I know they're likely to give us a try if we can get in front of them, I'm just wondering how you guys would do that if you were in my shoes.

Currently, I'm thinking of just going around one day this week and asking to talk to owners, but if there's a more efficient way I'd love to hear, thanks in advance

Any recommendations for product launch waitlisting software?

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 10:42 AM PDT

I'm creating a pre-launch waitlist for a new product we're about to roll out, where interested users can sign up, and refer other users to move up on the waitlist. For reference, Robinhood has done this for almost every product launch.

Are there any good existing tools that allow you to do this? If possible, I'm looking for one where I can embed within my existing website.

I've narrowed it down to prefinery and upviral, but wondering if there are any better (and more affordable) options out there.

Thinking about Starting an online Coaching Business

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 09:58 AM PDT

So I have been a lurker on several different subreddits related to start ups/entrepreneur and have done a lot of my own research online about stating a business. My wife and I are ready to start putting things in motion to start our own side business related to online coaching but I was hoping for some advice to make sure I wasn't missing any big steps or over look anything. 1. Create an LLC to form the business and minimize liability. 2. Meet with a lawyer about drawing up documents (for a disclaimer and stuff for clients) 3. Create the social media presence (not a website at this time) 4. Create a separate bank account to ensure proper tax prep and further protect liability. 5. Get general liability insurance. 6. Get clients That's all I have right now. Looking for any further resources related to this would also be super helpful. Also we are in Massachusetts if that matters. Thank you!
